Check Out the Odd Questions Whoopi Goldberg Asked Ann Romney Regarding the Military and Her Faith

ABC’s “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg called into question Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s lack of military service, asking his wife Ann whether it was because of their Mormon religion.

Whoopi Goldberg on The View Questions Ann Romney of Husband and Sons Lack of Military Service

Ann Romney defended her husband and sons when questioned over their lack of military services, saying they served a different kind of mission. Here she is pictured with her husband, presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney and their son Tagg. (Photo: AP/Carlos Osorio)

In an appearance broadcast Thursday, Goldberg said that if Romney were first lady, she would at some point speak to “mothers whose children are coming home in bags … from wars.” Goldberg then said, “I believe your religion doesn’t allow you to go fight.”

Romney responded that that was incorrect and that there are “many members of our faith that are serving in the armed services.”

Here, Goldberg got to her real question.

“I say that because when I read about your husband, what I had read, and maybe you can correct this, is that the reason that he didn’t serve in Vietnam was because it was against the religion,” Goldberg said.

Romney shook her head to say that, too, was incorrect; she said it was a different kind of mission her husband was serving, and one her sons have taken on as well.

“He was serving his mission,” Romney said. “My five sons have also served missions. None served in the military, but I do have one son that feels that he’s giving back to his country in a significant way where he is now a doctor, and he is taking care of veterans. So we find different ways of serving, and my five boys and my husband who did serve missions, and did not serve in the military.”

Romney said that when she sent her sons to serve in missions for two years, “I sent them away boys and they came back men.” She said that similar to military service, these missions changed her sons because they were going outside of themselves and helping others.

“That changes you. It changes you,” Romney said. “Are we so grateful in this country for those people — men and women — that are volunteering. They’re sacrificing their life for us.”

Bringing the conversation back to how Romney would speak with mothers whose children did not return from war, Goldberg asked how she would respond to them knowing her children hadn’t served.

“I would say that it’s probably the hardest thing that a president and a first lady probably do is to comfort those that have lost a loved one and have gone in harm’s way,” Romney said, noting that her husband went to every funeral for fallen soldiers in their community when he was governor of Massachusetts. “Of course it’s hard. I don’t think any of us can understand the sacrifice that are being made by families.”

Watch the clip from “The View” with this exchange:

Mitt Romney received four deferments from military service during the draft period for the Vietnam War, which he supported at the time; three were academic and one was for “minister of religion.” When Romney was eligible for the draft, his lottery number was not called and he did not enter into service.

President Barack Obama also has not served in the military.

I really despise “The View” and those women are completely out of touch with the vast majority of Americans. I don’t like Goldberg’s question but the Romney’s have nothing to hide that is damaging. I see a lot of people saying “Well, Obama didn’t serve either” or “They never asked Obama these questions” but it doesn’t matter. The problem we have is comparing Obama to Romney when they are completely different. Obama has set the presidential bar so low by mingling with famous peeps from the Hollywood crowd, skipping his daily security meetings, hasn’t taken responsibility since Bin Laden was killed, interviewed with letterman instead of meeting Netanyahu, etc. Romney, if elected, would set the presidential bar high again and not disgrace his office. The media can try to hit Romney with everything they’ve got but that’s ok. He’s been thoroughly vetted and he acts more professional and patriotic than Obama. We’ve become accustomed to mediocrity over the past four years that we’ve forgotten how a real president acts.

I think it’s a bunch of BS myself considering the militant a holes he’s seeking council from on the issue of foreign policy and how eagerly he seems to be about sending more of our troops to die. I mean it was France. Not like he was helping starving people in a 3rd world country or actually going to convince Frenchmen that Israel’s lost tribe was in America. Clinton dodged the draft but protested the War, Romney dodged the draft and cheered as other mother’s sons where being shipped home in body bags, or returned with broken bodies and spirits.

Whoopi, #1: please do your homework before interviewing a person on their religion. #2: Military service is a personal choice (unless government calls a draft). The entire current military force is made up of individuals who volunteered. Parents don’t have to answer for the adult decisions of their children as to whether or not they will join the military.

