Candy Crowley: Romney Was ‘Right in the Main’ on Benghazi, But ‘Picked the Wrong Word’ in Debate

TheBlaze’s Jason Howerton contributed to this report.

Candy Crowley Clarifies Why She Corrected Gov. Romney During Tuesday’s Debate

One of the big moments from Tuesday’s presidential debate between Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney occurred when moderator Candy Crowley of CNN injected herself into the discussion after Romney accused the president of refusing to refer to the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi as a terrorist act.

“I think (it’s) interesting the president just said something which — which is that on the day after the attack he went into the Rose Garden and said that this was an act of terror,” said Gov. Romney.

“That’s what I said,” the president responded.

“You said in the Rose Garden the day after the attack, it was an act of terror. It was not a spontaneous demonstration, is that what you’re saying?”

“Please proceed, governor.”

“I want to make sure we get that for the record because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.”

“Get the transcript.”

“It — it — it — he did in fact, sir,” Crowley said, offering the president what looked to be a little debate assistance.

“Can you say that a little louder, Candy?” the president asked confidently.

“He — he did call it an act of terror. It did as well take — it did as well take two weeks or so for the whole idea there being a riot out there about this tape to come out. You are correct about that,” Crowley said.

“This — the administration — the administration indicated this was a reaction to a video and was a spontaneous reaction,” Romney noted.

“It did,” Crowley agreed.

However, not long after the debate, Crowley explained during a CNN interview that Gov. Romney was “right in the main,” but that he used the wrong word:

“I heard the president’s speech at the time. I re-read a lot of stuff about Libya because I knew we’d probably get a Libya question,” Crowley told CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

“We knew that the president had said, ‘These acts of terrors won’t stand,’ or whatever the whole quote was. I think, actually, you know, because right after that, I did turn around and say [to Gov. Romney], ‘but you’re totally correct … they spent two weeks telling us this was about a tape and that there was this, you know, riot outside the Benghazi consulate, which there wasn’t.’ So [Gov. Romney] was right in the main. I just think he picked the wrong word.”

Here’s what Obama said the day after the Libya attack in the Rose Garden, according to the transcript:

Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks. We mourned with the families who were lost on that day. I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed. And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.

As Americans, let us never, ever forget that our freedom is only sustained because there are people who are willing to fight for it, to stand up for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it. Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe.

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.

But we also know that the lives these Americans led stand in stark contrast to those of their attackers. These four Americans stood up for freedom and human dignity. They should give every American great pride in the country that they served, and the hope that our flag represents to people around the globe who also yearn to live in freedom and with dignity.

So while Obama did say “acts of terror” in his first public statement on the attack, Romney is still correct when he says the president blamed a wholly insignificant YouTube video and non-existent protests for the attacks in Libya.

For example, when the president appeared on “The View” on September 25, days after his Rose Garden speech, he blamed the Benghazi assault on an anti-Muslim video.

Furthermore, when asked directly if it was terrorism, he said: “We are still doing an investigation. There’s no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn’t just a mob action. Now, we don’t have all the information yet, so we are still gathering it.”

Lastly, multiple Obama administration officials repeatedly blamed the deadly Libya attack on the video for more than a week, including U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

What a disgusting slob Candy Crowley is.

She had to butt in and she had it all wrong. She was just in a panic because her candidate was about to get crushed on Benghazi.

Later when someone asked about AK-47s – Candy didn’t let Romney talk abouyt the AK-47s Obama gave to mexican drug lords in order to kill American Border Agents

President Barack Hassein Obama told premeditated bold face lies and Crawley was his accomplice. There is no one, on this earth, who can prove to me that the President did not know each one of those questions before the debate. Crawley admitted that she personally choose the questions and obviously, in plenty of time to fill the President in. This guy is nothing without a prompter. It was there last night but in a different form. I put nothing deceptive and/or evil passed this man and his minions. By those standards Mitt Romney knocked it out of the park once again.

      Watch it again.
She cooly and calmly takes her time to uphold Obama’s misleading quote.
      She is not flustered.
Then when Romney tries to clarify–exactly as Crowly herself does AFTER the debate–
Crowly and Obama literally gang up on him to shut him up.

Look at Obama’s physical positioning and body language.
Listen to his tone with Crowly. He directs the whole scene.
Really, it’s worth a second look.

These people will do anything to win, anything.
Realize that all they really need is to tighten the polls a bit so that when–
surprise surprise– Obama wins, that can somehow be seen as vaguely possible.

