Gun Sales Soar During Obama’s First Term: ‘He Is the Best Thing That Ever Happened to the Firearm Industry’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Tennessee lawyer Brian Manookian says he never considered himself a gun enthusiast. He owns just one handgun and was raised in a gun-free home. But the firearms industry has proven so successful in recent years that he decided to give up practicing law and make guns his livelihood.

It’s a decision that’s put Manookian on track to earn four times what he made as a corporate health care attorney, a job that earned him six figures right out of law school, he said.

And he’s far from alone. An analysis by The Associated Press of data tracking the health of the gun industry shows that President Barack Obama has presided over a heyday for guns.

Sales are on the rise, so much that some manufacturers cannot make enough fast enough. Major gun company stock prices are up. The number of federally licensed, retail gun dealers is increasing for the first time in nearly 20 years. The U.S. gun lobby is bursting with cash and political clout. Washington has expressed little interest in passing new gun laws, despite renewed calls to do so after recent deadly shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin.

Four years ago the gun lobby predicted Obama would be the “most anti-gun president in American history.” Yet it is hard to find a single aspect of the gun world that isn’t thriving.

“The driver is President Obama. He is the best thing that ever happened to the firearm industry,” said Jim Barrett, an industry analyst at C.L. King & Associates Inc. in New York.

Obama has made no pledges to push for new gun control legislation and does not have the support in Congress or among voters even if he did. During this week’s presidential debate, he did suggest renewing a U.S. ban on assault weapons and coming up with an overall strategy to reduce violence. But both Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said the real need is for the government to enforce gun laws already on the books.

Meanwhile, sales are brisk.

Since opening a $5 million armory in Nashville last month, Manookian and his business partner have outdone their own expectations, selling inventory three to four times faster than they expected. The facility has high ceilings and granite fixtures in the bathroom and provides instructional courses and a shooting range in addition to firearms for sale.

“It is a very strong investment,” Manookian said.

Others agree.

For the first time since 1993, the number of federally licensed retail gun dealers in the U.S. increased slightly in 2010 and 2011. The country added 1,167 licensed retail gun dealers, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives records. After the assault weapons ban of 1994 – now expired – the number of gun dealerships dropped annually until 2010. As of October 2012, there were 50,812 retail gun dealers – 3,303 more than in 2009.

“Business has been very good,” said Frederick Prehn, who a year ago opened a small gun store above his dentistry practice in Wausau, Wis. In the past year, Prehn has relocated twice to larger spaces and gone from one employee to eight.

Some gun store owners can’t keep shelves stocked, said Brian Jones, owner of Bullseye Shooter’s supply in Painted Post, N.Y. Jones said he opened his gun store in November 2010. In his first year, he said he sold between 600 and 700 guns. A little more than halfway through his second year, he’s already sold 700.

For the first time in the company’s history, Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. stopped taking orders for a couple of months this year. Ruger, one of the nation’s largest gun manufacturers, has since resumed taking orders, though gun-sellers say demand is still outpacing production.

Dan Wesson Arms, Inc., a small gun manufacturer that sells to a niche market, stopped taking orders this spring because the company had sold out the entire year’s production, spokesman Jason Morton said. The company has stopped taking orders before, but never so early on the entire line, he said.

“Wouldn’t you want to be in a business where customers are just begging to hand you money?” said Bill Bernstein, owner of East Side Gun Shop in Nashville.

Obama is not yet through his first term, but the federal government already has conducted about as many background checks for gun owners and prospective buyers on his watch as it did during the first six years of George W. Bush’s presidency. In the first 3 1/2 years of the Bush administration, the FBI conducted about 28 million background checks. During the same period of the Obama administration, the FBI conducted more than 50 million. The gun industry uses the number of background checks as a reliable indicator of demand.

Ruger and Smith & Wesson represent nearly 30 percent of the U.S. gun manufacturing industry and lead the market in production of pistols and revolvers, according to government statistics. The two companies have been running production lines around the clock, hiring workers and operating at maximum capacity, said Barrett, an industry analyst who also owns Ruger stock.

Ruger’s sales have increased 86 percent since Obama took office, and Smith & Wesson’s sales have gone up nearly 44 percent, compared with 18 percent for overall national retail sales.

And the companies have big expectations for the industry’s future, as they’re spending more money on research and development than ever before.

The NRA itself has done well, too. The lobbying organization has had more cash on hand during the Obama years than it had since 2004, finishing 2010 with more than $24 million, according to the most recent figures available.

