Lip Reader Tells Us the Mysterious Phrase Joe Biden Mouthed to Paul Ryan Last Night
During last night’s vice presidential debate, Joe Biden did something very interesting: at one point he turned and mouthed something to Paul Ryan so that the microphone’s couldn’t pick it up. We’ve been wondering what, exactly, was said. And now a lip reader is telling us what he thinks.
First, here’s the curious moment — which happened during the back-and-forth about Medicare (go to about the one-minute mark):
On Friday’s edition of Glenn Beck’s radio show, he brought on one of his employees — Adam — who is a lip reader (Adam used to be deaf before getting a Cochlear implant). According to Adam, Biden leaned over and mouthed, “You’re so funny.”
“I think it’s clear he said, ‘You’re so funny,’” Adam said in an email Beck read on air.
He added there’s “no way” Biden said “you’re so full of it” or “you’re so full of sh**” as some have suggested.
“I admit it is possible he said ‘you’re so freaking–’ and then caught himself,” but added that the body language doesn’t seem to suggest that.
Below are copies of the email exchanges:
My initial reaction to this when I first saw it was that Biden is saying, “You’re so funny.” The more I watched it the more I became convinced that’s what he said. This seems backed up to me by the fact that he laughs immediately afterward. Some might try to argue that Biden was reacting in response to Martha Raddatz’s comment that “something tells me I won’t get a very simple answer,” but Biden’s laugh starts well before she said this. I think it’s clear he said, “You’re so funny.”
Clearly, Biden doesn’t take Paul Ryan’s concerns over the need for entitlement reform seriously. But we already knew these guys don’t take this seriously, so I guess there’s not much new there.
And later:
By the way, I looked through a bunch of the comments on [a different] article and a lot of people are saying he said, “You’re so full of it” or “You’re so full of shit.” There’s no way he said either of this. Look at his jaw as he talks — he only makes four syllables, which fits with “You’re so funny,” but not with “You’re so full of it.” Plus, in order to say “You’re so full of shit,” his cheeks and lips would have to move quite a bit differently in order to make the “sh” sound in “shit.” I admit that it IS possible he started to say, “You’re so freaking –” and then caught himself before finishing, but there’s no indication from his body language that he had to stop himself mid-sentence, which suggests to me he finished what he meant to say, which is: “You’re so funny.”
Do you have any theories? Agree or disagree?
UPDATE:
We emailed Adam and asked him if it’s possible Biden said “You’re so full–” and caught himself. Here is his response [emphasis added]:
Is it possible? Yes, of course. Is it likely? No. I say it’s not likely for a couple reasons:
First, think about what you do when you catch yourself before you say something you’d rather not say. Don’t you usually have a physical movement — even if it’s slight — that also stops right in its tracks along with your words? I think most people do. We don’t see that here. What we see is one fluid motion from looking at Ryan to turning his head back down while smiling and saying something.
Second, try saying “full,” and freeze your tongue right where it ends up at the end of “full.” It’s probably just barely between your teeth, right? Now try saying “fun,” and freeze your tongue right where it ends up. It’s probably right behind your top row of teeth now. With that in mind, go watch Biden again. It’s hard to tell exactly because of the way he moves his head, but there does not appear to be any evidence of his tongue having moved into the position your tongue has to go into to make an “L” sound, but it does look like he could have made an “N.” In addition, notice what happens to your cheeks when you say “full” versus when you say “fun” or “funny.” For “full,” your cheeks will move forward and your lips outward. For “fun” or “funny,” your cheeks move back and slightly down with your jaw while your lips spread open. I don’t see any evidence of Biden having moved his cheeks or lips in the way he would have had he said “full.” But he did move his lips in about the way you would if you said “funny.” Granted, he was laughing and grinning through it, which may exaggerate the facial movements that are similar to saying “funny,” but I still see very little evidence that he said “full.”

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 12:40pmJoe Biden has shown us last night just how much “NO CLASS” the democrat party and this administration really has. He displayed a totally immature, insulting, arrogant, childish attitude and conduct as I have seen from any high level official in our government. This sort of unprofessionalism is rampant throughout this administration. It’s like having grade school children running our government. (No disrespect to grade school children intended, their immaturity is natural) Vote this commune of trash and hypocrites out of our government……..

Obamas helping the muslim brotherhood is in my book an act of treason. its time we started putting traitors in jail not letting them off the hook so they can help their buddys do the same again to us.

Also, Adam’s reading is not consistent with Biden’s behavior or with the other insults he hurled at Biden: “bunch of malarkey, this is a bunch of stuff, not a single thing he said was true, I wish he would just tell… be a little more candid.”

