5 Things to Look Out for in Tonight’s Townhall-Style Debate Between Obama & Romney

(TheBlaze/AP) — Tonight’s face-off between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney holds high stakes for both candidates. While Romney is looking to seize upon — and continue — his current upward trajectory, Obama is seeking an opportunity to reverse negative press and perceived slumping in the weeks leading up to the election.

5 Things to Look for in Obama, Romneys Second Debate Tonight

Stand-ins for Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, left, and President Barack Obama, right, run through a rehearsal with moderator Candy Crowley, back to camera, ahead of Tuesday’s presidential debate, Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. Photo Credit: AP

Below, find the five things to watch out for when the candidates meet in their second debate:

1. A REBOUND? After taking a drubbing in the first debate, Obama’s under big pressure to step up his game Tuesday night. He’ll try to show energy and passion. And look for him to challenge Romney’s claims more often (although the townhall format isn’t always too friendly to negativity — so he’ll have to strike a balance). Obama’s generally comfortable taking audience questions at campaign events, and that should work in his favor at this debate.

2. MAN OF THE PEOPLE? The townhall format holds risk and opportunity for Romney. It could be a great chance to address one of the wealthy businessman’s trouble spots — poll respondents rate him as less likable than Obama and less in tune with regular folks. Romney could warm up his image if he connects well with the voters on stage and performs like he did during his first debate. What he needs to avoid: coming across as awkward or elitist (while this is something that would naturally hurt both candidates, after his 47 percent quip, this tends to be a sensitive area for Romney).

3. MORE CIVIL? Expect a less confrontational tone. As stated, the townhall format isn’t always friendly to contention. Although Democrats are urging Obama to go on the offensive, he needs to balance that against the restraints of the debate’s more personal and less official atmosphere. The two candidates will try to sound civil — even while underscoring their differences — to show respect for the folks surrounding them onstage. Being too aggressive wouldn’t benefit either candidate.

4. THE PEOPLE SPEAK: What will the voters ask? Usually not the kinds of questions posed by journalists moderating more traditional debates. The “real people” tend to frame questions in broader terms and are less likely to focus on the latest charges and countercharges. Sometimes they come up with something out of left field; that’s the moment to see how candidates think on their feet.

5. MORE THAN WORDS: They won’t be moored to a lectern or table, so this is the time to check out each man’s body language. Does a candidate seem relaxed and natural or ill at ease? Does he show empathy for the questioner by stepping in close and making eye contact? Is he attentive while the other guy is talking, or does he grimace and move around distractingly or – even worse – check his watch?

All this talk of what Romney should ask Barry and how he must make this point and that point.

What seems be forgotten is that this debate is under the control of a left leaning polling company, to select the questions, then an admitted leftist moderator and a group of voters, that after 12 months of campaigning, have no idea who to vote for.
Shades of that pony tailed questioner of past debates that wanted to know what the POTUS could do for him. Will the undecided (and uninformed) demand what Mitt will do about their free stuff?
This is the basis that is to drive tonight’s debate. A spinners delight.

Romney will be lucky to get his allotted time to answer, he wont get any shots at the messiah.
Watch to see who gets to answer unfettered and who gets reminders from the moderator if he tries to expose his opponents lies.

That’s how I see it going to. Remember when the 2008 election debate was held and Obama lost his debate with McCain ? O and his team claimed that McCain had been fed the questions before the debate. That is how this bunch of cry baby liberals have reacted to everything about their boy since. No wonder Obama is not under real stress. He never had to be before or now. His team does it all for him. The media claims him the victor no matter how badly he does. We the people see it and know better but unfortunately, there are millions that don’t watch or don’t think for themselves. If some movie character that they admire say’s the moon is made of green cheese and you need to purchase it today they buy it .

Agree with your reply WatchDogMom. The 47% only includes people on Welfare or collecting Food Stamps & free cell phone service with phone. It does not include people on Social Security who have paid into it all their working lives. I abhor the fact that through Obamacare we will have to pay for these deadbeats & illegals who will never PAY THE PENALTY. This penalty will fall upon the working Middle Class and to Seniors who have paid into the system all their lives.

I firmly believe that Romney is much more intelligent than Obama, but what has to be foremost in preparation for this debate is preparation. Have Romney’s advisors/researches/writers done the proper research to come up with sharp, memorable answers to the basic questions that should be expected? If Romney has head the expected questions and comments that Obama will ask, and Romney has gotten good input from his team, he should do well.
There’s no doubt the moderator will be biased, but with proper preparation, Romney should be able to handle the biased questions.