If, when they are close to reaching the age of 18, we have a draft in place, join the LDS church so you can use the church to dodge the draft and keep everyone from looking down on you for it. Many have already posted right-on comments, but I just want to ask Whoopie, what difference does it make if one or one’s sons served in the military or not as to how you will speak to the families of deceased soldiers? It is a difficult situation, period. One’s service or non-service will not change their sorrow and grief felt. What does change is the perceived respect that the President gives the military, which I believe Obama does NOT and can NOT fulfill and that Romney DOES and WILL fulfill.

The reason that this question didn’t make any sense is because she trying to attack Romney for a belief held by the Jehova’s Witnesses in that they do not believe in serving in the military. This is not a Mormon (LDS) belief. As someone else already pointed out, the Mormon prophet served in the Navy. So, when Ann answered that this was not true, the tie in between refusing military service and being the Commander-in-chief fell apart.

      @JustAngry,
Your ignorance and Paullower-colored worldview shines forth and distorts reality again.
You have no clue about conditions in France: do you think everyone lives in a posh 2nd floor 16th arrondissement apartment with a view of the Eiffel tower?
You have no clue about missionary service: up at 6, bed by 10 the rest of the day teaching, persuading, opening minds and hearts, physically serving, fighting ignorance, vice, ingrained tradition, and rampant atheism under a hierarchy–I won’t minimize the brave servicemen of our country because there’s the critical element of being willing to die for your country if it ever came to that, but aside from that element, the experiences DO have a lot of parallels. And I daresay, France would have been no easy mission in the 60s/70s.
You have no clue about Mormon doctrine: you’re quick to insinuate that it’s illogical for LDS to proselytize in an already Christian nation–don’t you think they’ve thought of that and have an answer? Seems YOU’d be served well by inviting some missionaries into your home to get the straight goods.
You have no clue about foreign policy: your doctrinaire Paullower “non-interventionism” is dangerous, costly, and arrogantly head-in-the-sand oblivious. The world’s a BETTER place when the US intervenes militarily, or have you no clue about HISTORY either (rhetorical question). The cost to the world in blood and treasure would be WORSE without Iraq, for example.

Sad to say, but people like my live in girlfriend watch that crap.

I catch it on our TV every once in a while when I come home from work during lunch break. I always make her change the channel because I am not going to have lunch with a bunch of squawking liberal whores running their clap trap in the background. My girlfriend also asked me a week ago “Who are we voting for”. First thing in my head was, you have to be kidding. I told her Romney but should have said Mickey Mouse.

Just goes to show that we need to be vigilant with our own family and friends this election. Some still do not get it and are on the fence or just plain to lazy to pay attention to whats going on around them.

I don’t know why anyone else would vote for Obama unless you are on the welfare and get a free phone out of the deal.

To call Obama “commander in chief” is such an offense with our Military men and women! America has had other presidents without military experience. But the current inhabitant of America’s White House is also disrespectful, ignorant of what they do in war, and hate their work, so much so that he and his administration are trying to dismantle our Military by cutting the Defense budget and trying to get into their right to vote.

DMD, good point. You know as well as I do that not all people have the mindset to serve in the military. Some are not emotionally equipped for it. That does not make them bad people. It takes a very disciplined and determined person, one who has developed mentally and is capable of sticking to their decision. You are absolutely correct in your statement. Mrs. Romney handled the questions very well in spite of the obvious set up that Whoopie had planned. She thought she had a zinger , and that Mrs. Romney would stutter for an answer. Kudos to Mrs. Romney. Thumbs down for Whoopie. The view is a pathetic program which attempt to brainwash women, just like The Talk. When have you made a committed effort to help those families struggling with the lose of their son or daughter or husband or wife or father or mother? When have you brought anything credible to this world that didn’t require someone to laugh at your dumbass? The Whoop has Mormons confused w/Jehovah’s Witnesses.

JWs are conscientious objectors who don’t even serve in non-combatant roles.

Mormons serve across the full spectrum of military occupations. I met loads of very patriotic Mormons in my time in the service. Their theology is no consistent w/orthodox Christianity, but there are no faults in their love for America.

      1. cult = a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies…while the designation may have been calculated to malign the church in some vague inspecific way, it never really bothered me.

