5 Things to Watch for During Tonight’s Foreign Policy Debate Showdown Between Obama & Romney

Watch tonight’s final presidential debate live on TheBlaze TV and get instant reaction and analysis immediately after from the “Real News From TheBlaze” team. It all starts at 9pm ET. Get the details here.

(TheBlaze/AP) — Tonight, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney will face-off in the final debate of the 2012 presidential season. The subject? Foreign policy — an issue that has surprisingly risen to prominence in the final months of the campaign following attacks and protests that broke out in the Middle East on September 11.

While the campaign has mainly been about jobs and the economy, with new developments and debate surrounding the Obama administration’s handling of Libya, the pundits and the public will be playing close attention tonight.

Below, find the five things to watch for when Obama and Romney debate tonight:

1. THE TIEBREAKER: Romney ran away with the first. The two parties either tied (or Obama edged him — depending on whom you’re speaking with) in the second. Stakes are high for their third and final showdown. Does that mean a repeat of last week’s ornery tone? Or will the gravity of the issues — war, terrorism, world leadership — inspire more dignified discourse?

2. REMATCH ON LIBYA: It sparked one of the hottest exchanges of the second debate. And there’s more to it than when Obama called the consulate attack an “act of terror” (i.e. like inconsistencies coming from the administration for days following the attack) Expect to hear about failed security, intelligence lapses and the Obama administration’s shifting account of what happened in Libya.

3. ROMNEY’S TEST: The former governor and businessman knows how to turn companies around — but he has, in terms of his time spent tackling issues — limited foreign experience. He took hits for comments that ruffled British and Palestinian leaders last summer, and for hastening to criticize the administration’s response even as chaotic events were unfolding in Libya and Egypt. This debate is the prime moment for Romney to display the knowledge and judgment to lead on the world stage.

4. ON DEFENSE: Obama must defend four years of foreign policy. Expect Romney to accuse the president of weakening America’s world leadership by mishandling Iran’s nuclear ambitions, the pullout from Afghanistan, the Syrian conflict and the U.S. relationship with Israel. Can Obama rebut that criticism and focus on ending the Iraq War and killing Osama bin Laden?

5. A NEW MEME? First Big Bird. Then “binders full of women.” Watch Twitter to see whether another phrase catches fire while the debaters are still onstage.

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

No. The democrat and republicans (same thing) no longer declare “war,” as the Constitution demands. So democrats and republicans (same thing) will CONTINUE their UNCONSTITUTIONAL, BLOODY, BANKRUPTING, FAILED foreign policy of welfare, warfare, propping up and tearing down.

…and the inevitable blowback will continue for decades to come.
(good thing the two leftists no longer have to deal with Ron Paul in debate, right?)

Obama will get his clock cleaned tonight. His foreign policy is a mess and if Romney just hammers him on Libya it’s all over, especially since even Candy Crowley admitted Romney was right in the second debate when she defended Obama:

Easy strategy to win the debate. According to Aaron Klein investigative journalist, 770 WABC:

Lie #1. THERE WAS NO CONSULATE. Benghazi “consulate” is not an official consulate, but a secret mission by CIA operatives. That’s why there were no usual Marines security. It was guarded by a few Libyan soldiers and a private American security firm.

Lie #2. THERE WAS NO RIOT. It was not a consulate but a CIA operation center arming Libyan, Syrian, Jordanian, whatever, militants, INCLUDING AL QAEDA militants, all over Middle East. Something went wrong, and our spooks were killed by one of their partners – militias, or by one of their competitors, or by Iranians, or… who knows…

That’s why nobody sent QuickResponseTeam with helicopters to help them… which were just an hour away in Italy… sending QRT would be an admission of illegal operations…

That’s why the White House lied for weeks about some mythical spontaneous riot in Benghazi… Nonexistent riot in front of nonexistent consulate…

This is Obama’s Iran-Contra in development… Run by one of the original Iran-Contra guys, btw… Stay tuned…

Thank you for your thoughtful post. I find a parallel between what you are describing and my own feelings for the war in Iraq. I found that my tax dollars were going to uses that I did not believe in whatsoever, things that were immoral. I think I can understand why you wouldn’t want to pay for contraception, from this perspective.

