Glenn Beck’s Latest Endeavor Is…a Line of Jeans? Yup, and Get the Inspiring Details Here
Announcing 1791 Denim from 1791 Supply & Co. on Vimeo.
Glenn Beck is known for his large undertakings (i.e. events in Israel, launching his own TV network). And while many of his ardent fans are likely not surprised by much these days, there are probably a few who couldn’t have predicted Beck’s latest major announcement: a line of jeans.
Becks’s clothing line, 1791 Supply and Co., has just launched its most impressive endeavor yet — 100 percent made-in-America jeans straight from the loom that made the original Levi’s. From the cotton grown for the denim, to the designing process, to the final details, everything is done in the United States. In an age when factories are almost exclusively outsourced overseas, Beck explained on his radio show Monday all that went in to launching the line in just ten months.
Photo: 1791 Supply and Co.
He began by relating the incredible history of the factory, and why he chose it:
I went and I found the company that makes the original denim. It’s in North Carolina– it’s [called] Cone Denim. These are the people that made Levi’s. They made the original denim for the 501s right after they became‑‑ they were…gold miner jeans for a while. They were made in California in the late 1800s. Right before the turn of the century they started to take off, and Cone Denim, the oldest operating loom in the United States, still operating, made that denim. So I went to Cone and I said, “Can you still make the 501, you know, that quality denim?” They said, “Oh, yeah. You mean red selvage?” And I said, sure, I don’t even know what red selvage means…
So why get into the jean business? Beck said he was outraged last year when he saw the new Levi’s ad featuring protesters and revolutionaries (see it here). The iconic company even adopted the tag line the “uniform of progress.” Not a fan of boycotts, Beck said they would simply create an alternative, and let the consumer decide.
And it was no easy task, particularly considering the level of quality and detail he insisted upon.
For instance, many of the small, copper rivets on jeans are no longer created in the original style. They are mass-produced, making each final product identical. Not only were 1791′s made in the original manner, however, — making each pair of jeans unique — they actually have a tiny “1791″ printed on them.
Photo: 1791 Supply and Co.
Because of this attention to detail and strict adherence to history and quality, Beck acknowledged that jeans are more expensive than some of the mass-produced alternatives (you can get them at 1791.com for $129 a pair), but he thinks it’s worth it.
“It’s part of our whole business structure not to make things in other countries,” Tim Didonato, merchandise design manager for 1791 and a driving force behind the company, told TheBlaze. “If it can’t be made here, then we’re not making it. We want to give our customers quality. It’s not, ‘We’ll take any jean, let’s sew it up.’ We’re testing them, we’re washing them, making sure it can go through hell.”
Many other companies use foreign labor but still might sell their jeans for $300. 1791 employs Americans, pays them, and does everything it can to keep costs low for consumers.
For example, Didonato explained that 1791 merchandise is available exclusively online, allowing it to to keep the markup as low as possible. If the company sold first to retailers, the retailers would understandably need a profit of their own, and the price would be closer to $300.
“We’re not buying these things pre-made. We create the concept from beginning to end, from a swatch of fabric, going to our pattern maker, going over for weeks on where the pockets should be, where the stitches should be…,” he explained.
In addition to to a truly American-made product, LJ Herman — senior Director of e-commerce for 1791 — told TheBlaze there was also another challenge: “My challenge was, don’t go in to debt.”
“We had to do this in a way where we were not indebting ourselves to make this project a success, and I think that was one of the biggest challenges,” Herman, who handles more of the business components while Didonato takes care of the hands-on and technical aspects, explained.
When asked whether he thinks 1791 will change the clothing market, making “Made in America” the norm once more, Herman said it depends. But he pointed to the fallout from U.S. Olympic gear being made overseas as an example of a changing attitude and said could be positioned perfectly ahead of the market if a fundamental change in attitude happens.
Still, the “Made in America” mantra is so much more than a tag line. For Herman and the team at 1791, it’s about a way of business. It’s not about “owning” a catch phrase, but rather inspiring a trend focused on encouraging quality products made by American business.
Herman summed it up simply: “Glenn always talks about putting your money where your heart is.”
“If you’d like to help us build an American company, making American quality, go to 1791.com,” Beck explained in his monologue on Monday. “American jeans. Made by Americans. The way Americans like to wear jeans and for what Americans like to do– work hard.”
You can watch Beck’s introduction and and the entire story, below (where he explains that 1791′s ranch shirts include a “non-union made” label:
Beck also discussed the launch of 1791 Denim on his television program on TheBlazeTV:

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 6:06pmBoy Glenn, you are going to be attacked by all sides on this one. First, you have an Indian as an emblem, so that makes you a racist, according to the Bolsheviks. Second, you will upset the RHINOs who want a “global economy” where slaves make cloths in Haiti or Pakistan for $.10 per day AND you will upset the liberals because you’re employing Americans. You need to employ some 3rd world illiterate serf for “diversity’s sake”.

