Obama Told CBS Hours After Benghazi Attack That He Had ‘Suspicion’ That Event Was Pre-Planned (So Why Did the Story Change?)
Editor’s note: We discussed this story during our live BlazeCast today:
With the presidential election just 12 days away, the furor over the Obama administration’s handling of the September 11 attacks that left four Americans dead in Benghazi, Libya, rages on. At the center of the controversy is whether President Barack Obama and other officials purposefully misled the American public regarding what spawned the act of terror. A re-examination of some of the comments made by the president in the wake of the attack further adds to the confusion and skepticism.
Let’s start with the latest information to emerge in what critics are dubbing “Benghazi-gate.” On Wednesday, TheBlaze reported that newly-released emails corroborate the notion that the White House, among other government institutions, was alerted on September 11 — the day of the attack — that the Libyan militant group Ansar al-Sharia had taken almost-immediate credit for the deadly violence. Yet, for days, Obama administration officials continued to blame “Innocence of Muslims,” a 13-minute anti-Islam YouTube clip, for a supposedly-spontaneous and deadly reaction.
Now, here’s where the situation becomes a bit curious. Obama gave an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” just 14 hours after the attack took place. During the interview, which was scheduled before the assault unfolded, the president said that he did not believe that the Benghazi violence was due solely to random mob action.
“You’re right that this is not a situation that was — exactly the same as what happened in Egypt and my suspicion is that there are folks involved in this who were looking to target Americans from the start,” Obama told journalist Steve Kroft.
This portion of the interview, in which the president seems to be admitting his belief that Benghazi was a planned attack, apparently wasn’t aired on “60 Minutes” back in September. While some outlets have accused CBS News of bias for not sharing Obama’s statements during a time when questions surrounding the administration have raged, the clip has been available online since September 12.
According to FOX News, this portion of the interview was shown on television for the first time on October 19. Here’s how Breitbart.com frames CBS’s decision not to show the clip:
CBS chose not to air that portion of the interview with President Obama–not even in the days and weeks that followed, when it was highly relevant–first to the question of the nature of the Benghazi attack, then to the question of whether the president had in fact called it an act of terror from the start. [...]
What CBS chose to air, instead, was President Obama’s attack on his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, who had criticized the administration’s apologetic response to the Cairo demonstration.
Watch the president’s comments, below:
Considering this comment, which was uttered just hours after the attack, one cannot help but wonder why the president and other officials continued in subsequent days to claim that the video was the prime cause of the violence. The State Department’s e-mail alerts, which TheBlaze previously shared, add to the intrigue. CBS News recaps the e-mail timeline:
At 4:05 p.m. Eastern time, on September 11, an alert from the State Department Operations Center was issued to a number government and intelligence agencies. Included were the White House Situation Room, the office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the FBI.
“US Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack” — “approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well. Ambassador Stevens, who is currently in Benghazi, and four COM (Chief of Mission/embassy) personnel are in the compound safe haven.”
At 4:54 p.m., less than an hour later, another alert: “the firing… in Benghazi…has stopped…A response team is on site attempting to locate COM (embassy) personnel.”
Then, at 6:07 p.m., State sent out another alert saying the embassy in Tripoli reported the Islamic military group “Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibilty for Benghazi Attack”… “on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli.”

