New Record Set for Military Drones Flying at Once

(Image: Lt Col Leslie Pratt/U.S. Air Force)
We’ve seen swarms of miniature drones flying at one time in coordinated efforts, but amping up the size of the unmanned aerial vehicles to those actually designed for weaponized warfare and the ability to fly many at once becomes more complicated. In fact, the U.S. Air Force just set a new record for the number of Predator and Reaper drones flown at the same time. In total, there were 10.
According to the Air Force’s Air Combat Command website, this new record for a non-combat drone swarm was set Oct. 2 by the 29th Attack Squadron, 9th Attack Squadron, and the 6th Reconnaissance Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.
“In the last year alone, the work the operations and maintenance RPA teams accomplish every day has grown by two-thirds, from six to 10 lines,” Col. Kenneth Johnson, 49th Operations Group commander, said according to the post written by Airman 1st Class Michael Shoemaker.

A line is described as the drone and all the crew required to maintain and operate the aircraft. Each of the 10 drones — four MQ-1 Predators and six MQ-9 Reapers — had their own crew.
With this new record, Johnson said, ”We finally have the physical capacity to accomplish our mission to increase programmed flight training and develop the best possible [remotely piloted aircraft] crew members.”
Capt. Andrew, whose last name is withheld for security reasons, is reported as saying with advances drone use “is only going to increase.”

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 9:54pmThis is interesting, referring to the June article on the COA’s regarding these drones, the placement of these drones appear to be pointing to areas of drug routes controlled by the 2 or 3 major Mexican drug cartels feeding the US.
I’m also guessing one of these drones slipped away and made its way to Israel by way of Hamas, tks to OB.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 8:03pmHope they don’t mind if we shoot at them, I doubt if they will fly low
enough to get a shot, but if they do, I’ll try. Isn’t it neat our own
goverment is getting ready to attack us, I wonder if they realise
that no taxpayers equals no revenue. Knowing washington they
haven’t thought about that.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 2:00pmDrones were created and designed for the sole purpose of defending our country. When Bush finally allowed them to be implemented, they proved to be invaluable for defense. Since he left office, Obama has taken a tool designed to protect our country and turned it on our own citizenry. You don’t need many drones in the air for what it does.
They are primarily eyes in the sky. Everything they see is sent to those in command. When you can be up to 20 miles up and send video as detailed as a sticker on a license plate over a ten mile area, that one plane isn’t what you should worry about. The response team is. Drones are targetted outside the U.S. for this reason. Yes, they have missiles now for use against targets being hunted for, but the information they obtain from observation is even more dangerous. Inside the states, they have no restrictions, which is why they were meant for military use.
Turning this technology against our own citizens is like having the military turn their arsenal against those they are supposed to protect. Are we supposed to feel safer in that decision?

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 9:55amExcessive rule of law under a tyrannical state is coming to skies near you in the immediate future. The next generation of Americans will never know freedom nor privacy, regarless of who is annointed through this next election. The best we can hope for is to kick the can down the road by disassembling the Obama bureaucracy and gain time while Romney assembles his own. We have a spineless Congress who is unwilling to stand up for the US Constitution.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 9:28amAh! An opportunity to place in usage a collective noun. Convention would make such an assemblage a ‘flight’, or perhaps a ‘swarm’. My suggestion is ‘dissimulation’, as in ‘a dissimulation of drones’ or perhaps ‘scold’. Maybe a ‘plague’ of drones?

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 9:58amHow do you think Iran got its drone technology? Remember when Obama bent over and begged to get back the lost drone foillowing the contrived OBL assasination myth instead of the drone it self destructing? The Iranians sent it to China for disassembly, analysis, and reproduction.
Could it be that drones are the locusts mentioned in the Book of Revelation? There will certainly be more of them in the skies than helecopters soon.
