Christian College Denies Conservative Club, Citing ‘Divisive Language’ & Controversial ‘Political Activism’
Young America’s Foundation (YAF) is no stranger to controversy. The conservative organization that aims to educate young people about American values, has, of late, been banned from having a presence in a high school and now — on a college campus.
In 2011, we told you about La Reina High School, an all-girls Catholic educational facility located in Thousand Oaks, California, and its refusal to allow a YAF chapter on campus. Now, a conservative Christian college in the same state has denied a student’s request to launch a chapter.
Azusa Pacific University administrators reportedly refused sophomore Ashley Blackwell’s request to start the group on campus. While this is the case, the university is arguing that the issue surrounded the school’s opposition to rebranding, as a YAF affiliate, a conservative group that was already in existence.
Either way, YAF was apparently rejected because it was found to not fit in well with the school’s stated mission. According to an official statement on its web site, the university’s mission statement reads, “we work together as a team of difference makers to advance the work of God in the world through scholarship, teaching, and building disciples across all levels and delivery systems of collegiate education.”

Ashley Blackwell (Photo Credit: YAF)
Naturally, it would seem that YAF, in some way, runs contrary to these values. WORLD on Campus has more about the debate and how the situation unfolded:
In an open letter to Fox News, Blackwell, chair of her school’s Conservative Club, detailed her attempt to start the chapter and the opposition she met from APU administrators. After Blackwell submitted her application, Chuck Strawn, executive director of communiversity, told her that other administrators had problems with some language on YAF’s national website. He went on to tell her he could not approve her request.
In response to questions about their decision, APU administrators released a statement explaining their opposition to the “divisive” language YAF uses on its site as well as its emphasis on campus activism.
APU administrators told YAF Vice President Todd Coyle that they specifically objected to the text on YAF’s website under the “Start a Chapter” tab: “Are you tired of liberal ideas dominating your campus? Are you tired of liberal and Marxist professors indoctrinating your classmates? Do you want to advance conservatism?”
It didn’t end there. The school also took issue with other words including: “radical feminists,” fringe environmentalists, “Islamo-fascists” and “race-baiters,” among other semantics. Naturally, Blackwell noted how disappointed she was by the school’s decision, as the student said that she didn’t plan for the club to engage in activism and political activities.
The school, though, affirmed its Christian values and said that it seeks to avoid polarizing language that discourages unity.
“We strive to avoid those polarizing discussions commonly found in secular society, and instead encourage our community to…model civic virtue for our campus community, and…encourage spiritual unity in Christ,” the Azusa Pacific University statement read.
However, the college also claimed that the debate has been inaccurately represented in media and wrote the following in an attempt to defend itself:
Late last week, an online article inaccurately reported that the university banned a conservative club on campus. We would like to provide some clarification on that issue. The university’s Young Conservative club has been in existence for a number of years. Recently, the club requested to change their name and be formally associated with the Young America’s Foundation (YAF) group. The university instead encouraged the group to keep its membership open to all conservative students.
As an academic institution placing God First in all that we do, we not only welcome open dialogue with political student clubs on our campus, we encourage it as part of the total growth experience of our students. Azusa Pacific supports much of what YAF stands for, including its goal of preserving the U.S. Constitution, its values, and the God-given rights that we are guaranteed in that precious document. However, YAF uses divisive language and embraces some forms of political activism that do not align with who we are as a university.
WORLD also noted that Jennifer Walsh, associate dean for the school’s college of liberal arts, said that the issue with YAF being on campus has more to do with the fact that the organization seems to assist young people who face “a hostile learning environment.” This isn’t something that Walsh said is pertinent at Azusa Pacific.
Despite the school’s rejection of the club, Blackwell pledges to continue fighting for the club. Because the college is private, there is no compulsion, at least legally, for officials to accept YAF.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 1:35amThere is a Young Conservatives club and a Young Progressives club already in existence at APU. The accusation that the Young Conservatives free speech was denied is ridiculous. Blackwell herself said that she has been allowed to distribute YAF materials on campus. She goes to YAF events. She can do and say whatever she wants, but she can’t force a private religious institution to formally affiliate with an outside secular organization. The institution has first amendment rights as well. And to those who think APU is less Christian for not affiliating with YAF — what makes YAF the definition of Christian? It’s a secular organization. And those who think APU was being weak — they stood up for their values and said no based on very deeply held beliefs, despite the fact that they are coming under attack for it. I’d love to see an argument based in the facts rather than some knee-jerk reactions. Why should a private religious institution formally affiliate with a secular organization that operates in ways that don’t align with its mission or values? The Constitution protects APU’s decision.

