The New Normal: Food Stamp Enrollment Hits All-Time High

While most everyone else spent their Tuesday focusing on the second presidential debate, the Senate Budget Committee Republican staff under Ranking Member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) was busy putting out the following chart:

Sen. Sessions: Food Stamp Enrollment Reaches New Record High

Yes, you read that correctly: food stamp enrollment in July reached 46,681,833, up from June’s record-setting 46,670,301.

How do we manage to keep breaking these records? Well, it doesn’t help that the feds actively encourage enrollment in the program.

“USDA has engaged in an aggressive outreach and promotional campaign to boost food stamp enrollment,” the senator’s office notes.

Examples include the collaboration between the USDA and Mexican government officials to promote participation in Latin communities, teaching recruitment workers how to “overcome the word ‘No,’” and even handing out a “Hunger Champions” award in 2011 to certain workers for “counteracting” a community’s “mountain pride.”

We’re not making this up, folks.

“Total spending on food stamps is projected to reach nearly $800 billion over the next 10 years, with no fewer than 1 in 9 people on the program at any given time,” the senator’s office adds. “Neither food stamp participation nor spending on the program are ever projected to return to pre-recession levels at any point in the next 10 years.”

And if you think the number of people enrolled in the government assistance program is embarrassing, you’re not alone. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney agrees.

“How about food stamps?” the former governor asked. “When [Obama] took office, 32 million people were on food stamps. Today, 47 million people are on food stamps.”

“We don’t have to settle for what we’re going through,” he added.

But then again, who wants to talk about food stamps when there are binder jokes to be made?

    Humans have yet to figure out how to prevent socialism from slowly tearing them apart. They’ll figure it out when they learn how to tear a man’s sould from his body.

      Ahh sigh, I know your tryin to speak in general… But, I am 6’7 275 you can not guess my weight. BMI test do not work either. Ask anyone who has been in the military since they started it. Ask someone who works with athletes who do this testing to get a idea of what they can and can not cut. I am sick and tired of people saying because you weight 300 lbs your fat no. Sorry a lot of athletes and body builders can hit this weight and be in better shape then you can ever dream of. The military test is crap to they measure your neck, wrist, and waist to get your body mass. It is inaccurate no one is the same.

    Ever wonder where the people that no longer count in the unemployment numbers go when they are “no longer actively seeking employment”?
    A simple fix for the food stamp / welfare problem is simply to require that assistance be paid back at some point so others can be helped too.
    Yes, not all will be able to do so but when the kids are gone, or the house sells, or the annual tax refund is garnished, it should be paid back.

      I recall someone saying that the cost of energy would necessarily skyrocket it takes energy to produce everything yes even going to work will become non profitable. Even the recent COLA and foodstamps are being out paced by the rise in prices which any sane person should realize Obama has to go.

    There are way to many people on foodstamps that are in need of a real life lesson! It should be a last resort not the first! I have worked 2 jobs and raised 4 kids without any government help!(not wanted) When finances change your life style needs to change! I’m sure there are peolpe out there that will say that single parents have no chioce, I say bs everyone has a chioce and some of them find ways to cheat and suck us tax payers dry!! Time to cut everyone off and get yourself a job/jobs!! There are jobs out there and sometimes we have to take jobs that we don’t like, but thats life!!!

      Each year, multinational corporations based in the United States shelter $1.5 trillion in profits in other countries, and because the U.S. doesn’t tax offshore profits, that money is not subject to the corporate income tax. Corporate profits kept offshore don’t face American taxation until they are repatriated — that is, brought back to the United States. And people are complaining about, and reporting about, food stamp fraud?

      PROGRESSIVESLAYER. You’re not wrong. But are we ever going to be able to compete with almost slave labor? An example is Nike footware, where children are paid $1.60 a day. It costs approximately $2.00/day to eat there. They are expected to work about 500 hours of overtime a year. America will NEVER be able to compete with this. Ross Perot was right.

      This is not just contained to foodstamps we have even Veterans who are just looking for a free handout yes I said it even Veterans are looking for a free handout. Be honest Veterans are you claiming PTSD or receiving benefits for Agent Orange just for the free handout. BE HONEST !!!

    So Much Fraud. Fraud that has gone on since the early 70′s I know of. And so many ways to commit Fraud. From taking them and not needing them. From taking them and not feeding your kids and instead drink or do drugs with the money. Sell them to you local party store for 50 cents on a dollar. Maybe that will make you feel better so now two of you are committing Fraud. It goes on and on and no one does a thing about it.

      Hi Momrules,

      Lasted 9 working days. The owner was “Sheldon Cooper with ADD” on steroids.

      I just couldn’t do anything right and of course him being all of 30 years old with no social graces at all meant he was always right. Kept yelling at me all day and I wasn’t allowed to talk at all.

      He sent me home an day 10 (after yelling at me for the first 30 minutes) to “think” about what a bad person I was and to look for another job. Five days latter he e-mailed me wondering where I was.

      Needless to say I didn’t reply back.

      Hey Monk, Hang in there, I think this will be over soon, I have a small business, Machine shop, this is my worst year ever in 22 years, first time in my life we have had to drop health insurance, couldn’t pay the $800. a month, and because last year was all right, can’t even get medicare, not that I want that poison, finally got the kids on a discount plan for $180. month, but me and the misses go by the grace of God, if something happens it could finish us off. We have sold off everything we don’t need, cashed in a lot of our retirement funds, had a little silver 100ozs.or so I bought when Obama was elected because this guy reminded me so much of Carter and his sillyness, just turned that in a month ago, metal market did the same thing back then that it’s doing now, had a small spike before election, now it’s dropping, stock market is also going up, nothings for sure, but I say Romneys going to win, then the private sector money will come back to play, then hopefully this guy will just be a bad memory. God Bless

      The definition of an economic depression needs to change from ‘a sustained, long-term downturn in economic activity’ to something that reflects the pain the average American is forced to live with. Government needs to back off. The 47% need to be taught the truth of capitalism and the free enterprise system. This country needs Romney to win in November. And from there we need to restore this country.

      Part of the problem is that EBTs are suddenly fashionable! People are bragging about their EBTs…a guy called in to a talk show over a month ago to share his story of a lady who spent over $250 (she had to use multiple EBTs to pay the bill) on 2 bushels of crabs in Maryland. The owner told the guy it happens all the time! People have NO pride! It’s about about ME: give me my free phone(s), give me my free foodstamps (EBTs), pay my mortgage because I bought a house I can’t afford and it’s the governments fault. These people have no pride and no sense of responsibility!
