Rob Portman: Obama Will ‘Come Out Swinging’, Romney Can Win Without Ohio
Ohio Senator Rob Portman has arguably one of the more difficult jobs in the Romney campaign – he’s tasked with pretending to be Barack Obama during Mitt Romney’s debate prep sessions. So when he predicts the President will do something in a debate, it’s probably based on more than just simple intuition. In all likelihood, it’s what he’s been doing in every single one of Romney’s debate prep sessions himself.
And if Portman’s comments on today’s “This Week” are any guide, Romney probably isn’t enjoying those debate prep sessions very much. Speaking to ABC’s Jake Tapper, Portman predicted a blisteringly negative performance by the president aimed at making up as much ground as possible against Romney after the president’s previous – widely panned – debate performance.
The transcript of the relevant piece of Portman’s conversation with Tapper is as follows:
TAPPER: And this morning, Washington Post reporter Dan Balz called you, quote, “the Romney campaign’s most valuable player” for your multiple roles as Ohio point man and Obama stand-in. I’m assuming you’re anticipating that President Obama will have a little bit more pep in his step in Tuesday’s debate. How do you prepare for that?
PORTMAN: Well, I think you’re right. I think President Obama is going to come out swinging. I think he’s going to have to compensate for a poor first debate, and I think that’ll be consistent with what they’ve been doing this whole campaign, Jake, which is running a highly negative ad campaign. They’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars around the country, including a lot in Ohio, mischaracterizing Governor Romney’s positions and misrepresenting him. And I think you’ll see that again at the debate on Tuesday night.
Portman also told Tapper that the Romney campaign’s focus on the crucial swing state of Ohio is a matter of choice, rather than of necessity.
“He can probably win the presidency without Ohio, but I wouldn’t want to take the risk,” Portman said. “No Republican has. And we’re doing great in Ohio. If you look at the average of all the polls, it’s about dead-even in Ohio right now. And importantly, the momentum’s on our side. It’s been terrific.”
Portman is correct on both points – given that Romney arguably has successfully put away the states of Florida and Virginia (where he is listed as a favorite by the left-leaning poll guru Nate Silver), and may also take Colorado (where he leads according to the RealClearPolitics average), then his path to victory can go through several states other than Ohio. He could, for instance, take Wisconsin and Iowa, or Wisconsin and New Hampshire, or Wisconsin and Nevada and still win the Presidency.
At the same time, Portman’s caution is also understandable. No Republican has won the presidency without the Ohio in the past 50 years, and exerting the effort to take one state is likely less complicated than taking two.

After the debates Obama will still be black, and that’s the only reason a majority of Dem voters are voting for him. Instead of voting for country, they vote for party.

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 5:24pmThe first presidential debate seemed to me that President Obama acted more like a young child or boy of around 5 or 6 years old as he often looked to the floor and pouted as if he felt he were being chasized or admolished by a parent or adult for doing something wrong. When he responded he studdered and hammered like a kid talking to an authority figure and knowing they were in trouble. Mitt Romney clearly came out with the appearance of being a mature, intelligent, wise adult with a command of all the issues. With the scene Joe Biden put out on his debate with Paul Ryan I do suspect President Obama to come out fighting this time around. In fact what I believe will happen is President Obama will grow from being a small child to being a defiant, angry, unruly teenager trying to defend against a very capable, mature, intelligent adult. This will be huge as President Obama goes into melt-down trying to make a come back against Mitt Romeny and showing the world he is not competent nor is he mature but is a defiant, angry, selfish teenager who never grew up.

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 6:51pm@Gonzo, I always include how terrible the Obama administration has been on this issue as well. Usually making a smart-ass remark that he has taken us forward to 1215. I tell everyone how it was he that asked the language that prohibited the indefinite detention of Americans be removed from the NDAA, how he acted like his disliked it, said he wouldn’t use it, but appealed a federal court decision that ruled it unconstitutional. I tell them how Biden wrote the Patriot Act years prior to the 9/11 attacks. My position with everyone I speak with on this subject is neither party is different from one another in this regard, and that’s the truth.
@Honor, I’m seeing a lot more signs for Romney than Obama in Columbus. Even a 20′ new age screen billboard with the “Bo must Go” on 270. My friends and family are mostly for Romney though they’re not happy he’s the nominee. (who is, right?) My FB friends seem to be evenly split with the most vocal support for Romney (well ABO) I don’t know about the rest of the state, but central Ohio seems to be leaning towards Romney solely based on my conversations and perception. Certainly nothing scientific. I know most of the people I convince to vote Libertarian are lefties because of the civil liberties and warmongering of Obama. My conservative friends are mostly toting the party line. I’ve already let them know I’ll be gloating and telling them “I told you so” if he happens to win and changes nothing.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 4:07amThe Libertarians pull support from both sides. We’re actually a diverse group. Within the Liberty Movement there are some that aren’t voting at all, some voting Johnson or Goode, or writing in RP others voting for Obama and some voting for Romney. Last week I was leaning towards not voting. This week voting for Johnson, who knows what I’ll think next week. I know I’m deeply dissatisfied with the two candidates because they are deplorable in terms of rights/civil liberties and I dislike their interventionist foreign policy. I really look at the entire process as an exercise in futility, but because Johnson is polling at 3-6.5% I think shooting for public funding for next time around and easier ballot access might influence the RNC to stand by their stated principles rather than trying to appease independents by acting like the other guy. Just keep in mind that if, as you say, the libertarians you know are pulling votes away from Obama rather than Romney, they are not helping Obama beat Romney by voting the way their conscience dictates. I’m tired of that illogical argument.

