Controversial Geoengineering Experiment to Stop Global Warming Discovered Off Canadian Coast

Geoengineering — the manipulation of the environment as an effort to mitigate the effects of man-made global warming — is controversial among scientists as it could result in unintended consequences in the environment. For this reason, such experiments are often highly regulated and some are even thought of as “mad-scientist” ideas.

It was recently revealed that the one of the largest geoengineering experiments, which some are calling illegal, has been taking place off the coast of Canada. The Guardian, which investigated the story and reported on it Monday, said it is being called a “blatant violation” of a moratorium in place by the United Nations.

The Guardian reports that as seen in satellite images, a large amount of iron sulfate was dumped into the Pacific Ocean by Russ George, who is the former CEO of Planktos, Inc., as part of a project to spur a phytoplankton bloom. This bloom would create a carbon dioxide sink, which is a form of geoengineering called “ocean fertilization.”

The Guardian reports that in this satellite image from August 2012, the yellow and brown indicate high levels of chlorophyll from a phytoplankton bloom. (Image: Giovanni/Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center/NASA via The Guardian)

Here’s what the Californian man, who is reported to have tried to conduct similar experiments in the Galapagos and Canary Islands, had to say about the project, according to the Guardian:

George says his team of unidentified scientists has been monitoring the results of the biggest ever geoengineering experiment with equipment loaned from US agencies like NASA and the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration. He told the Guardian that it is the “most substantial ocean restoration project in history,” and has collected a “greater density and depth of scientific data than ever before”.

“We’ve gathered data targeting all the possible fears that have been raised [about ocean fertilisation],” George said. “And the news is good news, all around, for the planet.”

The Guardian states that the island village of Haida Gwaii agree to the experiment and put forward some of their own funds as well. Haida’s president Guujaaw is reported as saying he would not have done this if he had known it was a violation or that it could have negative consequences. Guujaaw says he was told the experiment could benefit the salmon population.

In a separate post Wednesday, The Guardian also states that the Canadian government has been accused of knowing about the experiment. John Disney, who is reported to be the president of the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation and a colleague of George’s, said in a radio interview that people within the Canadian Revenue Agency, the National Research Council and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Environment Canada were informed of the experiment. The Guardian itself claims to have seen correspondence that alludes to the Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation and Environment Canada meeting. It states that the government agency seems to have “expressed their misgiving about any ocean fertilisation going forward” but it doesn’t appear to have gone further than that.

“Canadian government people have been helping us,” George told The Guardian  “We’ve had workshops run where we’ve been taught how to use satellites resources by the Canadian space agency. [The government] is trying to ‘cost-share’ with us on certain aspects of the project. And we are expecting lots more support as we go forward.”

Environment Canada itself is not commenting as it conducts its own investigation.

Scientists are concerned over how long ocean fertilization would be able to sequester carbon dioxide. The Times Colonist reports climate scientist with the University of Victoria Andrew Weaver saying while there is evidence iron sulfate can cause algal blooms, there is no indication it would help a salmon population. Weaver also expressed concern over the potential for ocean acidification or that carbon dioxide could be released back into the atmosphere after being captured for a time.

Weaver mentions carbon credits, which is what The Guardian alleges George was after with this experiment, saying he won’t get revenue from credits as there is no evidence of this technique being a permanent carbon sink.

As for the U.N. moratorium on ocean fertilization experiments, The Guardian has George’s saying it does not apply to this project. But Kristina Gjerde with the International Union for Conservation of Nature told The Guardian that regardless of if the iron compound was dumped into the ocean for a geoengineering experiment or to help the fish population, it “should not take place, unless it is assessed and found to be legitimate scientific research without commercial motivation.”

The Haida Salmon Restoration Corporation, which describes itself as an “ocean stewardship and biotechnology company,” states that it believes an increase in phytoplankton will lead to a more salmon-friendly environment by restoring the health of the food chain. In its ocean news current events section, which includes news stories from other sources that help explain “our reason for being,” the organization includes some stories supporting research that found iron can initiate growth of phytoplankton that could act as a carbon sink to reduce ocean acidification.

I find this experiment pretty surprising. Monkeying with an ecosystem on this scale would generally require years of hearings and a stack of permits 10ft tall, if it were approved in the end at all. I’ve been in the international research community for decades and can hardly believe what I’m reading here in this article. If we tried something of this scale on land in the Arctic, heads would roll – folks would lose jobs, institutes would lose funding, and people might even go to jail. Unbelievable. Fortunately, the ocean is large and pretty capable of healing itself.

