AP Fact Check: Who Was Distorting the Facts on What?

Below is the fact check written and published by the Associated Press following Tuesday night’s presidential debate.

AP Fact Check on Tuesday Presidential Town Hall Debate

US President Barack Obama (R) and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney (L) participate in the second presidential debate, the only held in a townhall format, at the David Mack Center at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, October 16, 2012, moderated by CNN’s Candy Crowley. WASHINGTON (AP) — In the rough-and-tumble of a town hall-style debate, not all of the presidential candidates’ claims stood up to scrutiny Tuesday night.

Yet again, President Barack Obama claimed that ending the Afghanistan and Iraq wars makes money available to “rebuild America,” even though it doesn’t. And he pointed to a string of job creation while ignoring the job losses that came before it, on his watch.

Republican Mitt Romney actually corrected some of the errant claims he’s made before, while stretching the facts on the auto bailout he opposed.

A look at some of their claims:

OBAMA: “Let’s take the money that we’ve been spending on war over the last decade to rebuild America, roads, bridges, schools. We do those things, not only is your future going to be bright, but America’s future is going to be bright as well.”

THE FACTS: What Obama didn’t mention is that much of the money that has been paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was borrowed. In fact, the government borrows nearly 40 cents for every dollar it spends. Thus using money that had been earmarked for wars to build schools and infrastructure would involve even more borrowing, adding to the federal deficit.

ROMNEY: “I know he keeps saying, `You want to take Detroit bankrupt.’ Well, the president took Detroit bankrupt. You took General Motors bankrupt. You took Chrysler bankrupt. So when you say that I wanted to take the auto industry bankrupt, you actually did. And I think it’s important to know that that was a process that was necessary to get those companies back on their feet, so they could start hiring more people. That was precisely what I recommended and ultimately what happened.”

THE FACTS: What Romney recommended did not happen, and his proposed path probably would have forced General Motors and Chrysler out of business. He opposed using government money to bail out the automakers, instead favoring privately financed bankruptcy restructuring. But the automakers were bleeding cash and were poor credit risks. The banking system was in crisis. So private loans weren’t available. Without government aid, both companies probably would have gone under and their assets sold in pieces.

OBAMA: “And what I want to do is build on the 5 million jobs that we’ve created over the last 30 months in the private sector alone.”

THE FACTS: As he has done before, Obama is cherry-picking his numbers to make them sound better than they really are. He ignores the fact that public-sector job losses have dragged down overall job creation. Also, he chooses just to mention the past 30 months. That ignores job losses during his presidency up until that point. According to the Labor Department, about 4.5 million total jobs have been created over the past 30 months. But some 4.3 million jobs were lost during the earlier months of his administration. At this point, Obama is a net job creator, but only marginally.

ROMNEY: “The proof of whether a strategy is working or not is what the price is that you’re paying at the pump. If you’re paying less than you paid a year or two ago, why, then, the strategy is working. But you’re paying more. When the president took office, the price of gasoline here in Nassau County was about $1.86 a gallon. Now, it’s $4.00 a gallon. The price of electricity is up. If the president’s energy policies are working, you’re going to see the cost of energy come down.”

THE FACTS: Presidents have almost no effect on energy prices; most are set on financial exchanges around the world. When Obama took office, the world was in the grip of a financial crisis and crude prices – and gasoline prices along with them – had plummeted because world demand had collapsed. Crude oil prices have since risen even as U.S. oil production has soared in recent years because global demand is reaching new heights as the developing economies of Asia use more oil.

Other energy prices have fallen during Obama’s term. Electricity prices, when adjusted for inflation, are down, and homeowners are finding it much cheaper to heat their homes with natural gas. That’s because natural gas production has surged, reducing prices both for homeowners and for utilities that burn gas to generate electricity.

OBAMA: “What I’ve also said is, for (those earning) above $250,000, we can go back to the tax rates we had when Bill Clinton was president.”

THE FACTS: Not exactly. The Bush tax cuts set the top income rate at 35 percent. Under Obama’s proposal to raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000, the president would return the top rate to the 39.6 percent set during the Clinton administration. But he neglected to mention that his health care law includes a new 0.9 percent Medicare surcharge on households earning over that amount – and that tax would be retained. The health care law also imposes a 3.8 percent tax on investment income for high earners. So tax rates would be higher for the wealthiest Americans than they were under Clinton.

ROMNEY: “I’m going to bring rates down across the board for everybody, but I’m going to limit deductions and exemptions and credits, particularly for people at the high end, because I am not going to have people at the high end pay less than they’re paying now.”

THE FACTS: Romney is proposing to cut all income tax rates by 20 percent, eliminate the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax, maintain and expand tax breaks for investment income, and do it all without adding to the deficit or shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle class. He says he would pay for the tax cuts by reducing or eliminating tax deductions, exemptions and credits, but he can’t achieve all of his goals it under the budget rules presidents must follow.

The Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group, says in a study that the tax cuts proposed by Romney would reduce federal tax revenues by about $5 trillion over 10 years. The study concludes that there aren’t enough tax breaks for the wealthy to make up the lost revenue, so the proposal would either add to the deficit or shift more of the tax burden on to the middle class.