I cant explain this in a post, but if you saw “2016: Obama’s America” then you’ll know

that he could use his race to con everyone. All he had to do was not be the “angry black man”

Remember his race speeches? What a racket. Create the guilt and then collect

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 4:42pmConcerning Obama in the upcoming debate…
His ego/narcissism that will not allow him to admit to wrongdoing or accept blame. He may have by now convinced himself the last debate was a fluke, a stolen opportunity due to ‘other influences’ on him as so many of the left claimed right afterward (even the idiot Gore).
So we may see him come out hyper aggressive, determined to crush Romney once and for all, the man he now sees as a personal nightmare and the cause of his problems/pains. In this case, there will be no end of his badgering, anger, rage, hate and purest of slander filled vitriolic solely directed at Romney on all the fabrications he and the left can create.
The second probability, Obama’s narcissism will not allow him to acknowledge Romney as a worthy opponent, and he will again be crippled by the web of lies, illusion and deceptions he is now entrapped within.
Understand clearly – in the second case, if pushed by himself or Romney hard enough; we may see the complete emotional and mental collapse of Obama on live camera.

There was announced a ‘press conference’ for early on a Saturday I believe it was. It was to be his very first ‘real’ press conference and I think it was not widely viewed. I think it was to have gone for an hour but after about three questions he just cut it off and walked off saying something like ‘those kind of questions are just off limits’. I don’t remember what those were or especially the very last one asked. BUT JUST the act of walking away, I was astounded and thought to myself, well, this will certainly make big news the next day. Crickets. Nuthin’. And when by the next day virtually nothing mentioned about it, I started worrying and haven’t stopped since. I wish someone could find video of that press conference. So, by the same logic: if I were alive before civil rights and integration — but I really wanted integration, I would have been guilty by the mere fact that I was white and could get into any club, hotel, etc? Even though I was upset by having to live with the current laws at the time?
Weak and faulty logic. Try again.

“Oh, uh, I DIFFER with the Congressman’s opinion of our current economy.”
“Why is that, Mr. President?”
“Uh, because we’ve turned things around since we ended the recession in 2009. We’d uh, inherited all of the prior administrations problems, and uh, besides, he’s a rich, racist, sexist, bigoted, anti-immigrant, homophobic wannabe who’s never shared my problems. Ah,hahahaha! Take this whitey!”, and he swings his powder puff at Romney.
The moderator looks straight-faced at Romney and says
“Pretty powerful stuff, you racist, sexist, bigoted, anti-immigrant, homophobic wannabe. How do you respond to that?”

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 4:14pmI’m so worried about obama getting reelected. The suspense is killing me. Just imagine the scorched earth policies he will impose on this nation. We may never recover if this communist is reelected. God save America.

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 4:34pmConsider the scorched earth campaign he and the Democratic leadership will enact in a lame duck session if Romney wins. They will have nothing to lose to enact via executive order, treaties waiting the Senates confirmation, or any House passed matters that Reid has tabled for such an occasion.
Do not put anything past them in the end.

I mean for America, not the muslim bros. Mitt should hammer O on his getting our ambassador murdered. On his lying about it from the beginning. On the coverup.

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 4:21pmObama and Biden reek of self-loathing and failure and they are keenly aware of the impression they give off. You can see it in their demeanor.
They are beating themselves senseless and they are doing a masterful job of it.

Posted on October 14, 2012 at 4:32pmObama will take his own advice and, since he cannot defend his own record, will attack Romney as someone that would do an even worse job as POTUS. He has no substance to fall back on, so he will try to rely on style. Style is the only thing he can improve on over the first debate. He knows that in 2008 the American people bought the product because of the packaging, without examining the contents. He will try to LOOK like a leader in hopes that history will repeat itself.
Romney has a good grasp on the facts and figures that show Obama’s policies to be disasterous for the country, and will use that to his advantage. Ryan’s keeping his cool in the face of Biden’s bombastic performance made him look more like a leader. If Obama is over the top with his attacks, and if Romney is Romney, he will look better than Obama to the independent voters.