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 12:30pmWhat angers me is that Biden kept referring to his parents and their Social Security.. that isn’t the only entitlement… mind you, people put money into SS for decades and they also put into welfare.. when its so obvoius that its the welfare system and generational abusers are what irks the American taxpayer. And I have know plenty welfare, SSI abusers, who abuse the government regularly. A neighbor who has since moved was the worse I have ever seen, behind 6 months in rent, behind months in both gas and lights.. and they work the system like pro’s. Why can’t they pay their bills?? Drugs.. and I mean street drugs. These are the entitlement people who should be dumped from the system! Not old people who worked hard for decades and put into the system for their retirement years.. Biden clearly tried to scare seniors. Seniors had better wake up.. my husband and I live on SS.. and we know it needs to be fixed. Or it will be gone! Abusers of entitlements should clean up or be thrown out on their ear.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 1:42pmI think I saw that the number of people on welfare went up after Owebama got rid of Workfare. These people need to be reporting for work, even if it’s the local road department or waste management facility. I would bet my life that most of them are able bodied and can work and SHOULD be earning welfare. If you o on welfare, you need to STRICTLY be on contraceptives or no money. This class of generational welfare needs to end. It and the free welfare for illegals (who are not entitled, nor have EVER earned it) are what is killing us. Everyone on welfare needs to be drug tested. You fail, strike one. You only get three strikes. The SSI disability needs o be investigated for fraud. I know some people that coached their chilfdren o act like they had ADD/ADHD so they could get put on disability and the disability office encouraged it. I am 45% disabled and I will keep working until I can’t, because my family will lose insurance if I quit.
I am DAMN tired of supporting lazy-asses who won’t work, but can ride around and party all day in and out.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 12:28pmLook, this ‘debate’ clearly was not meant for the undecided. It was meant to re-strengthen the Democratic base. And by all accounts, looking at the media, unions, community orgs and like minds, it did just that.
Those that ARE undecided, got a clear picture of what they are tired of. The tactics of talking over, laughing, rolling eyes, smirks and sighs. That is the Democratic way. To put FEELINGS over FACTS, and move on, calling when their lie is exposed, “Old news.”
One person called it right, “A cranky old man against a polite young man.”…but as far as a ‘debate’, it was not, just tactics that were moderated by the same mindset.

My favorite comment from him last night was telling Ryan and others like him to “get out of the way”. Well, they were out of the way the first two years and look at the results. A historic mid-term 2010 election where the progressives were stomped on. Was anything learned from that? No, double and triple down and, oh, “get out of the way”. Are Romney/Ryan the solution?….no, its too late to stop the inevitable …”they” have infiltrated most worthy human institutions on a scale that is unimaginable. Heck, most conservatives don’t see the dark side for what it really is either….

Then, just as the DOD does with local landlords – the government will regulate, or put a Health care provider on a naughty list. Either way, you’re going to get a single payer system unless Americans decide they are not entitled to live until 100. But I understand, most Americans don’t give it this much thought, because they truly do not know the Son.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 11:42amMuch ado about nothing. Delving into minutiae regarding four syllables (at least in this case) is pointless. What matters here is the outcome of the debate – Biden lost.
Also, who lied – Hillary or Biden? The State Department, or the POS Gaybama?

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 11:40amHaha. The truth of the matter is that anything the government does it does with flaws. Any kind of voucher program will fail whether it’s for education, or medicare, because it won’t keep up with inflation, as it will be the vouchers are based on taxation which will require Congressional action to develop funding for increases in costs. It’s like basing a government program on cigarette taxes only an inverted approach, but the same thing nonetheless. It would have the same affect as with military housing allowances, which don’t keep up with rising housing costs and requires Congressional action to increase the allowance.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 11:46amAnd the fact of the matter is (as with what happens with other businesses) Health care providers will have secret meetings to develop a way for boosting costs because of greed, and then the government will come in to regulate, and right back to square one.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 11:56amYou ******, have you kept up with any of the school voucher programs? Every where they have been tried, they have been very, very successful, so successful the liberal education system fights them like typical liberals. Liberals always fight against good things and fight for bad things, every day is opposites day to retarded liberals.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 12:05pmHeck it isn’t a shocker that the voucher programs work well right now, because they are working hard [to prove] the voucher program works, but once all the enthusiasm has settled along along with the liberal education system fading – then corruption will once again be rampant driving costs through the roof for which the voucher system will fall behind in. Then, just as the DOD does with local landlords – the government will regulate, or put a Health care provider on a naughty list. Either way, you’re going to get a single payer system unless Americans decide they are not entitled to live until 100 years old at the expense of future children.