      2. False. No one of any race was ever forbidden baptism/membership/worship in the church. It was in 1978 that race ceased to be a barrier for ordination to the priesthood (requisite for participation in the ministry and leadership of the church).

LDS always had mixed congregations – before slavery was even abolished, before the KKK was even an idea, and before Jim Crowe became law. Administering the priesthood is not the same as being a member or being able to worship. Question- How do you think it would have turned out sending black missionaries into the “South” in the mid 1800s’, early 1900′s, mid 1900′s claiming any authority, much less authority to preach, baptize, bless, or owtherwise act in God’s name??? Somehow I think the narrative would now be about how cruel the church was to do so. Brigham Young said the priesthood was only to be witheld “for a time”, whatever you may think the purposes were. Look up Elijah Abel.

Condi Rice as Secretary of State in 1950- good idea? Think hard on that one.

The Levitical priesthhood was given to anyone right? No. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah on a predetermined date did he? No. It was a matter of the people. How many righteous there were among them seemed to be a pretty important question. What kind of people they were mattered then as it does today. The entire concept of equality of outcome is evil (bait). There is purpose in everything He does or allows to happen, though we may not always see it, especially using our 2012 PC sensibilities to narrowly judge history. I’m sure it must seem arbitrary to those who only want to cheer for or against His team, but to those who seek to follow Christ, live by, and act in faith, it is not.

There was a period of time where they weren’t allowed to hold the priesthood, but that’s a different story. As I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for only 23 years, and will be the first to admit I don’t know everything there is to know about the history of the church, I find I really must respond to your comments. First, maybe, after meeting with Mitt Romney and actually finding out from an actual member of the church what we believe and practice, maybe Mr. Graham discovered that the LDS church is not a cult, that we are christians, and that we believe in all the basic christian gospel principles that other christians believe. Maybe, Etch, you could take that same path of enlightenment to discover the truth.
Second, at no time in the history of the church has it been the practice of not allowing people of color to attend services or worship. What you have confused this with is when the church first began allowing all worthy men to hold the priesthood, and while I could go into detail concerning the reason behind that decision I have a feeling I would be casting pearls,as it were.
Third, the so called “facts” you posted are at best half truths. Maybe you should do a little more research before you post something about which you obviously know very little.

Don’t forget he did legal work for ACORN. That says tons about his Far Left, anti-banking, anti-capitalism philosophy. And the economic disaster of his economic policies.

“Check Out the Odd Questions Whoopi Goldberg Asked Ann Romney … ”

By fair and decent standards, Whoopi’s question is odd. but the question is anything but odd coming from Whoopi. This is common ‘bronx cheer’ coming from Whoopie. It would be odd if she asked a question the was relevant, made sense, or was realistically though provoking. With regards to her question, what about Billy Boy Clinton’s or Barry’s military service? Did Whoopi ever think to ask Hillary when Bill was running for President? Whoppi’s nothing more than an obnoxious liberal shill, who see’s herself as one smart cookie, but is more like a stale deviled egg: She’s gone bad and she stinks

The only thing I thought Whoopi did that was any good, in her acting career, is when she was in ‘Caddyshack’. You couldn’t see her, but you sure could hear her. It’s when Dangerfield was at the country club dinner/dance and Whoopi made one of her typical comments to Dangerfield. It was when he responded by saying ” … it sounded like someone stepped on a duck.” It was Whoopi’s academy award provoking moment. In all other regards she is a lucky looser hardly worth a toilet that’d hold her.

Ann Romney wiped the floor with Whoopie… What a class act, and her response was classy as well…. I’ll bet Whoopie is thinking how stupid and nieve Ann is, which is typical. But the fact is that Whoopie wanted to catch Ann Romney in a back-peddaling gotcha question and she got her butt handed to her. Thank you, Ann for staying on the high road! You represent women well.

Yes Klevalt – couldn’t agree with you more. I was about to write a comment and I read yours and mine would have read the same. Would only add that many times I wish we would stay away from these vile people.

Right on Ann…fighting the good fight of faith is well worth it…look where it got your husband..He is a good man…I’m wondering why conservtive women give the view the time of day…I know I wouldn’t….if the view wants a real draft dodger…they might want to pencil bill clinton in.