I have read many of the comments on this article, and I am disappointed at the near universal negative sentiments. Most people are unaware of the fact that the vast majority of the ocean is a desert, nearly devoid of life. Since plant life in the ocean is the mechanism most responsible for removing CO2 from the atmosphere, it is obvious that the only viable plan to mitigate CO2 is to take advantage of huge potential to increase this mechanism. Plankton is the base of the food chain in the ocean. A side benefit of removing CO2 from the atmosphere is Oxygenation of the ocean. This will promote growth in fish populations that are currently being depleted by overfishing. This makes learning how to fertilize the ocean safely vital even without the benefit of reduced CO2. Are we playing God when we fertilize our farms in order to increase food production? These small experiments in ocean fertilization are the only way to learn how to promote growth of beneficial Plankton, and minimize the harmful ones.

Based on your wording, I doubt you understand the mechanisms by which carbon dioxide and oxygen are transfered in water.

Have you ever seen a pond die off because there was too much vegetation? That’s right. Rotting vegetation releases carbon dioxide. It kills off the fish. The water doesn’t “oxygenate itself”, much like a fish tank does not. You must inject oxygen into a fish tank with an air pump, which simply mixes fresh air with the water.

Oceans will not “draw carbon dioxide into the water” magically, simpy by having more vegetation in the water. The vegetation in the water will convert the carbon dioxide that’s there (from fish and rotting animals/vegetation) into oxygen, but there’s no magical process that sucks carbon dioxide from the air.

Yes, the painful lack of understanding of basic scientific concepts is alarming. So many people have a passing familiarity with science. They combine that with a burning need to share their opinions. The combination gives rise to comment threads like this one.

Okay, after posting my last comment, I considered, “Well, I suppose algae could convert some CO2 from the air into O2 in the water. Algae floats in the top few inches of the sea, so maybe that’s plausible.”

But then I thought about the actual article above, and how all this algae was supposed to increase salmon population, presumably because the salmon will eat the algae? Well, if there are more salmon, they’ll consume more O2 and release more CO2, so the net effect will be – another stupid idea that wastes millions of dollars of tax-payer dollars, people’s time and a whole of energy just spinning in stupid circles.

      So…I guess we’ve got that…which is nice.

Must be careful with phytoplankton bloom. The bad news is, it grows explosively and sequesters CO2. The good news is, it can and will die off just as quickly and release badly needed CO2. Releasing CO2 is a good thing. Plants love it, cattle love plants, I love beef. Yea, sure, DO IT!

By tinkering with nature like this is how we ended up with genetically modified seeds. Sure we get a higher yield but know one knows the long term downside of that! To do this in a vast ocean is a slippery slope that always leads to unintended consequences! Simply stated if the corrupt UN has halted this then the consequences are 100 times worse than what they report!

Hon you may mean well but you are unfortunately clueless. There is a major difference in phytoplankton and algae. What they are producing is algae. Its the number one cause of shallow water anoxic events around the globe. Its also can be quite dangerous for humans.Further more the fish and other wildlife that die will provide nutrients which includes excess nitrogen. This also causes anoxic water conditions. It can have the same effect as excessive run off of land fertilizer. Its just a different source.

The liberals will go to any length to proof that our earth will soon be a ball of fire, so they must be able to tax anyone or anything that exhales some carbon.
That being almost everything, they will fight to the death to achieve this noble and very rewarding goal. Taxing puffs of air! Very profitable for the those collecting the tax.

I guess they missed the article a day or so ago, where it was stated that AGW ended 16 years ago. Not that such info would be any reason to give up their taxing goals.

I read a liberal theory about 2 years ago that they put aluminum oxide in the atmosphere in an attempt to “reflect” the sun’s rays back into space and therefore cool the earth. Problem is, it contaminated earth with aluminum when it fell from the sky.

Technically, if it was “aluminum-oxide”, it couldn’t contaminate the Earth, as it would be completely inert.

Anything that’s an “oxide” means it’s been combined with oxygen, in other words, it has rusted. Just like iron-oxide is literally rust. Once it’s been combined with oxygen, it would require a different chemical reaction to seperate the oxygen and allow the aluminum to bond with something else.

Mostly, the liberals in your story wasted tax-payer dollars. The net effect was simply wasted time, energy, and money.

Beyond that, the original aluminum had to originally come from the Earth, so I don’t understand how sprinkling back on the Earch from 3,600 ft could “contaminate” the Earth. It could have contaminated drinking water, or gotten into people’s lungs and contaminated people, but not the Earth. Again, the contamination would have been meaningless, unless something in the water (or human lung) to seperate the oxygen from the aluminum.

God, I wish Chemistry I and II were required courses in high school.

Your comments are flailingly obnoxious. If you stuck to one topic, maybe….maybe we could begin to take you seriously.

Oh, and “chem trails”? You mean condensation from hot exhaust hitting cold, dry air? Scary stuff, I know. This will be difficult for you to understand, with your gaping lack of understanding in basic science, but those are man-made clouds. Water vapor (one of the by-products of burning hydro-carbons) hitting freezing air will form tiny ice crystals. Those tiny ice crystals formed high up in the stratosphere will hang there like clouds, because that’s what they are. They form along a straight line, because that’s how the plane is flying.