This issue looks like the biggest cover-up of all time to me. It has all the markings of a political assassination. Someone, probably the ambassador there, had knowledge that was or could come to light and the administration wanted that problem fixed. Probably had something to do with that revolution in that country. So, arrange with the local terrorist group a fix and remove all the defenses to make it easy and dwla-la, problem solved. Now with the help of the media and it would appear Candy Crowley now in particular, the whole issue goes away. This was a planed event and we probably planed it. Now with a little self investigation over say the next year and a clean bill of health, it’s over. Watch it happen.

Exactly It proves just how bias the media is and that the bias is so enbedded that you can’t have a fair debate. But given last nights moderators blantant lie to cover for Obama I think y=they should remove the next moderator and replace him with Sean Hannity JUST TO BE FAIR.
Sense we can’t have an unbiase debate we should at least alternate in which direction the biases are directed.

You are hitting around what I will say directly: Crowley was in cahoots with obama in the debate and particularly on this issue. I don’t believe for one second she had these three little words(acts of terror) and the rose garden press conference in her mind that she could pull out of thin air should it present itself in the debate. And for her to interject herself in the debate to the favor of obama is something a high school debate moderator would not do. Like you said, she was too cool in the interaction to be legit.

      Bingo, GONZO!

First, Hussein does make an allusion to the video: “…The United States…respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the beliefs of others.”

Second, now that I have listened to the speech, I realize what Obama & Gang are claiming IS A RUSE. Listen again:

Obama talks about the 2001 attacks (in NY, D.C. and PA). Then he says, “No ACTS of terror (a plural reference) will ever shake the resolve of this great nation. Don’t you see?! It is the CONCLUDING SENTENCE to that paragraph. Hussein will only describe as “terror” the attacks that happened under Bush.

THEN he goes back to talking about the Benghazi attack by saying, “TODAY we mourn four MORE Americans” (emphasis added). Why include the word “more” if he was talking about the 2012 attack all along? Besides, only one attack occurred in Benghazi, and he uses a singular noun throughout the speech to refer to that attack. Initially he calls it “an outrageous and shocking attack. In closing he labels it a “terrible act,” (again singular forms).

In sum, Obama & Gang are re-interpreting their speech to fit their new narrative. Their claim is clearly contrived. Acts of terror was a reference to the 2001 attacks. LIARS.

Why do the Republicans go along with this debate crapola election after freakin’ election?! Why don’t we all just acknowledge that this debate moderation baloney CANNOT be done in an impartial way?! How about we just drop all pretenses and allow each side to choose a moderator from each side of the political spectrum and have a completely honest debate. They bring Chris Matthews to moderate, and we bring Charles Krauthammer, and each can ask questions of both candidates. The sooner we realize this cannot be done in an “impartial” way and we acknowledge our biases, the better! So from Martha, to Candy, and now freakin Bob Shieffer, it’s just too much!!! I can’t take the blatant shilling for Obama every single darn time (except for Jim Lehrer, which looks like to be the best moderator to date, and that’s because he didn’t really moderate). To make this fair, we should now insist we have a series of three debates now moderated by Rush, Sean, and Glenn.

Excellent comments here. I wonder if these MSM cheaters ever experience any remorse? Those who wanted to be ‘memorial news casters’. Not only did CROWLEY give Obama almost 10% more time but that LIE – then repeating it at the behest of that dope-in-the-White House really seems to have backfired on her/both Crowley and Obama.
Americans were paying attention. Romney was great, solid, strong, steady and real.

The questions could not have been more liberal!! Even the wording of the questions!! Assault weapons? Income inequality? But more than that! In every case, the tough questions went to Romney, the soft balls went to Obama and a blogger last night brought up a point (about early) on about a question Obama said was ‘not supposed to come to him’… DID HE KNOW about the Questions/questioners in advance?? Sure seemed like it.

I loved Romney’s pure authority. Crowley? ? I wonder if these MSM people have any idea how necessary HONESTY is? These liars and fact manipulators blow every opportunity to leave
a lasting reputation…they just become “some more MSM liars”

I take issue with AK-47′s being classified as “assault weapons”. I could be wrong; but I think most people assume when you are talking about assault weapons the implication is “machine gun”; meaning as long as you keep the trigger pulled, it will continue to fire until either you release the trigger, or run out of bullets.

The fact of the matter is that unless you have a special license (I believe it is a class III license); you cannot LEGALLY purchase a fully automatic AK-47 (i.e., machine gun). The only legal AK-47 available to the general public; who pass a back ground check, and do NOT have a class III license, is a semi-automatic AK-47. Meaning, you have to physically pull the trigger for each round of ammunition you want to fire.

