GOP Senate Candidate Richard Mourdock: Pregnancies Resulting From Rape ‘Something God Intended to Happen’

Richard Mourdock Says Pregnancies Resulting From Rape Something God Intended to Happen

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (TheBlaze/AP) — Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman is impregnated during a rape, “it’s something God intended.”

Mourdock, who’s been locked in a tight race with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly, was asked during the final minutes of a debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happened,” Mourdock said.

Mourdock further clarified after the debate he did not believe God intended the rape, but that God is the only one who can create life.

“Are you trying to suggest somehow that God preordained rape, no I don’t think that,” Mourdock said. “Anyone who would suggest that is just sick and twisted. No, that’s not even close to what I said.”

Still, his comments quickly drew criticism from Democrats, including challenger Joe Donnelly, who is locked in a tight race with Mourdock.

Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, said Tuesday in an email to The Associated Press that Mourdock’s comments “do not reflect” Romney’s views. The candidate previously endorsed Mourdock.

Mourdock’s comments come a day after a new ad featuring Romney giving his support for the GOP candidate started airing. It was the latest effort by both parties to break open the Senate race.

The race between Mourdock and Donnelly has been one of the nation’s most expensive – and most watched – Senate races since the Republican unseated veteran U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in May’s GOP primary. Mourdock’s comments come two months after embattled Missouri GOP Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said during a television interview that women’s bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called “legitimate rape.”

Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down. It was not clear what affect, if any, Mourdock’s comment might have during the final two weeks before the Nov. 6 election.

But it quickly placed the tea party-backed candidate on the defensive, one day after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came to Indianapolis for a fundraiser and after the campaign released a spot from Romney asking Hoosiers to support Mourdock.

Indiana Republican Party spokesman Pete Seat referred comment to the Mourdock campaign. A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and a spokeswoman for Romney did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.

National Democrats quickly picked up on Mourdock’s statement and used it as an opportunity to paint him as an extreme candidate, calling him a tea party “zealot.”

Donnelly said after the debate in southern Indiana that he doesn’t believe “my God, or any God, would intend that to happen.”

Watch video of Mourdock’s remarks here:

Mourdock’s ad featuring Romney started airing Monday and is the latest effort to break open the Senate race. Republicans need to gain three seats, or four if President Barack Obama wins re-election, and seats that were predicted to remain or turn Republican have grown uncertain.

Top Republicans have been flocking to Indiana. Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham campaigned for Mourdock last week, and New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte is due in the state Wednesday.

Romney’s coattails carry special significance in deeply conservative Indiana, where Mourdock has underperformed Romney by 12 points in most public polls. Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS also has bought another $1 million of airtime in Indiana, making his group the biggest player in Indiana’s Senate race. A message left for Crossroads GPS spokesman Nate Hodson was not immediately returned.

More recently, Mourdock, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress three times before becoming state treasurer, has been trying to woo moderate voters as Donnelly has played up his moderate, three-term voting record in the House.

Mourdock – Lacks the capacity to understand God and his dealings with men. God does not have a hand in ever act that occurs. He has established natural laws to rule our world. God has given man his agency. Unless a man turns to God for help, God will not necessarily help him.

It doesn’t take a genious to know that gravity exists. This is not God’s heavy hand pushing down on us.

It doesn’t take God’s hand to merge a sperm cell with an egg cell thereby creating conception. This is a natural law. Whether voluntary or involuntary, the egg and sperm do their thing.

Yes, God has and will continue to perform mighty miracles among men. However, to believe that every act is some how directed by him would destroy the very purpose for our being here. Without agency and the need to endure the consequences of our choices (whether good or bad), the purpose of life and role of Christ in it is frustrated.

Why should anyone rally around a guy who thinks rape is the doing of god, or at least “god’s plan”? This guy needs to be run out of town on a rail. He is a fundamentalist idiot that brings down society with his belief in fairy tales and mysticism. So, some god sits on a cloud and deems that some women shall be raped and become pregnant as that is his plan and that is good. No wonder the GOP is slowly becoming nothing more than a southern fundamentalist party. Heck, your party has become so full of nuts that you had to pull out a New England, progressive, big government, Mormon to run for President this time. Why didn’t “god’s plan” nominate Santorum or Bachmann or any other fundamentalist?

Shame on the Blaze for editing his quote out of context. I thought Beck decries this stuff. The headline would have believe he said the rape is what God intended. When you read it in context, he was saying the birth of the child is what God intended. This is NBC stuff. Glenn should fire someone over this.

There is nothing wrong with what he said. No Christian should have any issue with this. (Atheists, get bent. You are the only people who care what you think). I’ve met a woman, a nurse who is a God-fearing woman, who is a product of a rape. Did God not intend for her to be born and serve Him?

