We Talk to the Owner of the St. Louis Gas Station Set to Offer $1.83 Gas in Protest on Fri.
The day was January 20, 2009: Barack Obama was inaugurated President of the United States, the nation’s capital was overrun by millions of well-wishers eager to witness the historic event, and the average cost of all types of gasoline was $1.84 per gallon.
Today, Barack Obama is still president, many of those well-wishers are a lot less enthusiastic, and the average price of gas has risen to $3.90 per gallon.

Now, to be fair, the president does not control the price of gas. To say he is ultimately or solely responsible for increases/decreases in the cost of gas is incorrect. It wasn’t true when George W. Bush was president and it’s not true now. There are many factors that need to be considered when discussing price increases (such as the fluctuating cost of oil) and some of these are clearly outside of the president’s sphere of influence.
However — and this is where an argument can be made — by developing a robust energy plan and by encouraging exploration and investment in all types of energy, the president can offset said outside factors and help keep fuel prices low.
But rather than unleashing America’s energy potential, the Obama administration’s record on energy has been largely defined by multiple “green” energy failures and an almost inexplicable belligerence towards the oil and coal industries.
In other words, the president’s approach to energy has done nothing to offset the rising cost of gas.
And this is precisely why Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group dedicated to promoting the principles of economic freedom, is teaming up with the Alcorn Citgo & Food Mart in St. Louis on Friday to offer Missourians pre-Obama gas prices.
“It’s a pretty simple idea,” Patrick Werner, State Director for AFP’s Missouri chapter, told TheBlaze in a phone interview. “Four years ago, the president talked about high gas prices and the last four years they’ve risen. Where’s the energy policy? What the president has pursued, we think, is a failed policy and the best way to show that is to highlight what the price of gas was when he took office.”
From 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. this Friday, the Alcorn Citgo will sell gas for $1.83 per gallon to the first 150 vehicles (with each car being limited to 10 gallons).
How will the service station be able to afford this? Simple: AFP is picking up the tab. For them, the important thing is illustrating the failures of the president’s energy policies.
“We need a comprehensive energy policy and this [promotion] is just a away to showcase that the president’s policies aren’t working,” Werner added.
TheBlaze also spoke with Harold Alcorn, the manager of the service station, to ask him about the promotion.
“I’m 78 years of age,” the independent retailer told TheBlaze in a phone interview. “I have probably two-and-a-half employees. We are very small and we’re competing against all the larger companies in the St. Louis area. My being a part of this represents a small retailer trying to make it all work.”
Alcorn was excited for the AFP promotion and predicted a large turnout.
“I think it’ll be huge,” he said. “I anticipate a line of cars well in advance of the 8:00 a.m. starting time.”

Posted on October 18, 2012 at 2:13amWhy doesn’t the RNC or some PAC jump on this idea and go nation wide with it. Instead of putting money into those “negative TV ADDS that no one watches” blackholes. Spend some of that money on $1.84 per gallon pre-Obama priced gas. Make it the last weekend in October, let each town’s Republican campaign committee organize and promote it. Using a continuous loop TV explanation at the cash register. What a great way to get the message out. What great fun.

Posted on October 18, 2012 at 1:20amI would wait in line for 10 gallons of gas at $1.89. It’s $4.89 here. Plus it would be so nostalgic. Remind me of the ’70s. Gas lines. Good times, good times.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 4:08pmI love the idea but I would add a few more things to drive the point home. I would put up a television near the counter and I would have a clip of Steven Chu saying “Gas needs to be at the price level of Europe” with a caption that reads “Obama’s Energy Secretary” and “Europe price is $8 per gallon”… followed by clip of Obama saying, “Under my policies, energy prices will necessarily increase”. Show each clip for 5 seconds… then loop. Anyone standing in line will have to hear those two lines at least a dozen times while waiting to pay.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:26pmYour typical Obamazombie is oblivious to the fact that gas is made from oil, they simply don’t have the capacity to understand this. If the Marxist POS heathen were to allow drilling on federal land and exploit the 1.5 trillion barrels of shale oil here in the U.S and get it to market the price of oil and gas would fall.
Since Barry has a war on fossil fuels that won’t happen at least until we fire his skinny Marxist mulatto POS fraud heathen bastard born with a steely dan in his mouth rotten SOB @ss.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:34pmIt is not very often that I disagree with you; however, you are in error when you say the lazy POS ever-golfing but never working Kenyan Marxist jackass has a war on fossil fuels. He has no problem with every third world country in Central and South America drilling and selling their product all over the globe. He is only opposed to drilling that will benefit the USA. As a result, MY tax dollars flow to South and Central America to support their oil industries but the Sock Monkey won’t allow any drilling here. He is anti-American, not anti-oil.

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:12pmi like how obama and his FACT CHECKERS argue that the president cannot set the price of oil and gas, but then argues that SPECULATION IS DRIVING UP THE PRICE OF GAS… its patheticilly stupid… if the president is doing what he can to limit production on our own land and increase the costs of findiing oil and getting oil to our production facilities, increasing regulation, and threatening new taxes, at the same time they say they cannot affect the price of oil… but at the same time THERE IS A PARADOX OF THIS PREMISE…..
lets say the govt was not intervening in the drilling of oil, and the market decided HOW MUCH TO DRILL!! this means that the price per barrel could be dictated by how many barrels of oil get taken out of the ground, VS how low the price falls… when the price falls too far and it becomes unprofitable, no one will keep drilling for oil that they can only SELL FOR LESS THAN IT COSTS TO TAKE FROM THE GROUND, the price will bounce and rise, based on the conditions of the market.. when we allow MANY DIFFERENT COMPANIES TO COMPETE FOR THE SAME RESOURCES AND SELL ON THE MARKET, the PRICE WILL COME DOWN TO A LEVEL THAT SHOWS THE ABILITY OF AMERICA TO PRODUCE OUR OWN ENERGY… it will not be endless drilling in the wilderness like O zombies fearmonger… this is because the free market dictates that if you cannot get the product effectively, WITH OUT HANDOUTS, you dont… so the govt SHOULDENT be able to effect gas prices/ but does in todays USA

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 3:18pmi wanted to add….. that prices oscialte…. it is not going to be a steady price that gas will be at, but i think with what mitt is talking about 1.50$ gas would be cheep and 2.75 would be when times are tough… the RANGE THAT THE PRICES FLUCTUATE WILL BE LESS and we will be buying a product from people that work, employ and buy goods in the united states…

Gas prices necessarily increase (along with everything else) during economic expansion. If actual unemployment wasn’t +14% and my disposable income hadn’t vanished along with everyone else’s then $3-4 a gallon wouldn’t be so bad. That doesn’t make $4/gallon *good* but there is no reason–let me say that again–there is NO REASON AT ALL that the price of anything should be going up during an economic recession. That is one of the reasons recessions are necessary in a free market system: price stabilizing.
The price of gas can be offset simply by supporting AMERICAN energy (which BO refuses to do); by not flooding the American market with worthless paper currency rolling off the press with no economic growth to back it (which BO does like he’s gonna smoke it) and by getting the government out of people’s lives so they can find new and better ways of producing energy FOR THEMSELVES (a concept with BO is incapable of understanding).