Now, there are plenty of long guns (rifles), that are semi-automatic and just as deadly as any semi-automatic AK-47. So, this whole idea of re-instituting an assault weapons ban (AK-47′s, AR-15′s, etc) is utter hogwash and would NOT be affective in reducing violent crime. Any nut job who has violent intentions can obtain a semi-automatic weapon and be just as deadly; either by purchasing one from a dealer and passing a background check (easy to do if you have no felonies, demostic violence or drug convictions); or by out-right buying a weapon on the black market.

I am opposed to ANY gun control out side of enforcing existing laws.

Who picked these people, and did the Republicans get a more conservative moderator for the next debate? Romney has shown that he can handle himself in a dignified and presidential manner even when both the moderator and Obama are against him. JohnJamison, you made me chuckle pretty hard there. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and when that eye is well watered with alcohol, what we used to call skunk hunting ensues. I can remember plenty of tales of guys waking up and getting a look at their partner they picked up at the bar, and wondering how they could have lost all that beauty overnight. Lol. Thanks for the laugh.

So Candy was getting a little nervous that she could not pull off the blatant fact that she had probably rehearsed this moment with a focus group, if the not members of the White House itself?

Just long enough to avoid the real question, why was this a gun free zone? Just long enough to avoid the question, if the buck stops here, I resign question?

It’s too bad that the president got away with that question because no where in that statement in the rose garden does he call it an “act of terrorist”, he refers to a non-specific act of terror to our country but not specifically to benghazi, libya and it isn’t until you get down to the last paragraph. But he had to get in the part about respecting faiths, especially that of islam and the prophet mohammed especially in his speech at the u.N. But as far as christians not wanting to pay for abortions, whether it’s a religious hospital, university, school, etc. That’s ok to bash one’s religion there. Shame on you barack obama. Plus he out and out lied about the federal lands and oil drilling off shore and on shore, more than 63% of federal leases were denied, and drilling was down 14% so next time you fill up our automobile, truck or rv just remember obama lied. Crowley needs to look at the entire soundbite…by the time he spoke of “terrorist acts” against the U.S. he was no longer referring to Libya. Besides, how does that explain Susan Rice some days later on nationalTV, five stations, saying it was a spontaneous protest in response to this stupid video no one has seen…then the dictator himself at the UN saying the same thing????? Something is being hidden here……..WHAT IS IT??????? Crowley showed her bias for sure on that one!!!!

Why do Obamas media shills insist on doing this in a day and age when anyone can google the archive footage? Crowley injecting herself in this–wrongly–is another reason why this debate jazz is useless. So BO NOW says he called it an act of terror (and Crowley supports that claim)? Then why did he apologize all over the UN more than a WEEK LATER for the movie…and send Amb.Rice out on the Sunday talk shows to contradict him? This is outrageous, and Crowley should be off debate panels from here on.

Her inserting her lies on top of Obama’s, just serves to prove the media carries this loser. Crowley was a shill for Axlerod who she interviewed in September and he tried to use the same excuse.

    http://www.commentarymagazine.com/2012/09/30/no-obama-didnt-call-benghazi-act-of-terror-in-speech/

Now that the Obama administration’s initial narrative that the Benghazi assault was a spontaneous response to an anti-Islam film has collapsed, the new spin from the White House is that President Obama has actually called it a terrorist attack all along.

“Well, first of all, Candy, as you know, the President called it an act of terror the day after it happened,” David Axelrod told CNN’s Candy Crowley this morning, referring to a speech Obama made in the Rose Garden on Sept. 12.

Crowley must have “misremembered” obama’s speech – ‘These acts of terrors won’t stand,’ [crowley] is NOT the same as ‘no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve…’ [obama].

obama’s statement was purposefully obtuse and evasive. Crowley seeking to assist obama knew exactly what she was doing when she took the huge outside of her moderator box in favor of obama – when she was absolutely incorrect as to the point.

The Official White House Statement from the same day ….

    The White House

    Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release September 12, 2012

Statement by the President on the Attack in Benghazi
I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.

I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.

On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya’s transition to democracy.

His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.

The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

    DISGRACEFUL

The greater question is why is Candy Crowley INCORRECTLY attempting to correct Romney?

This was a blatant attempt to lessen the blow against obama AND send a clear message to Romney that Crowley was going to intervene on obama’s behalf.

Crowley is just another democrat. That is now two debates in a row where a democrat monitor has stepped over the line to assist biden or obama.