However, I disagree with the previous commenter’s suggestion that I am not capable of having a reasonable discussion on the subject. It is a difference of opinion that does not require one side or the other to be ignorant.

From my perspective, I believe that everybody should have access to healthcare. I also believe that contraception is a crucial part of healthcare, and that everybody should have access to it. If the state doesn’t mandate it, then millions of people will lose access to important care and have their quality of life diminished.

The very fact of living in a society requires that you are willing to compromise. If the nation decides (through an election) that health insurance should cover contraception, would you be willing to compromise with the wishes of the majority?

Liberal/Progressive/Dems care ONLY about winning. This is just another sports event for most of them. Many are so far gone they can’t see or really care about the truth, substantive issues or American values. Never mind explaining the reasons to cut funding to public television…just throw out the word ‘big bird’ and they will listen. Never mind explaining why taxpayers shouldn’t fund birth control and planned parenthood…just throw out ‘war on women’ and they will listen. Progressives have reached their goal of dumbing down the population through the Union agenda and NEA public schools. So, don’t look for important issues to be discussed tonight. Look for silly catch phrases which will be on a 4th grade level. The goal will be ….that was kool, I’ll vote for him.

      Attn TJSON —
Birth control is covered under most peoples private health policies — and therefore covered by private money (as in premiums) — When the government steps in and buys birth control and abortion with taxpayer dollars, it undermines the individuals rights of choice… Do I get to choose where my tax dollars go? only if I can convince the majority to vote my way or am willing to fight up to the Supreme Court to protect my tax dollars from being spent on things I don’t believe in….

The orginal argument of this campaign “season” is that the Catholic church does not support any form of birth control – per their belief system – it’s a matter of principle… and while I know many Catholics don’t follow that rule, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a rule with them.
THEREFORE – the Catholic church does not feel that it should pay for the birth control NOR should it pay for the premiums that pay for the birth control

the main point is – that if you don’t believe in a thing – why should you have to pay for that thing?

I’m sure you can argue that same point on many issues — and if you understand the Constitutions stand on the scope of government, there are many things that should be taken back from the government & put in the hands of the people.

AND quite honestly, I think the people should be more attentive to government … AND more attentive to the needs of their fellow citizens. How many of your neighbors are you helping?

CMama: I believe it’s a human rights issue. At the very least, if an unborn baby has a heartbeat and brain activity which happens at 6 weeks, it’s a human life with the same rights as anyone else. And I don’t want to pay (via my tax dollars) to have that life terminated. That’s why I agree we should remove public funding from planned parenthood. I’m all for helping people with health needs at organizations that don’t perform “contraception” (birth control by terminating human life). I don’t believe in that, and I don’t want to pay for it. I have a right to believe that as an American and a citizen of planet Earth.

The one main thing I want to know is just what Obama meant when Obama thought his microphone was off and he told Medvedev (in their March 26, 2012 meeting) that he would “have more flexibility” to deal with issues like missile defense after the november elections, and asked Medvedev to pass the info along to Putin.

According to Reuters “President Barack Obama was caught on camera on Monday assuring outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he will have “more flexibility” to deal with contentious issues like missile defense after the U.S. presidential election.

Obama, during talks in Seoul, urged Moscow to give him “space” until after the November ballot, and Medvedev said he would relay the message to incoming Russian president Vladimir Putin.” — http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/03/26/us-nuclear-summit-obama-medvedev-idUSBRE82P0JI20120326

So…is Obama planning on further weakening the U.S. by caving on deployment of the European missile shield? Can our allies no longer depend on us if Obama gets elected? God I hope Romney asks him about this one…..