Yet, while the president initially said that he believed the attack was something more calculated than simple mob rule, the administration quickly became scattered in its assessment. In fact, days after Obama’s CBS appearance, the explanation transitioned from a calculated attack to a spontaneous response to “Innocence of Muslims.”
On September 16, five days after the murder of four Americans, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice appeared on Sunday talk shows, where she doubled-down on the notion that the film was to blame. In a letter to Republican senators she explained why she went with the narrative — even after Obama shared his hunch that mob rule wasn’t to blame — that “Innocence of Muslims” was the catalyst for violence. Rice wrote:
“In my Sept. 16 Sunday show appearances, I was asked to provide the administration’s latest understanding of what happened in Benghazi. In answering, I relied solely and squarely on the information the intelligence community provided to me and other senior U.S. officials, including through the daily intelligence briefings that present the latest reporting and analysis to policy makers. This information represented the intelligence community’s best, current assessment as of the date of my television appearances, and I went out of my way to ensure it was consistent with the information that was being given to Congress.”
And it didn’t end there. On September 17, during a briefing, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland refused to call the attack an act of terror — a curious statement considering what had unfolded.
“I don’t think we know enough. I don’t think we know enough. And we’re going to continue to assess,” she answered when pressed about whether “terror” was an adequate descriptor. “We’re going to have a full investigation now, and then we’ll be in a better position to put labels on things, okay?”
Perhaps The Kansas City Star best summarizes the odd messaging dynamic coming from Washington in the wake of the tragedy:
What prompted that pivot remains a mystery amid a closely contested presidential election and Republican allegations that President Barack Obama intentionally used outrage over the video to mask administration policy missteps that led to the deaths of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens…
Paul Pillar, a former top U.S. intelligence analyst on the Middle East, said that it’s natural with such incidents for accounts to change as new information is gathered. “You have not only a fog of war situation, but fragmentary, incomplete information, and as the responsible agencies develop and acquire better information, the explanations are naturally going to evolve,” he said.
But the administration’s statements offer an ironic twist on the “fog-of-war” phenomenon: They apparently were more accurate on the day after the attacks than they were when Rice made her TV appearances four days later. Administration officials so far have provided no detailed explanation for the change.
Obama’s own address to the United Nations on September 25 overwhelmingly focused upon Middle Eastern democracy, free speech and the anti-Islam film. The president used the word “killers” to describe those responsible for the Benghazi attacks, clearly crafting his comments carefully (also worth noting: he avoided the word “terror”).
On Wednesday, the aforementioned information — including the video — was discussed by Bret Baier and his FOX News panel on “Special Report” (see a video montage around 2:30 that shows Obama seemingly backtracking on his initial comments the day after the attack):
It’s a complex situation, but considering Obama’s own initial hunch, it’s odd that the administration would flip-flop so fervently on messaging. While it’s understandable that the “fog of war” would create uncertainty, sending Rice out to vehemently claim that a video caused the violence before all of the information was in seems problematic.

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 11:00amPlease step back and look at this whole situation with open ears and wide eyes.
On the day of and before the attack in Benghazi, protester were protesting the video at the Embassy in Eygpt. The Embassy put out a statement about the video.
Then, the attack happened in Benghazi. What the Blaze article omits is that in the 1st email, it stated that there was security at the compound. Then, less than an hour later the fighting had stopped.
Then, throughout the night and in the days after, protests broke out all over the Middle East regarding the video.
Also, at 6:00 on the night of the attack, an email is sent stating that a terrorist org. admitted to the attack, but then, several days later, they retracted their role in it.
It does not seem unreasonable that the Administration was confused with what role a terrorist org. played and/or the video played in the attack since there had been protests about it in the Middle East that day and throughout the night and subsequent days after. Also, this article even says “the president said that he did not believe that the Benghazi violence was due solely to random mob action.”
Also, have any of you ever considered that by downplaying the terrorist’s role in this was a strategy by the Administration to help keep other American’s in the region safe? It’s a possibility that should be considered before jumping to accusations and conspiracy theories.

When Obama and Democrats lose in November, their end-of-game worries will just begin. In January, the preparation for the Treason Trials will begin There are over 1000 suspects of High Treason starting with Obama, his wife, members of Congress and people outside of the Government. These trials will over shadow the historic trials of the Lincoln assassins, Billy Mitchell Court Marshall, Rosenbergs atomic spy trials, and Nixon’s impeachment. This will be the biggest series of trials since the Nuremberg and Japanese War Crime Trials after WWII. This must be done to deter people like Obama from every attempting to destroy our nation. The US Constitution is clear on High Treason and its penalty.

The ‘security’ at the compound was a Libyan militia. Why do we have Libyan militia protecting a CIA safe house? Why were they taking pictures? It seems like you only have open ears for what make Barack Hussein Obama hands look clean in all this.

Also, the so called video that caused the world to light on fire only really started getting views when the regime fanned the flames about it. It went from tens of thousands of views to millions of views in a few days. Talk about shooting first and aiming after, How did blaming this video keep any americans safe after the regime went on tour promoting the video?

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 1:30pmTo Sosorryforyou….really??? This is a complete cover-up and you try as you might to explain it away, this President and his Administration is responsible for the deaths of 4 Americans. There are 3 scandals here, the first is the fact that despite repeated requests for additional security from the head of security at Benghazi, the State Dept. denied every request, in fact, actually reduced what they had! This after the British Embassy and the Red Cross left Benghazi because of the increased violence. The second scandal is that this Administration did absolutely nothing to try and save the Ambassador and others during the 7 hour attack (you are incorrect, the first attack ended and then once they moved they attacked our people again. The 2 Seals died 6 and a half hours later defending their position). And the third scandal is the fact that Obama and his Adminstration has LIED to the American people telling us that this was because of a video when he knew it was not. He figured the mainstream media would cover for him again as they had throughout his entire term! And, in fact, NBC, ABC, CNN, CBS and numerous print outlets are either not reporting on this at all or spinning it that it is no big deal. This is worse that Watergate…no one died in Watergate. Our President in lying to us, repeatedly. You and the rest of America, Democrat or Republican, should have a major problem with this. Obama deserves to be impeached, not re-elected!

