‘You Slit Her Throat!’: Nanny Arrested in Fatal Stabbings of Two Children

NEW YORK (AP) — A mother returned home to her luxury apartment building near Central Park on Thursday to find two of her small children stabbed to death in a bathtub and their nanny, with self-inflicted stab wounds, lying near them, police said.

The nanny, who was found near a knife, was hospitalized in critical condition and was in police custody, and authorities said she is suspected of killing the children, who were pronounced dead at a hospital.

The children’s mother entered the dark apartment with her 3-year-old and thought her other two children were out with the 50-year-old nanny, police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. She went downstairs and asked the doorman at her building, La Rochelle, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, whether he’d seen them leave. When he said no, she went back upstairs and discovered her 2-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter in the bathroom, Kelly said. It’s unclear how many times the children were stabbed.

The nanny was found on the bathroom floor with stab wounds to her neck, and a kitchen knife was close by, police said. There was no water in the bathtub, they said.

Kelly said it’s unclear how long the nanny had worked for the family and the police investigation was ongoing.

The apartment building sits in one of the city’s most idyllic neighborhoods, a block from Central Park, near the Museum of Natural History and blocks from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The neighborhood is home to many affluent families, and seeing children accompanied by nannies is an everyday part of life there, making the idea of such violence even more disturbing to residents.

Music therapist Rima Starr, who lives on the same floor as the family, said she heard screams coming from their apartment at around 5:30 p.m.

“There was some kind of screaming about, ‘You slit her throat!’” she said. “It was horrible.”

She said she believed the nanny had been hired just recently.

“I met her in the elevator, the day before yesterday, and was making small talk,” she said.

After police arrived, she said, the mother remained in the building’s lobby, screaming hysterically and clutching her surviving child.

The insane American society will eventually go bankrupt trying to track every single piece of information, every single serial number on anything that could ever be used as a weapon until the system crumbles in financial chaos.

Knife Control? I know you are mocking the absurdity of the liberal mind.

What we really need is liberal control.

Did someone say the husband worked for NBC? My thought is that these rich people were not paying all that much. In the past we say a Clinton Supreme Court Nominee not pay social security tax on a nanny.

I tell my kids that if you are going to have hired help, you have to pay them more than a living wage. A living wage just gets you to the treading water stage. I bet the nanny was getting paid less than a living wage. I also bet the Parents voted Democrat. The nanny needs to be executed. No doubt. I think torture would be in order also. But I think that the whole set up needs investigation. If you have hired help you will have to pay them somewhere between $30K & $80k.
      I sincerely doubt they did.

That’s what I do. I made the decision to put my career on hold (60 hour weeks outside the home) to be available to my children, especially with our youngest child having autism. It sure put a huge dent in our finances, but that is no sacrifice compared to the peace and mind, knowing our kids are safe and sound with me.

C’mon people. Not everyone can work from home. Life isn’t so idyllic for everyone. Not every job enables that lifestyle. How can I work from home when I work in a factory? Or in a restaurant? Get real. And not every working woman is doing so to live an extravagant lifestyle. I don’t know about this woman, but many women HAVE to work outside the home just to survive – pay rent and eat. Some of us have to send our babies off to daycare. Or would you rather we go on welfare?

I’m sure she paid this nanny well, but this nanny was a psychopath. It’s almost like it’s a horror movie, except it’s reality. Just a terrible crime. Music therapist Rima Starr…How dumbed-down must be the upper-crust, that someone can make a living good enough to afford the Upper West Side of Manhattan as a f#$%n “music therapist”?

That’s it, man. I’m trading my communication skills in and training as an animal psychotherapist, then I’m moving to Greenwich Village and working my way up to the Upper West Side to earn thousands an hour telling little greasy grannys that their dogs don’t like vegetarian meals and perfume – they want to go out, “p”, crp, and get laid…

WOODYEE, I’m quite floored that the tragic news story of a mother returning home to find her 1 and 6 year old children murdered, prompts a comment from you not about the horrific loss of life or the trauma that the parents, friends, grandparents and extended family will forver deal with. You chose, instead, to question the line of work of the neighbor, a music therapist, making uninformed comments about a profession which is very legitimate, serves individuals with severe physical and cognitive dissbilites, those at end of life, children and adults with cancer, etc. Music Therapists do not make large salaries, but rather do work that often reaches those who are not reached in other ways, because music is a whole brain responds to music, rather than only one side, as in other activities. Rima.Starr may have money to live in an affluent area yet still choose to work in a field where she is compensated minimally monetarily. Perhaps she is an author or lives with someones she also takes care of. Regardless. I suggest you visit http://www.musictherapy.org. I think you will be very surprised to find just how far off the mark you were. Music Therapy is a masters level degree at some of the finest schools in the country. Johns Hopkins, Duke and other hospitals employ music therapists to work with their patients. Perhaps one day you’ll have the benefit of seeing MT in action. Look on Youtube. You’ll find stories from NBC, CBS, ABC, etc. I really hope you will.

Look around you. The kids who are the best behaved, have the best shots at life, are the most talented and appear to be the smartest; the homes that appear to be the most well-run, the healthiest; the most successful men have women who are MOTHERS who stay home (or in some cases the HUSBAND stays home). You have kids for about 18 years; you can stay home for about 10. By then you’ll have raised amazing kids. There is not enough money to entrust your most brilliant assets, your greatest treasures with someone who is a stranger. IF anyone thinks they need the money, then move to a cheaper home, smaller town. We’re talking 10 years here. RAISE YOUR KIDS. STAY HOME. The difference between my kids and their friends was amazing. Privileged for sure but they never had drug problems, school problems and they have grown into great adults, great spouses. I stayed home for first 10 years. This garbage about having to have a career is a bunch of hooey. NOWADAYS with the computer you can have an amazing career if you have to – at home.
YOU cannot trust anyone to come in and take care of your kids. There may be one or two decent Nanny’s out there, but for the most part I say no. SORRY but this whole Women’s lib thing has wrecked our nation; our homes; everything. I have always been “Liberated” and so have my friends and I’ve worked hard at home and later, but this is a tragedy that does not need to happen.

My heart goes out to the mom who thought she was doing the good thing by raising her 3 kids alone. Where is dad? He must feel very shamed and sad as well. The worst thing to ever happen to women is to belittle motherhood and take them out of the home, replacing dad with government whether that is welfare or a “good paying job” with a babysitter or nanny. If a woman does a job the same as a man she should be paid the smae. However, if she chooses to have children please remember they are NOT pets who should be left in anyone’s care. And may the nanny burn in hell.
