American Atheists (AA), a non-profit devoted to advancing a secular cause, has, once again, launched an anti-Mormon campaign. The organization’s new billboard in southern Florida takes specific and pointed aim at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s faith. The message, which is intended to negatively frame The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, invokes both homosexuality and race.
The billboard reads, “No Blacks Allowed. No Gays Allowed. Shame on Mormonism.” AA President David Silverman claims that the mobile ad (it’s on wheels) is an opportunity to expose what he believes is “intolerance” and “bigotry” on the part of the Mormon church (at least when it comes to the issue of homosexuality).

The first line of the ad refers to the church’s previous denial of African American priests until 1978 — a turning point at which the LDS church corrected its path. As TheBlaze has reported, the church issued an official declaration at that time following prayer and meditation and overturned the priesthood restrictions that once disallowed African American men from participating. A portion of the written description of the revelation read:
Aware of the promises made by the prophets and presidents of the Church who have preceded us that at some time, in God’s eternal plan, all of our brethren who are worthy may receive the priesthood, and witnessing the faithfulness of those from whom the priesthood has been withheld, we have pleaded long and earnestly in behalf of these, our faithful brethren, spending many hours in the Upper Room of the Temple supplicating the Lord for divine guidance.
He has heard our prayers, and by revelation has confirmed that the long-promised day has come when every faithful, worthy man in the Church may receive the holy priesthood, with power to exercise its divine authority, and enjoy with his loved ones every blessing that flows therefrom, including the blessings of the temple. Accordingly, all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color. Priesthood leaders are instructed to follow the policy of carefully interviewing all candidates for ordination to either the Aaronic or the Melchizedek Priesthood to insure that they meet the established standards for worthiness.
Relations between African Americans and the Mormon church have been evolving and improving since this statement was issued. Despite these developments, AA decided to use the issue against LDS. As for the issue of gay rights, the Mormon church strongly opposes same-sex marriage, but claims that it accepts gay members.
Silverman believes that Romney’s faith hasn’t been scrutinized enough in the media and that it deserves additional attention. That said, he denied that the billboard is specifically aimed at the candidate (the organization is a 501(c)(3) and, thus, is not permitted to endorse or rail against candidates).
“We all understand the implications of having a Christian president. We do not understand the implications of having a Mormon president,” Silverman told CNN. “We are not taking a position on the election, we are taking a stance on ignorance.”
Dale Jones, a spokesperson for the church, dismissed the ad in an email to CNN, writing, “This group seems not to know that there have been black members of the Church since our earliest history, and there are many faithful gay members of the Church today.”
This follows another AA billboard that was displayed during the conventions. This former ad called Jesus a “useless savior,” while, once again, bashing the Mormon Church.

Your “facts” are wrong, again. [sigh] Blacks have always been allowed as members, so have gays. They were not allowed to hold the priesthood until 1978. fyi, that was 34 years ago so not exactly breaking news. Since having the priesthood only = more responsibility/work without getting a single penny in reward, it is curious that ATHEISTS are so worried about it now. Savvy? No discount on tithing, no secret perks, no special parking spot, and not even a better place in heaven. Again, why do ATHEISTS even care? Zero cash advantage! Comprende? Their crocodile tears are pathetic at best.
By their fruits ye shall know them. A policy change 34 years ago is more relevant than Obama’s resume over the last 4 years? Bizarre to say the least.

Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion or prohibit the free exercice there of.
If any religion doesn’t want to allow african, european, asian or latinoes …..THEY HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO DO JUST THAT.
Maybe they don’t want to allow gays.or maybe they want only gays the Constitution allows them that right. And no law can legally be placed to change it. If the moroms were the only religion availible then denying them some from joining could be seen as infringement even then the Constitution stands with the moroms. But there are tons of other religion.
And that doesn’t just go for Religion the whole right to service legislation is Bullcrap as well. So practices alone are not an indication to being a Christian but a belief in Jesus Christ, correct? The same early Christian Church which gave you the three persons yet one God formula is the same of Origen pertained to. Origen, the guy who affirmed on trial that there were “two Gods” which is a direct no-no according to the trinitarian creeds. Was he Christian?
Here’s my response to you regarding “being a mormon”. Yes, you can have a different perception of Joseph Smith than I and still be a Mormon. Many LDS, for example, believe in the King Follett Discourse, I don’t though I did at one time. My change in view on the divine inspiration of those teachings did not affect my standing inthe LDS faith one bit. But what you’re doing is hyperbolizing Joseph Smith by purposfully declaring things which have no validity whatsoever. Now, if you honestly think and feel that the Holy Spirit has told you such nonesense is true, than who am I to say otherwise? I won’t agree with you but nor will I say you’re not a Mormon because of it. On the previous thread we dialogued, it was pointed out to you that it is your belief in the Book of Mormon which makes you Mormon, not your belief in Joseph Smith.

