One of the big moments from Tuesday’s presidential debate between Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney occurred when moderator Candy Crowley of CNN injected herself into the discussion after Romney accused the president of refusing to refer to the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi as a terrorist act.
“I think (it’s) interesting the president just said something which — which is that on the day after the attack he went into the Rose Garden and said that this was an act of terror,” said Gov. Romney.
“That’s what I said,” the president responded.
“You said in the Rose Garden the day after the attack, it was an act of terror. It was not a spontaneous demonstration, is that what you’re saying?”
“Please proceed, governor.”
“I want to make sure we get that for the record because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.”
“Get the transcript.”
“It — it — it — he did in fact, sir,” Crowley said, offering the president what looked to be a little debate assistance.
“Can you say that a little louder, Candy?” the president asked confidently.
“He — he did call it an act of terror. It did as well take — it did as well take two weeks or so for the whole idea there being a riot out there about this tape to come out. You are correct about that,” Crowley said.
“This — the administration — the administration indicated this was a reaction to a video and was a spontaneous reaction,” Romney noted.
“It did,” Crowley agreed.
However, not long after the debate, Crowley explained during a CNN interview that Gov. Romney was “right in the main,” but that he used the wrong word:
“I heard the president’s speech at the time. I re-read a lot of stuff about Libya because I knew we’d probably get a Libya question,” Crowley told CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
“We knew that the president had said, ‘These acts of terrors won’t stand,’ or whatever the whole quote was. I think, actually, you know, because right after that, I did turn around and say [to Gov. Romney], ‘but you’re totally correct … they spent two weeks telling us this was about a tape and that there was this, you know, riot outside the Benghazi consulate, which there wasn’t.’ So [Gov. Romney] was right in the main. I just think he picked the wrong word.”
Here’s what Obama said the day after the Libya attack in the Rose Garden, according to the transcript:
Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks. We mourned with the families who were lost on that day. I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed. And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.
As Americans, let us never, ever forget that our freedom is only sustained because there are people who are willing to fight for it, to stand up for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it. Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe.
No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.
But we also know that the lives these Americans led stand in stark contrast to those of their attackers. These four Americans stood up for freedom and human dignity. They should give every American great pride in the country that they served, and the hope that our flag represents to people around the globe who also yearn to live in freedom and with dignity.
So while Obama did say “acts of terror” in his first public statement on the attack, Romney is still correct when he says the president blamed a wholly insignificant YouTube video and non-existent protests for the attacks in Libya.
For example, when the president appeared on “The View” on September 25, days after his Rose Garden speech, he blamed the Benghazi assault on an anti-Muslim video.
Furthermore, when asked directly if it was terrorism, he said: “We are still doing an investigation. There’s no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn’t just a mob action. Now, we don’t have all the information yet, so we are still gathering it.”
Lastly, multiple Obama administration officials repeatedly blamed the deadly Libya attack on the video for more than a week, including U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 7:11amIt’s the GOP’s own fault. Why do they always agree to set their own trap? How does a minor anchorwoman from the lowest rated cable news outlet score the moderator position for one of 3 presidential debates while Fox News and Chris Wallace are sidelined? And how do they pick the Greater NYC area, in the shadow of the New York Times and network news? Undecideds applauding he moderator for stomping the GOP candidate? Get a clue Reunce Priebus and Co.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 6:57amCongratulations “moderator” Crowley. Using the issue that is hot on the minds of people all over the country (Benghazi) you have set in stone and leave no doubt what has been known for years – the media is totally in the tank for Obama. You saw “your” candidate Obama about to be roasted on the big Benghazi lie and you intervened. Realizing we uncouth smucks out here in fly-over country would have something to say about that you now try to walk your “intentional” mistake back – Moderator: Romney was ‘right in the main’ on Benghazi, but ‘picked the wrong word’. ( http://freebeacon.com/candy-crowley-he-was-right/ ) A dismal performance Crowley.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 3:51amOpinion Candy moderator unfairly gave Obama extra 10% time, help arguing against Romney, lying about facts, wording to redirect reframe questions against Romney, granting Obama rebut time but refusing it to Romney; After she point out SHE got applauses but it is not her place or job of a fair moderator; it is now clear why prior to the debate she refused to commit to not asking questions so she knowingly intended to interject her questions and bias into the debate therefore she a bias unbalanced bad reporter-moderator who misrepresented herself.

She also moved to Romney after his comment on bringing manufacturing back from China by stating to the president that we could not pay the wages they pay in manufacturing to be competitive, like he said, can we. She also tried to corner him on his AK-47 comments. Just to name a few.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 5:06amThis was a set up.
Think about it.
OBAMA himself brought up the issue of what was said in the Rose Garden.
Why take such a chance at the end of the debate?
It was bait. Of course he knew that Romney would jump to clarify what was really meant.
He knows that Romney is forceful and believable.
He would NEVER have taken the chance of bringing up the Rose Garden speech in such a dishonest way if he didn’t know Crowly was going to step in with her misleading confirmation.
At first I thought “she’s in the emotion of the moment, she goofed…”
But NO WAY! Too important of a question. She knew she would be before millions. She prepared for this question by studying all available info and issues surrounding it, including the President’s initial reaction to the attack– which is absolutely central. That very speech set the stage for the lies to come.
She knew all about Barack’s wording in the Rose Garden speech, and Barack knew he should bring it up and face off with Romney about it.
Crowley may be an idiot to be so biased, or to be working for such a biased network, but she is nonetheless a professional journalist who very certainly prepared for the most important night of her journalistic life.
Absolutely sickening.

You get lost in the details don’t ya. The administration was pushing the video angle from the beginning knowing that there was no protest in Benghazi. The President and administration officials called it a spontaneous action resulting from a video multiple times. They even made a video broadcast all over the middle east apologizing for this cartoonish video. Furthermore, you have no idea what this means, do you? They, the coordinators of this attack on our embassies and “safe house” in Benghazi, attacked US sovereign soil and we apologized to them. You truly don’t have an understanding of middle eastern culture. You have no clue just how dangerously incompetent Obama and co are.
It’s truly bizarre how you just deny self evident truth. No you didn’t hear the Prez blame a video for the murder of our ambassador along with 3 others.
Nope, these aren’t the droids your looking for…

Spot on! When that SOB called on Crowley to confirm his statement, you could hear the satisfaction in his voice.
The more I think about it, the more I am convinced this whole debate was a “premeditated attack” on Romney. Obum spoke without a teleprompter, yet for the first time in five years, he didn’t stutter and spoke less haltingly. That cannot be achieved in six days, not with so many potential Q’s. The audience was also visibly pro-Obama.
Early on, when Romney reminded Crowley it was his turn to rebut, she replied, “It doesn’t quite work like that.” Well, how exactly does it work, you sleazebag? If Romney insisted, Obum would bark at Crowley, as if to remind her of her duty to shut him up.
I utterly despise those media traitors working for the Commie. In WWII, French female traitors got their hair cut off, but now it is equal opportunity. That means they get the same treatment as men.

However, Romney did just fine. Obama showed up to fight. The numbers won’t really move much. They are right about where they have truly been for about 5 months. Romney in the lead with the popular vote and the electoral map. There are no true undecideds. If you are undecided at this point you’re too stupid to pick out a pair of pants to wear to work today.
Prediction: Romney by 5-7 in the popular vote and well over 300 electoral college votes. That’s where it has been for months.
