N.C. Man Says He Was Imprisoned, Beaten by Church Because He Was Gay: ‘Definitely a Cult’
A North Carolina man claims he was held in captivity for four months by members of his former church because they learned he is gay.
Michael Lowry, 22, says he was physically and emotionally abused by members of the World of Faith Fellowship Church, the Charlotte Observer reports. He claims he was held in a “dorm-like facility” from Aug. 1 to Nov. 19, 2011.
ABC News has more details:
Lowry told ABC News affiliate WLOS that he was knocked unconscious by church members in Aug., 2011, as they read him scripture because of his sexuality.
“The pastor said to find out what my darkest secret was, and I was like, ‘I’m never telling,’ Lowry told WLOS. “They hit my head with fists and I was out on the floor, they held my hands and feet down and were pushing on my chest and I could barely breathe.”
The Word of Faith Church was investigated for child abuse and founder Jane Whaley was convicted of abusing a congregant. The conviction was later overturned. The church also sued North Carolina’s Department of Social Services in the 1990s over the child abuse charges, obtaining a $300,000 award and having the child abuse charges expunged, according to court records.
ABC News has more:
Lowry’s former pastor, Jane Whaley said Sunday that all of his claims are “lies.” She says Lowry was not confined or beaten and claims the church only found out that he was gay when his family did, after seeing a news report by an Asheville, N.C. TV station on Thursday.
However, Jerry Cooper, a former member of the church, told WLOS that World of Faith was “definitely a cult.”
“I’ve witnessed it,” he said. “I’ve witnessed the paddlings, I’ve witnesses the people held downβ¦I’ve witnessed all of it.”
The case is currently being investigated by the Rutherford County District Attorney’s office.
Brent Childers, executive director of Faith in America, said if Lowry’s accusations are proven true, they would certainly amount to a hate crime.

All you can feel is love when you see it. You see how many people and churches are in touch with this church? Do you think it would be abusive and all these people have anything to do with them?

There have been attempts but you need to realize that this is a very power group finacially. Most that get out want to just get away and not look back plus they are fearful of Jane and her people and it is embaerassing for them. they are also brain washed that they will burn in hell for talking about the church. I would compare it to leaving a gang.
As you can see by some of the comments people have a hard time believing that this is going on so they are critcal of the accuser. I have been truthful and yet have been treated as if i was not telling the truth.
As for the site they would not be able to bring in new people if they told the truth. If this is really followed up as it should be you will see that all I have said is true. The family memebrs I have been talking about are very close to me and I had to take cre of them after this happend. They still do not like to talk about it. I contacted one of them after seeing this on the blaze and they told me that they would prefer to never talk about these people again. You see they did go to the authorities with what was going but it never went anywhere.
The reason I contiue to post about this is to tell the truth and hopefully save someone else from going through what we went through. Just keep up with this story and see where it leads. You may just get an eye opener now that there is media coverage.

Posted on October 23, 2012 at 8:05amI agree. The true church tolerates a lot of sin, because sin is between you and God. Every sin is the same, whether it be adultery, homosexuality, gossiping, etc. God still loves the person (thank You, God), and only hates the sin. But we ALL sin and fall short of the Glory of God. All we are supposed to do is point out that the person is sinning, not take matters into our own hands. this is a cult.

Posted on October 22, 2012 at 8:46pm“Hate” crime is BS. ANY criminal act from one person to another is a crime of hate. Race, religion, orientation, etc, does not make the offense worse for those involved. Is there not something called “equal protection under the law?” If he was confined and beaten as he said, then those involved should be punished according to the law. The reason they may have done it- his gayness- should not have any weight on him being illegally confined and assaulted.

Posted on October 22, 2012 at 8:43pmFirst of all I resent any organization being called a CHURCH if and when it’s connected with something of this nature because to me, it’s anything but a church of the God and Lord Jesus Christ that I know. “IF THESE CHARGES ARE TRUE”………. This is a grossly misdirected, brainwashed bunch of people who obviously have decided their interpretation of God’s Word suits their perverted doctrine and have no concept of the God and Jesus Christ of the Bible. “IF THESE CHARGES ARE TRUE”…….. They should be held fully accountable and charged with kidnapping and torture of this individual. I personally 100% disagree with the homosexual lifestyle and believe that it’s an abomination to God as He tells us it is in His Word. That it is and goes against everything that the Holy Word of God teaches concerning the standards of sexual conduct that God lays out for human beings. Besides, what does it profit a man or woman other than gratification of their human lust and perversion? But, Jesus “NEVER” instructed Christians to hate, physically or emotionally abuse and demean another human being because of their sinful condition (which is where we were to start with)…… we should do everything in love towards our fellow man, ALL are God’s creation.

I am a Christian and I agree with you that we should love everyone. Jesus taught that loving God with all your heart, soul, and mind was the principle commandment and the second commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:29-31). Have you seen the Word of Faith website (www.wordoffaithfellowship.org)? It says that they never knew Lowry is gay but that would have made no difference to them because they love him. It also says they do not discriminate against anyone. I also looked at the church doctrine and their beliefs seem typical of charismatic Christians. I think we should all be careful not to judge and wait for evidence to come forth before making hasty assumptions. Also, the children in the website pictures are so cute they sure donβt look abused or mistreated!

“Jesus never said one word about homosexuality. I blame the Catholic Church for distorting the teachings of Jesus. The old testament does not apply to a Christian. Jesus only kept the 10 Commandments.”
You are right that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality because he didn’t have to because He was the fulfillment of the Law (the Old Testament). But you are wrong that the Old Testament does not apply to a Christian; I used to believe that too until the truth of Christ was opened before me even more. The Old Testament consists of God’s Law and no where did Jesus say to only follow the Ten Commandments He was asked by the Sadduccees what is the greatest commandments? And Jesus said,
37 Jesus replied: ββLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.β 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: βLove your neighbor as yourself.β” 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.β
Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV)
None of those are the Ten Commandments. But don’t worry I made this mistake myself. The Law of God is the Law of God. Jesus came down to be the fulfillment of that Law. For example, I get asked multiple times by anti-Christian bigots “Do you stone homosexuals?” I used to get stuck because the Law in Leviticus does say that. Seriously last week through many personal studies it dawned on me that Jesus didn’t die for sins that were

In this country, our judicial system is based innocence until proven guilty. We must not be so quick to accuse this church of beatings until evidence is brought to court. What proof do you have of this church’s history to accuse them so quickly? You need to check out this church’s beliefs and doctrines to see if it matches the definition of a cult. I see a lot of your posts and on some you say that you know this church and Jane Whaley first hand then when you were asked if you had ever been in the church you say that you came to visit family but then you were not even allowed on church property. How can you say you know her/them first hand then? Something does not add up here
