Posted on October 17, 2012 at 2:07pmYep, the problem is systemic, although fearless leader certainly isn’t helping. It’s everything together – progressives on both sides of the aisle, and of course the Fed is a huge part of the problem. They think we won’t notice if they tax the crap out of us through inflation. Ethanol that no one wants causing food prices to rise… It all has consequences.
…ah, but there’s no inflation. Everything is fine, everything is good. Just go to work, watch the half hour of the local evening news, and pretend like nothing’s wrong. We can only hope that this is starting to get people’s attention.

We also have a wood-burning stove that heats our entire modest home, and a whole-house solar battery backup for just the furnace, pumps (water) AND STOVE that will last for about 2 weeks without a charge, but it charges daily because we try to use it once a week to keep it going. IT IS AWESOME!
If we had to, we could live without utilities pretty well. Our whole-house alarm is also on the solar battery backup, just in case.
We have a motorcycle, in case gas is scarce, and bikes for warmer weather. I am retired, so we’re good to go.
We have a basement full of food stuffs that will last for years and enough drinking water to last for 5 years.
May I suggest that you start right now in obtaining some of these things or you will be sorry. I had a couple of IRAs that I cashed in to buy the major items, with money to spare and now I live off my 401k, cash, and bartering. BARTERING IS THE WAY TO GO, IF YOU CAN!

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:06pmThe reason gas is so expensive is because we do not have enough refinery plants. Obama has shut a lot of them down! If we had crude petroleum refinery plants, we’d have more than enough oil.
Obama does not like big oil and that is why he shut them down.
2010: http://www.examiner.com/article/breaking-obama-shuts-down-33-of-the-country-s-oil-refining-capacity
2012: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-02-23/angry-about-high-gas-prices-blame-shuttered-oil-refineries
Also, Obama has shut down power plants.
http://donnyferguson.blogspot.com/2012/09/obama-shuts-down-two-okla-power-plants.html
And several solar-powered plants, that YOU, THE TAXPAYER, paid for have been shut down:
http://www.nrsc.org/2012/07/another-taxpayer-funded-obama-berkley-solar-plant-shuts-down/
AND, SO, WE HAVE A PRESIDENT WHO HATES BIG BUSINESS, ALTOGETHER, INCLUDING OUR COUNTRY-RICH OIL AND COAL. This alone, is enough for me to vote for Romney.
OBAMA MUST GO.

There’s the crime. Inflation is based on the cost of goods AFTER gas and food are removed from the equation; the very things seniors spend money on !! I tell ya, it won’t be long before we start hearing about seniors eating dog food again. Especially if Romney gets elected

I have started buy one extra item when I go to the dollar store and once a month take it to a nearby group that has a household pantry for the seniors and those on limited income. I’ve been doing the same thing at the grocery store for the local rescue mission for some time. It will be a sad day when I can’t manage to stretch our budget to help others.

Hagen Daas lost 2 ounces and is no longer a pint. My hot dogs are 6 a package. Even my dog’s treats got smaller and there’s less in the package. A box of Fanny May candy at stores in Chicago is no longer a pound. That’s sneaky price increases. My husband wrote to the government CPI people about inflation and they told him, yes, but the price of furniture is up only 1.8%, Yep, they equated the price of peanut butter going up 40% to the cost of furniture. Obama did not shut down 1/3 of the US refineries. Nor did the EPA under Obama shut down 1/3 of our refineries. Why not go the the data source for any historical investigation of US refining capabilities. Here is the link to the reality of US refining:

The trucker pays more he has to charge more and the retailer has to pass on the cost to the consumer.
Sweet Old Baracks interferring with drilling effects us in different ways as many of our residents used to work on the offshore rigs and now are working in the Eagle Ford Shale field.
This is just one small part of the overall economy but it is repeated in various forms all over the country.

Posted on October 18, 2012 at 10:13amTo date I have only seen one article that makes this point………
Deficit spending IS INFLATION.
It makes no difference if the Gov’t borrows or prints the extra money it spends.
Either way it has exactly the same affect on the economy……..more dollars chasing the same goods.
The real problem though is that most people don’t even understand that inflation is destroying every item that own. During a strong economy they only see that value of their homes increase and think that is a good thing. WRONG……….when their home along with everyone else’s home increases they are actually seeing inflation which is the devaluing of the dollar.
It is not rocket science but I am still amazed that people don’t understand what inflation is and more importantly what causes it. Too many people say that they are not concerned abou the deficit. No worried about the national debt. They are too stupid to see that it not only hurts our children and grandchildren…………..it hurts us TODAY.

