(TheBlaze/AP) — Last night’s presidential debate was, perhaps, one of the most contentious displays of political back-and-forth in decades — if not ever. While President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney discussed topics like immigration and the economy, there’s one subject that didn’t come up — but one that is sure to be mentioned in the final debate: Israel.
As concern intensifies over Iran’s nuclear program and the rise of Islamist governments in the Middle East, America’s top ally in the region, Israel, has become increasingly wary. It’s a known fact that Israel’s security has been a U.S. foreign policy priority of both Democratic and Republican administrations since the Jewish state was created in 1948.

Although small in size and population, the Middle Eastern nation has significant influence in Washington, and presidents of both parties have pledged their commitment to its defense. And it’s always a potential flashpoint in a region that the U.S. depends on for oil.
—
Where the Candidates Stand:
President Barack Obama has continued the U.S. tradition of strong support for Israel — however there have been some major bumps along the road. While some officials in both American and Israel say bilateral security cooperation is as strong as it has ever been, others disagree. Israeli lawmaker Danny Danon, for one, recently said that Obama has “not been a friend of Israel.”
This isn’t an isolated incident, either. The Obama administration has become embroiled in several very public spats with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stirring criticism that Obama is not fully backing Israel. And — who can forget Obama’s claim that Israel should return to its 1967 borders (a statement he later amended).
Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney has been sharply critical of Obama’s policy on Israel. Romney is friendly with Netanyahu, visited Israel in July and has vowed unreserved U.S. support for Israel.
—
Why Israel Matters:
America has historically supported Israel as a bulwark of stability and democracy in the world’s most volatile region and shares culture and values with the Jewish state. Israel has also been the United States’ most consistent ally in the Middle East. Because many politically-active American Jews and evangelicals rank Israel at or near the top of issues likely to influence their vote, Israel and its security are usually major election-year topics.
Israel sees a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its existence and the last three American presidents have stepped up pressure on Iran, which has threatened to wipe Israel off the map, to prove that its nuclear program is peaceful.

An Israeli attack on Iran, backed by the United States or not, could lead to retaliation from Iran and its proxies against Israel and perhaps Western interests. It could also set events in motion spiking oil prices. An Iranian attack on Israel would almost certainly draw the United States into a bloody regional conflict.
Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama have all in turn tried to broker a two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which some believe would remove a main motivating factor for Islamist extremists who have targeted the U.S. and its interests abroad with terrorist attacks.
Romney, who has publicly wondered whether Palestinians truly want peace, has taken issue with Obama’s strategy in the peace process. He has criticized the administration for demanding that Israel freeze construction of Jewish housing on land that the Palestinians claim as part of their eventual state.
After initially rejecting such a step, Netanyahu announced a temporary freeze intended to bring the Palestinians back to the table. But the talks quickly broke down amid complaints the Palestinians weren’t serious about peace and Obama was putting too much pressure on Israel.

Oct. 19, 2012 at 11:05am@CHRISDIAMOND; I see that your name is all in caps & your highly intelectual long winded boring posts tells me that have a over inflated ego & you think you can dazzle us with your bull sh-t. You state that your a atheist which means you don’t believe in GOD, well thats ok he still believes in you. I hope you will appreciate the following joke;
An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.”
The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, “What would you want to talk about?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” said the atheist. “How about why there is no God, or no Heaven
or Hell, or no life after death?” as he smiled smugly…
“OK,” she said. “Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?”
The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.” To which the little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death, when you don’t know crap?” And then she went back to reading her book.

Unfortunately, I have no control over how my name appears while posting on the Blaze. Your name, and everyone else posting here’s name is all in caps as well. Do you presume this to tell us all something about you or me as people? I wouldn’t think so.
The joke was hilarious. I’ve read it before, but it still gives a chuckle.
Despite the obvious sarcasm, I’m pleased that you find my posts highly intellectual, though I’m not sure how that translates into an overinflated ego. I express my points as best I can, like anyone else. If I have greater skill in that endeavor than some others, then I credit erudition.
Unfortunately, I did not find any refutation of any of the points I made in your post to me, thus I must assume that either you have none, or you’re not as interested in refuting my points as you are making a joke or lobbing insults at me. That hardly contributes to the debate, wouldn’t you say?

