Does a Presidential Candidates Faith Really Matter? | Obama, Romney

Last week, TheBlaze and Patheos, the interactive faith portal, brought you an exploration covering what’s right — and wrong — about the role of religion in politics today. This week, the same diverse faith panel explores whether a political candidate’s religious adherence really matters.

While some will suggest that candidate’s personal beliefs aren’t important, others hold on to the notion that a politician’s personal convictions are essential to understanding his or her character (and, thus, whether he or she is worthy of electoral support). Regardless of where one stands, the role of religion in contemporary politics is undeniable.

Consider the furor and debate that unfolded after the Democratic Party removed references to “God” and pro-Israel sentiment from its official platform. And who could ignore the constant chatter about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith (or Obama’s past allegiance to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his unconventional faith views)?

Clearly, faith still plays an important — and an often divisive — role in politics. Here are some perspectives surrounding this important subject:

Patheos’ Timothy Dalrymple’s Take: Most people, when pressed, will acknowledge that there comes a point where a candidate’s religious beliefs will cause them to sour on his candidacy. We might prefer a competent Elvis-worshiper to an incompetent Christian, but we might still prefer a competent Christian to a competent Elvis-worshiper. And an atheist might well prefer a competent atheist to a competent Christian.

This is neither unconstitutional nor unreasonable. To prohibit the government from imposing a “religious test” is obviously not to require individual voters to ignore candidates’ religious beliefs in the voting booth. The religious beliefs of our candidates do not concern me. Objectively, they are all equally ridiculous and equally untrue. What does matter is integrity, consistency, and a belief in our Constitution and personal liberty. Republicans love to claim they are the party of small government and conservatism, but they are just as liberal as democrats, where it concerns them. When it comes to killing poor, brown people around the world and legislating what people do in their bedrooms, Republicans are all about big government. For the Party supposedly aligning themselves with God and morality, no one but pornstars talk about sex as much as Republicans do. Leave these social issues to individuals, treat people like grown-up human beings instead of cattle that needs “guiding,” and you’d get a lot of support from people disillusioned with Obama and pseudo-liberals across the country.

  Christianity is the only religion with fulfilled prophecy. Jesus fulfilled over 300 specific predictions about Him that were written 700+ years before He was born.

  It is true, the Bible is the ONLY book in the world that shows man how he can live in RIGHTEOUSNESS through a SAVIOR, who sacrificed his life for ours. No other religion has a sacrificial lamb (Jesus), because it took Jesus to do this before God would even accept the forgiveness of sins. That is why the New Testament states that THERE IS NO NEED FOR PRIESTS ANYMORE (hint: Catholics). JESUS IS OUR HIGH PRIEST, IF WE ACCEPT HIM AS OUR PERSONAL SAVIOR.
  
  So, it proves that ALL OTHER religious doctrines are heresies and evil in the eyes of God.
  IF JESUS IS NOT THE CENTER OF THE RELIGION, IT IS OF SATAN.

  If you are talking about having a well oiled infrastructure, strong military, courts enforcing current laws, social programs for those in need, not socialism, cutting back on programs and laws that take away our freedoms of law abiding citizens, re-writing NAFTA and bring back need for manufacturing in the U.S., ending the use of S.S.I. as a general fund, re-directing security along our borders and support our police officers and not tie them down so they cannot do their jobs, and imply that with freedom comes responsibility, and a belief in a higher power, then, yes I am a Republican.

  Romans 10:14 extolls the need for preachers; not priests necessarily, but people from whom others can learn about God, Jesus, salvation, etc.
  
  I also have to agree with TCBARNABAS. ‘Absolute’ truth with regards to religion is somewhat an oxymoron. We cannot prove, without any equivocation or doubt, that God exists. Thus, any claim to absolute truth regarding God (Allah, Shiva, Zeus etc) is immediately fallacious from a logical standpoint. It may be absolutely true for you, but remains, in fact, a manner of feeling or belief based entirely on faith.

