Muslim Cleric Calls for Destruction of the Jews and Egyptian President Morsi Mouths Amen

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi shown by Egyptian TV apparently mouthing Amen in response to anti-Semitic sermon

The translators at MEMRI – the Middle East Media Research Institute – have posted a new video showing Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi attending Friday prayers at a mosque in the Matrouh governorate in northern Egypt. During the religious service, the Muslim cleric Futouh Abd Al-Nabi Mansour gave a sermon that included a prayer to destroy or deal harshly with the Jews, and to grant victory over the “infidels.” In the clip, it appears that Morsi is mouthing the word “Amen” after each of the cleric’s pronouncements.

During his Friday sermon, Mansour, who heads the region’s Islamic Endowment, said:

[...] Oh Allah, absolve us of our sins, strengthen us, and grant us victory over the infidels. Oh Allah, destroy the Jews and their supporters. Oh Allah, disperse them, rend them asunder. Oh Allah, demonstrate Your might and greatness upon them. Show us Your omnipotence, oh Lord.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which quickly denounced the hostile words and Morsi’s response, provided a longer and slightly different translation.  According to the ADL, the Imam said:

“Our God, grant us victory over the infidels… Our God, deal harshly with the Jews and those who are allied with them… Our God, our God, deal harshly with the Jews and those who are allied with them… Our God, frighten their masses… Our God, disperse their union… Our God, show us your strength over them, your greatness over them… Our God, reveal to us your wrath over them, you are the Lord of creatures.”

The ADL posted a statement on its website slamming “the anti-Semitic rhetoric coming from the highest echelons of Egyptian society.” The organization writes:

“The drumbeat of anti-Semitism in the ‘new’ Egypt is growing louder and reverberating further under President Morsi and we are increasingly concerned about the continuing expressions of hatred for Jews and Israel in Egyptian society and President Morsi’s silence in the face of most of these public expressions of hate,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.  “The United States and other governments with influence on the Egyptian leadership should publicly urge President Morsi to speak out against this disturbing manifestation of hatred toward Jews.”

Earlier this week, ADL wrote to President Morsi urging him to reject statements made by the supreme authority of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed Badie, who called for violence against Jews and Israel.

Last week, TheBlaze reported on the call by Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie to the Muslim world to carry out “holy jihad” against Israel to capture Jerusalem.

On its Facebook page, Christians United for Israel is asking its members to express concern about Morsi’s mouthing Amen.

MEMRI provided clips taken from Egyptian television’s multi-camera shoot, in which the preacher and Morsi were filmed by separate cameras, presumably simultaneously. TheBlaze cannot verify more information about the service as there is no angle shown of Morsi and the preacher in the same shot.