I heard romney say he would not reappoint bernanke, and would instead appoint a fed chairman that would concentrate on a sound rather than inflationary dollar. That would help a lot. I have also heard repub talk about a bill that would revise the fed mission to concentrate solely on keeping a stable dollar, which would be even better.
The cause of thses price rises is the fed inflating the money supply, to keep unemployment temporily lower, probably to get obama reelected, at the cost of present and future inflation.

Posted on October 22, 2012 at 2:51pmThe real culprit is the bernanke fed inflating the dollar to temporarily reduce unemployment, to help obamas reelection, at at the cost of present and future inflation. After the election both inflation and unemployment will rise dramatically, but at that point obama will be reelected, and will not have to run again, so why should he care. Bernanke is willing to do this because obama has already promissed to reappoint him, while romney has said he will not.

You know what I need or think the Federal Government owes me: A strong defenses (Army, Navy, AF, Marines, Coast Guard, CIA, FBI, Border Patrol, DEA,etc), policemen, firemen, a Surpeme Court, FDA (need the foods and drugs to be safe), infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc) and that is about it. I don’t need the government for anything else: health care, retirement savings, not jack. Get out of my way and leave me alone and let this country prosper and thrive. How often do you buy a house, stove, sofa, bed, recliner, etc?
Including items that you MIGHT buy every 5 years is used to keep the inflation rate DOWN. Just like not including people not employed by not looking for work keeps the unemployment rate down. Lies, damn lies and statistics…

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 1:01pmThey don’t include actual housing prices. They came up with a convoluted way that assumes you buy a house then rent it back to yourself. The CPI is as reliable as the BLS unemployment numbers. Congress “fixes” it about once per decade to keep it artificially low to control COLA costs of government programs. Had they continued using the CPI from the 1970s the country would have defaulted long ago from COLAs and Congressional salaries would probably be over $1 million per year. More lies without the sex and videotape. Oh, wait we are getting screwed aren’t we.

However, I find the 10 year comparison very illustrative of the result of the Federal Reserve debasing the dollar for a decade, as well as legislating we put a major food source (corn) in our gas tanks (ethanol). Why do American not acknowledge the simple economics…if we have 30% more dollars in circulation for the approximate same supply of goods, the price goes up 30%? That is the great debacle..

Besides that, the US is probably the large economy that is least reliant on exports/imports.
I’m not defending our current economic policies at all. We need to keep spending below 20% of GDP (at the most) and we would all be better off.

My point is simply that we can make a better conservative case if we show just how high the price of doing business has gotten since Obama took office. I’ve seen it at work and I’m sure you all have to. Some of us are lucky to work for major employers that don’t like to lay people off but they get it back somehow. Our medical has increased radically and when a person leaves, you can forget about hiring a replacement. We’ve been two people short for three years with no hope of getting them back. So the rest of us are forced to do more with less. It sucks but better than having to look for a job.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:19pm@skimmer57: If you do not like that, then don’t buy any. I happen to love QUALITY and I will be purchasing several pair in the next week or so.
What I really don’t care for are people who complain about high prices and people making lots of money and all I can think of is SUPPLY AND DEMAND. If there is not enough demand, Glenn will have to close his Jeans business down. If he does well, it is because people want quality and like his product(s). So, how can you possible NOT like that, UNLESS you are a liberal. Because, we all know that MOST liberals either don’t work, are on welfare, don’t have a brain in their head because they cannot think to make their own money or even get a decent job (they’d rather take it from someone else, who actually works for a living.). Liberals are a DISEASE that is ruining this country with all the entitlements they get. Now, I am all for taking care of the downtrodden, but when there is no accountability for those who receive freebies, then it becomes a burden on society, the rest of us.
So, I think you are jealous because you are NOT a pioneer in business, nor do you have any good ideas in your head. You just want to complain about others, never looking in the mirror at yourself. YOU SOUND LIKE A PROGRESSIVE.

