Apple Unveils New iPad Mini — See It Here

SAN JOSE, Calif. (TheBlaze/AP) — As expected, the rumored “mini-me” of Apple’s iPad was unveiled during an event in San Jose, Calif., Tuesday. This smaller version of the hit iPad tablet computer has a screen that’s about two-thirds the size of the full-size model, and it’s as thin as a pencil.

Weighin in at 0.68 pound, half as much as the full-size iPad, marketing chief Phil Schiller noted, the iPad mini maintains the same resolution as the iPad 2, although only a quarter of the resolution of the third-generation iPad.

Engadget’s live blog reported Senior Vice President of Industrial Design Jony Ive saying, “Our goal was to create a product that can do all the things of the full-size iPad, but pack them in a product that is so much smaller.”

“It’s not just a shrunken down iPad, it’s an entirely new design,” Schiller said.

Watch Apple’s top execs talk about iPad mini in its promo video here. You can watch the announcement below:

The mini starts at $329 and will begin shipping Wi-Fi-only models on Nov. 2. The company will add models capable of accessing “LTE” wireless data networks later.

Company watchers have for a year been expecting the company to release a smaller iPad to counter cheaper tablets like Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle Fire.

In addition to the iPad Mini, Apple also updated its traditional iPad and unveiled new Mac computers, including a 13-inch version of a MacBook Pro with sharper, “Retina” display.

The new model follows a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display introduced this summer, and will start at $1,699. It is expected to go on sale immediately. It is also 20 percent thinner and a pound lighter than the old MacBook Pro, which will still be sold, starting at $1,199.

The desktop iMac slimmed down as well. It is now 5 millimeters around the edges, although a little thicker at the middle of the monitor.

The new model achieves its severe thinness in part by eliminating the optical disc drive. Apple has been leaving those drives out of its most recent laptop models as well.

The event at the California Theatre came only a few days before Microsoft Corp. starts selling a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to work well on both traditional computers and tablets. Microsoft is also releasing its own tablet, the Surface, on Friday.

Thought i try to avoid the cultish behavior that comes with Mac ownership, I love the products. They work out of the box without having to crack it open and upgrade. Just wish they would do something about those smug commercials.

Lots of apple haters here, doubtfully never used an apple product, but seriously apple should tone it down with all the ipod/ipad clones. I mean what’s next, apple mini wheat cereal?

Wow, I knew you And-drones were morons, but the level of wishful thinking and self deception in some of these posts borders on a clinical psychosis.

Here’s a few tidbits about the iPad you might want to know:

91% of all Tablet web traffic comes from iPads.

In June, July, & August, iPads outsold every PC maker’s entire lineup.

Apple sold somewhere around 5 million iPhone 5s in the first seven days, beating all analyst estimates, something no Android phone has come close to.

And lastly, according to Apple, they’ve sold over 100,000,000 iPads.

You may not like or use iDivices, that’s your choice (free country and all), but don’t delude yourselves that Android is threatening Apple’s market share.

I devices usually have largest selection of official apps. They are compatible across all devices for the most part (old will work in new models, not new in old, although sometimes the developers have to patch them for new models). Sure it doesn’t have flash yet, and it’s not open to the home brew community. But it’s got many great exclusive apps itself.

My main reason with sticking with iDevices is to maintain the use of the apps I’ve paid for over the years. I woudn’t want to have rebuy apps.

I know Rush loves Apple and was talking about this today, but, um the Nexus 7 has been around for..never mind. Just another Apple-comes-late-to-the-party moment. I love Apple, but they are losing ground in the tablet and smart phone market. How do I know? My brother is a hardcore Mactivist, but he has an Android phone and bought his son a Nexus 7. No wonder Apple is suing competitors…they are losing competitiveness.

    NUKES VS APPLE TOYS
Articles like this are not going to matter with WW III coming. 2-10 years max. China and Russia against NATO. The US will be nuked. Obama or Romney won’t change our map at this point.
Here’s what is coming. WW III with nukes. The Middle East and Muslim Brotherhood are just distractions. The flash point will come and soon. Your family will die most likely. There is a Russian nuke pointed at every US city over 10K. Why? Russia and China are slowly growning tired of being bullied. Folks you have voted for your death with liberal leaders like Romney and Obama.
Our aircraft carriers fleets will be nuked out of existance. Russia has lots of nuke shelters. The US has almost zero for it’s citizens. US leaders have bug out shelters under mountains. Even the Bible predicts this to happen.

Sounds far fetched until you look at how the stars are lining up and who is saying this.

Baja, Apple is 3 laps behind Google and Samsung, while MS is in the pits getting new tires. You are thinking so 10 years ago. I feel bad for Steve Jobs sometimes; he dedicated his life to overcoming Microsoft, only to have the whole paradigm change…the IT guy at my wife’s firm actually recommended waiting for the MS tablet rather than an Ipad. OUCH.

Libertarian while you seem to not like Apple, I thought I’d chime in, many business are switching to iPads, I’ve not heard of any switching to Microsoft Surface as it’s not a reliable and firm brand yet. On top of this it appears that Microsoft has infuriated and isolated many of it’s loyal business partners with Windows 8 and the surface.

Many experts don’t like how Windows 8 seems to be evolving towards a closed system that doesn’t allow for as much ‘openness’ as Windows 7, Vista, et all… Many great innovators share this opinion it seems. Many businesses including our Government and other great corporations choose to use iPhones for mobile and Windows for desk usage. So despite peoples idiotic hatred of apple (Or any other brand) we won’t see either going anywhere for a long, long time.

and the moment the market share hits 10% the hackers and virus writers will be all over their systems. and when you have problems, you’ll have to go back to the geniuses who’ll give you a refurb with a different but persistent bug as means of satisfying your warranty, because you can’t get parts to do the fix yourself.

sexy packaging, but lacking in the crucial bits necessary for daily dependability… i’ve got apple products, but i rely on my windows systems for real work

What is a product with design personality in your opinion? I enjoy using all my devices from a variety of ‘families’ but I always prefer the way Apple’s products look aesthetically. Very few devices come anywhere near the style and minimalism that I enjoy from their products. Huwaei has a couple of really nice looking phones but other than that it’s kind of a crap shoot, unless it’s one of HP’s new Apple-Clones, which look nice but are essentially the same.