Saying the words “heavy metals” doesn’t add validity to your argument.

Typically, PH is altered by the presence of positive or negative Hydrogen ions. These most typically come from salts (Sodium, Bromium, Flourine…). Please explain to me how Aluminum or Beryllium alter PH. I’m fascinated.

Back in teh Mesozoic (65 to 245 million years ago) the earth got pretty warm. It is speculated that the ice caps were gone. Didn’t exist at all. Completely melted. This warm period is the reason we have, today, coal and petroelum.

Point being, the earth warms and cools. Any attempt by man to try and control God or Mother Nature will only lead to disaster that man willnot be able to recover from. Typically, man will make an attempt to change something. Things will go wrong so they attempt to correct thing which makes things worse. Then they try to correct that and it gets worse still. Then they give up trying to fix things and in a time less than that spent trying to correct things, it fixes itself. Kinda like the Great Depression of the 30s.

Where’d everybody go, is it something I said? Well, without knowing all the facts. Ok, see as how no one else seems to be paying attention to this story… First we introduce microbes on Mars, then we start seeding the atmosphere with smog that is blown across the ocean from Chine, the same smog that makes up 60% of California’s smog that you can see it hanging off the coast. When we dump that smog onto the Martian atmosphere, we start raising the Martian temperature which in turn melts the perma frost there. Many craters will start to flood and we use this plankton farming technique in those ponds and then we throw in some salmon and within a couple years, hell we start a fishing industry on Mars. We do a Noah’s Arc thingy to mars with endangered bear who then feed on the Martian trout. No seriously folks, I think I’m on to something here! NASA is tied up bowing to Islam. But we have many new civilian companies that are making rockets and space suites etc, and you know that there are no lefties on Mars because there is no welfare system yet. I think you are completely clueless and have no knowledge of science and how it works wow are you full of it and just an idiot crying the sky is falling the sky is falling we must do something.

Is this experiment any more dangerous than experiments at CERN that could potentially make a black hole? I would say much less & basically harmless.

I think the real kicker for the progressives is that a successful carbon sinking experiment gets rid of CO2 in the atmosphere … could get rid of global warming … gets rid their crisis & their ability to control people.

The likelihood we’ll ever create a black hole on Earth is close to 0%. The energy/mass required doesn’t exist on Earth. If it takes a super-massive star collapsing in on itself, that’s never going to happen on Earth. Not enough mass.

E=mc^2 says that you’d need the equivalent energy of the same amount of mass to do it with …. a magnetic field, for instance. Since we don’t have enough mass, we’ll never have enough energy. Pretty simple.

There was some talk about “microscopic” black holes potentially being produced by experiments but that they would evaporate in a short time (thru Hawking radiation?).

How big oif a consensus do we need before we do something. Just scientists? Just the scientists in favor?

The stars that become black holes are on the order of 20X the mass of Sol. Still if it is not theoretically possible, then why was it even brought up? I never saw a good explantion.

Creating an algae bloom is less threaterning in my book than something they might do at CERN.

Hello, they are geo-engineering the sky over your house on a weekly basis by spraying chemtrails. Open your eyes and you will see these long trails of vapor being sprayed that later fan out into thin clouds. These trails are comprised of barium and aluminum particles and are being used to geo-engineer the planet. Have you noticed we have very few clear blue sky days anymore? There is usually at least a thin film of clouds overhead, but they aren’t real clouds. they are man-made and YOU ARE PAYING FOR THIS!!!

Leftist think they can control everything. They believe they can control the oceans and the climate. They already control our lives.

Reckless beyond belief and arrogant to think man can change what mother nature does in a very grand scale this includes global warming what a joke.

These people should be in jail these people always lie to get what they want movies used to show the bug oil companies as the bad guy but I think now it should be the environmentalists are the bad guys and can’t be trusted to tell the truth the rolls have switched

Great – now they are setting the stage for a red bloom to occur in the northern oceans; the death toll of the sealife will be immense.

Yep. Just think of the cost impact for lobster alone. Guess us U.S. taxpayers will once again take it in the shorts so the POTUS and FLOTUS can still get their lobster dinners.

      @America:

Red sea blooms are of an algae that occures in iron rich waters, as have been seen repeatedly off the coast of South Korea and many other ocean bordered nations. These blooms drain oxygen from the waters they inhabit and result in a massve kill off of life, both by oxygen deprevation and the toxins injested by marine life that feed upon them.

Whenever environmentalists try to manipulate things, they make them worse. Spend the money on cleaning up physical trash instead. Maybe there is global warming because they were trying to fix the global cooling a few decades ago!

      Bingo!

The Left enacted laws for water saving toilets, fluorescent bulbs, and ethanol in your fuel, and what do you know? The toilets have to be flushed twice, you need twice as many lamps, and your car gets worse mileage. Tell me, what did we save?
