A live bird is probably the last thing researchers in a submarine expected to see as they ascended from a depth of 300 feet in California’s Monterey Bay. But see one they did, and, as you might expect, their reaction was one of amazement.
The “Aqua Geeks,” as they’re called in the YouTube video’s description, passed the deep diving bird at 150-feet under water after they had been conducting tests on equipment built by California State University-Monterey Bay students and professors in Marine Robotics class.

The fainter gray object at the top of the screen is a bird. (Image: YouTube screenshot)
The video taken by professor Steve Moore shows the submarine rising the water and the bird is but a flash, but the reaction of Moore (a.k.a. the “ecstatic diving bird spotter”) and his colleagues is entertaining.
As the YouTube video states, watch as “giddiness ensues”:
“Wow, very cool. We just saw a bird that dove down to 150 feet,” one of the researchers says in the video. “We actually passed it on the way up.”
As the video continues, the researchers start identifying more regular marine life they’re passing.
The research being conducted was part of the OceanGate Foundation. According to the foundation’s website, this was part of a series of dives on the submarine “Antipodes” to the Art Riedel, Sr. shipwreck studying marine life.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 1:57pmHow does CSU Monterey Bay afford a submarine, along with the cost of using/maintaining it, if the state is 335 BILLION dollars in the hole, and DOO DOO BROWN is attempting to monetarily RAPE his constituents?
just sayin?

Oct. 11, 2012 at 1:15pmWas it the movie titled “The Deep” or was it “Leviathon” where the underwater aliens looked like big birds?
I saw shrimp alive at the mouth of a volcano vent in ultra deep water that was metered at 300 degrees, on the Decovery Channel, I assume that is true. If it is then I would venture to say that we have so much more to learn than we have yet learned.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 1:12pmThat wasn’t a bird. Whatever it was was clearly swimming around and maneuvering very nimbly. Diving birds aren’t capable of that. They dive straight down grab anything that’s within reach and float back to the surface.

That’s what I thought too.
If they were shocked to see a bird at 150′, why didn’t the camera make any effort to shoot it?
Instead, we get to see 4 minutes of bubbles, and 1 sec of an alleged bird.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 8:08amLoved seeing this article, felt good reading it and watching the video. Incredible to see a bird flying through water at 50M. The only bird I know of diving that deep is a Penguin, but then again why shouldn’t other birds be able to do that too?
Maybe it was Jonathan Livingston Seagull, now exploring a denser fluid to fly through of water. In any respect, God’s creatures never fail to amaze and delight all who choose to see.

BTW – How would it equalize pressure, especially in its craniam? . . and one would think that pressure would be harmful to the light-duty bones of a bird.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 10:52am@ Dave Darwin was a simple observer taking notes mainly on a Island. God made those animals that he was taking notes on. Yes they have learned different adaptations to their environment to survive. Just like most creatures everywhere due to God letting us change to certain situations to adapt. Hope you now see the difference if not you will one day and it wont be Darwin looking upon you.

Oct. 11, 2012 at 3:42amLeeward Ho! The gannet, a pelagic bird, dives at 120 mph. Do the math. Yes, the extremely hard skulled avian does, (with video footage) defy the boundaries! Nature is Amazing!! Actually have seen this from Mexican coast. Major surge of “bait fish” & flock of high flying gannets. Attain altitude, spin, pull the wings in… 120 mph dive!! Can believe the depth. Again, do the math.
