‘You’re Out of Your Mind!’: Romney Surrogate Sununu Clashes With CNN Anchor Over Defending Obama

Former New Hampshire governor and Romney surrogate John Sununu has clashed with CNN’s Soledad O’Brien in the past (remember when he told her to put a Obama bumper sticker on her forehead?), and Wednesday morning the two were at it again discussing last night’s presidential debate.

Specifically, the two discussed the September 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, and whether Mitt Romney missed an opportunity to explain the repeated contradictions in the administration’s response.

O’Brien begins by playing edited clips of the debate, in which Romney says it took the president two weeks to admit the attack was actually a “terrorist attack,” before moderator Candy Crowley intervenes to say the president did refer to an act of terror the next day in the Rose Garden. After applause for the president, Crowley also says Mitt Romney had the right “idea,” however, and that the administration did spend roughly two weeks claiming the incident was a spontaneous protest in response to a YouTube video.

After O’Brien concludes “that’s what happened,” Snunu objects.

“The fact is that in that Rose Garden speech, the president first [said] it was the video, and then two weeks later at the U.N. the president goes out and tells the world six times it’s the video. The president got caught lying last night, and I think the world should know that!”

After O’Brien plays a clip from the Rose Garden speech, proving that Obama did in fact say the word “terror,” Sununu responds:

“You left out the first part, and it’s the first part where he’s trying to tell the American public that it’s because somebody in the U.S. used their [First Amendment] right and made a video… that caused the problem.

“This is ridiculous that you’re trying to defend the president, who [five] days later sends out his Ambassador to the U.N. to five talk shows to say it’s the video. And two weeks later the president goes to the international stage and says ‘video’ six times! That’s ridiculous that you’re trying to defend him on this.”

When O’Brien attempts to place herself somewhat on Sununu’s “side,” saying Romney missed a real opportunity on Libya, Sununu remains unmoved:

“No, because what he did was put this in the conversation again. And now people understand that the president and his ambassador for the U.N., and Jay Carney, and all the apologists for this White House, and all the groupies on television that are trying to cover his butt have been lying about the president trying to deceive America that that tragedy was the result of a video, rather than acknowledging right from the beginning that this was a well-planned, well-executed terrorist attack…

As O’Brien once again tries to point out that President Obama did mention terror in the Rose Garden speech, Sununu concluded dismissively: “This is ridiculous, and if you’re going to dwell on this, you’re out of your mind.”

  How profound is this statement,
  In one of the most important elections in America & for the world the partisan’s that control the media have inserted their interest into the debate at the expense of the people’s. By allowing a lefty like Candy to control what was a potential good back & forth between Romney & Obama. By inserting her interruptions at opportune moments she in effect changed what one or the other may have said that could have been very revealing or really stupid in the heat of the argument.
  
  This partisan hack stepped in & stopped the back & forth because she was there to save Obama from disaster.
  This the sad truth. Obama is so bad off tele-prompter that the left had to do something to stop him from blowing it big time. Then even with her running interference Obama managed to screw up. He just had to say that he called the attack in Labia a “terror attack” the very next day before Candy had to jump in & lie in an effort to clean it up!

  Liars all. I put a post on the Blaze chat before the debate started that I was going to watch it to listen to both of them lie, and I was right. Candidates today lie to you continually. Romney is one of the biggest flip floppers that we have seen running for a long time and flip flopping used to kill a candidates chances, but I say that the American people are in REM state anymore.
  One of the biggest from Romney is on the 2nd amendment. He made it sound like he is all for the right for citizens to bear arms, but before running for President, he signed an Assault Weapons ban in MA, and he said in an interview on Meet The Press that he is for taking these weapons off the streets that could be used against the police, and background checks that would keep these weapons from getting into the hands of crazies (Obama’s answer). Who determines who the crazies are?

  No more Town Hall type formats. All these folks had little notes with a question already on it and I don’t believe it was their own ot they wouldn’t have had to read it word for word.   Obama never said on September 12th 2012 that what happened on September 11th 2012 was an act of terror. He stated that there was an uprising of protesters that stormed the ambassador. At the end of the speech in the Rose Garden he stated that the US will not tolerate acts of terror in general, but he never once directly or even indirectly inclined that what happened to those 4 Americans was the result of a terror attack. On September 12th, he never publicly stated that what happened in Benghazi was a terror attack. He did mention terror, but not in reference to Benghazi, he only stated that the US doesn’t like terror.

