Veteran William Overbays Romney Signs, Flags Torches by Vandals

A Vietnam-era veteran’s Mitt Romney campaign signs were seemingly torched by vandals right in his front yard in Howley-in-the-Hills, Fla., WKMG reports.

William Overbay claims someone lit the flags and signs in his yard on fire. The items were all supportive of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The vandals reportedly painted a message on his driveway and grass that read “Obama 4 life.”

“This is the first thing I saw was this sign painted on my driveway,” Overbay told WKMG in Orlando.

Police say no clues were immediately found that could identify the offenders.

But Overbay took the politically motivated attack personally because he fought for the country and all Americans’ right to free speech.

“To give that many years for my country and to see it desecrated in such a despicable way angers me…We have freedom of speech and to desecrate any kind of signs is absolutely despicable and a violation of the constitution of the United States,” he said.

The veteran says he plans to replace the torched signs and flags before the upcoming election.

  He fought because he had to. There was a draft then which means if you went into the military if you wanted to or not, unless you were deferred or had some medical problem. Even if he volunteered, they (government/military) sends you where they want. He did what he was told and if for no other reason deserves respect from this country. In any event, the guy doesn’t deserve to have his property distroyed by others. Apparently the war has finally come to America’s shores. If he wants his free speech apparently he’s going to have to fight for it here now and without the help of the military. There are those on the left who think it’s ok to deny unborn and those on the right their life, liberty and freedom of speech. I’m to understand that a lot of Barry supporters plan on rioting if Barry looses. If they do, they will have declared open season on themselves. That’ll be the time to clean house.   @Chet: Your history is fogged, or you’ve been misinformed. The biggest threat to the world at that time in history was communism. Communism was taking a big stronghold in that part of the country and the Vietnam War was fought to prevent the spread into South Vietnam. Sure, because our government would not let us fight using both hands we didn’t do so well, and eventually communism took over anyway, but that’s also history.
  
  Communism, in case you’re not aware, does not allow the freedom of speech. If we hadn’t fought in Vietnam and, at the same time been fighting the Cold War, we might very well have communism in this country today.
  
  So, like the Vet in this article, myself and many others who fought we DID fight to preserve our freedoms – as all previous and current military are doing. It may not seem like that’s what it is on the surface, but the underlying consequences could very well be the end of the freedoms we enjoy.
  
  How about rather than denigrate someone for their service you try thanking them for preserving your freedoms and then head down to the local recruiter and do YOUR part.

That’s why I pointed out that the authors of both the article and the comments on it were full of crap when they said that he was fighting for “freedom of speech.” I’m not sure that doing what you’re told entitles you to respect. Because of the danger involved, fighting in a pointless war may be less contemptible than getting paid for doing any other useless government job, but it is certainly less admirable than not getting paid to do a useless government job at all. Still, if he believed that he was in some way serving his country, I do admire his intent to be of service.
  
  I agree that he doesn’t deserve to have his property destroyed by others, just like everybody else doesn’t. I just think claiming that kids committing an act of petty vandalism is news just because he “fought for the country and all Americans’ right to free speech” is as big a load of horse manure as writing an article about kids throwing cherry bombs in his mailbox and claiming that it’s news because he fought for our postal service.

  I followed a young college age kid today in a Toyota with a flat rear tire at 25 MPH with smoke coming off it. He had Obama /Biden stickers all over the back including the bumper. He pulled into Wal-Mart and parked and I pulled up to tell him he had a flat. I first told him with his cute goatee and all that he was what I expected to have those stickers all over his car. He gave me the finger and called me a few choice names. I just rolled up my window and drove off not telling him about the flat. He wouldn’t have believed me anyway. If you see him driving on a rim don’t even bother to waste yout time.

  My history is not fogged, and I have not been misinformed. As you note, the Communists did take over South Vietnam. It happened forty years ago, and it had no adverse effects on our country or our individual liberties. If there is any less free speech today than there was forty years ago it has nothing to do with losing that war. Communism did not spread from Vietnam to any more important countries, let alone to the U.S., because Vietnam is not even close to any important countries. You and many others who fought we did NOT fight to preserve our freedoms, as some previous and current military have done.
  
  If you truly believe that you were fighting to preserve our freedoms, I thank you for your intention to be of service. I’m too old to head down to the local recruiter and sign up. If I had enlisted when I still could, I would have served in a standing army during peace time, so I would have been just as much a parasite sucking at the government teat as the laziest welfare cheat or the most deluded warrior in a useless war.