  Evil begats evil. Those at Westboro are not TRUE FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST. Because if they really KNEW and BELIEVED WHAT JESUS SAID, they would never JUDGE MILITARY PERSONNEL AFTER THEY DIE. That is for God to do. What they should do is READ THE BIBLE THOROUGHLY, ESPECIALLY THE WORDS IN RED, THEN PRAY FOR FORGIVENESS AND ASK THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT ONCE AGAIN FILL THEM WITH THE LOVE OF GOD.

  Only 1/4 of all Christians voted in the last presidential election. Christians need to turn out in this election and vote for the candidate/party that will best allow us to freely practice our faith. I think it’s quite simple, if Christians turn out in this election our voices will be loudly heard as judgement is inevitable.

  I would never vote for a muslim. Islam (submission) is anti Constitution. Islam is a political system. Deceiving your neighbors with the pretend peace and tolerance, then an ultimatum to join or die. If they need you then you pay a tax as a non believer. It is just way to control people and bring in revenue. A kind of slave trade. Even liberals would balk at the treatment of women and the death of gays. Not tolerant. Its a barbaric feudal political system. They cannot separate Shariah law from pretend worship.

  Religion matters. It is shared values. I want to vote for someone who shares the Judeo-Christian values I trust. I would never vote for a Muslim. Islam (submission) shares no values with me or with this country. It is a political system. Non muslims either convert, pay a tax, or die. Sometimes they pay the tax and still die. It is a way to control a population, exact punishments, and generate revenue. Even liberals would take issue with the treatment of women and gays. What is purported to be religion is countered by the inability to separate it from Shariah law.

Of course a candidate’s religion matters! However, it just depends on WHICH religion it is. If it is a religion based in goodness, love, etc., then I’m not too picky; but if the candidate is a Devil worshipper – no way!

  i recall a big fuss about John Kennedy being catholic. some people feared the pope could dictate policy to the president. he, of course, was elected anyway. as to Romney and Mormonism…at least they’re christian. i simply cannot believe obama is anything other than a muslim. islam is not acceptable. it is a form of religious tyranny.

  What sane person would vote for a Muslim? Well, the majority of voters in 2008 did so the answer to your question is 1. There were all crazy; 2. They were all Muslim; 3.   Polarized, I don’t accept your claim to “just want to know more about it”. Why then make a public posting of things we consider sacred? Seems more like the need to “mock God” and indict Romney like the video does.
  
  Do you think there is a reason Jesus said don’t throw your pearls before swine? What are the pearls and who are the swine? Let’s suppose that blood sacrifice was still a ritual performed in temples. Wouldn’t that make a great video and something to tie to Mitt Romney. I can see it now, not only does he like to tie his dog to the top of his car but he loves to torture and slit the throats of animals. How about Abraham who Jesus said sits on his thrown? Yet he was very close to taking the life of his son Isaac.
  
  So what is it you really want to know? Mormons were never told to do God’s vengeance but just pray for him to do what he said he will do. What do you think the second coming is all about? God will come and burn all the wicked. For us is to endure and forgive. Still we can not and will not complacently allow wickedness to flourish and where self defense is called for we are not only justified in protecting ourselves and loved ones but would be held guilty if we did not.

  Actually JOEL i’m asking for my own purpose, in fact i’m interested in Mormonism & i got the above information from another poster here the other day.& since this article came up i thought i would ask a few questions. like i said ..I’m interested & would like to know more before taking further steps
  since i live in a very rural area i find the internet helpful with talking to people, i otherwise would have to travel 100′s of miles …………..
  
  i don’t think it will harm Romney since i believe everyone has made up their mind already…But i’ll admit, i wish i knew a little more about him, for these are very dangerous times…agree ?

  POLARIZED AMERICA, in that case I can accept your claim. As a Mormon I would ask that you not republish what others whose motives are not so good have published. I hope my response helped you understand at least a small amount. I believe Romney is a great person and would be a president we could finally be proud of.   Anyone who can get elected in Massachusetts is certainly not perfect. To his credit I think he might not have been re-elected and maybe for that reason didn’t run for a second term. My first choice was Michelle Bachman but I think these times require the financial expertise of Mitt Romney.