Now, my purpose in asking you questions about prayer is to point out that there are different practices as well as different ways to come unto the Jesus of the Bible. A prime example here is that you definitely believe in sola fide (faith alone) in Jesus that saves, correct? That including works being needed for salvation denies the grace of God. Also correct? Well Catholics believe in faith + works = salvation by grace alone. They believe that faith is only the first step which leads an individual to take of the holy sacraments which in turn accesses the individual to God’s grace which is His alone to give.
Are they Christian? They most definitely do NOT believe in the same road to salvation as you do.
As for God being only one (numeric God), nothing can be further from the truth biblically speaking. You will not find one passage which uses the Greek “monos” to declare the Godhead’s oness. Nore would you find wny Hebrew equivalent (“yachid”). “Monos” and “yachid” are only respective words in Greek and Hebrew which strictly mean numerically one.
I find you a prime example of how so focused Christianity has become to be considered “monotheists” that many in Christianity has lost focus on the biblical meaning of “one” and have elevated the dogma of monotheism above that of biblical doctrine.
Mormonism simply restores the true nature of the Godhead.

“How many gods do you worship?”
And thus the crux of the fact that you place dogma over doctrine. If I were to say “two” you would say that I’m polytheistic and thus I do not worship the Jesus of the Bible. You would say that you are monotheistic and thus follow the true God of the Bible.
“And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is one God, without end. Amen.” (2 Nephi 31:21); “and shall be brought and be arraigned before the bar of Christ the Son, and God the Father, and the Holy Spirit, which is one Eternal God, to be judged according to their works…” (Alma 11:44)
As you can see, I worship “one God”. I only disagree with you on what “one” means. You say this means “monos” and I say the Bible never uses monos, nor yachid, to speak of the oness ofthe Godhead. NEVER. Thus your absolute certainty that the God of the Bible is numerically one is without biblical foundation. It is post biblical creeds based upon hellonistic philosphy which declares such a thing. Yet I do not at all deny you are a Christian. Not in the slightest. Nor does the LDS Church.
“3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” (John 17) – “Only” = “monon”. That’s true monotheism.

The reason that Mormons are not consddered Christians is that they believe that Almighty God is flesh and blood and that HE was once like us. The Bible says otherwise. It tells us that God is spirit and that He has no beginning and no end. It also tells He is unchanging and rock solid stable.

I’ve been an active LDS member my entire 41 years of mortal living. I’ve attended wards (LDS congregations) in a few states, several cities and in two continents. The LDS Church does not teach that God the Father was once a man like us. Period. You will find some LDS who believe that as an idea. And frankly if it’s true, I’m fine with it. But, likewise, if it’s not true, I’m fine with that as well. Either way it does not change the fact that there is NO LDS official doctrine which says that God the Father was once a man like us. The father was “in the beginning” and is the Great Creator of all things. That’s all anyone knows for sure and that’s all that’s officially believed to be true.
Saying God is a spirit does not exclude corporeality. Afterall you and I are spirit as well.

The LDS believe that Jesus was created by the Father. However, the LDS do not believe in ex nihilo and therefore Jesus was not created “out of nothing”. Jesus is just as eternal as the Father. the LDS also believe that Jesus was “like unto God” in the beginning.

