ABC Reportedly Censors Anti-Obama Communist Joke in Sitcom ‘Last Man Standing’

Actor Tim Allen, star of ABC’s “Last Man Standing,” made a fascinating claim in a recent interview with The New York Post. In the show’s season premiere episode, which is scheduled to air just before the election, Allen told the Post that the network, which is owned by Disney, yanked jokes about U.S. Presidents Barack Obama, and Bill and Hillary Clinton.

In the show, Allen plays a conservative — and in the episode at hand he is apparently trying to convince his daughter to vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The actor told the Post that ABC’s standards department refused to allow a joke in which his character called Obama “a communist” to air. A separate line likening the Clintons to “shingles” that “pop back” “just when you think they are gone” was also axed.

The Post has more regarding what was cut — and kept — in the upcoming episode:

“I love communist jokes,” Allen said. “The right sees everything as a communist.” [...]

Among the lines that survived:

* “Romney is a doer. It’s easy to be consistent, like Obama, when all you have done is ‘organize communities.’ ”

* “He did a great job with that South Side of Chicago. It runs like a watch down there. Of course, you can’t wear one.”

Allen said there are plenty of jokes aimed at Romney — because the network thought it was necessary to give the show some balance.

The latest issue of TV Guide confirmed the fact that there was a battle over the controversial Obama and Clinton jokes — a notion that frustrated the Media Research Center’s Tim Graham.

“ABC won’t allow certain buttons to be touched,” wrote Graham, director of media analysis at MRC. “It’s almost funny that the censors would be so lax on sex and violence, but will clamp down like Bonnie Bluehair on Obama jokes. Is this their only Thou Shalt Not?”

    Actually we only see corrosion of our fundamental freedoms as communist. You know, like arresting a guy for making a video (ever hear of the FIRST AMENDMENT?), suing a non-union company for ‘illegal’ importation of wood (which the selling country confirmed was LEGAL), forcing health insurance plans to cover stuff I dont want or need but now MUST PAY FOR OR BE FINED AND/OR GO TO JAIL, and many others…

    My wife and I watch this show and it is really funny. I’m seeing a lot of negative comments about the show but in reality this show is a conservative show and a liberal station. I’ve seen every episode and there is a lot of zingers against the left and Tim’s character spews conservative principles. We should be supporting this show. Seriously watch it and judge for yourself.

      Ditto what you said. I’m mostly a big fan of the show because it’s funny. How many other Hollywood comedies would lampoon the government like the episode when he battles city code enforcement over really stupid laws. If you watch the show and don’t find it funny that’s OK because people have different tastes, but it’s my second favorite show behind Once Upon a Time.

      I totally agree with you, this is on f my favorite shows on tv, also wasn’t Tim Allen on GBTV on an episode about conservative celebrities or something? this show doesn’t scream conservative but it’s closer than anything else on TV

      The fact that the show is reaching out to the conservative market makes me want to support it, even if the network is working against them. We get so few willing to, I think it’s important to support them. Otherwise no one else will try if they think there’s no market for it. We should make it the most popular show on TV!

      Besides I like Tim Allen. Don’t know much about his politics but he’s funny. I used to love Home Improvement.

    I’m not the least bit surprised by ABC’s decision. I am, however, very surprised that we are actually hearing about it. Thank you, Tim Allen, for getting the truth out about this kind of behavior from Disney and ABC.

      See I am torn on this issue. This is not a news program so it is technically their 1st amendment right to say what they will. HOWEVER… When taken as a whole (news and not) they exhibit a pattern and practice of bias programming that can arguably be considered propaganda. Thank God for the blaze, Drudge and others and a free internet which is finally shedding light on this evil alliance between the progressive movement and the media.

      The major networks have been exploiting their access to the public airwaves too long and need to be brought down a peg. The only way to do this however is to hit them where it hurts; their pocketbooks. They need to be fined when ever they act unethically and people need to write letters to advertisers on the news programs protesting their sponsorship of false data and bias reporting. Then petition congress to force a review of their FCC licenses with the threat of revoking their access to the public airwaves.

      That is the only way I can see this problem being solved peacefuly.

    I’d say, rather than some vast conspiracy to promote the liberal agenda, the network attempts to have shows that are funny/entertaining so that more people watch, the ratings go up, and they can charge out the ass for advertising, and the network makes money. This show of course will be neither funny nor entertaining.

    This just confirms what I’ve already suspected. I’m a fan of Family Guy and it occured to me recently and although the show makes fun of pretty much everything, it never touches Obama. The show has made fun of Reagan, Bush, and Both Clintons on multiple occasions. In fact I can only recall one Obama reference at all and it consisted of showing the Washington monument and then showing the Obama monument next to it. The Obama monument being twice as big and black.