Oct. 18, 2012 at 4:20pmAlmost everyone who is against Israel favors at least one of Israel’s enemies: PLO, Hamas, Hezbollah, Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda, etc. A government that is neutral or hostile to Israel will hire and promote those enemies of Israel, and the US is a country, like it or not, where 16% of the population consists of hard-core Jew-haters. If the US government excludes pro-Israel Americans from key positions and hires and promotes hard-core Jew-haters to key positions, it will inevitably be infiltrated by many supporters of terrorist organizations. The US could even become a terror-supporting nation. Hate crimes against Jews are already the #1 most common and #1 least investigated and prosecuted ethnic crimes in the United States. Merely not being Nazi or Fascist is too low a bar: we should change our anti-Israel policies before the United States becomes the largest country in world history to tolerate hate crimes against Jews and Israelis.

I’m glad you included “Almost” when describing people ‘against Isreal’ favoring one of their enemies. I do not favor any of Israel’s enemies, nor am I against Israel. I’dd contend that my stance is actually more pro-Israel than yours, if you insist our government meddle in Israeli affairs. I have great confidence in the military prowess of the IDF and Israeli Air Force. They haven’t one single rival in the middle east. Period.
Why must you insist that people who take my stance (that we shouldn’t be providing arms/money to ANY country, including Israel) are “Jew-Haters”? This is patently absurd.
Do you know what “hat crime” legislation did? It put people in certain groups under special consideration before the law. If a homosexual or minority is assaulted in this country, the ‘hate crime’ statutes make the punishment far more severe. But what happens if a homosexual attacks another homosexual? What happens if a black attacks a hispanic (for example)? Muslims get special privilege under hate crime legislation. What happened to equality before the law? Are you telling me that an American Jew’s rights are somehow more precious than yours are? They aren’t. He or she is a human being, just like us. We are entitled to equal protection under the law, but we do not get it.
Please learn how to form and express a cogent, rational thought.

Oct. 18, 2012 at 2:54amWell, it seems the DNC doesn’t want Israel, or G-d, in their platform. At the last minute they seem to reconsider, just in case there may be some there who believe in G-d, and the curse placed on those who curse Israel. It was half hearted at best. Why would this President promise to grant Jerusalem and the West Bank, as an area for a two state solution. It isn’t his to promise to anyone! Samaria and Judea, are central to the history of Israel, and religious historical sites. It’s already been stated that if the West Bank area is gained that all religious sites of Jews and Christians will be destroyed. This will not end well for anyone dividing this land, and that would include the govt. of Israel! Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, yet our President refuses to acknowledge that, or have our embassy moved to Jerusalem. Actions speak louder than words, and I can fully understand why Israel would be concerned if the current President retains power. As in we support a leader on one day, and the next demand they leave power.

And alas the Wilsonian neoconservative emerges! Yes, that’s right… progressive Woodrow Wilson declared that making the world safe for democracy was the responsibility of America. This deviates wildly from the founders’ positions on ‘entangling alliances’, but I suppose it doesn’t count when you’re talking about Israel. If it is a civic duty, then as citizens of America, you are free to move yourself to Israel (with Israeli permision of course), to enlist in their military, and put your support where your mouth is. You are not in the position to steal from me to support your beliefs. Also, it is immoral for you to use government (or allow the government to manipulate and use you) to commit the lives of American military volunteers to fight wars and die for Israel.
I absolutely condemn all administrations who have ever supplied weapons (at our expense) to ANY other foreign peoples, especially when they work so hard to remove our rights to own such weapons.
“Jew haters,” huh? I bet you hated when people accused you of racism for disagreeing with Obama, but here you are playing the race card against people who DARE question Israel. How’s that hypocrisy thing working out for ya?