Oct. 24, 2012 at 1:51pmWith due respect to all who have formed opinions based on antagonistic caricatures of Mormon history, your opinion is based on half truths pulled out of context. The Mormon Church, from its beginnings upheld a doctrine that all men, regardless of color, nation or creed are children of God and are entitled to liberty. Joseph Smith openly decried slavery and ran for President on an abolitionist platform. It was largely the Anti-slavery sentiments of Mormons that drove the hateful, unlawful persecution of them by Midwest states – giving legal cover to those who killed, raped, and stole their homes and property and drove them from the Midwest. The anti-Mormon sentiment in Missouri was motivated by Missouri’s pro-slavery majority’s fear that this rapidly growing anti-slavery religion would soon have sufficient votes to upset the status quo. They successfully convinced the state Governor to issue the infamous, illegal, and unconstitutional Mormon Extermination Order. The refusal by Washington to provide injunctive relief made the federal government complicit with this murderous order enacted to rid Missouri of the anti-slavery Mormons. Denial of Priesthood Obligations to Blacks was, in my opinion, a statement about the grossly unjust and debilitating constraints imposed by a wicked society that prevented Blacks from being freely able to comply with solemn obligations that come with the priesthood – see my other post for details.

Oct. 24, 2012 at 1:53pmIf the church doesn’t have the priesthood, and is a fraud, then it withheld nothing of any consequence; but if the church is what it claims to be – a restoration of real divine authority by embodied beings from the heavens that visited the earth – then the policy regarding preparatory eligibility for the Priesthood was divinely sanctioned. My view: the real reason that the Priesthood was withheld from Blacks was never a statement on the value of Blacks in God’s or the Church’s eyes, but rather a condemnation of the society and culture in which they resided and that actively interfered with Blacks’ ability to fully live up to the covenant obligations incurred by those who are ordained. Our doctrine teaches that the Priesthood is less a privilege than a solemn obligation with dire consequences to those who fail to live up to its exacting requirements. Blacks up until recently lived under such prejudicial restrictions, injustice and cultural handicaps, that it would have been unmerciful and unjust to demand they comply with those priesthood obligations. By church doctrine, all Black men, denied the priesthood prior to 1978, still have full access to all the blessings and privileges afforded to anyone in the post-mortal existence. On the other hand, those who were eligible, but refused to accept those priesthood obligations will remain under condemnation. Unlike many churches, we believe that God’s grace covers all who lacked privilege or opportunity during mortal

Oct. 23, 2012 at 9:35amThe majority of blacks in this country still choose to attend church with other blacks. Segregation is a natural tendency in any race, especially in times from the days of slavery to the time when this country was fresh out of the racially-tense civil rights days. For the most part, blacks weren’t ready to receive and whites weren’t ready to have black leadership at that time. That may have been partly due to prejudice and partly due to that fact that society made it difficulty for the black race to rise up to those leadership roles. I can hardly expect an atheist organization to try to see God’s will in anything, especially issues of race. And you can point to the bible for guidance on ****’s, but that doesn’t hold much weight with an atheist either.

Please remember that you said that, when I remind you later…
Some of us claiming to be Christians don’t celebrate Christmas or Easter. We believe they are pagan holidays which the RCC whitewashed with Christian themes. They told the pagans they must be Christians or “off with your head” but they couldn’t stop the pagans from worshiping their idols. Most Christians don’t have any idea where the notion of magic elves and flying reindeer came from or what colored eggs have to do with Jesus. Nothing, in fact. They are pagan symbols and rituals.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 11:04amBerean, yes, . . . they are mostly pagan in origin. However, . . . most people celebrate in their own way. I’m agnostic, but still like hearing many of the traditional christmas songs. I don’t agree with the “virgin birth”, or “savior child”, . . . . but I still enjoy much of that which is the actual religious aspects of christmas. Mostly, christmas is more about families getting together to enjoy the company and to be benevolent. Easter I don’t celebrate. I don’t find “a bloody sacrifice” to be anything but evil [the "good friday" aspect]. I don’t see any reason to accept the claims of “a risen savior who takes away sins of those who merely believe it, . . . damning the rest to hell”.
Having said that, . . . celebrating or not should be [and is] left up to the individual. Even though these two holidays were based on pagan origins, they can be excellent family occasions, . . . and that is a good thing! :-)