As to your shallow point about religion and politics in a university. Many people are starting to realize that your ideology of secular leftism, has every bit much dogma, faiths and beliefs as any religion. Part of it’s MO is to deny this, I understand. But Leftism is the most dynamic religion on earth; and that is why she was denied.
Leftism and Christianity’s values are mostly mutually exclusive, so those decision makers in power at that Christian University have chosen their Leftism over their Christianity. (It’s the same with Jews, and why it almost always the believing, practising Jews who are more likely to be Conservative.

When Christ, his truth, and his servants are assaulted, he who does not espouse their cause is not on Christ’s side, but incurs the guilt of deserting and betraying him. Posted on October 12, 2012 at 4:38pmHow hard was that search you ask? Put it in Google and give you the definition. Watched your video, nice propaganda. I think what gets most people confused is they relate Fascism to known distators like Mussolini or Marx and assume that dictator becomes fascist becomes leftist, marxist, et al.
Noriega is a great example, supported by the right in the 70s and 80s. When he had lost his usefullness, he was arrested and put away. This country has supported many fascists in the past and usually for what reason? We were always told To stem the rise of communism, the opposite ideology.
You realize there can never be “no government” and trying to use this crazy video to make it look like the right is always on the moderate and the left always on the radical is purely ludicrous. Less government on the right has always meant what we want to govern, not less, just our specific rules.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 5:16pmCAUSE_GLEN_SAID_SO, Glad that I finally took a look up here. I expected your response regarding the video to show up at the bottom.
Propaganda, now that is funny. I would venture to say that I am considerably older than you, and that is what we were taught in school. I came into the first of my political awareness some time in 1964. Election year, and the push in school was to pay attention to all sides. At least where I attended school, there was no indoctrination or push to one side or the other. I could easily figure out that Goldwater made more sense than LBJ. You do recall LBJ right? The then senator from Texas who kept the Eisenhower inspired civil rights bill from going to the floor of the senate for a vote. He finally signed it into law himself in ’64, but with an ulterior motive, and he openly expressed that motive as well. Well, back to that propaganda accusation. It was in the late ’60s that I recall that the left crowd started calling the government Fascist, and Nazis. Yeah, it even occurred when a Democrat, LBJ was in office. But, those terms were really tossed about as Nixon took office. We’ve had fighting troops in Vietnam since 1953 and one would have thought that Nixon invented the Vietnam War starting in 1969. The more liberals who filtered into politics, academia, and even business really started to distort so much. Especially politics and academia.
Continued.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 5:27pmCAUSE_GLEN_SAID_SO, You’ve certainly oversimplified the instance with Noriega. He had previously worked with the U.S. CIA, DEA, and the military and was at the time a very useful resource. As the date of the treaty Carter signed surrendering the Panama Canal and the U.S. military installations in the area, Noriega saw his world influence sphere drawing down, and felt that he would loose personal income as the U.S. pulled out. Thank you Jimmy Carter. To cover his soon to come to fruition loses he went into the drug business with the Colombian cartels and dabbled in a bit of narco-terrorism himself. While we still had an operational military treaty and SOFA with Panama we suddenly experienced a number of murders of our troops, and our CIA and DEA learned that large, and I mean very large shipments of drugs were coming through Panama. We didn’t just suddenly say that he was no longer useful and arrest him as you say. I was elsewhere and not in a unit sent to Panama for Just Cause, but I later worked with a Colonel who while then a Major put the hand irons on Noriega.
Okay, back to the video. Did you notice that it pointed out how our government was established in this spectrum as just right of center? No, we don’t want to be at the far right. Except for a certain faction of Libertarians, and no that is not a slap at our Libertarians here. But, there is a faction who does want total anarchy and free of any laws.

CAUSE_GLEN_SAID_SO, As was illustrated in the video the spectrum goes from the far left which is total government control, to the far right which is no government or total anarchy. We truly do not want to be at one end or the other of such a spectrum.
” Less government on the right has always meant what we want to govern, not less, just our specific rules.”
Total lie, or part of your indoctrination in your youth. While there is not perfect form of government, and there will be those who find ways around rules and laws, and find loopholes where none were earlier believed to exist. But, rules such as those from our three letter alphabet soup agencies and laws that step on our rights guaranteed by the Constitution where any single one of us likes it or not is still wrong. You really should open your eyes and look around you to see what a growing government is doing to us. Where is it in the Constitution that businesses like GM can be federalized? You won’t find it. I have a copy of the Constitution and all amendments in a book right here on my desk, and read it often. Maybe you should read it sometime, and read the words are they are literally written. Do this a few times as you can.
As for that particular video, I have seen others in the past online. I found this one as I was looking for a longer better exploitation that I know off. Wish that I had saved it now.

