CNN Anchor Tells Conservative Guest: ‘You’ve Lost Your Mind’ for Thinking Debate Moderator Did Bad Job

Unhappy with the performance of moderator Martha Raddatz during last night’s debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Rep Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Conservative blogger Erick Erickson tweeted the following:

I’m sorry, but I think Martha Raddatz did an atrocious job as a moderator.She lost control of both sides repeatedly.

Later, during a CNN interview, anchor Soledad O’Brien challenged Erickson for his characterization of Raddatz’s performance.

“I think you have lost your mind,” O’Brien said after Erickson reaffirmed his “atrocious” comment. “I actually thought the — ”

“I think you’re a journalist and journalists are going to give her cover. I thought she was horrible,” Erickson interjected.

“I don’t think it’s cover. I’ve never met her before today. She walked by, I said, ‘Hi.’ But I actually thought, in terms of information,” she continued, “for me, a moderator who stays out of it but let’s them go at each other a little bit so you can get some of the argument, but then jumps in and moves it to the right — to another direction. I think that was very helpful as someone just, you know, watching it. I got to watch it in the hall. Why do you disagree?”

“Well, because I think she only interrupted and ‘moved the debate forward’ when Paul Ryan was speaking,” Erickson argued, “she rarely did it with Joe Biden. She let Joe Biden do the interruption.”

For the record, and for what it’s worth, Raddatz did interrupt Rep. Ryan 31 times while only cutting off the vice president 19 times.

“Her wheelhouse is foreign policy. She devoted probably two-thirds of the debate to foreign policy. And, you know, when you’re debating in foreign policy in a vice presidential debate, I guess that’s all well and good, but we have this unemployment number, we’ve got the jobs decline, and I just think moderators shouldn’t make the focus their wheelhouse,” Erickson said.

“Yeah, I’m going to disagree with you on that,” said the perpetually concerned-looking O’Brien. “I really think she did a terrific job. I thought she was super strong.”

So she says she got to watch it (the debate) in the hall. It seems to me O’Brien has a strange interpretation of “Encouraging the Conversation” when the moderator fails to stop the deliberate tactic of interrupting the other person. Interrupting encroached on Ryan’s time given him, to succinctly verbalize his thoughts. I might remind O’Brien that one of the jobs of Moderator is to enforce the rules of debate. Perhaps what O’Brien would have preferred is a MMA Match with baseball bats.

  I have thought about it much and I must conclude that Biden was on something. Alcohol drugs of some kind I suspect. He was acting quite childish and motor mouthed like he was in fairy land. Someone had mentioned shrumes and I suppose that is possible as well. Bottom line, didn’t act like a vice president to me.

  I get this treatment from my boss. If I disagree with him, it’s not because we see things differently, it’s because I’m ignorant of the facts or stupid. In this case, it’s “crazy”.

  Here’s how it went: Almost always, Raddatz directed her questions to Ryan first. Biden would then interrupt Ryan and spin some more, or interject insults or laugh like a pothead. Then Biden has his say, almost always without interruptions. Usually Ryan was not allowed to respond, because Raddatz decided to move on to the next question.
  
  One instance of moderator bias that stood out for me was when the Drunken Clown emphatically stated:
  
  ” We are working hand in glove… with all the people in the region…so that when Assad goes, AND HE WILL GO, there will be a legitimate government that follows on…”
  
  Raddatz, lets that one slide. Ryan gets to respond. Then Biden cuts him off and talks some more. When Biden is done spinning, to my utter surprise, Raddatz turns to Ryan and PASSIONATELY challenges him with regard to Biden’s comment:
  
  “What happens if Assad does not fall? Congressman Ryan, what happens to the region? What happens if he hangs on? What happens if he does?”
  
  WTH? It was Biden who based his entire response on the premise that Assad would go. So why didn’t she take it up with him? What a state media puke.

  My 16 year old daughter participated in a high school debate last week… During last nights debate, she was amazed at how Biden was behaving and told us that his constant interuptions and crass behavior would NEVER be permitted in a high school debate. I would think that the VP debate should at least be held to High School debate standards!

  Martha’s favoritism towards Biden was so BLATANT that if they had pulled back and shown a long shot, I would not have been surprised to see her on her KNEES under Biden’s desk! Aside from making NO ATTEMPT to curtail Laughing Boy’s antics and interruptions, she repeatedly interrupted Ryan herself, even changing the subject in mid-sentence several times to keep him off balance.
  
  I am really SICK TO DEATH of these media WHORES blatantly shilling for the left-wingers, while pretending to be “objective” journalists. Her performance last night was a DISGRACE, and the RNC is a bunch of FOOLS for not demanding some Conservative representation among the moderators. We can expect more of the same kind of crap during the next two Presidential debates, I’m sure–now that ODUMBER turned in such a sorry performance, the damned media will be working OVERTIME to prop the evil little puppet up and try to make him look good, or at least COMPETENT. Not because Biden is a winner…but rather because being near him requires an immediate follow up shower just to wash the “knuckleheadedness” off. Joe Biden is a plagiarizing perennial buffoon….and the fact that the lunatics in this country who voted him into this office exist in such an amount and number is actually unsettling. After 40 years in public office….Biden is among the bottom 2 politicians in terms of net worth. He has been paid handsomely for these elected offices over the past 40 years….and yet he languishes at the bottom of his class…once again. This has nothing to do with politicians and their typical graft and payola proclivities….but rather the fact that Biden cant even manage his own actual earnings in a 40 year period and grow his own personal estate to anything substantial…but yet when it comes to him railing about the rich and wealthy he is always the first turnip on the truck to preach how others should be subjected to handling or managing their own personal financial affairs and matters. Why we (conservatives) continue to allow these self confessed liberals to “moderate” presidential debates is beyond me. I want REAL journalists to ask questions. How about Jake Tapper, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck….. how about getting the journalists out of the equation and letting taxpaying citizens ask the questions. Pardon the run on sentence, but I’m fuming about the way we keep allowing the leftist media control the debate.