They are completely pagan in origin and I’m not so sure Christians should celebrate them.
Eph 5:1 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”
Exo 23:24 You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor follow their practices, but you shall utterly overthrow them and demolish their pillars.”
Lev 18: 1Yahweh said to Moses, 2″Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘I am Yahweh your God. 3You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived: and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you; neither shall you walk in their statutes. 4You shall do my ordinances, and you shall keep my statutes, and walk in them: I am Yahweh your God. 5You shall therefore keep my statutes and my ordinances; which if a man does, he shall live in them: I am Yahweh.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 12:43pmBerean, . . . this is the danger of “fanaticism”. Celebrating christmas . . . or having an “easter egg hunt” isn’t “darkness” or “bowing down to other gods” anymore. These things have transformed into something completely different than when the church attempted to draw in pagan people. For the most part, people just enjoy the family time [like at Thankgiving]. And in order TO “worship other gods”, you have to do so knowingly. Enjoying the lights of a christmas tree or buying candy with pastel colors on them is SO far from “pagan worship” that no christian should worry about it. Just my opinion.
Now, having said that, pagans are not “evil” or “dark” in themselves. I know a few and they are no different than the christian. . . . . they just have a different belief system. Neither side has credible evidence to show their side as “right” and the other as “wrong”. That’s one of the reason why I am agnostic. There MAY be deities out there. But I refuse to believe what others tell me to believe, just because it may have ancient texts. People have been. . . and are often. . . quite wrong about such things.
Anyway, I see christmas as a family time only. I don’t worship anything during that time.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 1:19pmThe name Easter itself is derived from the English pronunciation of the pagan goddess Ishtar, and the traditions are not Christian but pagan.
There are several pagan gods associated with Ishtar and account for the rabbits, hot crossed buns and ham traditions. “Ishtar” was a day that commemorated the resurrection of the god they called “Tammuz”, who was believed to be the only begotten son of the moon-goddess Ishtar and the sun-god Ba’al.
Ishtar was celebrated with colored eggs symbolic of the giant “moon egg” that she came down from the moon in; rabbits, because Tammuz was fond of them; the letter “T” (worshippers were to meditate upon the sacred mysteries of Ba’al and Tammuz, and to make the sign of the “T” in front of their hearts as they worshipped). They also ate sacred cakes with the marking of a “T” or cross on the top, and that’s where the hot crossed buns tradition came from.
Pigs are represented by the Easter ham and commemorate the life of Tammuz, Ba’al’s son who was killed by a wild pig.
A celebration of Christ’s Resurrection (which incidentally the first church did not celebrate) was merely tacked on to all these pagan symbolic traditions by the Roman Catholic Church, as a means of getting the pagans to come to church on those pagan holidays. Unfortunately this also allowed pagan traditions to become accepted as valid Christian practices, clearly in violation of the teachings of Scripture.
That’s my rub. Suit yourself.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 1:41pmBerean, I am aware of the back story of easter. Again, I don’t celebrate that holiday. I may eat the eggs my sister colors with her kids [my sister is a christain and sends her kids to christian school], but they aren’t doing anything other than “having fun coloring eggs”. They are not invoking the image of Ishtar to worship that goddess. It’s just a fun thing to do. A family thing. Same with christmas. No pagan gods or goddesses being worshipped any longer.
Having said that, . . . I’d be all FOR the goddess Ishtar visiting me in person. At least that would make ONE deity with the fortitude to actually make itself known to me.

No One questions their rights to do this. If this is the land of the Free ( like the Rhetoric claims) we should be able to follow our beliefs , to exclude segments of the populist that we do not belong in our beliefs. For instance should a church be allowed to exclude pedophiles? I belief most of us would say yes. Even if the evolution were slightly attempted as allowing them to be members, 2 Neph chp 5 vs 23 would explain why black men would be the last to be allowed multiple wives for obvious reasons.
Just check the different campuses and compounds around this country and telll me other wise. How many 30, 40, 50 year old black elders have 5, 6, 7 young pretty wives ranging from the ages of 9 – 15?
Then at the very least, the evolution would show then that population of blacks wouldn’t be 12% of the U.S. populations anymore.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 10:24am@ willingtoupe, Your ‘facts’ seemed a bit off so I looked it up. Do you seriously want to use those scriptures? If you read the whole chapter and not nit pick you would learn that the actually brother (and his children) of the prophet was against god and sinners hence they were cursed. By the way if I remember correctly I believe the same punishment was given to Cain. And if you read on:
24 And because of their acursing which was upon them they did become an bidle people, full of mischief and subtlety, and did seek in the wilderness for beasts of prey.
25 And the Lord God said unto me: They shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to astir them up in remembrance of me; and inasmuch as they will not remember me, and hearken unto my words, they shall scourge them even unto destruction.
So even after their curse they refused to repent and as in most christian doctrine they have the chance to repent, which there descendants did throughout the book of Mormon.
All in all the scriptures that you pointed out were not doctrine but a history of what happened to sinners and like most doctrine if you come unto Christ you shall be saved and the sinners will be punished.
Next time learn the whole story (which I did in five minutes with an internet search) or you are just going to look like a fool.