I disagree that the 2nd debate was a “tie”. Romney won that debate clean and clear IN SPITE OF the moderator interfering. Romney’s SUBSTANCE was clear, open and honest, while Obama had NO SUBSTANCE. His mouth was moving but nothing of substance was coming out.
Tonight, the media is DESPERATE. Even if a Romney victory is obvious to anybody with one brain cell, the media will say it was an Obama win or at least a tie. Ignore the pundits after the debate if you haven’t made up your mind yet. Go with who YOU think won! The media’s purpose is to mislead you.

I want Romney to come out Presidential. He needs to draw clear lines about what he will do and what he expects/plans for the end results. I think voters want to know what he is going do since we all know what Obama has done.

I would offer up that Romney does have foreign affairs experience albeit in only one area. As the person who lead the turnaround of the Salt Lake Olympics, he had to deal with representatives of countries and the OIC. I think there was a lot of negotiations going on because of the dismal state of the US Olympic organizers. This is certainly more experience than Obama brought to the table in 2008. I also suspect that in his role at Bain Capital, he dealt with foreign business and governments.

Just like Romney in the last debate consistently tried to out-Democrat Obama on the economy and domestic policy… in the next debate you will see Obama trying to out-Republican Romney on foreign policy. This is a recurring theme among the two parties, and no matter who we choose in November, we will see bigger, more intrusive government, huge deficits, and more war.

I hope someone tells Romney he should begin the next debate like this: “Before we get started, I want everyone to know that Ms. Candy Crowley has publicly admitted she was wrong when she said that obama referred to the Libyan incident as a terrorist attack in his Rose Garden comments. In her own words, in an interview with Senator John McCain, Ms. Crowley asked him why it took the administration 17 days to give a “sort of definitive statement” on the attacks.”
Personally, I’d like to know why obama was so quick and confident to ask Crowley to “check the transcript” and how quickly she responded, it looked like, without even looking down? Did she have the transcript in front of her? Why would she? I smell a couple of rats, a fat one and one with big ears.

Why does Obama get away with saying blah, blah, blah and no one – NO ONE – pursues a more clear answer. We all know the general public doesn’t even know what’s going on. I cringe when I watch these reporters ask citizens to identify a picture of a prominent person and they have no idea -same with policy questions. They just know they’re for Obama but they don’t know what the reporter is talking about when he voices something in the news. Give me an uneducated high school person everytime. Don’t forget the Mexican disaster known as Fast-n-Furious.

This is rich fodder for Romney if he does his homework. Aside from killing bin Laden, Obama’s foreign policy has been an abject failure.

they are both bought and paid for by the elite of elite, just vote for romney and then in four years get someone else and so on and so on, don’t let anyone have 8 years for awhile, the main damage is done in the second term, so deprive them of that opportunity

Another view is the more you put on the Government benefits package the more the taxpayer is on the hook for makes as much sense as offering early retirement.

Here is my new phrase to use:

“Obamafied” – the moment when you show how utterly bankrupt your ideology, morality and character are in additon to being shown as completely insane.

I’m so sick and tired of all this.
    Obama is going to win.
Race is too close for Romney in all honesty to win.
    It’s over.

Depends on the level of fraud that we will see this time around and it also depends on the motivation of legit voters as well as the bias of the polls you are seeing that it is saying that it is that “close”. Romney does need a substantial victory to overcome the fraud, but I am not convinced that it is over yet. Tonight might be make or break time.

If Obama’s argument is that we can’t elect a POTUS with no foreign policy experience…he is admitting his own election was a mistake. Reagan never held office higher than Governor when he ran and he did pretty well.

GONZO, Gotta agree with you on that. After watching Carter flounder around with a then weak and unstable Iran. The Soviet Union stepped up their activity. But later while I was still in the Army, and even though Bush 41 was in office, the Soviet Union collapsed because of what Reagan started. After spending 6 1/2 years in Europe and the first tour very close to the Czech border, then the East German border, that really brought us all some relief. Just seeing the Berlin Wall coming down on TV brought chills down my spine.