I agree with Erickson, she was not bi-partisan and she interrupted Ryan when he was making key points. She allowed Biden to interrupt repeatedly like a school boy having a hissy fit. She lost control in the beginning. Biden was disrespectful and Radditz was disrespectful. Two peas in a pod.
Soledad is bias and carry’s water for the Democrats daily, why should she be any different today. All of media has sold their souls for Obama. One day it will come bite them in the a$$.

Martha Raddatz, the moderator, was intimidated by Biden in the debate last night, treating her worse than a child, causing her to back down to him. I feel sorry for her as she lost control of the debate early on. Biden lacks dignity and class. Biden’s behavior was not befitting of the office of Vice President and/or the President of the United States of America. He was abusive, interruptive, arrogant, or in other words acted like a street bully. I have trouble understanding why anyone would find him a fit person to hold such an important office in this country. Ryan acted calm and collected, and polite. As far as issues go, well Ryan was not allowed to expand much on his issues being interrupted so many times. We already know where Biden stands on the issues and if you are happy with the last four years, well, that’s your right. But if you‘re not then you know already who to vote for and this debate and this letter won’t change your mind. If you want Obama/Biden and they win then expect this country to degrade quickly into a third world country. In other words change the Blue field and stars in our flag to a red background with a yellow hammer and sickle and expect the worst. God Bless this USA. This wonderful country can be lost and lost forever. This from a Vietnam Veteran.

  Don’t forget that Ryan didn’t speak the entire 90 minutes, when you exclude the time Ratsass and The Joker spent talking, Ryan probably only had 35-40 minutes of actual speaking. During which he was interrupted 113 times apparently.

She tried to steer Joe back on course a few times, but he wasn’t taking the bait…

He rambled on totally out of control. This guy is a heartbeat away from the hot seat and he CLEARLY has a few mental issues. And I’m being kind…

I thought Ryan did an excellent job holding his temper. But he was clearly bewildered at Joe’s display and her lack of control of the situation.

Everyone expected old Joe to make an axx of himself and he didn’t disappoint anyone…

It appears that every time I address an issue you are involved in, it is rather simple to point out your myopia. So to keep it in simple terms, I’ll mention one egregious point, one that proves Biden childish, and one that uncloaks your bias.

It has been noted that Biden INTERRUPTED Ryan some 80+ times. Ms Obrien, is this the fruit of a man who is temperate, slow to anger, patient, self controlled? I humbly submit it is not, for how, when, where, why do you see this behavior at the highest level? Surely he was coached to do this, do ‘derail’ his opponent anad confuse the audience, turning the issue into an alleged weakness of Ryan. An old trick maam, and Biden was found out.

How dare he interruipt Ryan as he was making his cogent thoughts? Does Biden interrupt the saviour Obama? God forbid, even a housefly is more useful and has more sense. You maam, cannot reason due to the blindness of your cause, Biden was a national embarrassment not even worthy of a high school debate team. Even the youngsters have more manners. This is he who represents the president displaying kindergarten antics? This is Obama representative?

Again, he was weighed in the balance and found to be wanting, and you are equally guilty maam for your aiding and abetting in the sinking ship.

Was it any wonder that she was so blatently one-sided. This was a terrible choice. She was a horrible moderator. Soledad Obrien is an idiot, and her arguement is ridiculous. IF moderators are supposed to just get out of the way, why was sho so conveniently nice to Biden and rude to Ryan. That said, Ryan should have been much more forceful and not let her trample his comments.

Ryan will get better quickly at dealing with jackasses like Joe Biteme.
The moderator did fine. I didnt notice any bias. She let both candidates
get long-winded at times.

In this instance, Ryan’s inexperience was an advantage — he allowed
Bitme to hang himself.

  You, sir, need to get out of the bodybag, she interrupted (read the article) Ryan over 30 times compared to her interrupting Biden 19 times and as a moderator she should have also admonished Biden’s constantly talking over Ryan but but Oh right she’s a democrat “journalist”.

  Life isnt fair. Deal with it. When you start blaming extraneous factors you become
  like Barry. Winners play the cards they’re dealt —– improvise, adapt, overcome.
  Ryan did that last night —- superbly.
  
  I make no secret of whose side Im on but Im no blind zealot. I try to call it fairly.
  I’ll call Barry a Marxist because he is one. I’ll call his court clowns liars because
  they are. I’ll call Barry a destroyer because I know full well everything he’s doing is on
  purpose to collapse this country & our economy.
  
  There was nothing more wrong with Martha Radditz than Jim Lerher. It is what it is.
  It would not have mattered who moderated — Biden went in there with the singular
  purpose of domineering & bullying the entire event to carry water for his punk ass boss.
  He destroyed himself in a great many people’s minds [including mine] and Ryan
  ended up looking like the only sober professional adult in the room.

Of course the crypt keeper lost control of the debate,she allowed the old drunk to ramble on and interrupt Ryan. Biden looked like Jack Nicholson in one flew over the cuckoo’s nest.

  Hell Slayer, she interrupted Ryan every chance she got too! The head of the RNC and DNC should have to agree on the moderators in advance from now on. Leaving it up to the press and media to pick them is a sucker’s game.
