(TheBlaze/AP) — Apple Inc. is set to reveal a smaller, cheaper version of the iPad at an event on Oct. 23, according to several reports published Friday.
The reports from Bloomberg News, Reuters and the AllThingsD blog are based on unnamed sources “familiar with the plans.”
Apple Inc. hasn’t said anything about a smaller tablet, a concept company founder Steve Jobs derided two years ago. But company-watchers have assumed for months that an “iPad mini” will appear just in time for the holiday season.
The screen is reportedly about half the size of the iPad’s, which measures 9.7 inches diagonally. Analysts speculate the starting price of the device could be about $299.
With the device, Apple could close an opening in the tablet market for rivals like Amazon.com Inc., whose Kindle Fire is half the size of the iPad and starts at $199. Google Inc. and Barnes and Noble Inc. also sell tablets in the same size and price range.
Apple’s event would occur three days before Microsoft Corp. releases Windows 8, the new version of its operating system. Microsoft will be releasing its “Surface” tablets with the software.
Apple’s stock rose $1.61 on Friday to close at $629.71.

Posted on October 13, 2012 at 9:02amApple has hired a chip developer, their contract with Intel ends in 2013. Apple has been moving toward cloud storage. If the chip developer can assist them with attaining on chip software (OSX burned into a combination GPU – CPU chip). This would make all their devices impregnable to viruses and provide users with a blade system which has its storage and retrieval in the cloud. Apple has proven that there simply is no need to have high end computers unless you are crunching numbers, manipulating video, or playing memory and graphics intensive games.
This new iPad (if it exists) will be a less expensive version of blade computing which will provide lower end users access to Appel’s system of computing. Imagine re-releasing the iPad II which is completely capable as a Wi-Fi device, in a smaller package. I wouldn’t expect to see these available with 3 or 4 G access only Wi-Fi. Although this is supposition as Apple has not yet made a confirmation to a mini iPad. If in fact the do release an iPad mini, I suspect you will see the iPod touch go away as there will be no need for two almost identical devices.

Posted on October 13, 2012 at 10:10amDo I detect a whiff of envy? Apple has always manufactured quality and ease of use from its inception. Their products are the best bar none and worth every penny. There is no comparison with PC’s or any other product. The rest all feel like Apple knockoffs.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 9:25pmBeing prepared doesn’t mean throw the baby out with the bath water. Just because you can’t imagine a function for an IPad, doesn’t mean it’s without function. Whether we ‘make it or not, this sort of technology will be around, and more than likely, the worse our future is, the more probable people which know what they are doing with these devices are going to have a role to play. I can help people build firewall infrastructure and fix database cracks via virtual desktop with a tablet and I’m a novice compared to many of my peers. Just because you only see people playing angry birds on them doesn’t mean they are without value. Besides, Mr. Beck, the man who built this site, uses these devices every day – is he wasting his money and time?

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 8:08pmYeppers…time to toss the old one in the trash and go further into debt for yet another high tech toy that nobody really needs.
I though we were suppose to be buying bullets/beans/bandaids & gold? Oh, and getting out of debt before the fall comes.
So unless this has a kevlar skin and can double as a chest plate…I’ll pass.

Posted on October 12, 2012 at 8:46pmI agree where are all of the tree huggers and environmentalists? These use precious metals, chemicals etc, not to mention the batteries and all the hazards they pose. Can’t these companies give a little time between devices? I can care less but it is wort noting APPLE is a granola company…They are the first group of people to fall for global warming, and the first to go after the rest of us on issues like firearm ownership, smoking etc…
