Is Obama About to Use a Year-Old Story as His ‘October Surprise?’

With President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney neck and neck, speculation has raged that people close to the president’s campaign will trot out some sort of “October surprise” to try to drag Romney down in the polls. Now, with President Obama’s debuting a new phrase on the campaign trail – “Romnesia” – some conservatives think they’ve worked out what that surprise might be.

The problem? It’s not a surprise. It’s a year old story. Gateway Pundit explains:

[Gloria] Allred has a reputation of dragging perceived female victims in front of the camera as props to bash Republican candidates. In October 2010 Allred dragged out illegal alien Nicki Diaz to attack heartless Meg Whitman. [Diaz] was upset Whitman didn’t buy her child a present and claimed Meg took advantage of her despite the fact she made a good wage. In November 2011 she dragged out Sharon Bialek who accused Herman Cain of sexual abuse.

Considering her past record it is likely this year’s October surprise involves Carrel Hilton Sheldon, a former Mormon.

The book Horror Stories: Mitt Romney’s Shameful Record with Mormon Women details Mitt Romney’s “psychological intimidation and bullying” during his role as a Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The report describes how Romney “tried to bully” Carrel Hilton Sheldon when she was suffering through a difficult pregnancy into not having an abortion.

Now, in the most literal sense, Sheldon’s story is an “October surprise.” Unfortunately, that surprise came last October. The New York Times reported on October 15, 2011:

Mormons oppose abortion, except in extreme cases like rape, incest or where the life of the woman is in danger — and require that church elders be consulted. In 1990, Exponent II, a Mormon feminist magazine that Ms. Dushku, the Suffolk University professor, helped found, published an article by a married mother of four who recounted her own experience after doctors advised her to terminate her pregnancy when she was being treated for a potentially dangerous blood clot.

Her bishop got wind of the situation, she wrote, and showed up unannounced at the hospital, warning her sternly not to go forward. The article did not identify Mr. Romney as the bishop, but Ms. Dushku later did.

Now the woman has come forward, identifying herself in Mr. Scott’s book as Carrel Hilton Sheldon. (Through Ms. Dushku, she declined to be interviewed.) “Mitt has many, many winning qualities,” she is quoted as saying, “but at the time he was blind to me as a human being.”

Ms. Dushku sees hypocrisy and callousness; Mr. Scott sees inexperience.

“I don’t think he’s an evil, unfeeling, uncaring kind of guy,” Mr. Scott said. “He was a brand new bishop, he was pretty young to begin with, my sense is he was pretty full of himself, and he thought that he would not fulfill his obligation as bishop if he didn’t press the matter.”

So there it is – something Romney did at 34 is apparently national news. The “Mr. Scott” cited in the story is Ronald B. Scott, author of the book, “Mitt Romney: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics.” And unlike Ms. Dushku – a Mormon feminist writer named Judy Dushku, and a frequent nemesis of Romney’s during his time at the church – Scott has no agenda.

As to Ms. Dushku’s reasons for her perspective? Charles C. Johnson explains:

As a young stake president (equivalent to a bishop in the Catholic church) Romney counseled against abortion for women under his care. He often clashed with Judy Dushku, a Mormon feminist figure and the mother of actress Eliza Dushku. Dushku has repeatedly argued that Romney was more conservative on abortion in private than he was publicly. Local Mormon leaders redrew the map of the local wards to guarantee that Romney and Dushku would never meet in what was known as the “Duskhu gerrymander, an unrequested courtesy extended to their former stake president Mitt Romney and his wife, who would never again have to be face to face with Judy Dushku while they worshipped,” Scott wrote.

In 2007, Judy Dushku recalled a published anonymous article in her feminist Mormon magazine, Exponents II, by a Mormon woman who wanted to have an abortion in 1990 when Mitt Romney was a stake president. (The article did not mention Mitt Romney by name, but Dushku later identified him.) The woman, Carrel Hilton Sheldon, has since come forward. Sheldon claims that Romney worked very hard to prevent her from having an abortion, even though her doctor (also a Mormon and past stake president) said her pregnancy might take her life. The woman ultimately had the abortion. [...]