“Which makes it incredibly ironic that the gun lobby is opposing Obama,” said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Gross said Obama, who initially campaigned to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired under Bush, has done what he said was “disappointingly little” on gun control.

But the gun lobby says the success of the industry does not indicate that Obama is good for Second Amendment rights.

“This is the most dangerous election in our lifetimes,” NRA chief executive officer Wayne LaPierre said in February, a point he’s made regularly during the NRA’s campaign to defeat Obama.

The gun lobby stands by its 2008 predictions that Obama would be anti-gun. NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam noted Obama’s appointment of two Supreme Court justices whom the NRA considers anti-gun, plus Obama’s support of a United Nations arms trade treaty and the botched operation called Fast and Furious, which the NRA says was concocted as part of a plan to enforce new gun restrictions.

“Gun owners and hunters fear that a second Obama administration with no future political campaigns to worry about will try to destroy this great American freedom,” Arulanandam said.

Fears of a Democratic president taking office and issuing stricter gun control laws led to an initial spike in gun sales in 2008, giving dealers some of the highest profit margins they’d ever seen. But even after it became clear Obama was not going to make gun control a priority as president, the industry has continued to do well.

Fear of crime may be driving some sales. The number of violent crimes rose by 18 percent in the U.S. in 2011, according to Justice Department figures released this week. It was the first year-to-year increase for violent crime since 1993, marking the end of a long string of declines.

Firearm sales typically increase during poor economic times, said Steve Sanetti, chief executive officer and president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association for the industry. More Americans are hunting and shooting for recreation as well, he said. Sanetti attributes that to military servicemen and women with firearms experience returning to civilian life and wanting to keep up with shooting as a pastime. He also said recreational shooting is a relatively cheap and accessible hobby, drawing in new buyers.

Voters have made clear that gun control isn’t a priority. A recent AP-National Constitution Center poll found that 49 percent of adults felt laws limiting gun ownership infringe on the public’s right to bear arms, while 43 percent said such laws do not infringe on those rights. After the recent mass shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, 52 members of Congress sponsored a bill to track bulk sales of ammunition, but the legislation went nowhere.

The firearms industry entrepreneur Manookian said it is clear that guns are a priority for Americans. People around the country are waiting in lines at shooting ranges, he said, cash registers at gun stores are ringing with $1,000 purchases and his brand new armory in Nashville is in the black two weeks after it opened.

On Oct. 17 a 12 year old girl home alone in Byran Co. Oklahoma shot a man that broke into her house. He ran off but was caught. There’s no telling what this dirt bag loser would have done to her if she was not armed. There are storys like this all over the country, all the time. Obama is going to come after our guns if he is re-elected. He is all for the UN international gun control laws that will disarm the citizenry. He’s proven quite well that he will go around our duly elected representatives to get what he wants. He took control of our health care. Guns is the the last frontier. If he takes them what’s next, our souls?

Just heard a blurb about a UN treaty today on Limbaugh,
the speaker was (I believe) Carl Rove. He laid out a
scenario whereby the UN could BYPASS our “2/3rds”
senate requirement and just simply impose the treaty.
Of course no other outlets are talking about it, but I’ll
listen more intently next time. No wonder the DHS has
ordered 1.4 BILLION rounds of ammo….something BIG
is in the wind, and soon I suspect…

Here in Oklahoma we go to open carry on Nov. 1 ST. I’v picked out my open carry gun but will still carry my double barrel derringer in my boot and my wife will carry her S&W Lady Smith. I gave three of my 4 grand sons a Crickett rifle, that is a single shot .22 and at age 5 under supervision of adults they started learning to shoot. As little kids they were always taught not to even point a toy gun at someone. My father in-law did the same on my 3 sons and they started shooting at age 5 and were taught not to point a toy gun at anyone.

It is easy to compare Obama to Hitler . People have read what Hitler did to Europe and the Jews. It will happen here if Obama wins his second term. Dept of Homeland security bought 1.4 billion rounds of ammo ..why? To use against those that oppose the President during his second term. Remember what happened during Clintons presidency. Ruby ridge and in texas. Conservatives will be considered the enemy. Why are the feds buying old prisons? Why did Hitler make concentration camps.

Does anyone remember Elian Gonzalez? I always think of him during the illegal immigrant debate. The Lefties say don’t send the wanted felons caught drinking and driving who are here in the USA illegally, but then the Leftie Poster-boy himself, Bill Clinton ordered that HORRIFYING shock & awe operation that snatched Elian from the arms of his protector. I remember Elian Gonzalez. I remember Terry Schiavo. I remember Mary Jo Kopechne. I remember Gennifer Flowers. I remember Vince Foster. I remember Mena, Arkansas. I remember the friggin’ UKRAINE! I remember ALL of the VICTIMS of the LEFT’S CONTINUOUS AGENDA OF VIOLENCE against me and mine. BUT I also remember Gary Caradori and his son! You country club conservatives think about all that the next time you denigrate me as a lowlife “gun nut”.