I don’t endorse Mormonism’s hesitation to adjust to social culture but think it’s fair to point out that they weren’t alone in their practices of discrimination. Many sub-cultures are slow to evolve, regardless of their political or religious affiliation… There’s nothing unique about bias and plenty of blame to go around.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 9:55amSure, I give them credit for evolving. But 1978??
That’s a snail’s pace. Sounds less like “evolving” and more like being pressured unwillingly.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 10:02amEvolution, both social and physical, does happen at a snail’s pace. You would be surprised at the list of groups that adhered to legislated and institutional bias. Check out Wiki’s list of black “firsts”…

Oct. 23, 2012 at 10:03amTo all those of you who like to bash the Mormons (especially you, Etch) thank you so much for being so misinformed and spreading your lies and half truths, because everytime you do that, three or four people ( who read the Blaze) come to me, a Mormon, to find out the truth or to clarify a half truth. Your efforts to to discredit our church has done more good than harm, and has assisted greatly in spreading the word about The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. This Mormon thanks you from the bottom of my heart. The only sad thing about this whole situation is that you, Etch, will probably never know the truth, simply because you are too busy condemning others.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 10:19amEastinfection, thanks for that link. I checked it out. Obviously, there are lots of back people who had a “first,” but I didn’t see any “allowed.”
There’s a big difference between being say, the first black president, and being allowed to be president.
I’m sure you can see the distinction.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 3:38pmthe Muslim brotherhood and the New Black panter party have how many whites in it? Now matter what, no matter who, there are ALWAYS, RACIST calling out groups for being “racist”… so, if Mormons allowed everybody no matter what, how many would have joined? that is a good question, because most likely non (I know, there is the argument of we will never know) but its always funny there is one side (L) always pointing out that ANYBODY not following their drum beat is a racist, JUST LOOK, LOOK AT THEM they yell, but then if you look hard enough at history it is usually the other side that is actually the side on the correct side of history.. SO, I wonder how many blacks would have joined when the Mormons had a death warrant on their heads? I don’t see ANYBODY pointing out the fact that these people had a bounty on them in order to rid a state of them… but then, that won’t fit anybodys agenda. I wonder why nobody calls out the congressional black caucus for racism, when Steve Cohen applied in 2007 they refused him solely on the color of his skin… where is the outrage? Oh, THAT’S RIGHT, Blacks can NEVER be called RACIST, that is why most of them (NOT ALL, there are good people out there) but my thoughts are those that throw the race card first usually ARE THE RACIST. otherwise they would raise a ruckus about ALL racist organizations, not just the ones that fit their agenda… that fit your debate?

Oct. 23, 2012 at 8:50amAlso forgot to say that BLACKS IN THE WHITE HOUSE have been there since the beginning, and knowing some wonderfully creative, deeply spiritual persons of color, I would say that their advice and counsel has been well received in OUR HOUSE and put to good use. Truth be told, I’d bet some of the best quotes and higher actions have come from the wisdom these precious children of GOD have shared with leaders of this last bastion of light and hope and truth. That includes all but the current leadership, which unfortunately for all has exploited the color of his skin to the detriment of all.

Oct. 23, 2012 at 11:25amI used to argue that Mormons and Christians and Muslims believe in different Gods, but I’m thinking lately that perhaps we all DO believe in the same God, since there is only One God. Could it be that we just worship Him in different ways?
That is problematic in that, if we don’t worship Him in the way He has instructed us to worship Him, we are worshiping idols.
