The U.S. is heading towards fiscal disaster and no one in Washington is doing anything about it, the authors of the Simpson-Bowles reform plan and Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein told CNBC Thursday.
“People are never going to understand how critical this particular time in history is,” said Erskine Bowles, the North Carolina businessman and co-chairman of President Barack Obama’s National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. “We have $7.7 trillion worth of economic events that are going to hit America in the gut in December, and in Washington they’re doing nothing about it.”
Bowles’ co-chair on the commission was former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson, who said political culture in Washington is preventing any action to address what is known as the “fiscal cliff.”
“They’re both in this,” Simpson said of the warring Democratic and Republican parties. “They worship the god of re-election.”
Wall Street titan Blankfein said resolving the conflict would go a long way toward rejuvenating confidence in the financial markets.
“I think the (presidential) candidates know how serious it is,” he said. “I think they’re trying to avoid it in part because it is so consequential and serious, and the ideas that would be put forward are unattractive to some people.”
If the political differences were settled and a solution to the fiscal cliff devised — even one that is far afield from the Simpson-Bowles recommendations — it would mean a lot to markets and businesses such as Goldman, he added.
“I’d be a buyer of this market. Goldman Sachs would,” Blankfein said. “We’re not only advisers to companies, we’re a company ourselves. We would assume that our business would grow.”
As things stand, though, Simpson said investors are putting too much faith in Congress and the White House to work out a deal, making the stock market a risky proposition.
“The guys who are working and putting to the side are going to make it, and the guys who are just whistling around the market — and I’m not here to dampen that — but holy smoke,” he said. “They really believe honestly that no Congress could be this stupid, and by God, they can.”
The trio spoke jointly as the moment of truth for the so-called fiscal cliff approaches.
The term comes from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who used it to describe the peril of what will happen should the automatic tax increases and massive spending cuts be allowed to take effect on Jan. 1.
Economists peg the damage as high as $720 billion and 4.6 percent of gross domestic product.
There are several components involved.
At stake are payroll tax cuts, a fix on the alternative minimum tax, and unemployment benefits among them.
Across-the board tax cuts enacted during President George W. Bush’s term represent, at $180 billion, the biggest slice of the pie. They are targeted because Democrats consider the cuts skewed towards the rich.
Bowles identified four problem areas in the U.S.: Health-care spending that’s twice that of any other country; defense spending higher than the next 17 nations combined; a tax code that is “inefficient, ineffective, and globally anticompetitive”; and a Social Security program that has a $900 billion hole to fill over the next decade.
All three expressed worry over whether other countries would continue to lend to the U.S. considering its current $16 trillion debt and $1.1 trillion budget deficit.
“We’re at a tipping point,” Simpson said. “The tipping point is when the people who loan us money say ‘you’re addicted’ … and so we’re going to loan you more money, but we want more money for our money. Interest rates will kick up and inflation. The guy who gets hurt worst is the little guy.”
Bowles pointed out that revenue does nothing more than pay for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. All other expenses are paid for with borrowing “and half of it was borrowed from foreign countries,” he said.
Simpson bemoaned the political divide: Democrats who portray the Republican Medicare reform plan as “throwing old ladies off cliffs,” and Republicans who “didn’t come to limit government, they came to stop it.”
He added: “If you want to know about a stimulus, whether you’re listening to (economist Paul) Krugman or whoever, we do a pretty good stimulus. It’s called the deficit — one trillion, 100 billion bucks. What the hell do you think that is?”

Oct. 12, 2012 at 3:18pmI say, tax gross income at a reasonsble rate, every individual pays the same rate on gross income. Corporations, and partnerships pay none, because Corporations DO NOT pay taxes; they just collect from you and me when they pass it on to the Consumer.
OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE, get a handle on the abuse of the spending by imposing AFTER EIGHT, MUST VACATE, and remember, this shall apply to the E., L., and J. offices.
Our Founding Fathers did not consider the abuse of power when they enacted these legislation during the Horse and Buggy Days, and they expected Honorable MEN to sit on the Supreme Court. They did not forsee the political moves to seat Liberal women on the court!