America has apparently woke up.. wasn’t it just a few months ago, a poll was taken on whether it is important that a president has religion.. I was horrified with the answer. Most everybody said it wasn’t important. I am glad people are waking up. Now pray harder than you ever have in your life.. pray for Romney to win.. pray that Obama and his administration is brought to justice! Its disgusting that Clinton said not to believe a Facebook posting yet wasn’t it this administration who did just that with a certain serviceman who was thrown out of the service.. Yet we aren’t suppose to believe them now! How very hypocritical!

To me, I don’t care what they believe, so long as 1. they live a moral and ethical life, 2. they uphold the Constitution, and 3. they are honest about what they believe. I don’t like liars, and that’s one reason why I don’t like Obama.

  Never heard of this in 50 years….however, I know the FLDS has a blood oath…the word prophets is a giveaway that it is manufactured. Only one prophet has been martyred. Move on, nothing to worry about. If someone tells you it is not relevant and it is not taught, believe them.

  I’ve been LDS all my 55 years and never had to take that oath, never been taught that, and never had to teach it to my kids. So I would assume that the 3rd and 4th generations have already passed since Joseph Smith and his brother were murdered while supposedly under the protective care of the state. After those murders the rest of the church including very innocent children were driven from their homes and from the country causing many to die due to hardships. That included some of my own ancestors.
  
  But how is that different than what you find in the Book of Revelation?

  JOEL228… Revelations deals with the End Time and second coming of Jesus Christ. The end time is the tribulation period which is about to start very soon. Their deaths, as tragic as it was, are not part of what was prophesied in Revelation. That is yet to come and it will be in our generation.

  PAXINVERITATE, the reason I posted those scriptures was not to claim it prophesied the murders of Joseph Smith and his brother (though now that you mention it I believe it applies to them and many others). It was to show to Polarized that the prayer to avenge murders was not just something that I assume was taught to early church members. Mormons are and always have been a peaceful people (unlike another religion causing problems all over the world). I have no doubt that Obama would have loved to get Romney to say something in the last debate to take out of context and place in an ad to scare people out of voting for him.
  
  As far as the Book of Revelation goes John deals not only with the end time but speaks of things ranging from before the creation of the earth (Lucifer was cast out of heaven – in a war there) until the end after the next millennium when it becomes a celestialized “sea of glass” of which it’s also said the “meek” will inherit.

  I am 5 generation on both sides of my family and I have never heard of it and I love researching all the stuff that was said back in the 1830 and 1840. We have to remember society was a lot different back then. They did things we would think silly now. Also some words meant something totally different back then.

  For LibertyG, 100 years ago, anti mormons were claiming these exact words were part of the Temple ceremony. I read it twenty five years ago in an early church publication, the Era, published sometime between 1906 and 1910. It was denied then, and is denied now. It isn’t part of the Temple ordinances today, either.

  I signed up to respond to this post. I am not a Mormon, I am an Evangelical Christian. Four years ago I thought I could never vote for a Mormon when Romney was running the first time. However this stance was based on misinformation. I read a lot about Mormonism since then, I visited a Mormon church for Sunday services on numerous occasions. I talked with several members and the Bishop who were all kind and open and truthful in their responses. I went to a funeral service as well. There was nothing weird, no red flags and no one tried to “convert me”. I saw every race in the cogregation, I saw many interracial marriages and children, I saw many children that were adopted. I saw many single men and women. I am not “afraid” of Mormons, I don’t believe all that they believe but they do believe a lot that is mainstream Christianity. They have wonderful family values, sense of giving, sense of community. Indepth reading exposed the differences between FLDS and LDS. They are quite different and should not be confused. Very very different.
  
  As a Christian I could never vote for a Muslim!

  The thought that our rights come from a higher authority than man doesn’t necessarily mean a creator. Believing our rights come from our humanity or natural law is essentially the same thing. That being said, I agree with your basic premise, which is why I can’t vote either of the two major candidates.

