Emails: White House Told Two Hours After Benghazi Attack Began That Radical Islamic Group Claimed Responsibility

Emails Show Ansar al Sharia Claimed Responsibilty for Benghazi Attack Within Two Hours

UPDATE: The White House responded to the emails Wednesday, with press secretary Jay Carney saying “there was a variety of information coming in.”

White House and State Department officials were informed just two hours after the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on Sept. 11 began that a radical Islamic militant group had claimed responsibility, according to official emails obtained by Reuters.

The emails, reportedly put out by the State Department, specifically mention that the Libyan militant group Ansar al-Sharia had taken credit for the attack almost immediately and called for additional terrorist acts.

The correspondence provides a glimpse into how U.S. diplomats described the fiery assault, as it was happening, to officials in Washington, D.C.

The terrorist attack claimed the lives of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, including two former Navy SEALs and a State Department official. It took the Obama administration nearly two weeks to completely rule out an anti-Muslim video as the cause of the attack.

Numerous Obama administration officials, including White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and even Obama himself, went on TV at different times and told millions of American citizens that the attacks were due to a spontaneous protest sparked by the video. Now it has been uncovered that the administration knew within hours that a terrorist group had proudly admitted they attacked the U.S. compound.

Reuters has the details on the emails sent to the various Obama administration officials:

The first email, timed at 4:05 p.m. Washington time – or 10:05 p.m. Benghazi time, 20-30 minutes after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission allegedly began – carried the subject line “U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack” and the notation “SBU”, meaning “Sensitive But Unclassified.”

The text said the State Department’s regional security office had reported that the diplomatic mission in Benghazi was “under attack. Embassy in Tripoli reports approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well.”

A second email, headed “Update 1: U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi” and timed 4:54 p.m. Washington time, said that the Embassy in Tripoli had reported that “the firing at the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi had stopped and the compound had been cleared.” It said a “response team” was at the site attempting to locate missing personnel.

A third email, also marked SBU and sent at 6:07 p.m. Washington time, carried the subject line: “Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack.”

The message reported: “Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli.”

Fox News reports that the emails were sent to a “variety of national security platforms, whose addresses have been redacted, including the White House Situation Room, the Pentagon, the FBI and the Director of National Intelligence.”

Additionally, sources told Fox News that around 300 to 400 national security officials received the emails “in real time.” The officials on the email recipient list work under the nation’s top national security, military and diplomatic officials, according to sources.

The revelation, if confirmed to be legitimate, also calls into question why President Obama decided to take off on campaign trip to Las Vegas if his State Department the day before informed his national security team that a group of radical Islamic terrorists was claiming responsibility for killing four Americans.

The other question that demands answering is whether the U.S. military could have intervened if the White House knew two hours after the seven hour attack began that a terrorist group was overwhelming the U.S. Consulate, putting the lives of Americans in danger.

CBS News’ Sharyl Attkisson reports:

CBS News has been told that, hours after the attack began, an unmanned Predator drone was sent over the U.S. mission in Benghazi, and that the drone and other reconnaissance aircraft apparently observed the final hours of the protracted battle.

The State Department, White House and Pentagon declined to say what military options were available. A White House official told CBS News that, at the start of the attack, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta “looked at available options, and the ones we exercised had our military forces arrive in less than 24 hours, well ahead of timelines laid out in established policies.”

But it was too late to help the Americans in Benghazi. The ambassador and three others were dead.

The chickens are coming home to roost!! Those career intel officials and those career diplomats who were thrown under the bus within the last 4 weeks do indeed have “long memories”. Over the next two weeks more “chicken feed” with be cast about with a big bag of feed dumped within a week or so and the feeding frenzy will truly begin. Mr. Prez, what goes around, comes around. And you have the gall to stand before the American people during the second Presidential debate and, in your righteously indignant voice, claim that you are insulted that your opponent would suggest that anyone within your administration would intentionally cover-up what really happened.   Reuters obtained these through sources in the State Dept – Hillary Clinton already took responsibility a week ago and nothing has changed. This did not even come up during Monday night’s debate. I think I am just desensitized to this whole Benghazi scandal. Every other day or so I am reading about how the Obama Administration did this, did that, didn’t do this, didn’t do that, etc and still nothing has changed in Washington. Even the media can’t stop fighting with each other about “terror attacks” vs “acts of terror.” I’m about maxed out on this Beghazi bs

  So, according to the 2nd email presented here,
  about 50 minutes after the 1st email went out, all of the above “national security platforms”
  were informed that the attack was over and there was a response team on site.
  This email does not incriminate, it absolves.
  
  So where is the email that says “Oops sorry, the attack is ongoing, and we were mistaken about the response team?”

  Right, but the third one does, because it proves that Hussein and Hillary knew early on that this was an al-Qaeda attack on the anniversary of 9/11.
  
  H&H will insist they had conflicting info. No matter. Enough with the “either it’s a cover up or they are incompetent” line. Hussein had the consulate security cameras, which showed there were no riots. He had emails, Facebook and Twitter evidence. He got live streaming video from the drone (which he refuses to hand over). It’s a cover up, period.

  HKS, I am inclined to think that Beck is correct on his assertions. Ambassador Stevens was there earlier with that forty tons of “aid” with a good portion of that being weapons. Stevens was essentially gun running. Apparently he did or said something that made him expendable and well in advance of the 9-11 anniversary security for his area of operation was reduced. When the attack did come, he and his staff were simply hung out to dry.

Romney had his ass handed to him on a platter in Mondays debate.   Instead, they ALL came out with the “It was the video” excuse. The FBI grabbed up the director of a POS youtube video on parole violation charges at 1 in the morning. Who does this?
  