You have some Calvin Klein or Lucky Brand that cost $4 to make and turn around and sell them for $130. Oh well, there are a lot of sheeple who have more money than brains.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 6:38pmYes… this cost is more than I can afford, but not more than some can afford. Glenn is trying to fund his dream… and that is to bring us different forms of media that strive to bring relevant topics and as much truth as they can deliver. That is a worthy cause and it needs to be funded some way. Will this endeavor succeed and become the next Levi Strauss Co.? Time will tell… but in the mean time, he is employing Americans.. and is a good cause. All these naysayers that poo-poo his attempts to create a better America, should maybe first state how they have positively contributed 1/1000 as much as Glenn and his staff, to the betterment of this nation before the join in the bay of those often lazy and unproductive dogs that only look for weaknesses to exploit for their own pathetic gain.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 7:28pm$129 for Jeans…. Should be $40 – $50
$30 for T-Shirt…. Should be $10 – $15
You wonder why nothing is made here; these jeans cost almost 300% more than the 501s at JC Penney ($45). Even if you say that the 501s will not last as long, do you realy think that they will last 300% longer? Not likely. Even if they did; lets say the 501s last for 3 years, are you seriously saying that you would wear the same jeans for 9 years? Ya right…. And for that matter, t-shirts are $8 at Old Navy.

I hope the fact that he thinks the rest of us can pay $129.00 dollars for jeans in the midst of a recession is evidence to the rest of you.
Seriously, I wanted to buy jeans made in the USA last year, but couldn’t bring myself to spent $80 on Diamond Gussets. Get a grip, Glenn!

Last year GM built a new plant in China and they won’t even put the plant up for sale. The first thing Romney should do is sale the plant & apply the money to what us Americans are owed. Glen might buy it and make a U S auto. If he went union he can pick up the 90 or so union heads that are still there each day. I don’t know who is paying their salerys but they aren’t out there for their health.

By the way, people, check the price of Levi’s redline jeans. They’re comparable to these jeans and are so valuable they’re counterfeited. They stopped making them about 40 years ago, and they cost multiples of what these cost, no matter what condition they’re in.
These jeans will last for generations and their value will only go up.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 10:09pmOh and one more thing. In this economy I only buy clothing at thrift stores. Much of it has never been worn: still tagged. You can get a $30 pair of jeans for 8 bucks. May not last as long as Glenn’s jeans but, doing the math I get 15 pairs of jeans for the cost of one pair of Glenn’s. It’s never the seams that wear out for me on jeans but the movement areas – knees, thighs. I forgive Glenn but this was a bad move and sale right now during the election. Kinda discredits the whole “Capitalism” thing when you are attempting to peddle an overpriced product. A step back for the Beck world IMO. Hope it doesn’t hurt the election

Are you kidding??? These jeans should be re-named DENIM FOR THE ONE PERCENT. It is a slap in the face to struggling America to tout an over the top product such as this. I am surprised at your insensitivity. Our family has gotten to the point of buying clothes at thrift stores, and that’s with both of us working. Posted on October 16, 2012 at 3:40pmWow! What a flood of caterwauling on this topic! Folks, chill out.
No, I can’t afford $129 jeans either… or a $90 canvass work shirt for that matter. So what? There are folks who can, and they will (hopefully) buy these products. Those sales will support American people who are working to make high quality products, and the profits will help fund charitable services. That makes everyone involved in that process happy.
Then, if enough such people buy these products, and “1791 Supply Co.” steps up production, both supply-and-demand and economy-of-scale will take effect and the products will become more affordable, hopefully down to the under $40 range where I could justify buying a few for myself, which will make me happy.
All of that is the beauty and the miracle of laissez faire capitalism. People doing what they want to do, making what they want to make, buying what they want to buy, helping who they want to help, everyone is happy and no one is forced to do anything.
It has taken decades for “Progressives” and socialists to derail the engine of capitalism in this country. It is going to take a lot of time, money, hard work, and patience to get it back on track.
BTW, designer jeans like Jet and Goldsign go for $200+ online, and I doubt they are made from scratch in America, by Americans, or that much of that money goes to any charity. I also think these jeans represent a far more American fashion statement… Liberty, Capitalism, and Compassio

Posted on October 16, 2012 at 6:47pmACTUALLY these jeans are mid range priced …lower to mid range. Most of the kids (college etc) prefer jeans that are upwards of $300 and they will find ways to earn them.
The point about these jeans are 1) SALVAGED LOOM and TECHNIQUE that made JEANS great to begin with 2) MADE IN AMERICA (every last part of these jeans) 3) AMERICAN JOBS
I think that too many people are speaking such negative ‘speech’ over their own lives!! Right now they may seem about bit expensive, but hopefully not for always. Other people make similar but charge $300; Wranglers are not comparable to these, good jeans, but this is a special product.
HOW about being happy that the things that MADE AMERICA AMERICA can be brought back and
factories that have been dormant can “spin” again with activity!!! ??? !