No doubt the deck is stacked. Anybody who believes these are undecideds, that Crowley won’t cherry pick the questions that will challenge or embarass Romney, is dreaming. As for the free stuff, well, de Toqueville said it 200 years ago–

The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money

Congress and Presidents discovered that about 75 years ago.
      I gots my Obamaphone!!

But Romney will do well enough if he avoids answers like “well, my mechanic says…” or “hard to get good help nowadays.” Obama will schmooze with the audience and be so much better than last time (how couldn’t he be??!!) the MSM will trumpet he won.

Obama and explain by telling the people “sometimes you just don’t say things the way you wanted, like when the President said “You didn’t build that” I’m sure the President in hind-sight prefered he had choosen different words”. After everything Obama says, Romney just needs to come back with, “You speak as if you have not been president the past four years. If that is such a big problem, why haven’t you done anything about it? Why is everything worse than the way you found it?”
Hit him with Libya (Ask him exactly who told him it was because of a video), hit him with the REAL unemployment numbers, and hit him with every unfulfilled promise (there are plenty).

How in the world could I keep my seat
All of a sudden I began to change
I was on the debate floor acting strange

    3. Audience support @ ‘key’ moments for Obama

The interesting elements here are Gallup and Crowley. Crowley is obviously on the left and is almost guaranteed to bring up a womens issue to trip up Romney, but does have a better reputation than most lefty journalists, especially at CNN about posing hard hitting questions in interviews to those on both sides of the aisle. But Gallup – potentially being sued by the DOJ??? They have already skewed their polling parameters in Obama’s favor (right after the DNC miraculously when the Gallup polls improved markedly for Obama), with Gallup picking the audience and the debate being in NY it would not be shocking if there were very Obama friendly, Romney attacking questioners and questions planted. It will also be interesting to see if CNN/Crowley continue their real journalism of the Libya debacle and coverup and make sure there is a question regarding this serious and timely issue.

Honestly, I am getting sick of all of this kind of talk. You would think that competence doesn’t matter and all that matters is how you come across, how well you speak, etc. This is how Obama was elected in the first place. Voters need to look at the policies and the positions and not how great of an actor someone is. The country is in deep trouble and all we hear is how the candidates have to woo the idiot undecideds. If they are undecided by now maybe they are not smart enought to vote and we should be telling them to stay home. Sorry, if this offends anyone but I am just as angry at the ignorant voters as I am at the Obama people.

Regarding #4: I don’t believe the questions will be from “real people”. The moderator has been the one to choose the questions. Does anybody believe that the media is suddenly going to put Obama on the spot in front of millions of people 2 weeks before the election?

Obama will be favored and Romney will need to be prepared for all the obvious things that will likely be put out there.
Romney has no need to be president. He is not in it for the power or the money. I believe he is a good person and truly wants to fix this country.
My feelings toward Obama are about as negative as you can possibly get. I fear for the country if the ignorant voters go to the polls and vote him in again. Have you noticed how there are no yard signs or bumper stickers this election? People live in fear. He has divided the country. I would not put a bumper sticker on my car for fear of damage to the car. Since our mailwoman was wearing an Obama tshirt I would be afraid what would happen to my mail if I had a Romney sign. People are afraid they will be seen as racist if they say they don’t say they like the President. If the survey asks whether they like his bone-headed policies, they will most likely get a far different response.

This is nothing but a farce….it is trying to be something it no longer is.

The questions are pre -screened by the moderator. No follow-up questions allowed from the audience. (The moderator is not allowed to ask follow-ups either but apparently she disagrees with that part of the agreement and will ask follow-ups.

If someone asks a question other than the one they submitted their microphone will be cut off by the moderator.

This is nothing more than a smoke and mirrors hollywood production attempting toconvince us that it is real.

I agree that the “managed questions” are a farce. I’d like to see people allowed to ask questions that would really define the different positions of the candidates. Let some guy like Joe the Plumber ask whatever he feels like of the candidates. Make them sweat a bit.

The other thing not talked about is the fact that the audience is somehow supposed to still be undecided????

How is that possible at this point in this election season…especially with these two candidates?

I find it hard to believe that there are truly 80 undecided voters. These two are such polar opposites (at least in rhetoric) how can anyone be undecided at this point? I simply don’t think it is possible.

Guaran-effing-teed that Obama has the questions in advance, and Romney doesn’t. Pair that with Candy Crawley “moderating,” and it could be a disappointment. It’s a set-up, but I have confidence that Romney will still win the debate. Obama will still lie and stammer–uh, uh, um, um, I, I, I, me, me, me, while trying to remember his memorized lines.

I am going to look out for bath house barry’s lies. I will take a drink for each lie.

How long will I last? I’m guessing about 1/2 hour.
