Conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter is known for her edgy proclamations and oft-times controversial take on the issues. Last night, while commenting about the final presidential debate, Coulter took to Twitter, where she seemingly used a less-than-complimentary word to describe either debate moderator Bob Schieffer or President Barack Obama — “retard.”

The pundit tweeted, ”I highly approve of Romney’s decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.” While she didn’t explicitly name the individual being targeted, based on the factors at play, one can only assume that it was either Obama or Schieffer.

As of Tuesday morning, the social media message had been re-tweeted (shared) 2,506 times and it was selected as a favorite message by 1,018 people.

In an article highlighting and deriding the controversial message, Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher wrote that Coulter, “crossed lines of decency untrod even by her standards.”

Politicker also noted that this isn’t the first time the commentator has come under fire for using the word, which many advocates view as an offensive term to people with special needs. A few weeks ago, Dan Niblock, a father of a child with Down syndrome, penned an article on NBC’s “Today” web site, demanding an apology for Coulter’s use of the word in a separate tweet.

“I want Ann Coulter to apologize for using a form of hate speech that is particularly searing to people who have special needs,” Niblock said. “This isn’t about Republicans versus Democrats, it’s about having class and a little decency.”

I have seen zero evidence over the past 4 years to suggest that Coulter was wrong in her assessment of Obama’s mental capacity.

  Coulter would have done better to use Obama’s non-logical way of thinking and leading as attributes to marijuana usage as a member of the “choom gang” back in the day or as potentially recent as a few days ago in the back closet room of the WH somewhere. My question is how is this any different from some of the incredibly crass, classless and hateful things pundits on the left have said about the right, and doubled down on it as well? The only difference is that this was said about the POTUS. Some would argue that the office deserves more respect than that, others would say it doesn’t.
  
  As I look at the posts here the majority of statements are along the lines of “PC’ness has neutered our language and culture.” To that I would completely agree. Nobody can do or say anything without the anxiety of potentially offending somebody. It’s a field day for lawyers and activists only.

  I’m one conservative who believes that name-calling is counterproductive. I’ll fight for Ann’s right to say whatever she pleases, and use my own to call her out on it when she uses it to say something that displeases me.
  Ann: there’s no excuse for someone with your intelligence and vocabulary using epithets where you have access to a hundred more descriptive terms to convey your point. It harms our cause when you give the Left more ammo to discredit our ideas just because of your lack of controlling your mouth.
  
  And now for context: Ann IS the reigning expert on the left’s tactics, which INCLUDE name-calling as a MATTER OF COURSE, and actually doesn’t believe the President’s IQ falls into handicapped range, but rather is playing rope-a-dope with the media who will demonstrate their hypocrisy by seizing on her word-choice while systematically ignoring that of any of the many leftist name-callers out there whose vileness dwarfs her own.

They recognize all too well that the Belief Entitled want to hear and read stories in a biased manner that reflect and reinforce those beliefs. Journalistic integrity, scientific findings, rational analysis are neither desired or required.   While the word “******” might be offensive to some, it can hardly be accurately described as “hate speech.” It was probably the only word she could think of that wasn’t too obscene to describe her feelings and regardless of whatever word she had used, some clown would have taken offense. It would be hard to express peoples’ feelings if all words offensive to anyone and everyone in the world were removed from use.   I think it’s distasteful, but hey, my friends have a child with Down Syndrome; maybe a lot of the people here don’t have the same experience seeing how much these children struggle to get beyond such a label. I found it offensive when Obama said he bowled like he was in the Special Olympics as well (though to be fair, he did apologize right after; one of the only classy things he’s done).
  
  Ann Coulter is to the far right what Bill Maher is to the far left: funny for those with a chip on their shoulder and who enjoy kindergarten humor. It’s not my cup of tea, but then I was always raised with the timeless Disney movie phrase “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

The word is only offensive if used to describe one with a mental handicap. When used to accurately describe the results of a “supposed” normal human, it offers an accurate description of that person’s convoluted performance. Obama is a retarded president. Period. I needed a laugh this morning! For whatever reason Romney refused to beat Dear Leader up in last nights debate. It makes no sense because Dear Leader has so very many skeletons in his closet that it’s hard to choose which one to hit him with.

  Yay!!! Let’s hear it for the Constitution! This is NOT an Islamic country and we are allowed to speak our minds even if someone gets offended. That’s how we roll under our Constitution. We can even make offensive films! If you don’t like free speech, catch the next camel leaving! ( more free seech) even when politically incorrect.   My thoughts exactly. Obama is pure evil, as are the Clintons, Biden, Pelosi, Reid and so many others who the unsuspecting American people have voted into positions of power. People vote for the name they hear the most, the party they idolize, or any number of silly reasons. I don’t know if I’d have used the word ****** but evil for sure. Anyway, I do like Ann coulter.

the name calling is out of hand (from both sides). you read it in the news, you read on blogs and it really comes across as childish.

  Awww gee, not happy with that Freedom Of Speech thing? Oh, only when it is you who wants to speak. Why didn’t you just do what ENCINOM does and scream “Hate Speech” and point out the fact that Ann is not PC? Yeah, every time somebody somebody tosses around Hate Speech, it just means they are striking out against Free Speech. The First Amendment does protect speech that is perceived by some as offensive.
