New Romney Ad Targets Women: Abortion ‘Should Be an Option’ in Certain Cases

NEW YORK (TheBlaze/AP) — On the same day the second U.S. presidential debate was held, Mitt Romney’s campaign has released a new television ad suggesting the Republican hopeful believes abortion “should be an option” in certain cases.

The ad features a woman saying she’d heard Romney’s position on abortion and birth control “seemed a bit extreme.” She says she’d learned Romney doesn’t oppose contraception and believes abortion should be available in cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at stake. The Hill has more:

The campaign’s new TV spot features a woman, identified as Sarah Minto, who says she voted for President Obama in 2008.

“Those ads saying Mitt Romney would ban all abortions and contraception seemed a bit extreme, so I looked into it,” Minto tells the camera.

“Turns out Romney doesn’t oppose contraception at all,” she continues. “In fact, he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest or to save a mother’s life.”

The ad is an appeal to women voters, who polls show have widely favored President Barack Obama throughout the race. Surveys show the gap has narrowed.

Watch the ad, below:

Romney supported abortion rights as Massachusetts governor — but later had a change of heart. He now opposes the procedure, except in narrow instances.

The ad was set to air in Virginia, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Fellow citizens in Missiouri and Indiana, I am a member of the Tea Party and I am a Christian. I believe in limited fiscally responsible government. I also believe that what a woman does with her body and any pregnancy is her business and her business alone, and if, if, she is a woman of faith, that is a matter between her and God, and likewise none of my business. To the National Tea Party, to Candidate Aikens, and Murdoch, if you believe if it is God’s will, if you ever get raped, yes men can get raped, and you believe it is God’s will, then, if it be so, and you actually believe, this, do not defy God by having the genetic material removed from either your intestines or your stomach. And, by the way, do some research. Aids is real. Violent people who commit rape often have aids, which is transmitted by blood to blood transfer which can occur during rape. Now, I know you will not apply your beliefs to any votes if you are elected. But you need to make clear how ridiculous and arrogant that it would be to impose your beliefs on women. This is not your right. Now, citizens of Missouri and Indiana we face an economic 9-11, inflation has alread hit and it is accellerating. Hamburger:
    Jan 2009: $2.09
    Jul 2012: $3.45
    Oct 2012 $4.00

Gas and electricity are going through the roof. Missourians, Claire “Let MO pay for my private Jet and Obamacare” is burying you, the same will happen if the Indiana democrat is elected. Your financial security will be destroy

As a woman, I think and vote with my BRAIN, not my reproductive organs. While Mr. Romney may be wanting to appeal to the moderate woman voter I believe ads like this will put off the conservative woman base who want legalized abortion to have more limits and restrictions. It will be the conservatives who elect him, not the liberal feminists. A baby is still a baby regardless of it’s conception or disability and as a mother of four children I find it offensive that anyone would state that some babies have a right to life and others do not. As a president I would like Mr. Romney to vow to protect the least among us and most vulnerable INCLUDING the pre-born in the womb. Please follow Paul Ryan’s lead and lean to the right for the sake of our country and unborn children.

Christ, you one sided people annoy the hell out of me. It ain’t about abortion, immigration or anything else except foreign policy and economics. The rest if absolutely nothing. We got ragheads beating the doors down, communists in the damn white house and state department and women are worrying about abortions. Don’t get pregnant. Close your legs. Why anyone would want to bring a child in this comedy of errors now is beyond all comprehension.

Only an absolute lunatic would ban contraception and abortion. Not only would that person not get elected, but would be deemed an extremist. Both are an inevitability and will continue. Even if some religious crazy somehow got elected and banned contraception and abortion, both would still be widely available and people would continue to use them. Only this time, woman would be forced into “back ally” clinics, seriously risking their lives. More unwanted children would be born, parents would not care for them. The anti-abortion/contraception gang won’t be lining up to adopt these unwanted kids, just rambling on about how god will get them one day. Nicolae Ceaușescu, the Romanian soviet dictator banned abortion and contraception. Feel free to google that. It was a disaster. Keep your religious beliefs to yourselves. They don’t apply to anyone else. If god is going to get revenge on all of these awful people, then you have nothing to worry about or anything to say.

Even if we don’t like it, Roe v Wade legalized abortion. The ultimate decision is between a woman and God, who will be judged at the Last Judgement for what she’s done. Think about it.

Romney needs to stop stressing reproductive rights when it comes to women’s issues but instead talk about what they are really interested in, the Economy. He needs to talk about what he did as governor for women, like he did in the debate. Romney has done more for women than Obama has for equality and he answered that question perfectly. Here is the clip I am talking about: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/oct/romneys_strong_women.html

Though it is true many of us conservatives believe in an option only in cases of rape, incest, and safety of the mother, this needs not be a focus because this is not their greatest concern.

There is nothing new here. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that the Obama campaign has been lying about Romney’s stance on contraception and abortion, not to mention medicare, social security, tax breaks for the rich, etc.

    Obama is a liar!

I’m so tired of the argument that we have so many more “important” things to worry about besides abortion. Excuse me?!? Yes, the economy is of great concern, but that doesn’t mean we can’t discuss anything else. Abortion is the NUMBER ONE killer in this country right now. I’d say that’s pretty important.