Though you may be surprised, I post under my real name here, not some facade I create to hide behind. And becoming a politician would be diametrically opposed to my ‘political’ beliefs. So no thanks.
You are an American, but we would have to debate how much freedom Americans have. You said something crucial to the discussion: “I believe I have…” and you are completely entitled to your beliefs and the responsibilities you take on. This is why I mentioned in an original post on this same subject that people who feel as you do should consider gathering what funds you can, moving to Israel with permission from the Israeli government, and enlisting in their armed services. In this way, you can provide real, tangible support to what you believe should be supported.
Though you may not understand or agree with is this: you also believe you have the right (through government) to take from me to pay for things you support. You demonstrate this by backing American sponsorship of Israel through foreign aid and military protection. Our FEDGOV can only do this through taxation, or taking money from it’s citizens, whether they agree with the way the $ is spent, or not… much like I imagine you (and I) hate that we are funding the Muslim Brotherhood, and other Muslim nations, but we have no choice in it. They take the money, and tough if we don’t like how they spend it. If I take $10 out of your wallet and give it to the Red Cross, I am still a thief

An anarchocapitalist can also be called a free-market anarchist. What you have to realize is that anarchy doesn’t mean “No Rules.” It means “no rulers.” We adhere to the Non-Aggression principle, which states that the initiation of force or violence by a person or entity (like a government) is immoral, and that self-defense is the only moral application of force. We also believe in self-ownership coupled with total personal responsibility. In other words, if I wanna snort cocaine and drink until I am almost dead, I have every right to do so because this is my body… what I do NOT have the right to do is come to you or others and demand that you pay for my medical care as the result of my alcoholism, or other issues associated with my personal choices. The extent of liberty is only bridled by the Non-Aggression Principle, and recognition of each other person’s rights… we haven’t the right do something that infringes upon another’s ability to exercise their rights. We believe that the free market can legitimately provide all the services that a government ‘provides,’ but with greater quality, greater efficiency and less cost.
Have a look if you like:

Oct. 17, 2012 at 11:49amCan we please stop worrying about Israel? We need to distance ourselves from the Middle East. We need to become energy independent. I would love it if we get to the point where we import NO oil. Why can’t our politicians agree on a smart energy plan for America. We need to ignore the environmentalists and start drilling now. We need to tone down the EPA so we can build new refineries. We need to allow companies the freedom to research and develop renewable energy technologies so that one day they will replace oil and coal as our main source of energy one day.
Instead we have politicians arguing over an either or plan. Why can’t we have both? We shouldn’t be forcing one agenda over the other. We need both to become energy independent.
The day we become energy independent is the day that the Middle Eastern nations realize how screwed they are without us. That is when we will start to see real change over there. Or at least make it Russia and China’s problem.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 11:38amI have a proposition for the pro-Israel before America group:
If supporting Israel means that much to you, then please gather whatever funds you can, apply to move to Israel, and join their defense forces. This way, you and your ilk are not using the force of law through government to extract money from behind the barrel of a gun from people who believe as I do: that Israel is more than capable of defending itself.
This way you get to put your proverbial money where your mouth is, make a true showing of your support to your God, and back away from the immorality of theft committed against others to support what you believe without regard to what we believe. You might also get a hands-on view of what’s really going on over there. I imagine it would differ greatly from the narrative promulgated in the US through the influence of AIPAC on Washington DC, and Israeli influence in the media.
I have no problem with others supporting Israel if that’s what they want to do, but I have a big problem with people using that sentiment to have the government steal from me.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 11:03amAh, Ken… You sound like a regurgitation of the pro-Israel media and evangelical right. But let’s delve into your post here so you can help clairfy yourself:
“With Israel gone, the US would be Islams target in full force.”
So, Israel is a hedge preventing the full wrath of Islam coming against the US? And our continued support for Israel prevents us from being the sole target of Islam. You make it sound as though Israel is defending US, which is patently absurd. Instead, it is likely that our alliance with Israel does more to prevent peace with Muslim nations, as most Muslim nations hate our alliance/allegiance to Israel. And it’s not like Israel can’t take care of herself, what with 300 nuclear weapons, the quite formidable IDF and an Air Force without peer in the middle east. Plus, Jehovah made a promise to Israel, didn’t He? Is His promise not true without our support?
“Islam wants to take over the world and Israel is just a bump in the road to them.”
You obviously know little or nothing of Israeli military capability.
“Islam is a false religion, based on a false prophet and is the enemy of Christianity and Judaism.”
Why is Islam false, but Christianity isn’t? Can you quantify this double standard?
“Genesis 12:3 “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
God said, “Pray for the peace of my people.” Does ‘bless’ mean defend, fund and die for I