I’ve got THOUSANDS of reasons to take the D.C. elite crowd seriously when it comes to rumors of federal gun confiscations, door to door forced inoculations (injections containing God knows what), and FEMA “re-education” camps. Remember, you’re not paranoid if its all true. BUT I think that my family and I will “give peace a chance” if any of that happens. I am pretty certain that even if I did have an arsenal down in the basement, I would have little chance against Uncle Sam. So, my family and I will just peacefully resist and testify continuously of Jesus Christ until the B@ST@RDS behead us all for blasphemy under the UN Noahide Laws.

      Peace Out!

I don’t think the House would approve any gun control measures proposed by the anti-gun liberals BUT I worry about BHO in a second term.

He’s already shown that he’s willing to go around the will of the people/Congress by using executive orders and directing government agencies to create regulations that carry the weight of law.

I don’t pretend to know the President’s mind but given what I just stated; a second term, unconstrained by the opinions of voters (or anyone else), might just find Obama doing an end-run around Congress on the sort of ridiculous gun control liberals are always flapping their lips about.

And when you think about it, the regulations wouldn’t have to say you can’t have a gun they could just make it so expensive for a gun or ammo that no normal person can afford it.

Keep in mind this is the guy who told Sarah Brady that “We’re working on gun control under the radar”.

This is the most dangerous election. It is summed up in three words, “5 to 4″. That’s how close we are to losing our freedom.
The next president will appoint 2 maybe 3 supreme court justices. Two recent cases upheld our second amendment rights by a razor thin 5-4 vote. (2008 (District of Columbia v. Heller), 2010 (McDonald v. City of Chicago))
Obama’s appointments, Kagan and Sotormayor, are anti-gun. I fully expect this pattern to continue.

Defend the freedom that defends all the other freedoms. Fire Obama.

“Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts. These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people.”—Mitt Romney 2004, after signing a PERMANENT state assault weapons ban. Just don’t buy anything that has to be registered and get all the ammo you want/need before obama’s relected, and certainly before he gets to his agenda of confiscating all registered arms and taxing ammo to be more expensive than the arms themselves. He and his bunch know a well armed citizenry cannot be overrun by a gov bent on ending our freedoms. I just hope we all remember that America has the largest armed force in the world, not even counting the military….our hunters. Think about it. How many hunters do we have? How many do you think will be willing to defend their homes if forced to? Does any other county have a force like that? No. The rest of the world have made it against the law to own guns like we do. Oh, and don’t forget about reloading equipment. Stock up on reloading supplies so they can’t trace who are buying ammo and what kinds. Preppers don’t sound quite so crazy any more in light of the obama admin’s dictates on guns do they…

Sorry to say, most any gun you have bought since ’68

Let alone the tired old rap that “it’s not about hunting”, some of us in VT would just as soon not have those CT/MA/RI hunters…we get tired of deer camp being read as beer camp, racing ATVs all night long, shooting across roads, and teaching dimwits how to clean and zero their firearms.

What’s even funnier is the fact that a lot of these gun nuts artificially drove up the prices
of firearms fearing an Obama tax on guns. They drove them up higher than any tax would
    have done.
    —————————————————————————————————————————
Neither firearm nor ammunition prices have increased substantially enough to keep any
gun enthusiasts from purchasing what they want.
Whats really funny is one day in the near future when all heII breaks loose, all you anti-gun,
anti-second amendment F’s will end up like this:

while the rest of us take care of business.

You can buy an AR-15 upper right now for $379 same as 08. You can buy a bare lower right now for $189 same as 08. Ammo has ticked up slightly due more to the price of lead and copper (commodities). Winchester 748 gun powder only went up a dollar a pound since 08.

Food and gas are up anywhere from 25% to 100%. Try again Antitheist. You are as wrong as all of your other dim witted idiot lefties. Stupid much?

We are American Citizens with a 2nd Amendment. When we feel threatened, that old 2nd A comes in mighty handy.Obama will never publicly state his disdain for an armed citizenry. He’d rather pursue his goals ‘under the radar’ as he was quoted as saying to the Brady Group.Fast & Furious anyone?.And I’m not so sure that the George W.Bush administration wasn’t also involved in F&F.

