Charles Krauthammer Battles Bill OReilly Over Whether Current Debate System Is a Waste of Time

(Fox News)

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly invited syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer on his show Tuesday night, where the two men clashed over whether the current presidential debate system is “outdated” and a “waste of time,” which was O’Reilly’s opinion.

O’Reilly argued that the debates need moderators to ask “sharply focused” questions, instead of the laid back system that allows candidates to get by without teaching the American people anything about their positions.

Krauthammer disagreed with the host, saying the “reason of a debate is to put the two men together to see how they interact and to get some idea of what you would otherwise never know – how are they going to act when they are in a room with Vladimir or the Mullahs or negotiating with anyone else.”

O’Reilly countered by saying the debate system is “number one, out of date, number two, a waste of time” and all presidential candidates do is “spout talking points.”

“So the moderator basically is setting them up for propaganda purposes,” he added. “Yeah, you can a little body language, you can see maybe one guy getting a little annoyed form the other guy, but so what?”

Krauthammer pushed back, saying that the first debate moderated by Jim Lehrer was one of the most important U.S. presidential debates in six decades. He said Lehrer “got out of the way” and let the candidates interact.

O’Reilly then pivoted to Romney’s debate performance on Monday, asking why he didn’t go after President Obama and his administration’s handling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The current administration repeatedly blamed an anti-Muslim video for the attacks, while intelligence reports suggested as soon as 24 hours after the attack that it was terrorism. More than one month later, there is still not a clear picture of exactly what happened at the U.S. compound in Libya, where four Americans were killed.

“It isn’t Romney’s job to play journalist…His job is to get elected president of the United States,” Krauthammer rebutted.

“I just feel that the American public deserves more. They want a true leader, we need a true leader. We want to see people who basically want to right wrongs. The Libya thing is wrong, it’s wrong,” O’Reilly proclaimed. “I don’t think the governor even cared about it.”

“I don’t understand you, Bill,” Krauthammer replied. “The purpose of the debate isn’t to right wrongs.”

“But I want to vote for the person who is going right the wrongs,” the Fox News host shot back.

Wasting your vote is voting for someone you don’t believe in.
America if you want to save our country than vote for a third party candidate.
Watch the third party Presidential debates and make one of them your choice that you can believe in.

Romney and Obama are the same book with a different cover.
I myself do not trust Obama or Romney any further than I can see them. They will both turn their backs on we the people as soon as they are in office as Obama has done to us and Romney will as well.

I actually watched most of it last night. The platform was much better and while the candidates were actually miles apart on some issues they weren’t childish like what little I seen in the main debates where they’re actually very close to one another. While I disagree with most of her politics, Stein was genuine, principled and charming. At least she stood up for our rights. Gary Johnson did OK and I like his platform much more than all the rest. That last thing I noticed was the Blaze’s lack of coverage. Not an organization that wants it’s flock to be well informed now, is it?

The debates are a waste of time as neither candidate ever actually talks about what their plan is. All they do is dig at each other, like kids in high school. Who cares how they interact with each other? What are they going to do to fix the mess? Plus they leave out the third party candidates so no one ever hears what their ideas are. The two party system has sunk this country.

@NOFX, I ask you why they are ‘unknown’? If the media covered them they wouldn’t be, correct? This would seem to indicate that the corporate media is happy with our current political cluster **** of a system, no? They own the media and all the TV stations that wouldn’t air the debate. They’re lobbying for the censorship of the internet that aired the event. Sounds to me that media isn’t really on our side.

I don’t like Obama either. He’s the one that asked that the language be added to allow Americans to be detained in the first place. Then, when signing, he deflected to the other guys saying he wouldn’t use it. And finally after a federal judge ruled it unconstitutional his administration appealed the ruling. I’m mad as hell at these actions. Unfortunately the game is rigged to where we have a choice of someone that did it or someone support what he did. The only way I can think of to condemn such actions is to vote for someone that is angry about it too or abstain.

All of you 3rd, 4th and 5th party folks are missing the entire point. If you look at other kinds of races where this is allowed, they devolve into a giant morass of mud-slinging and vicious arguments. While this may be more entertaining, it isn’t better.

There are many other ideas of how to have a voting system but in the end, they are all subjective and not necessarily better or worse. If both our major political parties are as far out of step as people complaining about the lack of ’3rd Party coverage’ suggest, then those 3rd Parties would be capturing over 20% of the main steam vote… they aren’t.