@livilee…. Thank you for saying what needs to be said….Most people are not aware that since Roe V. Wade became law over 50 Million, that is 50,000,000, babies have been aborted. How many do you suppose were the result of rape or incest? How many of those actually saved the woman’s life? I’ll lay you odds its less than 1/10 of 1 percent… that would still be 500,000….People say we need a cure for cancer or alzheimer’s or some other disease… How do we know that one of those aborted babies would not have grown up to contribute to the cure of some disease or done something else to really benefit humanity? We’ll never know for sure and that may be the saddest indictment of all….

Now, listen, Romey and/or Ryan, or anyone else, get off the abortion issue! It just feeds the liberal media, so, JUST CONSIDER THE RIGHT of the woman who has the fetus in her womb. She decides!

Oh, for Pete’s sake! Us pro-lifers will conceed the 20 or so cases of rape/incest/life of the woman abortions if the pro-deathers will accept saving the lives of millions of innocent children whose lives are terminated due to none of the above; particularly survivors of botched abortions!

I have told this story before, but in this case it may bear repeating. I’m a Mormon, we are encouraged to have children, as many as we can care for. When I was expecting my fourth child, I became very ill. My stake president was my OB, and told me he could not oppose an abortion for me, but he could not do it and would refer me to another dr. I hadn’t asked for one , but drs were pretty worried for me. I left the hospital shortly after the conversation, knowing I was in for a tough time. We had a choice. When I received the paperwork, I read it out loud to my husband, we looked at each other and shook our heads, we couldn’t bear the thought of destroying our baby. We chose to trust God, and today she is a teacher with four children of her own,two are Marines. Point of this is to say, Romney, raised in the church as I was, knows sometimes a choice for the mother may need to be made, especially when other children need their Mom. He, and the church knows, and most of us know, it isn’t right to have children you cannot take care of. I took a chance that god would save me and my baby, but there are those with other diseases who can’t make the same choice. I grieve the loss of those babies, the Moms wanted them. I greive all lost babies who’s Moms didn’t want them.

That means people like you get taken from their beds at 2 in the morning and buried in a mass grave somewhere in the desert where the camels deficate. I despise people like you and if looks could kill, you would be deader than and HIV infected OWS’er minus his/her Valacyclovir. Really????? give me a break!

With the looming threat to our whole economy is this even an issue to worry about right now?

It’s kinda like finding your house is one fire, but you stop to defrost the fridge before dealing with the fire.

BTW what would happen if Roe v Wade was overturned???

Each state would then be free to decide for themselves if abortions would be allowd in their state! Wouldn’t that be terrible????

Imagine being able to be a citizen on the US and have to choice to live where your values are reflected, no matter which way you feel about the issue!

    Bit of a flip-flop?

“I do support the Republican platform, and I support that being part of the Republican platform and I’m pro-life.” – 2007, as a presidential candidate, in response the Personhood amendment plank of the GOP platform. Note: the Personhood amendment is still part of the GOP platform in 2012.

“I am pro-life and believe that abortion should be limited to only instances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.” -June

“My position has been clear throughout this campaign … I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.” -August 2012

I’m honestly not sure where Romney stands on the issue. He went from pro-life, to exceptions in some cases, to exceptions in more cases (for the “health” of the mother). I personally think he’ll continue doing what he’s been doing: telling independents he supports abortion in limited cases, and telling the GOP that he believes in Personhood of the unborn.

In the past, everybody was against abortion except in life of mother threatened, rape or incest. That was the idea I grew up with and was comfortable with it. Then I became mom and abortion never mentioned and I love my children. When my daughter was pregnant that was first time I saw an ultrasound…IT WAS A MINIATURE PERSON….That was alarming enough…then I looked into abortions and saw an industry dedicated to killing these miniature people. Then I discovered abortion was no longer an option in the 3 cases mentioned above…abortion was on demand for any reason…It was never considered when I was a child that mothers would one day march in the streets demanding right to kill their own babies…How can this be…Now besides abortion on demand this president supports sex selection, race selection, partial birth abortion, and putting babies aside when they survive abortion and letting them die slowly and alone. HELLO…what is happening here. America is becoming a blood thirsty bunch of murderers, not of other people, but their own babies. There is no justification for this slaughter of innocent babies. I hear Romney saying what was the normal reaction when women were compassionate and loving, when women welcomed babies even if unplanned and considered motherhood sacred and an honor. There will always be times that abortion is perhaps necessary, but that does not change the fact that a baby is being killed. This was once a hard decision….not now. God help us!

“I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970, as a US senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v Wade has been the law for 20 years, that we should sustain and support it. And I sustain and support that law, and the right of a woman to make that choice.”
    -Mitt Romney (October 25, 1994)

I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose, and I am devoted and dedicated to honoring my word in that regard.”

did you see in the debate how Romney says he will create 12 million jobs and 10 minutes later is saying “government doesnt create jobs”….Huh?

Romney plays both sides of every single issue.,.,
Taxes – one day he is talking about across the board, next day it is just middle class
Abortion – one day he says he wont consider it, next day he is pro-life
China – says we need to ‘get tough’ with China (tariffs) and then says he will expand free trade
Healthcare – he says government should not tell people what to do with healthcare and the next minute he is talking about keeping parts of Obamacare