Have you considered the fact that normal security protocols and procedures were missing / lacking in this situation? There was no quick response force, no marines, none of the normal protections. Why? Because its harder to assassinate the possible leak when hes got 50 marines guarding him.
Please, if you are so sure of the current government stance, can you confirm why, when Hilary Clinton requested more security for the diplomat, some 6 days before the incident, it was not provided. Usually when the secretary of state says “hey, Barack, this guy is in real trouble and I feel his security needs strengthening.”, the president responds “get me the Chief of staff immediately, we need to correct this issue as quickly as possible.”
Also, if you are so smart, was was the ambassador not at the embassy in Libya, but in the war zone 300 miles east, in an unprotected CIA safe house?

Except for the part about previously requested security, all you have here is speculation on your and Beck’s part. You are assuming that there was no attempt to provide more security during the attack (which has now been reported to not be true), and you are assuming that the Obama Administration was trying to cover up what really happened during the attack although the Administration says differently. I will always give ANY Administration the benefit of doubt while you have decided to jump to the conclusion that the President is lying although you have no concrete facts. I am not saying that you are not right. All I’m saying is that, after following this story since it first came out and now seeing the emails, I can definately see how the “fog of war” has lead to a lot of confusion, and I will not condemn an Administration based on assumptions. I never did that during Bush’s whole “weapons of mass destruction” debacle, and I won’t do it here until I know ALL of the information. That’s the real problem isn’t it? There are too many people these days who have hated Pres. Obama since the beginning and will strike at him immediately without all of the info. That’s what’s called conspiracy theory – coming to a conclusion about something without all the information. This very well could turn out to be some sort of cover up, but I don’t see it yet. There are too many holes in Beck’s theory and investigation.

I think I can shed some light on the thought process at this website:
Step 1: Assume the president is actively trying to bring about the destruction of America and that everything he says is a lie.
Step 2: Look for evidence that supports your claim while disregarding any piece of evidence that does not support your claim.
Step 3: Use the biased evidence you’ve collected to prove your premise, that Obama is a lying muslim who is actively trying to destroy America. Also he is in fact a marxist, and may or may not be the reincarnation of adolph hitler or perhaps the antichrist himself.

Would you hold Bush to the same standard as Obama in this situation? Under Bush, an attack was committed on our own soil, and killed 3,000 people instead of 4. In response, we went to war with a country that had nothing to do with it (Iraq). The war in Iraq itself caused the death of 4,486 American citizens and at least 100,000 Iraqi deaths (66,000 of the dead Iraqis were civilians).

Why continue to hope in, and support the corruption, and the inability of politicians who promise the unattainable? For some 6,000 years of recorded experience, mankind has struggled with their various brands of government, stumbling through their lives, hoping in men to provide peace and security. Their hoped for peace and security never comes!

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 9:14amThis President doesn’t seem to have it in his character to be able to admit his own faults and mistakes, maybe he thinks that is not needed in a President, but a human side is, and he just doesn’t seem to know how to be honest with the people of this nation, only dictators and despots try to portray themselves are perfect, they can do no wrong and our President seems to follow that path and it is just wrong on so many levels.

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 11:25amYou are possibly mistaken. Who exactly says these are “faults and mistakes”?
Is it not possible this is part of a larger progressive plan? May be a conspiracy theory, but it is the only theory that explains everything well.

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 9:13amThe attack went on for 7 hours. They had forces an hour away. Barry huddled with Valerie Jarret etc. and it was decided that another “Black Hawk Down” could sink his reelection. They decided to let those four men die to protect his chances for a second term. They thought spinning the yarn about the video and jailing the producer of the video would be enough to keep the press happy. Considering the press was more interested in Romney’s statement than a dead ambassador, It might have worked. If it wasn’t for FNC and talk radio, it would have. Still might.

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 9:19amI don’t think it will Gonzo, people are finally waking up to the fact that all the lies told, just don’t add up. Even if they did tell the truth at this point, they’ve lost all credibility.

Posted on October 25, 2012 at 9:58amCBS has not had the ability to tell the truth during most of my lifetime and I am 55. My fathers old saying was “they wouldn’t know the truth if it bit them in the butt!” Change that to they wouldn’t report the truth and you describe them perfectly.

Two weeks in the media and at the UN. Amazing. And then…when it was no longer beneficial..they started their spin…Ah, the Lies ..the lies…the lies..Joe Wilson had their number years ago….remember that shocked look on Nancy’s face ?? Classic…
