The Senate Budget Committee Republican staff under Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on Thursday released a chart that should have you worried:
“The numbers reflect the change in the total number of people employed and the total number of people on the two largest federal welfare programs, as well as Social Security Disability Insurance, between 2008 and 2012,” the senator’s report explains.
“The employment figure was derived using the total nonfarm and seasonally adjusted number of people employed in December of 2008 (134.4 million) and the number of people employed in September 2012 (133.5 million) as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics,” the report adds.
The senator’s office also explains that the number of people on food stamps and Medicaid was derived by comparing the number of people on both programs in 2008 (as reported by each agency) and the number the CBO expects to be on each program by 2012.
“Overall, there are nearly 80 means-tested federal welfare programs and, according to the Census Bureau, nearly 110 million people in the United States receive benefits from at least one of them,” the report adds.*
But instead of trying to limit or control the size of these unwieldy and expensive state run programs, it seems like there are people in the federal government who want more people on these programs.
Indeed, as Sen. Sessions notes and as TheBlaze has mentioned before, certain government agencies advertise and encourage participation in their programs.
Heck, the USDA even praises the economic benefits of food stamp participation: “Each $5 dollars in new SNAP benefits generates almost twice that amount in economic activity for the community… Everyone wins when eligible people take advantage of benefits to which they are entitled.”
“Total spending on food stamps is projected to reach nearly $800 billion over the next 10 years, with no fewer than 1 in 9 people on the program at any given time,” Sen. Sessions’ office reminds us.
So, yes, as stated in the headline and the opening paragraph, the difference between job growth and welfare participation in this country is terrible and you should be worried.
Follow Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) on Twitter
*”This figure includes exclusively means-tested welfare programs, not entitlements like Medicare or Social Security. It also excludes some means-tested benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or the health insurance premium subsidies included in the President’s health law. CBO estimates that the premium subsidies, scheduled to begin in 2014, will result in at least 25 million individuals receiving means-tested federal assistance by the end of the decade.”

Oct. 11, 2012 at 12:29pmPeople that have been living off the Cylce of Welfare will continuw to do so unless the government proves that they are unable to hold down any type of job. Government social workers suggest to young black women to keep having babies so they will receive more free entitlements. The government is responsible for the Welfare State we live in and I hope when Romney gets elected, he actually gets rid of many entitlement benefits for those who don’t deserve them.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 1:05pmFirstly, we need to slug this debate out in the trenches first,
using the tools of democracy given to us by our forebearers.
Entitlements are not new to this Earth
Government welfare programs which took from the “haves” and gave to the “have nots” were alive and well in England in the 1750s.*
We must convince our neighbors that, compassion to give somebody something for nothing is not compassion at all, but is dooming them to dependency (which will become a four-letter word in the years to come)
We must convince our friends that reliance on anybody or anything, be it neighbor or bureaucrat, is counter productive.
That reliance, or dependency, blunts the desire to work, or stand up on your own two foot and be a man, be independent and take charge of the course of your life.
We must lastly convince our neighbors that striving to excel, pursuing happiness, trying to have your conditions in life be better than they were yesterday, is INSTINCT. It is HUMAN NATURE to desire to achieve, to better yourself and your standing in society.
THESE IDEAS ARE NOT MY OWN. They belong to none other than BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. And you may read more about them in Smyth’s biography, Writings of Benjamin Franklin.
*Ben Franklin spent a few years in England and left knowing that government programs masked as ‘compassion’ are anything but, and lead to everything except prosperity.

How and why did it starting making a difference on who is President when it comes to Business Creation and Job Growth ?
It seems to me that all of our Freedoms are being based on who our elected officials are, and not on our Constitution.
And it’s not just the Federal Government, but Local and State Governments as well.
It should make no difference who the President, Congressman, Senator, State Governor or Local Elected Commissioner is when it comes to Business Creation and Job Growth ?

Unemployed fathers and mothers are seeking food stamps for a final effort to feed their families. This has nothing to do with race or population. it is an unemployment issue.

Oct. 12, 2012 at 11:51amThere are only 3 methods of obtaining anything: (1) STEAL – the taking by force, threat, coercion, deceit or fraud (2) BEG – depend on the compassion or sense of obligation of others to provide for those not able to provide for themselves. (3) BARTER – trade something of value for something else of value..ie. my time and efforts to an employer for a salary, or a product I have produced for a mutually-agreed price. There are no other ways, and everything you have has been obtained by one of these three methods.

I’m not surprised if it is. I live in Maine which gives some of the most welfare benefits. Hoping LePage changes it. With all of the federal regulations being put in place, it’s gonna get even harder for him to make a difference. If Barry O. gets back in there will likely be no more regulation belonging to the state at all.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 1:10pmWhat they FAIL to mention is that for every dollar in food stamps given out probably ANOTHER dollar (at least!) is spent in administering the program (including unnecessary advertising)! And, as was hinted at by others, for every dollar in food stamps given out that’s a dollar that COULD have been used to create a job or somehow otherwise generate REAL economic growth!
I have absolutely NO objections to giving out welfare to those who truly CAN’T fend for themselves, although I DO feel non-government entities (i.e. religious and charitable organizations) can do a FAR better job of it at a lower cost. However, the principle is the same… we, as a society, have a responsibility to assist those who can’t fend for themselves.
HOWEVER, I have STRONG objections to assisting those who CAN fend for themselves if they’d just get their faces out of the government trough, get off their lazy butts, and get a job! If there aren’t wage-earning jobs available for these people, then at LEAST they could do community work of some sort in exchange for government assistance! There should be NO “free” handouts to ANYONE who’s capable of some sort of work… PERIOD!