In fact, during Romney’s entire time as a Mormon leader, no one was excommunicated.

The story goes further. Not only was no one excommunicated under Romney, he apparently went out of his way to help one woman who had her baby out of wedlock keep her child – even though having a baby out of wedlock is also grounds for excommunication in the Mormon faith. This woman later described Romney in glowing terms. Unsurprisingly, however, Romney’s detractors have focused on his initial urging of the unwed woman to consider giving the child up for adoption as the relevant part of the story.

Nevertheless, given the Obama campaign’s theory that female voters are motivated by abortion-related issues more than the economy (a theory which is backed up by some polls), this particular “October surprise” – if, indeed, that is what it is – might serve to blunt the GOP’s momentum among women. However, given the fact that this story took place 30 years ago – long before Romney even thought of running for anything – and has been vaguely in the news since October of last year, it could also turn out to be just another “Big Bird.”

We’ve learned more about Romney in the last 6 months than about “the one” in the last 4 1/2 years. There are secrets tat “the one’ still has an no one is asking about them. Why are his school records sealed? Why isn’t Biil Ayres a biiger subject along with Marsahll Davis and jeremiah Wright?

  Nothing they do will work – it’s not like the “old days” when it was far easier to fool people. When the Marxists/Commies starting planning all this many decades ago, they didn’t know there would be the Internet, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The truth is getting out too quickly. And an underestimated number of us have woke up and have been busy these last few years. They were shocked at the 2010 elections. The only thing that would work is some staged event that would let them declare martial law and suspend elections/steal them. They’re not past trying everything and anything – case in point – Benghazi. Insiders also said this is what was in their plans. Don’t know where that is now – things haven’t gone according to plan. However, if we have them – no matter who wins, they will no doubt keep trying – they will not give up willingly so stay on your toes.

  @Daddy Hawg, you’re right. I feel like I know more about Romney than Obama and I didn’t pay attention to Romney until a month before he became the “official” GOP Presidential Nominee. I still have not met ANYONE who can truly relate to Obama because his life sounds more like that of a fugitive on the run than someone who grew up loving America. A lot of people think they can relate to Obama but as far as I know he’s not a sympathizer of blacks being slaves a very long time ago. I’d prefer he just get voted out and go back to his mansion in Hawaii.

  With Barry’s continuous bad luck, the October surprise will be when Gloria Allred shows up to her press conference wearing crochless panties, discribing them as the latest left wing fashion trend, telling everyone they are the lefts answer to the mid eastern Burqa, as a show of solidarity to the arab community, causing a huge uproar. The part of her exposed from the garment will have a blinking neon sign which says “Eat At Joe’s!” immediately causing Joe to go out of business, whoever Joe is.   Since one is not born into any religion except Judaism, perhaps someone can explain to me why fully grown adults would voluntarily associate with a religion that is against their personal convictions.,And when the religion enforces it’s precepts, then rather than leave it and go seek the happiness they think they could have if things were different, they instead try to change the entire religion to suit them. I have a good Catholic friend who advised me she loves being Catholic, but cannot abide the pro-life and anti-gay marriage stance is enforced. I encouraged her to go find a church that endorsed her views, if they exist, and she said she couldn’t because she was “born Catholic.” I assured her being born into a church doesn’t make you member any more than being born in a garage would make her a car, but she insists that her religion is innate.

Honestly – if Obama pulls out an ‘October Surprise’ I think it will be a series of ‘surprises.’

It’s right up the alley and SOP for Team Obama to pull off every fabrication, lies, slander and bit of spin they can generate. Look at their efforts to demonize Romney before the first debate, then the failures to attack his policies.