I personally think this is just another case of gotcha. Abortion because of rape or incest is a very small percentage of abortion, so it doesn’t affect the vast major of women who get abortions. Why do the media continue to try to catch the candidates with this OPINION if that is not the case. My personal opinion is that a woman who is raped while that is a terrible experience will survive it and can be helped to live a quality life afterwords with love, understanding, and counseling. A baby that is aborted for any reason will not survive!

What has happened to the the real GOP? Akin and now Mourdock. This is horrendous. Romney must disavow any connection with this man’s campaign. Any woman who votes for either of them or the GOP has lost her mind. Yes Gov, the GOP war on women continues. It”s about time you clamped down on these misogynists. You tried to come across as a moderate in the debate. Now’s the time to prove it. Tell him to resign from the race.

It’s very rare for a woman to become pregnant from rape. Less than 1% of all rape victims become pregnant as a result. It amounts to about 35 cases a year in the US. I’ve done the research.

The Bible says that “God works all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose.” All things not just the good things. Perhaps in these rare incidents he has decided to give the world a gift and let something good come out of tragedy. A child is not a punishment. One of those children could have the mind to cure cancer or diabetes or heal spinal cord injuries. How many Einsteins and Motzarts have been killed?

Also, in the case of rape, who is guilty? The child or the rapest? Perhaps the rapist should be the one to die. We can inject him and soak him in a potent saline solution until he burns inside and out and then pull his limbs off. Then, if he’s still alive, we’ll just leave him on a table or in a closet to die. That is what they do to babies when they abort them.

Really? You’ve done the research? What research is that? Here’s mine:

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical University of South Carolina

      Abstract
      OBJECTIVE:
We attempted to determine the national rape-related pregnancy rate and provide descriptive characteristics of pregnancies that result from rape.

      STUDY DESIGN:
A national probability sample of 4008 adult American women took part in a 3-year longitudinal survey that assessed the prevalence and incidence of rape and related physical and mental health outcomes.

      RESULTS:
The national rape-related pregnancy rate is 5.0% per rape among victims of reproductive age (aged 12 to 45); among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year.

But hey, you were only off by a multiple of 1000.

Now, if you’re stupid you’re stupid. You’re gonna have to live with it just like the world is gonna have to live with you. It’s the bald-faced lying that ticks me off. Unfortunately sometimes you’re both, which appears to be the case with you two.

And to think you lie to your kids like you lie to the world. No wonder this country is so screwed up.

The product of rape should not be characterized as a “gift from god”. The child could be characterized as a second innocent victim of the rapist, but putting “rape” and “gift from God” in the same paragraph is stupid, insensitive and probably ended his career.

Mourdock just killed his candidacy! He may have also endangered the GOP recovering control of the US Senate!

By that logic, Hitler’s atrocities were an act of God’s will! By that logic, every act of terror, every act of murder, every act of violence, every abuse, every drunk driving fatality, and every humanitarian crisis, is the manifestation of God’s will. That’s not true! God weeps for the things he sees humans do to each other! It is one thing to say that GOOD can come from tragic events, but it is quite another thing to say that an act of free will by a devil-inspired mortal is therefore the will of God as well. That is utterly and contemptibly FALSE!

Your logic is laughable and you are ignorant of the Bible. God has used wicked events and people all throughout the Bible to accomplish His will. If someone decides not to vote on this man based solely on what he said, they don’t believe in God or is Biblically stupid.

If you disagree with him then I would ask you, is God angry that child was born? Did the omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent God not see this one coming? Of course God did not intend for the rape to happen anymore than God intended for Judas to betray Christ. But, He knew it was going to happen and used it for His glory.

People who call themselves Christians would do well to spend some time learning basic theology.

God is not the author of evil. He does however use the wicked intentions of a fallen people to His purpose. It is not my place to kill that which He has created. I am confused by the scorn that is placed here. The man did not say that rape was a gift from God, but the life that was created was a gift from God which is standard doctrine for most Christian religions. If the man is Christian wouldn’t that be his stance?

God or no God do we believe that human life is special, or do we see it as simply animal? If it is simply animal then slavery is acceptable, dominating the weak is acceptable, murder is acceptable, eating human flesh is acceptable. The problem is that we know in our hearts this is not the case.

The problem is that we are selfish by nature and will rationalize anything for the sake of our convenience. Rape is horrific and the reminder of that rape through pregnancy would be a terrible burden to bear, but in the end the abortion is killing a human as a matter of convenience.

I will give you 5 dollars for every abortion committed because of forced rape (as apposed to concentual sex with a minor)/incestuous rape, and to save the life of the mother if you give me 1 dollar for every other abortion committed. Anyone want to take me up on this?

You are exactly right. I always go back the to Tanach and see what YHWH says about life and death. Man can not murder according to the commandments. Murder is taking an innocent life. No abortion in the case of rape. Take it up with God, He has the last word on the matter.
Now, if you want to make it legal, then you must suffer the consequences of going against the Almighty Creator.
