Richard Mourdock Says Pregnancies Resulting From Rape Something God Intended to Happen

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (TheBlaze/AP) — Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman is impregnated during a rape, “it’s something God intended.”

Mourdock, who’s been locked in a tight race with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly, was asked during the final minutes of a debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happened,” Mourdock said.

Mourdock further clarified after the debate he did not believe God intended the rape, but that God is the only one who can create life.

“Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don’t think that,” Mourdock said. “Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that’s not even close to what I said.”

Still, his comments quickly drew criticism from Democrats, including challenger Joe Donnelly, who is locked in a tight race with Mourdock.

Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, said Tuesday in an email to The Associated Press that Mourdock’s comments “do not reflect” Romney’s views. The candidate previously endorsed Mourdock.

Mourdock’s comments come a day after a new ad featuring Romney giving his support for the GOP candidate started airing. It was the latest effort by both parties to break open the Senate race.

The race between Mourdock and Donnelly has been one of the nation’s most expensive – and most watched – Senate races since the Republican unseated veteran U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in May’s GOP primary. Mourdock’s comments come two months after embattled Missouri GOP Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said during a television interview that women’s bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called “legitimate rape.”

Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down. It was not clear what affect, if any, Mourdock’s comment might have during the final two weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

But it quickly placed the tea party-backed candidate on the defensive, one day after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came to Indianapolis for a fundraiser and after the campaign released a spot from Romney asking Hoosiers to support Mourdock.

Indiana Republican Party spokesman Pete Seat referred comment to the Mourdock campaign. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a spokeswoman for Romney did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.

National Democrats quickly picked up on Mourdock’s statement and used it as an opportunity to paint him as an extreme candidate, calling him a tea party “zealot.”

Donnelly said after the debate in southern Indiana that he doesn’t believe “my God, or any God, would intend that to happen.”

Mourdock’s ad featuring Romney started airing Monday and is the latest effort to break open the Senate race. Republicans need to gain three seats, or four if President Barack Obama wins re-election, and seats that were predicted to remain or turn Republican have grown uncertain.

Top Republicans have been flocking to Indiana. Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned for Mourdock last week, and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is due in the state Wednesday.

Romney’s coattails carry special significance in deeply conservative Indiana, where Mourdock has underperformed Romney by 12 points in most public polls. Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS also has bought another $1 million of airtime in Indiana, making his group the biggest player in Indiana’s Senate race. A message left for Crossroads GPS spokesman Nate Hodson was not immediately returned.

More recently, Mourdock, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress three times before becoming state treasurer, has been trying to woo moderate voters as Donnelly has played up his moderate, three-term voting record in the House.

  This could explain why some innosent foriegn children and mexicans are brought into the USA and left to be cast away aliens except the Dream Act might be part of God’s Plan! That would explain it, which is all I wanted to say because until now it just popped in my head that HOW COME we never heard of the Dream Act until recent days?

  @Antitheist: If you actually read the chapters you will see that God is offering to rescue Israel from the horrors visited on them by their enemies as a result of turning away from righteousness. In fact, the whole book of Hosea is this plea for Israel to return to Him.

Everybody has values and beliefs and stands for something until a situation comes along that they don’t like, or it inconveniences them, and then they make exceptions and justifications to get around it. Either be pro life or pro choice. When you’re aborting a fetus you’re either killing a human being or your ejecting a bundle of cells from a womans uterus, one or the other. It’s either a living being or its not. How that fetus came into existence has no bearing on what that fetus is. Try as I might I can’t see it any other way, regardless of how unpleasant or inconvenient it may be.

  Let’s grant, for the sake of argument that Richard Mourdock is correct about God’s plans. Why, for heaven’s sake with only two weeks left before the election, would anyone ever say something like that?
  
  I believe, personally, that killing a baby because of how it was conceived is nonsense. Either it’s a baby and needs to be protected or it’s not in which case it doesn’t need to be protected. If it’s a baby then somehow it fits into God’s plan for the baby. Was the rape God’s will, that would be hard to believe. Was the one good thing, a baby, to come out of the rape God’s will, that would be easier to believe.
  
  A lot of things happen in life where someone is traumatized and sometimes injured for life. People deal with it and often become better people because of it. A rape, as detestible as it is, if it results in a pregnency only affects the woman for 9 months. If she aborts the child, often, it affects her for the rest of her life. So, just from the perspective of the mother, let alone the baby, it is better to have the baby rather than adding a second trauma to the mother.
  
  But still, why would Mourdock say something like that two weeks before the election? You can say things in a way that are not so controversial, right? Why lose an election because of HOW you said something?