Romney’s campaign cites studies by conservative academics and think tanks that say Romney’s plan will spur economic growth, generating enough additional money to pay for the tax cuts without adding to the deficit or shifting the tax burden to the middle class. But Congress doesn’t recognize those kinds of economic projections when it estimates the budget impact of tax proposals.

ROMNEY: “A recent study has shown that people in the middle class will see $4,000 a year in higher taxes as a result of the spending and borrowing of this administration.”

THE FACTS: Romney’s claim is based on an analysis by the conservative American Enterprise Institute that examines the amount of debt that has accumulated on Obama’s watch and in a potential second term and computes how much it would cost to finance that debt through tax increases. Annual deficits under Obama have exceeded $1 trillion for each year of his term.

However, Obama is not responsible for all of the deficits that have occurred on his watch. Most of the federal budget – like Medicare, food stamps, Medicaid and Social Security – runs on autopilot, and no one in a leadership position in Washington has proposed deep cuts in those programs. And politicians in both parties voted two years ago the renew Bush-era tax cuts that have contributed to the deficit. Even under the strict spending cuts proposed by Romney, the debt would continue to rise, just not as fast.

Associated Press writers Tom Raum, Jonathan Fahey, Tom Krisher, Stephen Ohlemacher and Andrew Taylor contributed to this report.

FILIUSDRACUL – If you were to actually read the transcripts from President Obama’s Rose Garden talk the day after the Bengazi attacks you would indeed hear Obama mention that it was a terrorist attack. However, if you choose to keep your head in the sand and only listen to Glen Beck or other recent or former Fox “News” clowns you will indeed believe the propaganda that they want you to believe in order to fulfill their mission of trying to ruin this great country by promoting the lies of the republican party.

Here is the direct quote from Obama’s Rose Garden talk in which he did mention terror and not once mentioned the anti Muslim film:

“No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.”

@ Gold Coins and whatever, whatever….

President Obama was right once again you freaking idiot! Gas prices were low when he first took office because the global economy was on the brink of disaster and therefore global demand was low so gas prices were low in the USA as a result. This is FACT. This is an economic global consensus of FACT!

So if you want Romney to cause another economic meltdown that almost throws the US into a depression like Bush did, that will definitely lower gas prices. If you want to have the US in a great depression, vote for Romney and that will likely come to fruition…. IDIOT!!!!

Agreed, and Crowley admits it to. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/matthew-sheffield/2012/10/17/video-candy-crowley-admits-romney-was-correct-about-libya-attack
Obama made a generic statement that Acts of Terror will not be tolerated. The spin from the Whitehouse was that this was a Youtube video that insulted Islam and caused the spontaneous protests in Libya and Egypt. Instead, these were terrorist acts committed on 9/11 by potentially members of Al Quaeda.

So stop the nonsense of trying to parse a generic statement that does contain the word Terror but does not at all say, that these acts were terrorist acts as something it is not.

The clear message from the Whitehouse for 14 days was this was outrage at Islam being insulted and not an act of terrorism. They were afraid of what would happen if Americans heard that on 9/11 the United States was hit with a terrorist attack under Obama’s watch so they tried to spin it away.
Much like they’ve tried to spin away Fast and the Furious and how many “Green” job companies receiving millions and then going bankrupt? Where does all that money go that they are given, is it all accounted for? Every penny?

The People of United States will not tolerate acts of theft. Now, did I say that they were definitely acts of theft that occurred in these ill conceived Government investments or did I simply say that We the People won’t tolerate acts of theft. “I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.”

Obama directly linked the violence and deaths to “efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others”. I’m sorry, but that is directly referring to the video and saying the video caused the violence, not terrorism.

It is more than likely that obam’s handlers, Crowley included, gave their puppet all the questions and answers as soon as the questions were selected. It wasn’t enough to stack the decks of all 3 debates with 3 liberal moderators that were, incidentally, personal friends of obam and Biden. The only way obam won the 08 election was by playing dirty. The odds are significantly steeper this time… because in 08, obam’s big problem was a nearly non existent, tissue-thin resume… this time it’s a resume that includes the deliberate destruction of the business sector, economy, and middle class. This is not a resume that even the greatest of liars can successfully defend… it’s sure to be the dirtiest election ever to be witnessed.

@ Miami, who posted: “I would like to see Romney point out the FACT that GM has been outsourcing jobs since the Obama takeover. ”

GM, Chrysler AND Ford were “outsourcing jobs” a long time before that. All three of them have been doing virtually all their manufacturing in either Canada or Mexico for YEARS. Which is why it makes me laugh when people holler “buy American”–meaning these three companies. The truth is, Honda and Toyota BOTH have more manufacturing facilities in the US than the Big Three companies.

But it IS true that a lot of companies that supply parts, tires, etc. to the Big Three are located here–and what hurts the Big Three hurts them, and thus costs US jobs. The “new ” Globalism makes it VERY hard to know how to best benefit the country by supporting which companies. Suppliers of parts, raw materials, etc. and the manufacturers are so intertwined and located in so many different places that it is very hard to “buy American” and know that you are truly helping save American jobs, and not jobs in Canada, Mexico, or elsewhere.