Religious faith obviously matters in an election. In a perfect world, it would not. But in a perfect world, everyone would be a moral person committing to doing no wrong.

Now, to each individual, the extent to which it matters varies greatly. Looking at the pole above, less than 20% of the polled (currently) would vote for an atheist. Less than 10% would vote for a Muslim. That means that if the next Republic candidate happens to be an atheist, ignoring all other issues, 80% of the people here would either vote Democrat, vote a third party, or stay home.

I think that’s completely moronic. I know plenty of atheists who make better decisions than Christians, moral or not. I’m not voting for religious guidance: I’m voting for a president. I have issues with Mitt Romney, but his faith has never, EVER been one of them.

  I did vote for Harry Truman, Dwight David Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Geo. H.W. Bush X2, Geo. W. Bush and last I am not sure he is a Christian, was John McCain. Now whether they were good presidents I will leave to history, if we have any left after this election.

C’mon Rebecca Hamilton. Faith can’t be faked? I submit it can. Satan does a very good job at it. Unfortunately, he was foiled by Jesus Christ. Man, being so inferior, does not have the Satanic ability to do so, or does he? Rebecca, Faith is displayed in your actions, the way you treat others.This can definitely be faked. A trip to a basically closed soup kitchen to wash a few dishes is a way to fake your faith. To change your views when it is appropriate, as Romney does. that is faith?

You can’t trust a Muslim. There are others that can’t be trusted; but first and foremost a Muslim is non starter with me because of the their religious tenets. Other religions come to mind but in this day and age Islam is the greatest and most ominous threat to world in general.

islam is not a religion but it disguises itself as one…it s better termed an ideology, a world view, that includes a belief in allah (not The G-d of Israel!) and islam runs counter to every other culture on earth….it forbids music, forbids smiling in public, forbids everything an imam or morals police person wants it to say. Its books are full of contradictions and much of the koran is called satanic verses because it is sa-tan speaking… muslims are not allowed to read or quote these verses…and the nullification theory allows a muslim to den y anything you may bring up fdreiftly from the koran, saying that is a nullified verse…funny they never nullify “kill the Jews (pigs) and Christians (apes.)”

one must never allow muslims to enter government or that government will be rife with those who seek its destruction…I recall that to get a permanenet visa in the USA, one must sign papers saying he has never belonged to a group advocating the violent overthrow of the US Government..that would AUTOMATICALLY exclude ALL muslims.

  This is a very ignorant comment. There are as many versions of Islam as there are of Christianity. Some vary little in doctrine but fix on one or two verses to differentiate themselves from the religion as a whole, some are markedly different from the mainstream. The more peaceful sects of Islam, the ones who actually believe the parts of the Koran that tell them to forgive their enemies , are being systematically destroyed by the ones that make up CAIR and those with a Wahabi bent. The leader of the Ahamadi sect , for example, whose motto is “Love towards all” has been targeted for murder and must have body guards and a bullet proof car when he travels. The leader wrote a book when the Wahabi movement was just gaining momentum called “Murder in the Name of Allah” which warned the Muslim world of the threat of this interpretation of Islam. The head of the Submitters, also a very peaceful and loving group of people, was murdered in their mosque in Tucson. You can imagiine how despairing these Muslims are to see the violent groups now defining Islam for the world. As Christians, we have a duty to seek out these folk and give them a voice, not lump all under the same rubric.

If you have morals. If you have convictions. If you understand that right and wrong are real, and put them ABOVE and BEFORE party loyalty, then yes…it matters.

If you are, essentially, a godless democrat, then it matters to the extent that if you are a religious republican, you will never be approved. However, you can be a child killing satan worshipper with a (D) after your name, and they will vote for you with smiles on their faces.

Democrats don’t care that Clinton lied about Lewinsky. That he lied to Congress. He was a democrat.
Democrats don’t care that Obama has lied about Fast & Furious or Benghazi. He is a democrat.

Iran/Contra was big because it was about right and wrong. Benghazi is equal to iran/contra, and nobody but those with convictions and integrity even care.