  That may be so. I think the problem we are having here is that those of us “down in the trenches” seem to have a better grasp on how important it is to take back the Senate. While what he said may be true, it could have been said in a less inflamatory manner.

Not really sure how to take Mourdock’s “God intended” comments and I don’t feel like he was clear about abortion. Just work on those talking points, man. The two things I am torn about are:

(1) If someone takes the morning after pill is that considered abortion? (I am not sure)
(2) Is euthanasia considered murder? (I’m REALLY torn about this one)

  euthanasia is not murder, it is suicide. Suicide should be legal if your are in a sane mind. We euthanize dogs to spare them the pain, but force humans to endure it. That is f’ing sick!!

  Yeah, that’s what I’m torn over – assisted suicide. I haven’t been in a nursing home for a long long time but seem to remember an overwhelming feeling of suffering and people wanting death. Personally, I’d rather not get old and be deceased at 40 yrs old or 50 yrs old.

  Also the practice of euthanasia was popular under the nazis. Before they where killing Jews they were killing the enfeebled and disabled. That kind of progressive sent image is coming back. So called “compassionate euthanasia”. Palin referred to it as “death panels”, the Emanual brothers called it something different.

  I can’t really answer you second question as it is essentially a moral question and who am I to tell you what your morals should be. Although, I do tend to agree with the PURAVIDA56.
  In re the morning after pill I can tell you that taking that particular medicine is not likely to result in an abortion. The fastest that a sperm can reach an egg is appx 30 minutes, but it most often takes much longer than that – up to 5 or six days. The morning after pill does not abort a fertilized egg, it prevents the egg from becoming fertilized much like the regular birth control pill. There are medicines that abort a fertilized egg (I believe RU486 is one, but it is not “the morning after pill), but those medicines are not what persons generally refer to when they say “the morning after pill.”

  You dim fool, sacredhonor1776… I’m not sure you know what the definition of euthanasia is in the modern world as it applies to humans … Nazis were not euthanizing disabled people… They were murdering them … They did not consent to dying .. Nor were they terminally ill and suffering … Nazis killed people just because they didn’t fit their “master race”… Pretty big difference , don’t you think? If I’m 90 years old, in intense, untreatable pain from an incurable that’s going to cause my death in the very near future, and I’m so weak I can’t even muster the strength to kill myself… And I’m of sound mind and request to die on my own terms under the care of a physician … And I fill out all the proper forms and consent… It’s called euthanasia … Not NAZISM… Please tell me you can tell the difference … One is cold blooded killing (obviously without consent), the other is mercy… I really can’t believe I have to explain that to you …

  My problem isn’t with Romney, it’s the party that he is representing who has gone absolutely INSANE the last 2-3 years.
  
  Look at them trying to pass mandatory probe ultrasounds in Virginia….and then cry about doctor patient relationships
  
  Look at them talk about small, limited government….while voting for two wars unfunded, a medicare part D unfunded, voting for the bailout and taking stimulus money
  
  Look at them cry about Chik-fil-a getting boycotted, saying a private company should be able to do what they want without fear of protest….and then protest amazon or cry “WAR ON CHRISTMAS” when a store privately chooses to wish everyone happy holidays.
  
  Look at Texas Republicans putting in their platform that they’re against teaching critical thinking skills, and removing Thomas Jefferson from the schoolbooks in favor of John Calvin.
  
  Seriously, they’ve gone nuts.

  Rape is a process of sin, and there obviously a number of stories that condemn rape in the bible. However the bible also stated that God formed the children in the womb, and knew the child before they were born.
  
  This is obviously where some religious anti-abortionists are coming from me thinks?
  
  A better argument is that in rape there can be two victims the mother and the child conceived by the rape. The child is innocent of what rapist did.

I will be voting against Richard Mourdock, because one of his campaign people put a flier on my car’s windshield, and it rained.

I doubt my vote will matter, because I’m betting he’ll win by at least 12 points. But if it does, then his fault for vandalizing my property.

  Exactly, while I agree with his answer, WHY go there?…it’s a trick question with no good answer for these type of people. Mourdock’s answer is only valid to Believers. All others will twist the answer to fit their purpose and use it against him. Can’t he just say. No more questions today.

What a moron….and a clear indication of the dangers and ignorance of religion. Not all religious people are this , this, …… evil, but the truly devout will say that rape resulting in pregnancy is ‘God’s plan’

Damn that is scary. I will vote for romney…….but his devout morman faith will make me hesitate a second in the booth. I may still vote libertarian.

  Voting libertarian is voting my conscious. Voting for Mitt is the less of two evils. I will probably vote against my ideals/ beliefs and vote for mitt…..but only because i live in a swing state!!!!!
