Here’s Why Scientists Are Claiming Global Warming Means More Ice for Antarctica

WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — It may seem counter-intuitive but scientists are saying global warming will lead to more sea ice in Antarctica, while it has the opposite effect in the Arctic.

TheBlaze reported data collected by the National Snow and Ice Data Center last month showing that the Arctic had reached record melt, which was attributed by experts to both natural and man-made global warming at the time.

As the North Pole loses ice, the South Pole has been gaining it. Antarctic sea ice hit a record 7.51 million square miles in September. Watch this animated map showing the record amount of ice next to a comparison of ice levels in previous years:

Climate scientists say this should not be cause for those skeptical of man-made global warming to refute the issue though.

The Associated Press reports experts saying a shift in wind patterns and a hole in the ozone layer, which are attributable to human activity, are likely to increase ice.

“A warming world can have complex and sometimes surprising consequences,” researcher Ted Maksym, with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, said this week from an Australian research vessel surrounded by Antarctic sea ice.

“Scientifically the change is nowhere near as substantial as what we see in the Arctic,” NASA chief scientist and ice expert Waleed Abdalati said. “But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be paying attention to it and shouldn’t be talking about it.”

The Arctic ice responds more directly to warmth. In the Antarctic, the main driver is wind, Maksym and other scientists say. Changes in the strength and motion of winds are now pushing the ice farther north, extending its reach.

Those changes in wind are tied in a complicated way to climate change from greenhouse gases, Maksym and Scambos say. Climate change has created essentially a wall of wind that keeps cool weather bottled up in Antarctica, NASA’s Abdalati says.

And the wind works in combination with the ozone hole, the huge gap in Earth’s protective ozone layer that usually appears over the South Pole. It’s bigger than North America.

The hole makes Antarctica even cooler this time of year because the ozone layer usually absorbs solar radiation, working like a blanket to keep the Earth warm. And that cooling effect makes the winds near the ground stronger and steadier, pushing the ice outward, Scambos says.

This is sophistry. The original CO2 theory of global warming predicted run-away warming, wtihout any self-corrective mechanisms. If one is to now invoke self-corrective mechanisms – as with more rain and snow being created due to higher evaporation cause by increased temperatures, then one is going back to the older and more accurate homeostatic theory of cyclical climate changes. That theory always predicted as temperatures warmed, there would be compensating increases in water evaporation, with more clouds snow and rain by which temperatures would then moderate and cool back down, starting the cycle over once again. To now proclaim that this increase in Antarctic ice was predicted by CO2 theory is patently false. it wasn’t. Nor can it be explained by CO2 theory. It is explained by cyclical homeostatic theory.

I think that if you go back 100′s and millions of years and check out the icing history in the Artic and Anarctic that when one of them is melting the other is making up for it by creating ice. Get used to it it’s nature.

What are we supposed to take away from the 1979-2012 video of the Antarctica? I see no change in the diameter of ice? What do they have to compare it to? Anything before 1979? The AP is full of s hi t when they say the hole in the ozone was man-caused. The theory of the ozone hole as being caused by CFC’s was debunked. From what I have read, it is a naturally occuring, annual process. The WHOi is full of –it, too. I don’t trust anything they say, because they receive funding for what they find.

  Correct me if I’m wrong but the crux of the amn made global warming cult is….the globe is warming.
  That is implying the whole globe and it would seem to ne antiarticia is part of the globe. Liast time I check it was on earth. Now the tricky part if a globe is warming WHY WOULD ICE BE GROWING?
  I think I just had an enlighted moment of clarity they’re just a Cult that includes member of a commuinty once was thought to be searching for the truth and actually helping society.

  EXACTLY! How many times have we heard ‘Weather is not the same as climate.’ whenever we see record low temperatures. “CLIMATE occurs over centuries.” they say. But everytime we have a hot day, or a drought or a hurricane, they call it ‘climate change’. Even ardent climate change advocates agree that the earth has warmed one single solitary degree over the past 100 years, so don’t tell me how you ‘remember how cold it was when you were a kid’.

  Interesting, in 1945 a flight of 4 p39 and 1 super fort crashed in the Arctic and one of the aircraft was recovered from the ice. Problem was it was 33 feet below the snow and ice. So they have not shown up yet and I bet they won/t..

I’d like the “global warmists” to explain to me how we’re having anthropogenic global warming now when over a thousand years ago Scandinavians were able to settle on the southern end of Greenland and for 300+ years to survive and thrive raising sheep and goats and farming which can’t be done now. If global warming now is caused by people, what were the people a thousand years ago doing to cause this warming? They weren’t burning oil or much coal, and there likely weren’t half a billion people wandering around either, yet evidence indicates that the global temperature was somewhat warmer than it currently is.

Anthropogenic global warming is all about control of us and what we do. The warmists seem to believe that they know best how we should all live, rather like the current administration. They’re equally wrong.

  What they won’t tell you is that the ice breaks off and refreezes every year, like any normal summer/winter cycle. We cannot trust our government to tell us the truth about about a terrorist attack that was filmed and witnessed by actual people. Yes of course it makes sense now………the warmer it gets the more ice you get. Nothing like a nice warm beer……..this explains the icicles in my oven last night. I feel like such an idiot all this time I’ve been freezing ice……wata dope…….I’ll just pop the ice trays in the oven tonight.

When I was a kid we got rid of aerosol cans because the ozone was disappearing and we were going to burn up.
Now the ozone disappearing is causing cooling?

I don’t see a significant change in the ice covering Antarctica. It changes shape but the area remains relatively the same.

Why doesn’t someone measure the air composition over time. Is there an increase in “greenhouse gasses”. Give me some real facts and not Al Gore “facts”.

Try again with this global warming thing. I am not convinced.

  Actually, they have done that and each time, it debunks their theories. Atmospheric CO2 has been as high as 2.5 times higher than what it is now. For those wondering how they do it, everything from core samples in ancient ice to sealed pots found in ancient ruins to rock samples. NASA has learned that Venus has high levels of CO2 do to its heat and not the other way around. Evidence points to CO2 going up after a warming event, not the cause. But, they just lie and continue to lie.