Simply put, nobody is going to waste their vote on a dark horse, no matter how appealing, when either frontrunner is a viable option or when both aren’t going to crash the country.

That’s what Romney did in the last debate, showed he was all nice and stable, wouldn’t light a match to the planet and could act all grown up and presidential. That performance alone made ANY chance ANY 3rd Party candidate had go flying right out the window. Johnson should step down and endorse Romney just to make CERTAIN Obama doesn’t get re-elected. If he plays spoiler, maybe that will pander to his ego, but I can tell you, he will earn the ire of all conservatives at the same time and become a pariah like Perot.

If we have to have another 4 years of this, there won’t be anyone on the planet to bring it back to normalcy. Ron Paul should have swallowed his egotistical price and endorsed Gov Romney for president so that all the Paul bots would have followed his lead.

This is a two-party system. It always has been and always will be about two parties. There isn’t room for a third party. It won’t work. The question is yes or no, right or wrong, good or bad, true or false. The freedom is available to enable a third party to emerge, but nature will always revert back to a battle between two. Sorry boys.

Nice try is right. I understand the history of party evolution. Do I know that parties have changed? Yes. The point is that it always goes back to two. The Tories and Whigs, for instance. They might transform to something else as politics and conditions evolve, but name me a time when three or more parties have effectively coexisted? And if you pull out some nonsense like the Green Party, I’m going to throw something at you. Even the Tea Party (which isn’t a formal party) is part of the Republican Party but is striving to transform that party into something better and greater. So yes, I understand that the names change, but you will not have three parties successfully and steadily working to oppose each other.

I hope the GOP has a similar fate when all the altruist socialist security junkies die off during the financial collapse. Your party sucks. We have two parties that stand for collectivism. We need an alternative. One that will put the individual first as the founders intended. The bottom line is I wouldn’t mind if the GOP just faded away into obscurity and the Libertarians, Constitution Party or Tea Party took their spot.

I’ve watch his ego grow and grow. HE didn’t get what ROMNEY was doing at the debate yesterday…but CHAS. sure did. I hope that MITT will NOT go on O’Reilly’s before the election…after? Fine…but not before. No matter what agreement one has with O’Reilly he’ll pull out all the dirty tricks: The lower chair for the guest..the trick question impossible to answer in sound-bite and then “OOOPS” out of time. Voting for a third party candidate will not help you achieve your policy goals. Perhaps it makes you feel good, but in practical reality a “protest vote” does not influence the policy preferences of either major party. The “lesser evil” from which you withhold your protest vote does not crunch the numbers after the election and see your vote as a missed opportunity to be pursued. They crunch the numbers and put you in the “idiots we shouldn’t waste our time with” pile. This is why the Libertarian Party has never succeeded in liberalizing the GOP, but Ron Paul and Tea Party candidates running on the GOP ticket have forced the Republicans to consider more small government, libertarian policies.
You can be emotional and lob a protest vote into the wastebasket of history, or you can figure out the way the game is played and try to win it, inch by inch. Your choice.

I watched some of this exchange between these two last night. OReiley kept interrupting and asking really dumb questions while Krauthammer was trying to explain and answer in the first place. It was just a big ego trip for OReiley to belittle the whole debate process.

Krauthammer was right that if debate moderators did what OReiley asked, we would have nothing but debates like the one with Candy Krowley interrupting with the “facts” and shutting down the republican candidate. It is a much more fair process to let the candidates talk and call each other out on lies because no moderator they pick is going to be fair to both sides.

Ha no surprise, the Blaze hasnt covered anything of substance since the nomination of Romney. Fluff pieces and covering for Romneys ever changing stances has been their sole purpose since.
A great quote from Johnson tonight was
“One thing is certain, three things will continue despite which main stream candidate wins 1 The growth of the police state. 2 The expansion of wars in the middle east. 3 The increase of debt and spending.”
I probably butchered the quote but the idea is the same and anyone who has been watching the debates between the big govt candidates knows this is true. Even you blazers have to admit this is the case.

How much work should the candidates put into the debates? I don’t think much, and I think they are a waste of time anyways. Americans in general don’t know what the hell they’re watching, and they eat up punch-lines. Why spend time going into details that Americans won’t believe anyways, and with a general public that thinks about the debates from the concept of the seat they had in high school or college debate class, which wasn’t a debate for a high profile job, but a debate for the sake of debating.

Lol. As long as all Americans 18 and older can vote, America will never be fixed, ever.