  The second will be the newspapers. Look how far the NY Times has fallen. It is time to finish them off.   Murder is not terrorism. Murders happen every day. Terrorism puts fear into the minds of those not affected by the killings. Terrorism kills random people in order to instill FEAR. 9-11 was terrorism. I did not know anyone who died, but it certainly affected me as well as everyone else in the USA. Look at it this way – when a domestic dispute results in the husband killing the wife, nobody in their right minds believes that the killer is going after them next, so nobody else is in FEAR.

  You’re missing the OP’s point; the woring POTUS chose means something wholly different than what the press is trying to assign to it. We can terrorize without being terrorists; telephone harssment of a woman by an ex, for instane. Terror can be instilled by other than an act of terrorism; a child lost in a crowded mall is a pretty good source of terror for the parent.

  After listening to his speech, and after listening to this part over and over to think about the context, I do not know how else to interpret it but as a reference to the Benghazi attacks on 9/11/2012. I think someone could make an argument that he wasn’t referring to Benghazi as a terrorist attack, but I think it would be a very hard argument to make.

  Forgot to mention that he seems to be referencing the video and that the attack on Benghazi was an act of terror. The entire speech is pretty vague and I’m sure it was worded that way so no one could directly quote him as saying “this was a terrorist attack.”

  Thanks for the link. I watched it twice and, believe me, I don’t like saying this, but whether he was referring to terrorism in general, to 9/11/2001, and/or to the recent attack is arguable. In the beginning, referring to Benghazi he says “this attack” and “killers” several times. Never as terrorism or terrorists. And he mentiions the “denigration of a religion”, an apparent reference to the practically unknown video. However, later on, he uses the phrase “acts of terror” and, shortly after, again mentions the deaths in Benghazi. They can dance around this and come out smelling at least semi-sweet. What they can’t dance around is that they then went out in force and blamed it all on a protest against the video. Even the president mentions the video over and over at the UN, in effect, promoting it, like any good community organizer would. He multiplied its power. Romney should instead focus on why they did this for so long and from where did the story about the protest originate? There was no video nor any report of a protest. This lie is so transparent, it must have come out of a committee.

  As you can see GASBAG…Obama is referencing the video his administratin tried to blame when he says “We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others”.
  
  When he said “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation[...]“, he’s continuing from his thoughts on September 11, 2001. It’s not in reference to the Benghazi attack at all not even in passing. It’s abundantly clear that Obama is not calling the attack on the US embassy an act of terrorism or else why would he be mentioning people’s religious beliefs denigrated?
  ToomuchCANDYeating Crowley got it wrong and Obama hid behind her generously proportioned skirt like the cur he’s always has been.
  Better yet..here’s Obama two weeks later before the UN..

The “Rose Garden Speech” was actually a well crafted “speak out of both sides of your mouth” speech. Although he clearly said it was “spontaneous” and caused by the video (which he clearly knew to be false), he also by referencing 9/11 was able to include a “terrorist attack” line as a fall back if and when the truth came out. The deceit of this administration knows no limits. There is no hope for this country if he is reelected.

Yes, Obama said the words “acts of terror”. However, it had nothing to do with the Benghazi murders. One has to watch the complete video where, in the beginning, Obama states that Benghazi happened because someone was exercising their right to free speech.

This puts Obama in a bad light because he knows that he was lying on the night of the second debate.

  Obama and Susan Rice said it was a terrorist attack by members of a spontaneous demonstration in front of the compound in Benghazi inspired by the Muhammad movie preview. THERE NEVER WAS a demonstration and there was real time communication to the State Department while the Al-Qaeda pre-planned terrorist attack was taking place. Yes that is what we got – that Obama has been lying about this terrorist attack for days because it puts a lie to his assertion that Al-Qaeda is on the run after the killing of bin Laden – like the Mob was on the run after Capone was jailed.

President Obama and Susan Rice always said what happened in Benghazi was an act of terror or a terrorist attack – that is not the point. The point is they said it was a terrorist attack where the terrorists were made up of a spontaneous demonstration inspired by the Muhammad Youtube movie preview. THAT IS THE LIE. Obama, Susan Rice and the President’s administration were all saying to the public that what happened was not an Al-Qaeda coordinated pre-planned attack and yet they knew it was from day one. Obama has been saying that he has Al-Qaeda on the run and what REALLY happened in Benghazi puts a lie to that. THAT is what Obama is trying to cover up by saying it was merely some demonstrators inspired by the movie when he knew full well the day after that there never was a demonstration at Benghazi. This is what Romney needs to get across in the next debate and stop with the dissecting of whether Obama said it was a terrorist attack or not.
