AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott says he will defend high school cheerleaders who want to use Bible verses on banners at football games.
Abbott announced Wednesday that he is intervening in a lawsuit that cheerleaders at Kountze (KOONTZ) High School filed against the school district. The district told the cheerleaders to stop using Bible verses at football games after the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained.
The atheist group argued that using banners with phrases such as, “I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me,” violates the First Amendment rule against the government establishing a religion.
Abbott said that since the cheerleaders create the banners without school funding, they qualify as free speech and should not be banned.
A Hardin County judge will hold a hearing on Thursday.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 2:50pmHurrah! Keep on cheering! The freedom from religion folks just don’t get it. It’s Freedom OF Religion. And if your religion is one of non-belief, ok, you are wrong, but ok. If you truly do not believe, neither the spoken Word of God nor the writing of Scripture on banners will effect you. But apparently, on some level, atheists actually DO believe and are so scared of hearing or reading God’s Word that they want to force everyone else to live godless. You want the government and those around you to aid you in your non-belief by denying any mention or writing or depiction of any sort of religious faith.
Yes, atheists should be afraid. There is Power in God’s Spoken and Written Word – why else would you fear it and try to run and hide from it?

Oct. 17, 2012 at 2:33pmI’m with the atheists on this one. I don’t want a bunch of Muslim girl cheerleaders in Burkas praying on the field and waving “Death to America” signs either. We just keep religion out of it.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 8:08pmA) The sign refers to God giving them victory. B) How can you say that God cares about the players safety and ignore all the injuries in the sport. Sorry, there is no such thing as an invisible man running around a football field interfering with the game. That’s completely absurd and laughable.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 10:03pmA) Vicotory could mean many things. One being, victory in aquiring the courage and stregnth needed to compete against ones opponents. Two, vicotory in knowing one has put forth the best effort possible. Three, victory in acknowledging ones loyalty and obedience towards ones teachers, coaches and parents pays off. Four, victory in being able to freely and willingly give respect and honor to all those deserving such merit. Five, victory in being able to accomplish ones goals and other requisites neccesary to play the game. Six, victory in having learned to be a team player and good sportsman in order to apreciate the opportunity to play the game fairly and responsibly with others. Seven, victory in recognizing ones acheivement in the course of becoming qualified to play on that field. B) How can you say that God does not care about the player’s safety and ignore all the recoveries and improvements made by many players. How can you say that God does not care about the player’s safety and ignore all the people that rely on his Help and the hope people have in Him.
Sorry, there is no room for grown men spouting nonsense about a highschool football game and acting like little whiny, arrogant, incosiderate bully against an old sport considered tradition here in America. You’re completely what’s wrong with today’s culture. Get a life.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 1:35pmOk- so how the heck does cheerleaders, making banners on their own time with thier own money and displaying them at football games – somehow morph into a government establishment of religion??? Somewhere along the line these aethists were either abused as children, dropped on their heads, or had doting parents who thought their kid was perfect. They never learned “live and let live” and are about the thinnest skinned pukes alive.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 1:07pmThat’s nice that they get to keep Bible verses. The truth of the matter is that the [Truth] is so bright, so intense, so hot, hotter than sun, hotter than a nuclear weapon, so hot and bright that people don’t even want to think about it let alone even look at it. So they try to delete it.

I am a Christian from Texas and I say fight, fight, fight the godless.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 7:28pmIts good that some of the Christian people in Texas wants to fight the atheists and you have to fight but if you people dont get those giant Churches in Texas fighting instead of raiseing money you people are going to lose the battle.Iam talking about Churches that at one time was great Churches like John Hagees Conor Stone Church in San Antiono and T.D.Jakes Potters House in Dallas. These Pastors are going to have to refocus on Christ and quit dwelling on money