Oct. 12, 2012 at 1:19pmThe Parable of the Rich Fool
The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, “What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.”
Then he said, “This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’”
But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded of you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”
This is how it will be for anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God. — Luke 12:16-21

Oct. 12, 2012 at 8:15amThe three most un-American programs ever put in place by the US government are the 3 programs bankrupting our country: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The very structure and nature of the Constitution was not designed for these types of government programs. People’s desire to want to kick back and let the government take care of them is what has and is destroying this country. I challenge anyone to find the concept of “retirement” in the Bible. Joshua (in the Bible) was a warrior until he was 93 years of age, at which time God told him he could now rest. We were designed to toil for the Lord until the end of our lives. That is absolutely not happening. Instead people look forward to retiring at 65 or whatever the age is now, so that they can move to warmer climates where they can self-indulge in things of no consequence–too much drink, too much food and too much play. Way to go New Dealers!!!

Oct. 12, 2012 at 11:11amIf you want to work all your life, that is your option. As for myself, at age 60+ I’m enjoying my retirement. It gives me time to volunteer in my community and participate in other activities I never had time to do when I was working. For what it’s worth, I am old enough to take my social security but have not at this point. That is actually working against my financial interests but I don’t need the income at this point. I worked hard in my chosen business for 40 years and feel no obligation to do so any further. If you want to run your life based on the fairy tales that are the bible, please don’t impose it on me. Just remember that Sin is an imaginary disease created to sell you an imaginary cure!!! Don’t fall for it….

Oct. 12, 2012 at 1:12pmWell I disagree with both of you. Schoolmom: They worked longer AND lived longer in ot times, probably because the air was cleaner, food was pure, and they didn’t have as much disease. Whatever the reason you don’t see many 93 year olds out working here in America cause they can barely walk! Some do well, but most don’t. I agree with WINEDUDE on the fact that some of us as we get older don’t feel like punching a time clock and jumping through the slavery hoops but we can volunteer at homeless shelters, watch children, or help families. Maybe you haven’t been in the job market for awhile but if its a good job they scrutinize everything about you–including your health. In my profession they want a full physical before theyll hire you and if you have been treated for anything (arthritis, etc.) they probably wont hire you. Now if you have your own business, maybe you could work longer. I could never “not work”–I would always have to be giving or doing something–but most of it won’t give me a paycheck. Just think how many people work their entire lives and NEVER collect their SS! The money someone gave for years goes back into the pot. This happnes alot and you wont hear about it on the news. We were meant to work, yes. But we weren’t meant to jump thru beurocratic hoops for 90 years! Yes, the fact that they let SS come into being in the first place is incredible!

Do I have any hope that Americans are going to reform? NO! Americans are spoiled children who think they are entitled to their satellite dish, their mocha caramel $5 coffee, their fake nails, piercings, and tattoos, living a lifestyle way ahead of their means, and are too good to pick fruit or clean toilets. The day of reckoning is coming because we put wants ahead of needs. We deserve what we get. But who will complain the most, and the loudest in December-January when the feces hits the fan? The spoiled children of course!
IT’S TIME TO GET OUT OF THE CITY PEOPLE. You don’t want to be in a city when it gets bad. It’s going to be really dangerous. You need to get your family to the country and get self sufficient. After the election both parties will get together during the lame duck session and kick the can down the road for another six months or so.
No, the big problem is what comes after that.
The recent dust up over Big Bird illustrates the problem very well.
In 1967 when the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was developed it was, no doubt, true that the educational offerings that PBS would provide would not be commercially viable enough for the three broadcast networks that existed at the time.
But there are so many channels now, History, Discovery etc, that provide that kind of fare that the C.P.B is no longer needed. If we can’t even agree on that, how can we ever agree on major cuts to entitlement spending?

Oct. 12, 2012 at 2:54am$7.7 Trillion in December! So, these three know about the World Bank? Blankfein does, he’s heavily invested in the new Carbon currency. Why don’t they just come out and tell the truth? The whole world runs on credit. There is NO wealth. The nations and banks have squandered it all long ago. George H. Bush put the US up for sale and since then the political parties have done nothing but party while regulating and restricting everyone else. What’s coming is going to be like nothing ever before. I can only hope Jesus comes with it.

January 20, 2013 cannot come soon enough for me.
That’s the day Mr. Romney will be sworn in as our new President.
The economy will start to improve over night, if Obama hasn’t already destroyed America by then.

Oct. 12, 2012 at 2:57amThe only flaw in your plan is that on Jan, 20th, 2013 it will be too late. The tax hikes and spending cuts will have already gone into effect. This is what Obama was up to all along, setting in place and automatic law that would trigger the economic downfall to this country. Hopefully, Romney and Ryan and a controlling number of Congressional and Senate sets, be able to repeal these actions and try to save the country.
