The Democratic National Committee has fired the Obama re-election staffer caught on video appearing to help facilitate voter fraud.
Undercover footage from conservative activist James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas showed Stephanie Caballero, regional field director of Organizing for America in Houston, assisting someone who said she intended to vote in both Florida and Texas. In the video, Caballero laughed at the idea and called it “funny” and “cool.”
DNC spokeswoman Melanie Roussell told Talking Points Memo the video was enough to fire Caballero on Wednesday.
“There is obviously a history here of making selective use of taped material, and we will certainly not vouch for the completeness of what was released,” Roussell told the site. “However, what we saw was enough for us to take the action that we did.”
In an interview with TheBlaze, O’Keefe called Caballero’s actions “deplorable” but said firing one staffer isn’t enough.
“They can try to say it’s an isolated incident and that it’s, you know, try to scapegoat the individual but I think it’s the culture and the policies at fault,” O’Keefe said. “This is not just an individual, this is an organization with a culture that fosters this kind of behavior.”
O’Keefe said he stands by the video regardless of Rousell’s comment about “selective use” and tape “completeness.” There appeared to be seven video cuts in the approximately three minutes of footage where Caballero was featured.
“I defend my editorial decisions,” O’Keefe said. “We were very careful to include everything in context and thus damning statements were not contradicted or mitigated by other statements. We’re very, very careful at this point because we have to be and we hold ourselves to a higher standard.”
O’Keefe promised there was much more incriminating material set to be released, though declined to provide any details of what he said was a nationwide investigation about voter fraud.
“This is part of a larger investigation and we’re going to be releasing more damning material up ahead,” O’Keefe said. “Frankly part of holding the campaign accountable also means holding the media accountable, because throughout Project Veritas’ history reporters have tried to cover up what we’ve exposed. So we’re releasing one of these tapes at a time to challenge journalists to treat each, you know, each event as its own and not to lie and say [voter fraud is] isolated.”
Caballero did not respond to a request for comment from TheBlaze.
