U.N. Official Warns: Electing Mitt Romney Means ‘Democratic Mandate for Torture’

The United Nations and its affiliates have been weighing in on U.S. elections with increasing frequency lately– and it’s understandable, considering a wildly disproportionate amount of its funding comes from the United States. In the most recent event, the U.N. special rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights raised what he considers to be the “alarming” implications of a Republican victory.

Ben Emmerson lamented Mitt Romney’s position on waterboarding: “There is no doubt that the Romney administration would be able to claim…a democratic mandate for torture…That would put Romney as the first world leader in history to be able to claim [that].”

While he also objected to the secrecy surrounding President Obama’s drastically expanded use of drones, he apparently considers them a preferable alternative.

Emmerson says he plans to voice his concerns about a Republican victory at an upcoming U.N. meeting, but is not being quiet in the meantime.

The Canadian Press relates:

Emmerson, who was in Toronto to attend a symposium on the negative impacts post-9/11 security measures have had on human rights, said Obama had begun to realign U.S. policy with international law and the universal abhorrence of torture.

Romney’s approach was now threatening to undermine that progress, he said.

“The re-introduction of torture under a Romney administration would significantly increase the threat levels to (Americans) at home and abroad,” Emmerson said.

“Such a policy, if adopted, would expose the American people to risks the Obama administration is not currently exposing them to.” [Emphasis added]

The third debate between President Obama and Governor Romney will focus on foreign policy, where such issues are likely to come up.

However, Twitchy captured a number of tweets from Twitter users already weighing in on the topic. “It seems that most Americans don’t really like the United Nations telling them what to do,” they summarize.

One commenter concluded: “Defund and deport this useless nuisance.”

  So the UN is going to be a neutral party monitoring our election (illegally and without jurisdiction). How can you trust this group to be neutral when the current administration sends them more money than any previous presidency, and at the same time they are making statements like this about the competition?   No **** face, the intel gathered from torture in 2002-04 did not help get Bin Laden a decade later. If the intel they received from torture was any good he would have been dead YEARS prior to when he was actually killed.   I don’t have any use or respect for the UN and have been following their failed policies and practices for many years now in many countries.

  To sneak in privily without most Americans even being aware of it or what is involved. To sell the very heart and soul of all that is America and replace it with International beliefs and practices.

  @Dora and Soy, the problem with the 2 of you is neither one of you listen and comprehend very well. Romney said he will appeal Obamacare and the replace it part, is to leave it up to each individual State and let them decide if they want a mandated Health Care Plan where the voters make the decision if they want it or not, just like they did in MA. Romney has also said that he would open up the market by allowing businesses or individuals to shop for Health Insurance across State borders. This will lower the cost of insurance because company’s and individuals will have more choices to choose from and will choose whoever has the lowest premiums, which will cause others to lower their premiums in order to stay competitive. This means that smaller businesses who can’t afford to offer Health Insurance to their employee’s, now can.

I hate the UN, but seeing who is advising Romney on foreign policy I believe it. I mean they were fine establishing GITMO and torture under the dumb Bush. Of course no one here has been able to name a society that has created a secret prison outside the rule of law that used torture that hasn’t turned the abuse onto it’s own citizens.

  @Anon, Well Europeans carved up the Middle East after WW2 splitting traditional territories to intentionally keep them weak, then in the 1950′s our CIA overthrew Iran’s elected government and propped up a brutal dictator, then the hostage crises in 79. And during that crises all they wanted was an apology for the 50′s that we refused to give despite admitting to what we did years later.   Neither, I’m not a binary twit. They both suck equally. Romney is a tad worse on foreign policy which isn’t saying much considering what a d**k Obama is on the matter. They are both Federal Reserve loving central planners. Meaning neither has a clue and neither has ANY interest in restoring our freedoms AT ALL. Romney is slightly better on regulatory and energy policy if you believe he won’t change his mind. That being said, that’s small potatoes and will surely be offset by another war. They share the view of constitutionalism, and economic theory. They’re even backed by the same Banks. There is absolutely NO substantial difference between the global elites’ puppets. The one thing you have to consider is Romney would probably be able to get a gun ban and cap and trade through whereas Obama has met stiff bipartisan resistance. It’s nothing more than a show like the WWF. I mean Obama isn’t any different than Bush and Bush wasn’t any different than Clinton and Clinton wasn’t any different than Bush. NOTHING is changing for the good with our two party (hardly) system.

  Romney will continue the policies of TOTUS and Bush (his foreign policy advisers are all hold overs from the Bush administration) keeping us in a never ending war with terrorists whom we supply weapons and money through our surrogates to do our dirty work in places such as Libya, Egypt and Syria.
  
  We have the largest and best equipped military in the world. TOTUS wants to gut it and Romney wants to expand it. Anyone ask why? Just as TOTUS, Romney believes in NDAA, CISPA and drones both or foreign and domestic use.
  
  What would the people of this country do if Mexico decided to start using drones in US territory to go after drug cartel members? They too could use the same argument in favor of collateral damage.

  I would suggest we throw a party there. We put up lavish decorations, have a 30,000 a plate caterer parked out back, red carpet rolled out. We call it the “Fundamentally-changed America Gala” we invite the communists, most of congress, the 0 (zero), the lock step media.