What I would like to know is the total hit on the middle-class, has anybody come up with that number, The $4300.00 decline in pay, plus the added cost of fuel, food, health insurance, seemed like Romney was going in that direction in the debate when he was rattling off Obamas accomplishments, seems to me that would be one ugly number that would probably make a lot of middle-class people mad if they knew it.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 11:57am!% inflation my arse!!! The government and the Federal Reserve have to cook the books because if interest rates would correct to what they should be with inflation this high the interest on the national debt would consume every cent of federal revenue shutting down the government. Game over!!! Instead they are pumping money into the system which is the exact opposite of what every school of economic thought teaches. They are out of ideas! There is no way on earth they will be able to reverse course slowly enough to prevent an implosion. The collapse is coming, its just a matter of when and what will be the trigger.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 11:58amBut the government said there is no inflation. Why? Because they changed how they calculate it. Now they look at prices of 747 jumbo jets, cruise ships, tractors, and anything else that 99% of Americans don’t buy or use. They stopped calculating on everyday items because it didn’t fit their lying agenda.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 4:25pm@Sillyfresh, you are partially right about their calculations but not at the extent of what you think. Food is no longer being figured in when calculating inflation because food prices usually go up faster in price than any other commodity. When you take food out of the equation, inflation is kept down to a minimum and shows that our economy is not as bad as what people say. Add food back into that equation, inflation goes up and shows the economy is not doing so well. As for the consumer, we know that food prices have gone way up and know that the inflation rate is much higher than what they say it is.

Posted on October 18, 2012 at 2:06amThey stopped calculating cost of living on food and utilities. It’s not because they react too fast, it’s because if they did include that stuff, we’d be at 50% inflation. Just look at fast food and the $1 value menu that’s now the $1.79 value menu for example. The 2 biggest things in everybody’s lives, food and utilities, have been removed from their inflation calculation. Now they use the price of washing machines in place of food and price of lawn mowers in place of utilities. Figures can’t lie, but liars can figure.

Violent crime statistics under the Obama administration no longer include murder, homicide, etc. that were the result of a gun because bullets travel faster than knives, arrows, fists, etc and kill more people at one time than any other weapon. When you take guns out of the equation, the murder rate is kept down to a minimum and shows that violent crime is not as bad as what people say…

Food and Energy (electric, gas, etc) prices are NOT included in inflation numbers.
People who have run out of unemployment benefits, and are still not employed, are NOT counted in the unemployment numbers.
The National Debt, now at $16 Trillion, does NOT include unfunded liabilities like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security (In 2010 it was $104 Trillion).
Quantitative Easing I, II and now Infinitely $40 Billion a month printed and pumped into the markets to keep Wall Street afloat.

We have plenty of gas, but it’s not staying here. I wish Romney had mentioned this and asked Obama about it. Why don’t we keep our own resources and keep prices lower here in the U.S. and export the leftovers? Oh wait, I know, Obama cares more about the booming middle class in China and their ability to buy cars and pump them full of our plentiful, cheap gasoline and thinking he’s doing American a favor with high exports. Posted on October 17, 2012 at 12:09pmwhat some distributors have done is reduce the volume but keep the price the same, to keep that psychological advantage over the consumer.
Case in point, frozen package of gulf shrimp. 4yrs ago it was 16oz for $5 flat. 2yrs ish ago the weight was reduced to 14oz, and about a month or three ago it was further reduced to 12oz, all the while maintaining the $5 pricetag.
Extraordinarily high diesel prices sure as hell add to the prices too

Posted on October 18, 2012 at 8:56amYou are so right! These will be remembered as “the good old days”. Prices of all foods have been rising and with the drought this year beef and chicken will be much more expensive next year. Add to that the increased cost for fuel and you can be sure that the food you buy today will cost you much more next year and even more in 5 years. Instead of wasting money on stupid stuff or putting it in a savings account at .02% interest make a purchase at http://www.srmarketplace.com Most food has a 25 year shelf life WITHOUT refrigeration. It’s tasty and NOT some mushy beef stew or salty lasagna you may have tried while camping. They have recipes and show you how to cook with long term food storage ingredients. Highly recommended!

We need some additional informationg, but I will agree that these increases are far too high over a 10 year period. I also fully believe that our current President had done many damaging things in his basic policies that made prices increase… primarily when you consider his statement, “…energy prices will necessarily sky rocket…” Energy is used in all product, therefore he wanted them all to raise.