So far in two debates, there have been two biased moderators. Candy Crowley’s performance was terrible, Mitt Romney showed his grit by hanging in there, standing up for himself and getting points across. What really told the truth was the group of independents who went 70% for Mitt after the debate. Most of those who voted for Obama in 2008 are going to Romney. When asked for words to describe Romney, most said “presidential”.

An article in another newsletter yesterday morning said that the media had already decided that Obama would be the winner, all he had to do was show up and make a few points. If he hadn’t had Candy propping him up and helping him, he would fallen apart. Conservatives’ and Republicans biggest challenge isn’t Obama, it’s the biased mainstream media.

Kryptonite, I agree. Obama’s Libya coverup attempt by using the “video” blame is a two-fold screwup!
First, we now know that our Foreign service people were watching the event realtime and have it videoed (watch for the video to disappear). There was not active “Video” protest going on at the time the attack took place! Yet, Obama and his flunkies saw fit to conveniently pin the blame on the “Video” in order to divert attention to the administrations own failures.

Secondly, while they broadcasted, promoted and featured the “Video” scapegoat agenda throughout the Arab world, they incited and fueled the riots in the other Arab countries to further give credence to their scheme. We are talking some evil SOBs here!!! This could have easily cost more American lives during these riots, probably led to the murder of the American Embassy Security Official in Yemen and will have lasting future reprecussions on our next President’s Foreign Policy capabilities!

I also noticed that Obama, during the debate and specifically on the question posed to him by the attendee asking Obama who was responsible for denying the additional security requested by both the onsite security advisor and the Ambassador himself! How convenient to ignore the FACT that Obama never answered the question!

This is far greater that the Nixon Watergate Scandal and Obama, Biden should be impeached and held in direlection of their duties to the Country and the American People!

From the minute minute I thought what Romney should have done was
confront Barry eye to eye and say:
“Mr President, you are responding here to every question with very eloquently
stated plans you say you have ——– the biggest difference between us that
everyone here needs to understand is that YOU’VE ALREADY been Pres for 4 years.

Technically it wasn’t a lie but it was a stretch. He did talk about a terrorist attack in the rose garden the day after 9/11/2012. However, he was referring to 9/11/2001, not 9/11/2012. I’m sure the liberal media will leave this important point out, though.

I guess the conservatives don’t want to get “Tecno-wanky” and explain this. Too complex? The real question is your plan working yet? The answer can only be,”,NO”. Ask what happen to socialist Europe ? Do we want that here ? Ask the poor ethnic or female unemployed ” Is it working yet for them? We have “progressive income tax” system…because it was created by PROGRESSIVES!! the American version of the Fabian Socialists!! SOCIALISTS!!! They are academic, political, and business ELITISTS!! that view the only path to utopia through their STATIST world view and think anything that restricts their ability to DICTATE policy to the uneducated slobs they think the rest of us are, as being in the way; like the Constitution, Declaration, faith and belief in Judeo-Christian values, the idea of a nuclear family made up of mom, dad, and children, personal responsiblity and independence of thought, actions, and word.
This is 1984..George Orwell warned us about this…it isn’t about R or D…it is about P/S(Progressive/Statism) or C/D (Constitution/Declaration). Kipling warned us about this…there are undying TRUTHS in the world that we must always return to if we are to survive…

and before any RP people jump up and down…it isn’t about RP either…he is part of the problem just like the rest of the bunch that has been in control since the mid 1960′s in both parties…with the exception of Kennedy and Reagan (both of whom cut taxes, understood about business and job creation, and understood about Peace through Strength (even if Kennedy found out on the job))..we have not had a true leader on all fronts -domestic and foreign- in 50 years

      The White House

      Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release September 12, 2012

Statement by the President on the Attack in Benghazi
I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.

I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.

On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya’s transition to democracy.

“THE FACTS: Presidents have almost no effect on energy prices; most are set on financial exchanges around the world. ”

BULLCARP! Of course the president has an impact on oil prices. When he creates chaos in the middle east, looks weak internationally, blocks a major pipeline and blocks drilling he ABSOLUTELY impacts oil prices. When he verbally attacks oil companies and throws regulations intended to block coal production the price of oil will rise.

Obama says use of foreign oil is down! Yes, the whole country is down, the economy is crawling and people can’t afford oil. Companies are using less energy and shutting down or cutting work forces.
So we are using less oil because we are grinding to a stop.

FACT: The CNN blob let Obama have the last word on each question the last half of the debate. That key bias also happened with the other blob last week. The minutes spoken are not as important as who has the last word regarding a given Q.

FACT: The CNN blob and Hussein ganged up on Romney on the Libya Q. Hussein kept crying out for the female to help him out against Romney. Effin SISSY.

The RNC had better demand that: 1) The debater who answers first has to cede the last comment on that Q to the other debater. 2) Moderators cannot take sides with either debater. The CNN blob should never get to moderate a debate again — EVER.
