Another Gaffe? Biden Says Lilly Ledbetter Act ‘Not a Big Deal’ in Terms of Equal Pay

Joe Biden Says Lilly Ledbetter Act Not a Big Deal in Terms of Equal Pay in Florida

The Democratic Party has spent months pushing the narrative that Republicans are waging a “war on women,” whether the focus is 31-year-old Sandra Fluke and her subsidized birth control or Mitt Romney’s “binders full of women” remark.

Throughout the presidential campaign, President Obama has repeatedly cited the Lilly Ledbetter Act when asked about how he is rectifying unequal pay between men and women, touting it as one of the achievements of his presidency.

Obama added during last week’s presidential debate: “When Governor Romney’s campaign was asked about the Lilly Ledbetter bill, whether he supported it, he said, ‘I’ll get back to you.’  And that’s not the kind of advocacy that women need in any economy.”

But now, Vice President Joe Biden has somewhat contradicted the administration’s narrative, saying the act is actually “not a big deal in terms of equal pay.”

Speaking at a campaign event in Florida, the vice president explained:

Ryan voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Act.  All [it] said was if a woman finds out she’s been treated and treated wrongly– cheated in terms of her salary and benefits at work– that she’s able to sue from the moment she finds out.  That’s all it said.  Because they were locked out they said that if you didn’t learn within two years you were being cheated, then you’re out of luck.  But we changed the law.  It’s not a– it’s a big deal for women, but it’s not a big deal in terms of equal pay.  But it’s an important– and they couldn’t even support that.  Talk about being out of touch. [Emphasis added]

Biden clearly wasn’t trying to denigrate the act, but downplay it to say Republicans “couldn’t even support that.”  However, in stating it’s “not a big deal in terms of equal pay,” Biden appears to be undercutting the entire point of the bill– and any praise the president should receive for passing it.

Here is video of Biden’s remarks:

      @ DMERWIN

You are correct, this law just opens the door for anyone (lawyers) to sue at any given point and time based on the last paycheck that supposedly compensated the “victim” regardless of when they truthfully felt as though they may have been paid unequally, The current Fed law allowed for 180 days, this one extends it to 2 years I believe, but it really doesn’t apply just to women, but to everyone, so I think they are playing it up toward women, but Joey B. let the cat out of the bag in a way, they didn’t really do anything for “women” per se, but are trying to claim that they did, sort of like claiming 5m jobs created, but not claiming the 5m lost leaving a net loss of 61k jobs….ya know? Just more BS for stupid people to believe.

The myth of women being paid less for the same work is perpetuated by excluding the number of hours worked. Women work fewer hours because of maternity leave and caring for elder parents. If you look at the number of hours worked, women, in many cases, are paid more than men for the same work. Google “damon koch small craft advisory” to read political commentary.

Out of the mouth flows the abundents of the heart. Their hearts are just being revealed like Glenn Beck said they will soon be proud to say we are socialist. And the only way we can we can shut them down is holding them to there words. 34 lawsuits under Lilly bedwetter in all the time since. It was a giveaway to lawyers and a strawman issue used by dems to point to and say look what we did ……knowing their constituents are too dumb not to know it was already a law before then

Oh, I see. When the subject is a democrat, we are supposed to infer their meaning, even when their words say something different. Only republicans are required to be literal, democrats can say whatever they want, because they don’t always mean what they say, they sometimes mean whatever it is they meant to mean… Does that sum up your ridiculous position?

According to Biden’s own words at the debate last week, and he was VERY firm about this point, “I always say what I mean.” Was that another lie? (I know it was, but G.E.R. you can’t have it both ways)

I just read that Bill and that’s not what it says….

What it says is that anyone who finds out they are being discriminated against, pay wise, can go back 2 years once they find out, to recover the difference in pay. (2 years only… so you’re out of luck if you’ve been with that company for 20 or 30 years and just find out)

The word “woman” is no where in the Bill. Read it for yourself……

So, if you’re a liberal woman, a liberal disabled person, a liberal young person or a black liberal the Democrats are lying to you.

      The changes made were to;

Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990
      Rehabilitation Act of 1973
      Civil Rights Act of 1964
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
and the SCOTUS ruling in “Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., 550 U.S. 618 (2007)”
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967

That it…. you are being lied to. And the liberals “limited” you to only 2 years of back pay “if” you win your case.

So why are you voting for Obama/Biden ????

And that is why Republicans most likely voted against it since it really does nothing but line the pockets of Ambulance chasers like Gloria Allred.

Women are paid an hourly rate equal to men but the problem is that they don’t work as many hours as men to get the same take home pay. When schools have sick children who do they call(?) 99% of the time it is the child’s mother. And then she has to take off work to take the child home or Dr. and that creates the argument for the Progressive Democrats to push the “EQAUL PAY” war.

And if you say any different they drag out the Ledbetter legislation as a straw man or what I would call a false flag.