Whooaaa now Blaze….. I have it on good authority from Miss Chrissy Matthews, Nurse Ratchet Madcow and the Good Reverend Sharpton that he has never apologized for anything. Including those unfortunate matters with bisexual men that will never say anything due to the Clinton “Vince Foster Amendment”.

Hell, just ask Valerie Jarret….. she knows everything.

I haven’t watched O’Bilbo in more than 4 years. He’s clueless! He’s no conservative. He’s more interested in preserving his ratings than presenting important info to Americans.
Do yourself a favor. Turn O’Reilly OFF!

Are you careful of what you say at work? If you are, then you’re watching out for your ratings too.

      @poetopoet,

On a more serious note… what am I going to do with my 1st Edition Edgar Allen Poe books complete with wax paper covered Etchings? I got them from an old used book store in St. Petersburg, Fl.

      Any clue?

Just because Romney didn’t totally attack Obama on the Benghazi issue does not mean he “doesn’t care”. Romney had a purpose during the 3rd Debate, show himself presidential and NOT a warmonger. The Dems had already started attacking him for being a warmonger, wanting war with Iran and Syria, etc. Romney’s performance eliminated that accusation. Romney showed himself presidential and Obama hung himself with his sarcasm, with his pettiness and with his total errors! Benghazi is in the news, still and the e-mails, issue with Clinton, and all the other things happening are not going to go away. Lets get Romney elected first, then we can go from there.

BARBER2, I could be wrong and might be confusing his incident with another story. Just looked it up and it was a diving accident back in ’72. Thanks for bringing that up.

      Hi RJJ,

If true, they do a good job of making it a non-issue.

      Which is very good.

If he was on MSLSD they would carry him out every day like Queen Nefertiti.

Yes — google his bio — he’s a VERY intelligent man — sharp as a tack. Not a bought and paid for ‘hack’ (for the most part) – I think of him as 1 click to the right… fair guy that can articulate his points and speak the language of nearly every ‘dialect’ in America… :-)

“Krauthammer disagreed with the host, saying the “reason of a debate is to put the two men together to see how they interact and to get some idea of what you would otherwise never know – how are they going to act when they are in a room with Vladimir or the Mullahs or negotiating with anyone else.”

Well…. we already know what BO does…. Lean Forward, bow, grab ankles, take it in the rear and apologize for the US not doing it sooner.

We also know what the Libertarian Party would do…. Go away, straighten up your own mess, get as many nukes as you want, join the free world and if you want Sharia Law… so be it. And since our borders are open…. welcome to what’s left of the USA. How may we serve you?

What will Romney do? Not any of the above I would venture.

This is why we need to vote to get our Republican Party back to its conservative roots. Barack is going to be the best thing that’s happened to the Republican Party.

I watch Bill O. I like Bill O. But Bill O isn’t quite the hotshot he seems to think he is. He’s ov mediocre intelligence and he is partially blinded by his own megalomania (word of the day?). Charles Krauthammer knocked Bill O out.

I watch it once in awhile when I wake up very early in the am and the re-runs from the night before are on, but I cannot stand his constant interruption of his guests. He never lets them speak more than 3 words before interrupting them. Since he loves hearing himself speak so much, why even bother with guests?

There is so much going on that is covered up. Russia now has a $4.2 Billion contract to supply weapons to Iraq! General Martin Dempsey has Embolden Iran Mullahs. Muslim Brotherhood-Egypt is strengthening ties to Iran and is allowing Iran to use Egyptian air space to fly weapons to Syria – and are calling for the death of all Jews. Al Qaeda Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is in Mali and enacting Shari’a law with stonings, amputations, and public beatings. “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophets teachings & jihad – Boko Haram” in Nigeria had murdered 650 Christians to date in 2012. They are linked to AQIM and share training, funds and explosives. The Taliban in Afghanistan is gaining strength. AQAP Al Qaeda Arabian Peninsula is in Yemen. The Malevolent culture of Islamic Supremacism with it’s delusional ideologies have created 0′s foreign polity and is now threatening our very security and interests while we are being crippled by abject moral poverty. We are being stripped of our dignity in airports. Churches are told not speak for fear of IRS. We are told “we did not build that” when all our tax money did build that-so now the Globalists are trying to separate us from the very government We Built to Protect Us from all enemies foreign & domestic!! God Help & Bless America and Restore our Great Republic & Help us Elect The Fierce Men We will NEED to WIN our FREEDOM once AGAIN. Please save us from Communism and Islam. Amen
