Souring on Candy? Both Campaigns Reportedly Voice Complaints About Moderator Candy Crowley Ahead of Tues Debate — See Why

It’s nearly impossible this presidential election season to find issues both campaigns agree on. But veteran politics reporter Mark Halperin may have found one: concern over Tuesday’s debate moderator.

According to Halperin, both campaigns have voiced complaints about CNN’s Candy Crowley and the way she perceives her role versus the role both candidates agreed she would take when officially signing on for the debate.

The issue revolves around how exactly Crowley will insert herself into the discussion. Because the debate is town hall style, the candidates expect the audience to ask the questions and drive the discussion. But as Halperin notes, Crowley has recently conveyed that she reserves the right to steer the discussion how she sees fit, even editing audience questions to a certain extent.

From Halperin’s TIME report:

While an early October memorandum of understanding between the Obama and Romney campaigns and the bipartisan commission sponsoring the debates suggests CNN’s Candy Crowley would play a limited role in the Tuesday-night session, Crowley, who is not a party to that agreement, has done a series of interviews on her network in which she has suggested she will assume a broader set of responsibilities. As Crowley put it last week, “Once the table is kind of set by the town-hall questioner, there is then time for me to say, ‘Hey, wait a second, what about X, Y, Z?’”

Both campaigns, Halperin says, aren’t happy with that and have confronted the Commission on Presidential Debates, which oversees the events:

In the view of both campaigns and the commission, those and other recent comments by Crowley conflict with the language the two campaigns agreed to, which delineates a more limited role for the moderator of the town-hall debate. The questioning of the two candidates is supposed to be driven by the audience members themselves — likely voters selected by the Gallup Organization. Crowley’s assignment differs from those of the three other debate moderators, who in the more standard format are supposed to lead the questioning and follow up when appropriate. The town-hall debate is planned for Tuesday at 9 p.m. E.T. at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

After Crowley made her “x, y, z” remarks to Suzanne Malveaux on October 5, the two campaign counsels, Bob Bauer for President Obama and Ben Ginsberg of the Romney campaign, jointly reached out to the Commission to express concern that the moderator’s comments seemed in direct conflict with the terms of their agreement. The Commission sent back word that they would discuss the matter with Crowley and reconfirm her function. It is not known if such a conversation has taken place, however.

The Commission, both campaigns and CNN declined to comment for the record. Crowley referred all questions about the debate format to the Commission.

Halperin does note that just because the candidates agreed to the format and Crowley’s role it doesn’t appear that she did.

“So, is there room there to come back to a presidential candidate and say, well, your vice presidential candidate said this?” Crowley told Wolf Blitzer last week. “I’m always kind of looking for the next question…. So there’s opportunity for follow-up to kind of get them to drill down on the subjects that these folks want to learn about in the town hall.”

  If Romney has intelligent, sharp-minded researchers, advisors, they should be prepared for some very biased questioning. But if the group is on the ball, they will have figured out the one-sided questions that will be asked, and Romney should have those answers available. It’s very similar to a court case, you have 2 opposing lawyers throwing very penetrating questions at the defendant, but whichever lawyer did the best job preparing his client to handle “unexpected” questions, will win the jury. If Romney’s people did the job properly, he’ll win the debate — much of the decision lies with the people who prepared Romney. Will be very interesting to see who did the best research and preparation. If done properly, Romney should shine.

There are still a few people who think that the media is not biased, but in general they are morons and most other people seem to be able to figure out what they are looking at.   I sure hope the Der Fuhrer either melts down (in fact if O and Candy both melted down, that would be great) … the problem with the whole industry is that the people who succeed are so narcissistic they HAVE to insert themselves into the discussion, when their job is to make sure the participants follow the rules and then get out of the way so the VOTERS (remember them, Cindy? Candy or whatever your name is) are free to ask their questions.

In the debates between Obama and McCain, it was clear the moderators were bias and questions were geared to benefit Obama and attempt to be critical of Republican positions. We will watch and see what come forth. Candy is in a tough spot to please “her people” and attempt to appear fair and neutral.

A concern I have about this debate is it is a Town Hall type debate. Whenever Obie has particibated in a Town Hall anything, he has questions prepared and the people asking the questions are hand picked. When watching the debate, if Obie does not use the ahs and uhs, the question is prepared. If he answer it without hesitation, it is prepared. Either way, Obama will come back hard and strong on this and ot lie down like he did in the last debate. I expect personal attacks from Obie. Expect the 47% issue to pop up.

  The town-hall style is lame and boring because it is essentially a Q&A session, not a debate. It “favors,” Obum only in the sense that even someone with severe cognitive impairment like him can wear an earpiece and parrot out answers. If you have ever watched Obum’s performance during a town hall meeting, you will notice that he always gives initial inane replies like, “That is a good question,” or “I understand your concern,” before he actually gets to his two words/minute replies. It is painful to watch, and the only reason he gets away with such poor performance is because a) he controls the media and b) he is black. Every American who tuned in to the first debate got to witness firsthand that Obum was born stupid — some were actually surprised at his extreme ineptness. The powers that be will never, ever let that happen again. So all moderators henceforth will shield Obum, and Dim Apes 1&2 will continue to ooo ooo and eeee eeee the remainder of the campaign season.

  I was thinking the same thing. The excuses are all lined up just in case Obama doesn’t do well. I think Romney is smart enough to know he is walking in to a lions den. He is used to situations such as this, being a CEO of companies. When you enter a conference room with all sorts of personalities and conflicts you learn how to brainstorm ideas and use them for your advantage. I think he will do just fine no matter who the moderator is. This is who America needs. Obama does not have that experience and that is why he resorts to excuses.

They know they can hold their own against both their opponent AND the moderator. I would rather see a TRULY non-partisan moderator, but I doubt you could actually find one of those.   ETCHASKETCH we feel your hate, get a life! The only complaints you love are from you puppet leader. Control freaks that think only government knows how to run the world. They seems to all love Hitler destroy thought or throw them in prison. Less government and more freedom is the answer, get people back to work by removing most restrictions on businesses, drill in America and stop sending money to foreign countries to drill. When will you learn that the reason they have such policies is that is where their money is invested? When they point their fingers you will know why is because they know so much about corruption they are involved in with their buddies. Unfortunately you are a fail at that. It would be interesting to read your explanation for the lies told by this administration as well as the deceptions. Sure, she’s a journalist and has a left-leanig bias.
But, she’s one of the best interviewers out there and her Sunday show is great.