I bought two 9mm and a 45, I already have several rifles which i deem more dangerous than a handgun as you will never know where the shot came from if someone does use it but had to pay for three background checks for the handguns. If i wanted to get 5 rifles i would have had to do 1 background check. Go figure

If BHO wins I expect to see an AWB bill in congress. I don’t think it will get past the house, but BHO pretty much said he’d support an AWB in the second debate. If BHO wins, I’ll be down at the gun store on 7 Nov. Mitt doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy when it comes to an AWB, I’ll probably still be down at the gun store if he wins.

I can tell you exactly why gun sales have increased..my buddy owns a gun store and I help him out a couple times a week… #1 people are afraid they aren’t going to be able to buy guns in the future, this is because of obama and because of hillary and the UN. People figured if they buy them now they will be “grandfathered in”. #2 The class warfare, the racial divisionism, and the impending fiscal problems that loom on the horizon make people want to be able to protect themselves and their families… amy are 1st time gun buyers while others want to increase they’re collection.. they all buy ample amounts of ammo as they fear that will become scarce as well… and as many of you know isn’t far from the truth…. Many 1st time shooters become comfortable with their firearms and actually ENJOY the sport of shooting!!! Imagine that.. people enjoy it as a pass time… an impossible concept for the liberals to grasp… They associate guns with violence because that how their constituents and supporters use guns……..

The other day I was talking with a retired State Trooper about this very subject. I asked him what he thought about a President that wakes every day knowing HE personally has created a trend in US gun ownership and carry permits. The look was one of inquisitive astonishment. Nobody thinks about a trend such as this being related to Presidential policy. Especially policy that would be considered “gun restrictive”.

As usual, the left has no idea of their own lack of foresight.

The full auto laws go back to the 20/30′s. You really want thugs having class III? You can apply for the tax stamp and do it now, if you gotta have a machine gun. And you can acquire suppressed, if you apply. Judging by your posts, you don’t actually apply much at all.

Okay, just because Romney is on Team R, that does not (by default) make him more “gun friendly” than Obama. Romney has what some are spinning as a “complex history” on gun control. Like abortion, Romney has proven himself to be mutable on this hot button issue based on the political winds. You either recognize that truth, or don’t. I don’t care what you choose to believe. I do care that Romney’s OWN WORDS and approach to policy can be reviewed thru independent web sites. DON’T go to any site that openly supports or is linked to Romney ’cause you will be subjected to some revisionist history.
I’m not here to defend Individualism so much as to encourage people to not swallow partisan spin. Like it or not, kiddies, there are a helluva lot of progressives on the right who want to see the great, unwashed masses limited with respect to firearms rights, if not disarmed. I refer you to that great R “lion”, Peter King. By review of his own words and actions, Romney is no friend to gun ownership. Romney is (say it with me) “a big gubment progressive who believes in authoritarian rule.” Hell, Charles Krauthammer has only recently realized that gun ownership is something the whole of the U.S.A. takes seriously.
Believe as you will. Romney sees many of us as slack-jawed mouth breathers who can’t be trusted. But other than, that, yeah, he’s all about us being able to arm and defend ourselves. Funny how lip service allows all to be forgiven.

At least the money is going to the gun industry wherein the money can be used to make more guns and make better guns. If it went to taxes it would go to Joe Schmo down the street that doesn’t want to edumicate himself, get off the sofa, find work and earn some money. I’ll happily pay more to gun stores and gun manufactures over paying more taxes to the Government and their bureaucracies.

Obama-like-anti-2nd-Amendment GOONS in Chicago want to enact a $5 PER BULLET (like “clips” and magazines, KNOWLEDGEABLE people call them rounds or cartridges) tax. That is INFINITELY more than has happened with the prices on ammunition. The prices HAVE gone up artificially, but that is due to rounds need for war, AND, is ONE of the reasons the Obama-Holdr-led government is buying up so many rounds – to MAKE the prices SKYROCKET (see a TREND @Antetheist, you dumb-azz – i.e., energy, etc.)?

So is your beef with “gun nuts” (i.e., citizens engaging in lawful commerce directly linked to the Second Amendment) or with capitalism (and the law of supply and demand)?
Let’s consider how this can be turned around. So if Romney is elected, will there be a glut of abortions? “I want my abortion now before my right to end a human pregnancy that is euphemistically called the ‘right to choose’ (and laughably supposed to be squirreled away in the 14th Amendment) is taken away!” Damn it, now how are we going to pay for all the abortions?!?