The only event they really can try to play is attacking of his faith, his roles as a father and family, and his morality and integrity – look for one surprise to be the sudden ‘discovery’ of him ‘allegedly having an affair’ or such with someone.

  Good call. I think it’s called blitzkrieg – a tactic to keep the enemy off balance by many sudden, powerful attacks and then continual, fast movement forward through enemy lines without regard to guarding their flanks.
  
  It sounds a lot like the Obama administration vis-a-vis Obamacare when they had Congress and with executive orders and agency “rule changes” since they lost it.
  
  The sheer volume in quick succession makes it almost impossible to respond – except for those unprotected flanks.

  If they come at Romney with “over protection” of the unborn, slam Obama with the nurse’s story from Illinois, while he was a Senator, where he fought to prevent medical care or even comfort measures for a baby born during a botched abortion. Basically the doctor was unsuccessful in murdering the child the first time, Obama voted to ensure a second doc would come in and finish the job. WHICH man do we want making decisions for us.   While Romney was urging a woman to reconsider aborting her baby, Obama was busy voting for legislation that would deny medical care to a baby born alive after a botched abortion. Alread better be prepared to have both candidates records discussed if she goes in this direction.

I know Independents/Constitutionalists think that there isn’t much difference between Obama and Romney, but when you look at their character and morals, they look like polar opposites.

Old news is no news. If he didn’t see her as a human being, then what does she think he saw he as, a goat, a man ? Or as someone who was searching for answers or she wouldn’t have sought his advice. He gave her advice, its not his fault that she had already made up her mind to kill her baby. Its called “choice”lady.   He was seeing the BABY as a human being and hopeful through the eyes and prayers of faith of a righteous man (scriptural); both mother and child would be all right. Her issue is she wanted kill the baby to save herself, which she did and still gets to put blame on Romney (really? how wonderfully convenient). I am not a Mormon or a practicing Catholic but I think it is great to have somebody of faith be available for counsel. Important note, after she chose to kill the baby for her own life, she was not kicked out of the church….had she not chose to go place her guilt upon her Bishop, nobody would know of her killing and blaming. Perhaps, somebody will excommunicate her now!

I don’t understand how Allred would be involved, as this event would not in any way involve lawyers, courts or lawsuits, no matter how spurious. So there would be no ‘client’ for her to drag before the press. This doesn’t make sense, as far as she’s concerned (although that never stopped her before).

  Assuming Sinclair is telling the truth, which I do, begs the question why Obummer didn’t just try to make free condoms part of Obamacare, rather than birth control, as pills do nothing to save one from HIV or STD’s. Even 15 condoms a month, at a bulk rate would cost far less than his pathetic legislation crammed down our throats. So he was stern with her because he knew that if she went forward she would be committing murder in the eyes of the church and would no doubt be excommunicated… Wow, what a horrible person. Is it just me or is this what ANY good, decent and moral driven person would do. Tough love is still love. I had to spank my 7 and 5 year old daughters over the weekend for doing something that was dangerous to their life… I don’t like smacking their butts, but I do it when I have to.

  I am 62 yrs old. My mother was told that either she would die or I would die if she went to term with me, so was advised to have an abortion. She said she believed in God and would take her chances. Obviously I am here, Mother is gone now, but she gave me a chance to survive and we both had a wonderful life. So much for the know it alls. There is a higher power than science and other’s opinion.

If you accept the doctrine of a church and agree to live by that doctrine, then it seems that she is not accepting responsibility for her own actions, anyway.

Personally, I’m more interested in why Putin, Chavez and Castro have all voiced their support for Obama. That alone, is enough reason for me to vote against him. If he is what they would consider a friend, I sure don’t want him. If they consider him so weak, that he is inconsequential, then none of us should want him.

If I let what I’ve seen from SOME Mormons here effect my opinion of every Mormon, I’d say they were compulsive liars dealing mostly in deception.
