Kansas Students Stage School Lunch Boycott to Protest Federal Lunchroom Nutrition Law

Abilene High School Students Protest Calorie Restrictions on School Lunches By Refusing to Buy

Students protesting the calorie limitations and nutrition requirements were not purchasing lunches from the school this week. (Image: Shutterstock.com)

After students have been saying “we are hungry” due to new nutrition guidelines for school lunches that limit calories and increase fruits and vegetables, a group in Abilene, Kan. participated in a three-day protest against it.

The Salina Journal reports students at Abilene Senior High School against the calorie limitations in the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, which was signed into law by the president, refused to buy school lunches, thinking it would have financial impacts that would speak louder than words.

“The biggest way to get into someone’s head is to mess with their pockets,” freshman Gehrig Geissinger said, according to the Journal.

Here’s more from the Journal on student’s thoughts regarding the lunch program protest:

Participating in the protest was no big deal for senior Kae Brown, 17. Kae, who sat in the hallway nursing a soft drink during lunch period, said she usually doesn’t buy cafeteria meals but understands the motivation behind the protest.

“People complained there wasn’t enough food before, so I can see why they throw a fit now,” she said.

[World History teacher Wendy] Sherbert said she’s proud of her students for peacefully protesting something they strongly disagree with.

“They’ve been very respectful and quiet,” she said. “This is not about food, but about control, and what role the government plays — if the government should be a substitute for parents teaching their own children.”

“Most people have been supportive of what we’re doing,” Sherbert said.

It was a recent lesson taught by Sherbert on peaceful protests that inspired the students to take action with this cause.

Even workers in the lunch room aren’t necessarily in agreement with the new regulations. The Journal reported food server Kari Beetch saying that although they’re doing what they’re told, she believes “the amount of food served should be based on the individual. Every kid needs different calories.”

Although nutrition requirements and calorie limitations have been in the spotlight from the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act lately, the act also has provisions that provide breakfasts for students who need it and also dinners and meals over summer vacation. The dinners earlier this month were featured by NBC’s Nightly News. Watch the clip:

It may seem ironic given the complaints surrounding the lunch program’s calorie limitations supposedly leaving students hungry, NBC reported in its clip that studies show students perform better when they’re well fed as reason for supporting the federally subsidized dinners.

I’m a teacher, and the things I see with the food programs drives me crazy. The latest thing is that everyone gets free lunch for 8 years if and only if 90% of the entire student body turns in the application. They do not have to qualify, their parents can be millionaires for all they care, all they want is the piece of paper with the info filled out. So, you and I are paying for free lunch to kids carrying iPhones, wearing the latest and trendiest clothes, and driving “cool” cars. All the while we are working our butts off to put food on the table that costs us more and more each day. Oh, if I want to buy the same food the kids are eating, I have to pay $5. Not to mention the fact that I have to drive 35 miles to work every day, because teachers are not being hired in my city.

The commies have really gotten sly. They lost the arms race so now they ooze into our lives like the slime they are. A little bit here a little bit there and the stupid dullards will eventually get used to having all aspects of their lives invaded and slowly controlled. This is why I call it the “Government Zoo”. They’ve already gotten nearly half the country to sit up and beg on command. I really wonder how many would commit suicide if O told them to.

I used to put away TEN hotdogs with buns and “the works” during a 30-minute school lunch – and was still skinny because I was so active outside of the classroom with sports, farm chores, etc.

I absolutely do not understand this regulation of calories at school – and then the kids go home and eat all kinds of junk food purchased with mama’s food stamps.

But the Democrat way is treat everyone as equals, except that some are more equal than others.

I wonder how many congressmen, senators, government officials, and the POTUS and VPOTUS are willing to eat as few calories at lunch/

Maybe they already do. That could be one of the reasons for the severe lack of quality work we’re seeing from our elected officals. Sadly, I feel there may be deeper, more serious issues at work here, though.

It is absolutely ridiculous the amount of food that my grandson gets for $2.50. One day he got a hot dog, piece of fruit, & a 1/2 pint of milk. WHAT!!!! $2.50. If he doesn’t eat part of his fruit he is not allowed to go outside for recess.
When I heard this I was furious!!! No more school lunches for him. If you have children, ask them what they are having for lunch.
    Good for these students!!!!

Let’s quit referring to them as public schools and call them what they really are…compulsory GOVERNMENT schools. Not quite as cheery to send your kids off to but more accurate.
In England they have cameras in their garbage cans monitoring correct ‘recycle-bin’ useage (complete with fines and jail time) and the sheep there are not upset.

Michigan voters have a proposal to mandate that 25% of all our energy comes from “Green” energy.

Yeah baby – looks like were not going to need your dirty coal. We’re going to keep warm all winter long with wind turbines.

Hey Johnny, but if you can afford the electric bill what sense would it make to use wind? If it costs me 1000 dollars a year more in cost then why would I want to use it? I would go with the cheapest. Coal is that cheap. But if you want to pay me electric bill then go right ahead and I will use wind power. I watched my bills go from average 90 dollars a month to 145 a month under oblowme. A vote for him is like a vote for Stalin

Johnny, the other point to that is that they go in and play the fact that your town or whatever will be given 100% of your power from green sources. Fact is that once it hits the grid there is no telling where it is from coal, wind, natural gas, so while sounds good far from the real facts that while wind can help add to energy supply in limited areas and a very limited capacity they are relying on coal to sell this stupid green energy crap !!

You troll. you don’t have any brains if you think that the “unlimited fruits and veggies” served in the public schools are going to give kids the amount of calories they need. I know from experience, I am in a public high scool every day and all I see is kids with empty trays by the time they get to the cash register, because they ate all their food already. The school breakfast isn’t sufficient either, which adds to the anger buliding up in kids everywhere. I hear talk of scheduling a bake sale to compete with all of the non-calories in the “unlimited fruits and veggies” so kids aren’t going home hungry. Heck, they aren’t even allowed to buy non-diet sodas! This kind of government regulation cannot and will not be tolerated for much longer. You are an idiot if you think otherwise.

You seriously don’t have a problem with the government telling you how many calories you must eat and rationing your food accordingly? It’s wrong and overstepping the government’s role in our lives. I can only imagine your outrage if a Republican government tried to tell you how much to eat of one thing or another. Childhood obesity is a problem yes, but it’s not the government’s place to try and fix it by dictating how many calories they can eat and whether or not they can have soft drinks at school. The responsibility lies on the parents, end of story.

Your right unlimited fruits and veggies. My wife works part time in the cafeteria and every kid has to take a cup of each. The majority of those fruits and veggies go right in the trash.
Also what do you think happens when the gov is buying mass amouts of fruits and veggies?
It creates a fake market and prices go up for you and me.
So we pay twice for fruit and veggies.

I work at a small elementary school where the new “healthier” lunches are being served. You wouldn’t believe how much goes into the trash. The food is not appetizing. Even the pizza is being thrown out. Kids are being required to take a fruit and a veggie, good intentions but huge waste. The principal comes in every day and tries to tell the kids to eat- she seems to think it’s too much talking preventing the kids from eating what’s on their trays, but I’ll tell you- the kids who have brought their lunches from home have no problems eating their lunches.