  There were people taking to twitter (many celebs included) that called for punishment of this guy for expressing his right to free speech. The sheeple were ready to walk all over the 1st amendment because the anointed one pegged a youtube video as the culprit.
  
  AND it validated the video & argument that some of the radicals in the middle east were trying to push….causing riots & protests in 20 something countries…including AUSTRALIA & ENGLAND

  I believe this is the final thrust we needed to tear down the walls of lies Barack Hussein Obama and his gang have been building in America.
  Those who vote for Obama know nothing about the current events.
  But the “undecided” and the independents usually keep an eye on things. And for them as well as for those who have been criticizing Romney for not being a stronger contender in the last debate, this new course of events is what they needed to decided their vote.
  This is a treacherous administration that need to go. In a past edition The Blaze asked how history would show Obama as president. I think he himself is writing his obituary as politician, and engraving in stone his true self: the worst American president in modern history.

  If it walks like a duck, it’s a duck. Would you have doubted 2001 was a terrorist attack after another plane hit the second tower? Mind you, that was a first for us.
  
  You forget we do have live footage from the Consulate security cameras. The manner the attack was carried out proves it was a preplanned terrorist attack. It was the anniversary of 9/11. This was not the first attack by the Libyan al-Qaeda affiliates in Benghazi, and certainly not the first one against our consulate, although previous ones had not left any casualties. Libyan intel had forewarned of an attack on 9/11. Israel knew; we knew. As per usual when a jihadist group succeeds, they immediately claimed responsibility on the Internet. This attack had the al-Qaeda signature written all over it, and the emails corroborate that.

  I agree with your sentiments RWLG, in fact, today I phoned my elected reps’ offices to URGE they bring -Obama and his regime to trial for their criminal acts over the past four years. I explained to those with whom I spoke that I did NOT mean impeachment but treason and other felonies that would put them in jail. I’m not holding my breath for this to happen because there will never be enough people who urge the same from their elected reps, but I have made my feelings known.
  As for -Obama being defeated on 6 November, I’m not holding my breath on that, either; I figure it’s even money that his thugs will manage to steal the election–Ohio is where they’re putting their money, they will get NY and CA by a landslide, PA, MD, and IL by a big majority, and squeak out a win in VA and FL. I pray that I’m wrong but fear that I’m right.

This needs to be on the front page of every paper in America. It also needs extensive media coverage. If there is a smoking gun as to a coverup, it does’nt get any clearer than this. How much you want to bet the bulk of the MSM trivialize this or don’t report on it at all? I swear, the actions of the MSM over the last 4 years are criminal. They can’t even be refered to as news agencies anymore because they are so blatantly partisan that they would willingly cover up the most dispicable acts commited be “The One” Nothing but Barrys personal propaganda machine. Michelle Bachmann clearly outlined in correspondence, released the day of the Colorado theater shooting, stating that the Muslim Brotherhood had made serious inroads in the Pentagon, the FBI, Congress and various school districts and police departments, especially in places like Dearborn, Michigan. When universities accept that teaching students how to defeat the Constitution, and live to rule others was better than a real education, you get leadership that lies looking us right in the eyes (Clinton, Obama, Biden, Reid, Pelosi, etc), steals (entitlements, green jobs, illegals, environmentalists, etc) and will say and do anything to stay in power, and align themselves with terrorists, crook, immorality and ignorance.
After all that we know, only one representative was willing to put herself out there, calling the evil out. Michelle Bachmann, who deserves apologies from the media, Democrats and Republicans that tried to throw her under the bus, including the Speaker of the House.

I think Romney knew this and he would be better off just letting this news come to light than to try to turn off undecided voters by attacking the President on Benghazi.

  During the debate I watched Romney closely and he seemed to know that something was going to hit the fan so he did not have to go there. And Obama gave it away by trying to pull Romney into a discussion on Libya and Romney was NOT going there! Smart Romney – but NOW Obama has Gloria Allred – the ambulance chaser – coming out saying she has some dirt on Romney – well nothing could be bigger than Obama’s Libya-gate!!

I’ve been waiting for this story to show up on The Blaze. – So what happens now? Now that we know this was a terrorist attack with Ansar al-Sharia taking the credit 2 hours after the attack and the White House knowing about it… Is it considered a cover-up?

I am really upset by this. Obama should have kept his mouth shut and said nothing instead of blaming a video. Do you realize how hurt the parents, wives, sons and daughters of the fallen are going to be? I feel sick. Our president is an embarrassment more now than ever!

  It does appear confirmed as a coverup. The only out I can see is if Biden was right that he and Obama personally did not see it, if the top staff felt they “wouldn’t understand” or the like, which of course only leaves us questioning their competence. There’s no good answer here for that ticket.
  
  What would really be interesting to learn is if this was definitely included in the security report that Obama claims he reads instead of going to the meetings half the time. It may be impossible to know that except years down the road for security concerns, but it’s very hard to imagine his staff would leave this out of that report.

  This should be a testament to how cold hearted and careless this President is. We have a base in Sigonella, Sicily, Italy, 460-80 miles away. They could have been there in less than 4 hours after the attack was started. But instead, the powers that be sat there with their thumbs up their butts and watched our countrymen die, probably afraid of hurting the feelings of the Libyan government.
  
  Instead of buzzing the compound with a couple of f-16′s to scatter the attackers, perhaps buying some more time for our people who were cornered, again, they did NOTHING.
  
  Our President does not care about the people serving their country overseas. He does not care for our troops. He does not care about our Country and he does not care about us. The only thing he cares about is his ideology. His heart is made of stone.
