‘Friday Night Lights’ Author Describes How He Was ‘Savaged’ After Endorsing Mitt Romney

“Friday Night Lights” author and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Buzz Bissinger kicked up a firestorm after becoming the most recent public figure to endorse Mitt Romney last week.

Describing himself as a lifelong Democrat from New York’s Upper West Side, or “the country’s nexus of liberalogy,” he admitted in a Daily Beast article that he still clings to his roots, but moves further to the right as he ages. The article analyzes the policy positions of the two candidates, which he says he studied “assiduously,” and concludes with the assertion that “Romney has it.”

So what was the public’s reaction to his lengthy endorsement? He says about “6 to 1,” it was hateful, expletive-filled insults.

Speaking with Howard Kurtz on CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” Bissinger joked that he should “at least” be in the Witness Protection Program given the public’s reaction.

He explained:

“I would say between the Daily Beast comments, Twitter comments, Facebook comments– roughly…4,000 comments– I ran about 6-1 against. And it wasn’t just, you know, ‘I disagree with you.’ It was the f-word, it was ‘you’re a baby killer.’

“It was even friends, [but] among friends it wasn’t as vitriolic. There was this sense of, ‘How dare you, you’re traitor. You’re a writer. You’re a journalist. How can you possibly come out in favor of this man?’”

“…You could feel the anguish, you could feel the sense of perhaps traitorship. I am a lifelong Democrat…”

From there, the two discussed what exactly it means that Bissinger’s friends have branded him a “traitor.”

Bissinger remarked:

“There’s no doubt in my mind that there’s a definite liberal bias in the mainstream media…You are simply not expected, when you’re a journalist and a writer, to endorse a Republican. And don’t tell me it does not seep into the coverage. I mean, you look at The New York Times, you look at their editorial today on Afghanistan, you would feel it’s the Republicans’ fault we’re still there, but that’s Obama’s decision. It does seep in, and I know because as a journalist it seeped in when I wrote for the Philadelphia Enquirer.”

So what has he learned from the experience?

Bissinger said:

I thought liberals were supposed to be ‘open-minded.’ I thought they were supposed to accept divergent viewpoints to at least say, ‘hey, everyone in America has a right to an opinion.’ But it’s really about– ‘I love free speech as long as it’s the free speech that I want’ … Liberals have this sense of themselves, but 90% are as nasty, as vitriolic, as vicious as the conservatives they say are…

When asked about why he came back swinging against his critics on Twitter, Bissinger remarked: “I don’t like taking crap, and I don’t like taking abuse when I feel it’s misplaced.”

  All Mr.Bissinger needs to do share the information below with those ignorant folks attacking him. After the election, win or lose, President Obama already has it worked out to devalue the U.S.D in the name of “fairness” to the world (bring America down to “even things out” in the world). If you’ve seen the motion picture or read the book”Obama 2016″ you already know this but many still are not fully aware. If the people who called Bissinger a “traitor” did their homework they’d realize this is far more serious of an election than Ford-Carter or Bush-Gore or Dole-Clinton etc. This is nothing like we Americans have ever faced before – perhaps since our nation was founded. Our very way of life is at stake. Not surprising they don’t know what’s going on though when you go and look and see “Miley Cyrus Tattoo” is the number one search term in the U.S over the weekend.

I obviously live in a trailer, have no teeth and sleep with anything including animals. 2. I should be raped by a crazed lunatic and forced to raise a “mutant” child. 3. many people seem to think I need to be shipped to Afghanistan. 4. anything that has happened is due to the prior president, out of office almost 4 years or rather more bizarre, the fault of Romney -when I point out he is not in office, they came back with “see that just shows how stupid you are” what?   There was one show on Twilight Zone or Outer limits that was about a space craft comes to earth and gives humans a book to decipher “it was in their language”. They then take humans with them and as their ship is going up someone comes out saying we figured out what the book says. It was a cookbook on how to cook humans. I have never seen that one since.

  Baby killer is a slur directed at returning soldiers, starting with Vietnam vets, who supposedly killed women and children just for fun. It’s not about abortion, they don’t consider that killing babies, rather simply flushing a clump of cells, like blowing your nose.

So true, we have been trying to get you to see this for a long time. We speak the truth when we describe what we see in the left. Their anger and violence comes from a deep seated self loathing. Deep down they can see what kind of beings they really are and they must lie endlessly to cover this up even from themselves. It is the only way they can bear what they have become, by lying to themselves and projecting their lies and all that is darkness within their souls upon those they hate for merely being right and true.

  The vitriol always comes from the “party of tolerance,” the Dems/libs/progressives. They are tolerant only when the free speech lines up with what they think. It is never the other way around. When Stacey Dash came out in support of Romney, it was the left that called her horrible names. When someone famous comes out in support of Obama, my first thought is not to take to the social networks and think of every rotten name I can call them. My first and only thought is usually something along the lines of “poor fool,” or “Kool-Aid drinker.” I also would never consider defacing somebody’s Obama sign in their yard…it’s a free country and we’re free to disagree. True intolerance comes from the left.
