PROVIDENCE, R.I. (TheBlaze/AP) — The Dalai Lama, the 77-year-old Tibetan faith leader who has been in exile since China took control of his country in 1949, didn’t curse at a Brown University event, the college swears — even if the closed captioning said differently.
A closing comment Wednesday by the Dalai Lama was mistaken for a profanity by the person transcribing his remarks for closed captioning at a speech on peace.
ABC6 – Providence, RI and New Bedford, MA News, Weather
The exiled Tibetan leader urged listeners to share his thoughts with others if they found them interesting. If not, he said, they could “forget.” The closed captioning on a large screen at the Rhode Island Convention Center transcribed the remark as an expletive. The Brown Daily Herald further explains:
Though a closed-captioning mistake left viewers with “just f**k it” as His Holiness’ transcribed final words, the Dalai Lama actually turned to humor again in his conclusion, urging the audience to spend their time thinking and discussing — or, if they had been unaffected by his words, “just forget.”
Some in the audience also believed the Dalai Lama, who has a strong accent, had used a profane phrase. Questions have arisen previously over the same comment in other venues.
A Brown spokeswoman confirmed the Dalai Lama said “forget” and said the closed captioning that appeared was an error.

Oct. 18, 2012 at 3:23pmImagine all these comments about the Dalai Lama. He’s not a God and he’s not a prophet and he never said he was but he is a Saintly person especially if your a Budhist. How why can’t a man have his own opinions about God and life especially here in the land of the free and the home of the brave. Have we forgotten what our founding fathers fought for, Religious Freedom. I for one love the man. He’s a real gentle-man, extremely intelligent and has a sense of humor. We could use more men like him in this country. He should always be welcomed especially here in America. God bless the Dalai Lama. Peace.

Oct. 18, 2012 at 1:51pmAs one who practices Zazen as a Buddhist, I would like to point out the the Dalai Lama is not copying Yoda, and is not trying to be a prophet. As a matter of fact in Buddhism there is no prophet, and no “religion” as you would see it. It is an active form of self observation and action in the present moment. It includes a moral code to not kill, steal, etc. And it asks each person to be of right mind and action. If one follows the teachings of the past Buddhas and acts upon the tenants, they will relieve themselves and others of suffering, also known as bad results of their actions.
What you don’t find are evangelical Buddhists, or Buddhists who fight and kill to convert to the philosophy. About all that you will get is the Dalai Lama speaking to those who want to listen trying to have better results in the future. I find it a much better method to try to live a good life, and treat others with kindness and respect. And while sitting on a cushion, quietly watching my thoughts flow by, I for a moment am removed from the the hectic world that seems to try and crush me every day.
I enjoy it, but what you do is up to you, so have a great day and be nice to someone who can’t do something for you and can’t fight back. That is the measure of a man or woman.

Oct. 18, 2012 at 12:29pmDude sounds like a wannabe Yoda.
It might have been nice if the video actually showed the portion of the speech that the whole point of the story centers on.

Oct. 18, 2012 at 10:37amIt is pretty funny to think of the Lama cursing. I know llamas are known spitters, but cursing?
However, it IS in line with his religion. Part of the message of being transcendent is that at a certain point, you can ‘let go’ of worldly concerns. So, in a sense, if you have something worrying you or causing you great anxiety, you can just say to yourself ‘F*** it!’
And on your deathbed you will receive total consciousness, so at least you’ve got that going for you. Which is nice.

Who has?
“He makes his living acting like a prophet.”
I’ve never seen any prophesy he’s made. He’s a monk, not mystic.
“He’s a fraud in sandals”
Actually, he waers regular shoes, often from the Dexter Shoe Company.
“a captain without a ship”
But 360 million sailors ready to go with him.
“and he can’t even get a woman.”
Neither could Jesus.
Weak sause indeed.