For others, Your precious Detroit made vehicles are made from American steel, with mexican, chinese and european parts. Some of the steel is provided by Severstal, a Russian owned company whose owner has close ties to the old russian hierarchy. The union worker’s dues go to the communist labor union bosses to put people like Obama in office. Why not buy Toyota, Kia, Mazda, Hyundai etc, many of their models are made in the US in right to work states where the workers money does not go to support communists. They too are made from American steel with foreign parts. Americans are struggling with high gas, food and energy prices and are being thrifty buying cheaper goods to fill thier needs and still put food on the table. You can blame communist politicians, labor unions and the central banks printing of money to finance it all for the high prices of american goods. So keep calling your fellow Americans unpatiotic sheeple for shopping at Wal Mart or buying a Toyota. BTW I bought some new clothes baskets and hampers at Wal Mart this weekend, they were made by Sterilite, in the USA, one more thing to the purists, don’t buy gas as the oil comes from the middle east.

Let him sell his stuff, it gives you yet another venue to bring politics into another place they don’t belong. Do you wear **** shirts to accessorize the hemp skirts?

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 4:37pm$129 a pair? Really? Glenn, I can buy six pairs of the same Wranglers I have worn every day of my adult life for that much money. Come on, we don’t all have your disposable income.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 4:35pmOhhhh.. I’m bummed. I was thinking about telling my guys (I own a construction business) about these jeans and that they should buy them because they are made in America. Our slogan is “We do not hire illegal workers.” – Yes, it gets us business. But, there is no way I can ask them to pay $129 for one pair of jeans. We had to lay them off for most of the last three years and now they aren’t even getting paid what they used to be paid. I already pay for their work shirts, I can’t pay for their pants too.
On another note, those of us who live in “Middle America” don’t pay $300 for jeans. In fact, I think I would have to drive close to 100 miles to find a store that would attempt to charge that much. Now that I’m thinking about it, I think I would have to drive that far to find a pair for $129. – Don’t get me wrong, I would buy them if I could. I’m just not sure many people can buy them at the current price point.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 4:30pmMass production was the USA’s gift to the world, that’s what made her rich. Now hand stitched jeans for the rich and few are going to restore the economy? No way, sounds more like an Italian fashion house.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 4:30pmThis is one of the reasons if not the biggest reason why people do not buy “American Made” products. $129 each pair is steep, yeah, yeah there are others for more but that is not the issue. You can buy a good pair of jeans that stand the test of time for about $45. That is a ton of money less in these times that will sway people away from this whole made-in America stamp products.
I would like to buy everything that I have from American companies, but the reality is these companies need to lower their prices around and near their competitors. And yeah I get it the other companies undercut prices, blah blah blah, and if we buy American made products the costs of them will go down. Yeah okay I will await your Harvard degree in economics explaining this when the reality is, we as Americans cannot afford jeans for $129.00, regardless of the excuses.
I am sure I am going to get hit with I am anti-American tag or something else ridiculous but the facts still remain and I am not going to give my hard-earned money on a $129 pair of jeans just so I can act like I am Patriotic! Lower your freakin prices! Whatever this is just like the “American” car companies telling us their cars are made in America, yeah ok, whatever.

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 4:26pmif you have $12-20 tshirts I’d get one… like others have expressed about the cost, we’ve been living in this Obama economy for 4 years and it sucks, gas prices are killing me, yearly raise that doesnt keep up with the cost of living etc etc etc.
at least I can feed my family with deer that I hunt, at least that haven’t been made illegal yet.
there’s an idea for ya Glenn, team up with Uncle Ted Nugent and make hunting cloths and gear, trust me, your name and Nugents name? it’d sell, oh yes…. it’d sell

Posted on October 15, 2012 at 5:00pmOne of the knocks on US production is our cost is high because of unions. Well I am guessing Glenn isnt using union labor so that cannot be the reason he is selling the jeans for 129.

Granted, there are serious costs involved in a new start-up company, however, in this kind of economy with unemployment at 14% and climbing you would think that Glenn would make these garments affordable for everyone not just the people who are employed. At $129 they are out of reach for families who are struggling.
Come on Glenn, it’s not like you can’t afford to make these slacks affordable for the working class !
Good luck to Glenn but he needs to remember the hands that feed him.