Personally, I would be much tougher. Before I would give food to those in need, I would want them to set some priorities. I would NOT give food stamps if they have more than basic cable or satellite TV, or if they have more than a minimum phone service, or if they have over some set $$ assets available to them (many “wealthy” people qualify because their “income” is low – even though they have mansions and cars and savings). I would limit what they can buy to be healthy foods – no twinkies or HO-HO’s. No cash back – must be spent on food (no cigarette, alcohol, etc.) Anyone found selling other itmes should be fined – both the store and the individual selling it.
Sorry – I also feel there should be “shame” tied to taking the hard earned dollars from others and using them as your own.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 11:50amIt would seem the new unempoyment numbers and means tested entitlements would give a clearer picture than what we were fed last week by the Dems about the real state of affairs. This would also give us a better picture of why BO issued his executive order taking the work clause out of the welfare law. People may have jobs, but they are so low paying they can’t afford to buy food, pay for shelter and clothing, so go on public assistance and hope to weather things out until BO is out of office. I’m 55 and haven’t been able to even get an interview, even though I have very good qualifications. I have been forced to find ways to bring money in, but would not use the government for assistance as long as I can find other ways to support myself. I’ve also have a couple of younger friends who are in their early 30′s who have been having about the same results I’ve had. They have also come to the conclusion they will need to be self-employed as few are hiring and we live in an area that has lower unempoyment than most in the US.
I get by and I’m surviving, just waiting for Gov. Romney to be elected with the hope he will do a better job than the current administration in staying out of my way. If it stays the same, I’m not sure what I’ll do but more of the same. I guess I’m expendable….

But it has to ALWAYS pay better to work than to not work. Even after you factor in gas and childcare. AND what about these daddies spreadin their sperm everywhere but not being the least bit responsible for the offspring? Yes she should keep her legs closed too! The problem is big and our Gubment is NOT helping,
When you need:
credit check
background check
fingerprints
physical exam
3 references
resume
computer
Internet
2 interviews, blah blah blah to get a job.
In other words we need to change the path of least resistence which is welfare.
Now college graduates can’t find decent jobs. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/19/business/economy/19grads.html?_r=0
The gubment gets involved and wants EVERYONE to have a degree and it cheapens the degree. Not everyone is meant to get a college degree. We need to bring back GOOD trade schools. The problem is soooo complicated. But the main point is the Gubment ALWAYS makes it worse!

That’s all you need to know to understand everthing Obama has done, most of it by fiat, not legislation. Obama has used executive orders to do almost all of his damage to America and the economy to drive demand for welfare. Ask yourself, “Self, why would Obama want an economic recovery when he needs poverty to drive demand for government, the economy sucks, he gets no criticism and half the country will still vote for him? ” Obama should just come out and say, “Hey you won’t make as much as you were before, but the new mega-huge government will give you lots of stuff. The rich will still get richer and support me, but you can sign up for new programs all the time and we’ll legalize drugs to go along with the welfare and free video games.”

Oct. 11, 2012 at 11:41am“Each $5 dollars in new SNAP benefits generates almost twice that amount in economic activity for the community…”
I call BS on this.
That $5 comes from somewhere, wouldn’t that reduce the amount of economic activity elsewhere in the economy, making this wealth transfer a wash?
And then again, there is an administrative overhead in taking the $5 from elsewhere in the economy, as well as another administrative overhead in disbursing the $5 to the SNAP recipient? If we assume a 10% collection “overhead” and a 10% disbursement “overhead” what we are really doing is taing $6 out of one part of the economy to put $5 somewhere else – with $1 heading off to a third part of the economy (the cost of government)…
Assuming the $6 that was taken from one part of the economy was going to be spent on food, and it is taken away and given to another person as $5 with which to buy food how does that $5 create more economic activity than the $6?

problem is beyond cloward & pivens.
it began in the 60′s – not with the civil rights efforts & legislation, but rather with the watts, MLK & rodney king riots.
the black underclass proved themselves capable of violence, the liberals in congress were quick to placate “the masses” with free stuff just to keep a lid on violent outbursts. but – like any other protection money – the recipients want more & use thinly veiled threats of violence to get more.
and the congress caves. we can’t afford to continue to buy off the takers.
the biggest terrorist threat to this country is the terrorists who inhabit our cities and threaten violence to bribe us for their subsistence.
problem is when you start to take food from the mouths of one family to feed the children of another family, the first family is going to object.
we are fast approaching that point. the only way to counter the threat of violence is with a more violent posture – kinda like the middle east/north africa.
no matter how you cut it, we have tough times ahead.