Ah, PhillyCornerBoy, you write with the style and knowledge level of a 3rd grader. Let me guess: you’re a product of the public school system, right?
I am an atheist, so I have as much belief in Islam as I do Judaism or Christianity: none. I am not pro-Islam, but it doesn’t surprise me that you would presume that as a response to my post, especially given the likelihood that, without weak attempts to insult, you cannot scribe any kind of legitimate and/or cogent refutation of the points I made or questions I asked. Additionally, I am a Rothbardian Anarchocapitalist, and we are ideologically about as far away from Marxism as you can get. I would bet dollars to donuts that you’re far more of a Marxist than I am.
Yes, Islam is insanity, as a religious belief, and as a statist philosophy. But so is Christianity and Judaism. Paul had the audacity to proclaim: “the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”
So according to Paul, the founders are in hell, and if you resist Obama, then that’s where you’re headed, too.
If you’ve read the Torah, then you know how Jehovah dealt with sinners, and how strict the law is. Have you ever been around a woman on her period? I sure hope you made a burnt offering as penance.
That people use religion to justify more insanity, and force me to fund it, is reprehensible.

Truly it gets a little weird when you stop and realize what surrounds you and just maybe you guys have our back maybe … but if not and you turn you back not to worry we are never alone.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 9:03amWell let’s not get carried away there pal. Lest we forget Jonathan Pollard or the USS Liberty. It’s not like Israel is in the “best bud” category ya know. I wish you all the best and yes, God is on your side so you have nothing to fear. That being said, we send you billions of dollars in aid and sell you as much hardware as you can buy. We poured every ounce of our resources blood of our sons in Europe to stop what was happening to your people in WWII. So if we don’t come and bleed on your shores I don’t think that is “turning our back on you”.

Pollard is one person and was an American, not Israeli. As for the Liberty, I don’t see how that’s an indictment of Israel. Israel wasn’t responsible for the Liberty being deployed in an active war zone nor were they the ones who called off the US forces deployed to assist the Liberty. Why were our planes recalled?

Oct. 17, 2012 at 11:04amAmerika needs to drop Israel like the cancer it is to the world body. The rest of the world is calling us jews, because of the wars our troops are fighting for it in the Middle East. I dont care that Iran wants nuclear energy, at least they have signed the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty, and have had nuclear inspectors of the IAEA all over their country. Israel hasnt, and has no leg to stand on when blathering on about Irans program.
Israel under the psychopath BiBi NutsandYahoo is trying to drag Amerika into WWIII. What part of that dont you folks understand. This guy is a serious nutjob, and the last thing we need to be doing is starting yet ANOTHER WAR FOR ISRAEL. We are broke. We have no more money for wars. we cant even pay the programs our seniors have paid into all of their lives.
I would rather see the whole middle east armed, and let them have at it. Maybe then there would finally be peace. Either they destroy each other and glass themselves, or they will finally work together because of MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction..
And to TZION Pollard is one of many spies for Israel, doesnt matter their so called nationality is they are still jews and Israel first. Our country is riddled with these dual loyalist traitors. Too many to count. Time to clean house and send all of these traitors to jail and execute them if found guilty of treason. Im still waiting for Pollard to be executed by an American First government. Not one owned by Isareal/AIPAC.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 8:05amIt is because of Jewish money and influence (in media, primarily), NOT because of the Jewish vote. The vote is too small to make any difference. But the media can rip a candidate to pieces and finish his career with little effort. And the largest contributor to both parties are Jewish groups. If special interest runs both parties, it is Israeli special interest groups. Banking/investment house money is just part of the financial arm of that inner circle of power and influence. Evangelicals are a small special interest group, as well. Elections are not absolutely decided by those groups, and besides, they almost always vote in opposition to each other, Jews for Dems, Evangelicals for Republicans.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 7:38amRemember what President George Washington said about this though:
———————————
“Excessive partiality for one foreign nation and excessive dislike of another cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of the favorite are liable to become suspected and odious, while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests.
The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible.”