Well, the “about” page on the website states, “The staff of World English is made up of specialist translators, teachers, writers and academics working with English language and linguistics. They are based in several countries around the world.” Hmm, not one single name given. Why is that? Don’t they want any recognition for their time and effort? Seems a little suspect to me. One thing that I have learned is that progressives are the masters of twisting language and history to fit their agenda and world view. Here is the definition of fascism from Merriam-Webster:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fascism
Not one single mention of fascism being a right-wing ideology. So lets look at another definition from a well established source. How about the Cambridge dictionary:
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/fascism?q=fascism
Again, not one single mention of fascism being assocaited with right-wing (or left-wing for that matter) ideology. Fascism isn’t about a right-wing or left-wing ideology. Fascism is about power and control and ironlically it is used today by those who want to silence their opposition by accusing them of doing the exact same thing that they themselves are doing. 1. Fascism-

And this is from Merriam-Webster: often capitalized : Fascism- a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
Then there’s this definition for you from Merriam-Webster:

1

2
capitalized : a member of a party or political group advocating socialism
— socialist adjective often capitalized
— so·cial·is·tic adjective

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 8:21pm@VERCEOFREASON,
I cannot speak for others, but the concept that one can be a liberal Christian is becoming harder and harder to accept.
Liberal causes, such as abortion and gay marriage, are completely against Biblical teaching. Much of the modern ‘environmental groups’ are also non-Christian, since this group places the Earth as its god, and not Yahweh.
Modern day feminism ALSO tends to be anti-Christian since it staunchly opposes any form of traditional family marriage, as stated in the New Testament.
Numerous social ‘safety net’ programs that the liberals endorse also go against Biblical teachings, since they replace the Christian as the primary caregiver of the community, and instead replaces it with a godless, cold, and uncaring government system that seeks only to enslave the masses.
Should I go on, or do you get the point?

Posted on October 13, 2012 at 10:20amNo Christians are Christians. People need to start reading Titus and know when to just bury the Constitution. It was our blessing and our curse. For the past two hundred years we were blessed with the freedom of religion because it was accepted as such. Now it isn’t and we are faced with complacent Christians who would rather base their faith in government rather than in God and we’re paying for it now. I don’t think it’s anyone’s place to dictate to a private school what clubs they should and should not host and reading the comments I see those that would favor such a mandate as being part of the problem with this nation in suppressing the freedoms they claim to uphold. Freedom of speech is equal to freedom of religion and it’s my understanding that no freedom is greater than the other. As for me I know that the Bible Old and New Testaments never ONCE promised FREEDOM of anything. So just know when to bury the Constitution and prepare for when it dies and don’t let your faith die with it. God first. Always. The rest of it is going to be what it is but Christians know we follow the laws of the land but God is our sovereign.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 3:16pmI saw nothing wrong with the words that the school took issue with. These words identify people that Christians face every day and they describe people that do not have the best interest of Christianity at heart.
This is the same thing that has happened in too many churches today. The ministers preach tolerance instead of the word of God and the parishioners lap it up.
In the PC world the mantra is….Don’t rock the boat. Let’s all get along…….. Well I think Jesus would want us to rock a few boats.

Posted on October 13, 2012 at 10:32amIf there’s one thing I’ve learned with my relationship with Christ is that this world does not matter and you have two sides to pick. One is Jesus and His side to forgive and the other is Satan with his side to condemn. Pick your battlefields and pray you know what side you’re on. I stand up against abortion because that’s against God’s law, I stand up against condemnation to anyone for anything because that’s Satan’s job to do those things. Know what’s out of condemnation and what is out of love. It’s hard sometimes but in this case it’s apparent.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 2:43pmOk lets take a closer look. The school claims to be christian….does not want to be divisive….wants to be tolerant…..
Well then, the school should remove the word ‘christian’ from every trace of the acreage.
The word ‘christian’ by definition IS divisive.
‘I came to put a man against his father…’
‘All your righteousnesses are as filty rags.’ (not your bad deeds, mind u, but the very best)
‘Christ died for your sins…’
‘Love not the world.’
‘Sell what ye have….follow me….’
‘He washed us from our sins…in his own blood…’
appears a tad divisive
This luke warm, candy coated gospel is disgusting and degrading: disgusting to any thoughtful soul who claims the scriptures as fact, and degrading to God’s word. This is common however and is a mere sign of the times.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 2:43pmIt is very interesting that a “Christian College” does not remember that Jesus was highly controversial in his time, He challenged the “status-quo” and he told those who followed Him that they were “not of this world” and would be hated. They must not know that Christ “loved” the people and showed them how they were to live their lives – including not following the hypocrites.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 4:33pmCAUSE_GLEN_SAID_SO, The very first U.S. president who would be considered a progressive was a Republican. Teddy Roosevelt. He did believe in a stronger centralized federal government (if you saw the video, that would be left of center) and did a number of things to grow government thus violating the Constitution. Starting the Federal Parks system was one of them.
