Shock Video: Youth Football Coach Slaps Ref After Being Penalized

There’s not much that can be said her besides what you’re about to see is quite shocking. During a youth football game this weekend in Southern Florida, 43-year old West Park Saints, assistant coach Dion Robinson became infuriated after he was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He and his fellow coaches became so upset that eventually the head referee declared a forfeit.

So what did Robinson do after that? He chased down the ref who called the penalty and open-hand slapped him across the face, knocking the ref to the ground. And of course, it was all caught on video:

NBC in Miami identifies the referee as Andrew Keigans. It says that after flagging Robinson, the official did accidentally bump one of the young players, but there was no immediate indication that the subsequent scuffle had anything to do with that.

But on Tuesday, Robinson’s sister — Candy James — says that’s exactly what led to the altercation.

“He felt that he done it intentionally that’s why he went to him and said you owe him an apology for elbowing him and the referee said, I don’t owe anybody an apology. I’m not saying nothing,” she told WFOR-TV.

According to WFOR, Robinson has now been arrested and it was discovered that he has an extensive criminal past. That has raised questions about why he was coaching young kids in the first place.

“What happened is inexcusable,” Sheriff Al Lamberti told the station. ”He’s got an extensive record. It calls into question was a background check ever done on Mr. Robinson?”

The local league said that a background check is required for the coaches, but is trying to figure out if one was submitted for Robinson.

As for Robinson’s past, James defended him.

“Just because you have been to jail doesn’t mean you haven’t changed and trying to give back to the youth to make the youth not go where you have been,” she told the station.

As for the incident, it is in South Fl, I live here, I am shocked he only slapped the ref. Normal procedure in this “gangsta” Disney World would have been for the coach to pull out a nine mm and put a cap in the ref. The coach must have been feeling generous that day.

  ANd many in the crowd were ready to back him up. Notice how even the parents trying to protect the ref had to be careful how they interact with the mob? Hands up, waving generally, not specifically at anyone.
  
  If the ref did accidentally bump a player, in FULL pads, with a HELMET on, what the hell difference does it make? When I played in high school, I got bumped by refs, coaches, and other players. It’s what happens when the field is crowded and people are moving around. I didn’t see the bump.

  Judge a person by the CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER ! This man’s character is defined by his past and his present conduct. The Bible helps a little in identifying a person’s character as well.

  What does it say when a person’s life exhibits very few, if ANY, of the above characteristics?

  I am also a referee and it is sad but I am glad that local law enforcement is required to attend high school sporting events to protect the officials where I live. I have left arenas quite fearful of what the thugs might try to do. I officiate because I love the sport. I officiate with no bias and as fairly as possible. I get paid $55 / game. Is it worth it when these a-*h*o*les take a HIGH SCHOOL game so f’n seriously .. not sure. If I ever got hit like that .. the guy would pay .. I’d be in jail right next to him .. but I’d feel better.

These incidents happen for one very simple reason IMO. Our society has made sports our god. That is not to say that sports are not valuable to kids to learn lessons and a fine activity to watch, but it has become more than that.

The parents of these kids, especially those in the lower income communities see sports as the “way out” of their life. So any call that they don’t like, or may impact their escape leads to some argument and then potentially this.

I know Aretha sang R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but too many times that has become WAY more important then it needs to be. Ever accidentally bumped someone when walking in a crowd and been challenged that you don’t respect them? I have. What does an accident have to do with me disrespecting you? NOTHING. The same here.

2 Last Points:

1. If the official did bump the player by accident or on purpose, it wouldn’t have taken much to apologize, especially if it was on accident.

2. For the guy who ran on the field to DEMAND that, there is a rule to live by….before you start ANY argument, no the end game. What is you objective if you win the argument? There must be something to be gained in order to put yourself on the line like this.

At least other parents stepped into break up the altercation… Not saying this was a great outcome, but videos I’ve seen in the past led to an outright brawl…this did not.

Ok, I said to myself, before I opened the link, “more than likely, this coach will be a black coach.”
Sure enough, I opened the link and watched the video, only to find myself disappointed that it WAS a black guy. Not only that, but he hits the only white referee there. You can see a couple of black guys low-fiving. I hope the ref pressed charges and the league kicks this jackass out for life. Kids can’t play a good game without some hot-head punching someone. Almost s bad as muslims.

  I felt the same way. I’m hispanic and it pains me to see Hispanics acting the fool like this. Yet statistically, you’re going to be right in assuming something it’s a minority when something like this happens. I also saw the two guy low-fiving each other as if this was “cool”. I find it funny the sister defends him by saying this guy is a different person and is trying to keep kids from where he’s been. he actually took them right there with him. If he’s a different person now, I’d hate to have known him before. I understand this is her brother. I have brothers and dear friends who have done stupid things also. But I say, “I love them with all my heart but their actions are inexcusable.”