Oct. 17, 2012 at 7:28amOh good grief. Israel can take care of Israel. They have Yaweh on their side. They’ll be fine. Borrowing money from China to pay to send our children to die on sand dunes has just about run its course.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 7:44amHow about ALLOWING them to BUY our F35 fighters? Or anything else they want to help defend themselves!
Or we can just wait until Tel Aviv disapears in a mushroom cloud before we stand up for them. Of course, after that happens, saying “never again” will sound pretty hollow!

If Tel Aviv, Haifa or any other city in Israel disappeared under a mushroom cloud, it would be evidence of a false flag attack by the Israeli government, as the Arab neighbors do not yhet have nuclear weapons. Pakistan might help a Muslim plot like that, but I believe it is just as likely that Israel would actually do something like a false flag to ‘justify’ a full-on nuclear assault of Muslim nations.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 12:04pmAhh…yes our best friend Israel. You mean the Israel that attacked the USS Liberty in 1967 to drag us in a war with Egypt?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident
What about Jonathan Pollard the spy who stole secrets from our government and gave them to Israel who then proceeded to sell OUR military technology to the Communist Chinese? Who, by the way, Netanyahu begs the government to release?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Pollard
What about the Israel that continues to persecute Palestinian Christians in Jerusalem?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf1z4oHygPo
You know I always point out the situation on the Jerusalem Christians. Do you consider yourself a Christian? Why would any secular person join a religion, whose member’s betray their fellow brothers in Christ? The fact that Christians don’t even care about their fellow Christians around the world and betray is proof positive why Americans shouldn’t trust Christians.

Haha instead of trying to argue or refute any of my arguments you just make a childish WWII reference. It’s 2012, if you think bullying people with false guilt is going to work, then you need to leave your bubble.
Tragedies that happened during WWII doesn’t justify persecuting Christians in Jerusalem, threats toward a sovereign country (Iran), shedding the blood of your bravest young, bankrupting our country (America is now #1 debtor nation in the world), and ruining our international standing, and fortunately thanks to the Internet, crimes are being exposed.

I have now had the complete and total displeasure of reading two of your insanely idiotic posts. You, presumably as a product of the American public education system, embody some of the very worst of those on the evangelical right who take the time and energy to log into websites and post comments. Everyone is now dumber if they read your posts. Congratulations, but I award you no points, and may the Flying Speghetti Monster have mercy on your soul.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 8:11amThat is just plain stupid and in fact racist. How does present day America owe anyone because of a historical wrong done to them, particularly in light of the fact that it was not America that perpetrated the act? You will have a lot of people emotionally programmed to agree with your comment and think that it is sound and reasonable. This is the sad state today, where few people are able to think with an independent mind or recognize unsound reasoning when they see it.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 8:57amMy grandpa had 5 campaign ribbons from Europe in WWII. We’ve sent billions of taxpayer dollars to them over the years. The United Nations (with funding from the US) gave them a country. At what point do we get to say we’ve done our part in your mind?

The UN didn’t “give” Israel anything. They passed a resolution allowing them to form their own country. That resolution, however, was rejected by the Arabs and therefore became effectively useless. Israel then had to fight a war against larger and more advanced armies than themselves in order to ensure they even got a country. Israel exists because they fought to exist, not because anyone gave them anything. They built their country.

Oct. 17, 2012 at 10:24ammyopicseer, sounds like a perfect name for you… You get the idiot of the day award for tossing out the ‘rascist’ card on something that has nothing to do with any race.
The simple fact is that the whole world had some pretty good idea that something very bad was happening to the jews in WWII and didn’t do anything to stop it. To know and not to act IS to act.
Now that the biggest enemy that the jews have is about to develope the ability to destroy them again, we have the obligation to live up to what we said way back then.
NEVER AGAIN!

“I can think of 6 million reasons why we (and the rest of the world) still owe Israel our support… Now and forever!”
Where is your outrage and unwaivering support for the Chinese? Mao only killed approximately 66 million of them (yea, that’s 11 times as many Jews killed by Hitler). What about your unwaivering devotion to the plight of Russian people? Stalin only killed roughly 20 million of them, or 3.33 times as many Jews as Hitler killed. The Holocaust was indeed an unbelievable travesty, but pales in comparison to the other atrocities I mentioned above. If your motiviation to ‘never forget’ is the number of people wrongly killed by maniacs, then I want to point out your basis and logical/moral inconsistency.
