Recovery? Almost All of the Jobs Added Since 2009 Have Gone to Part-Time Workers Ages 55 & Older
It’s no secret that a great deal of the jobs added in the last few years have been part-time jobs. In fact, as noted earlier on TheBlaze, part-time employment was almost entirely responsible for that miraculous dip in unemployment we saw earlier this month.
But here’s something you may not have known: Of the almost five million jobs added since late 2009, almost all of them have gone to part-time workers ages 55 and older.
“[S]tarting since the official NBER end of the recession in June 2009, the US has cumulatively added 2.9 million jobs,” Zero Hedge reports.
“However, when broken down by age cohort, 3.5 million of these jobs have gone to US workers aged between 55 and 69. Another 729K have gone to recent college grads aged 20-24,” the report adds.
This begs the obvious question: What about workers in their prime? That is, what about the 25-54 demographic? Well, that age demographic actually has lost 729,000 jobs since 2009.
You know what this means, right?
In other words, the US jobs “recovery” has been one that while “benefiting” part-time workers, and those who ordinarily would be exiting the labor force to focus on retirement (and can’t as they suddenly realize their savings under ZIRP [zero interest policy rate] are worthless while their fixed income portfolios return virtually nothing), has crushed American workers in their key work years, whose jobs instead have been taken by “veteran” workers who increasingly refuse to leave the workforce.
Behold:

Red = jobs gains for 20-24 demographic, Gray = 55-69. Below X-axis (i.e. job losses): Green = job losses for 16-19 demographic, Blue = 25-54. Courtesy ZH.
“So the next time a potential employer denies your job application because the job was just taken, speak to mom and dad: more than likely they applied for the same job, and got it,” the Hedge adds.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 8:47pmFinally, someone has reported the actual state of the economy, for those who really want (or need) to retire but can’t. Workers of this age group MUST WORK. The retirement that they worked towards, and responsibly managed disappeared in a matter of months, oh about, 3 TO 4 FLIPPIN’ YEARS AGO. And these are not the ‘dole’ recipients, which the media likes to talk about; these are people that must supplement their Social Security benefits (which they were required by law to pay into) which have shrunk, coupled with an unbalanced increase in basic necessities which are at an all-time high. These are not people that will apply for an EBT card, but will bag the groceries of young, garishly tattooed, multi-pierced, well manicure (and pedicured) grossly overweight younger crowd that have every ‘dole’ they can find…..

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 1:06pmI am one of those part-time workers, but as far as the BLS is concerned I am not on their radar why?
I took unemployment for about 7 months form Sep 2010 to April 2011, then I got a full-time temp job that lasted 3 months to July 2011. I also had that part-time adjunct that started in Jan 2011, thus only collecting partial unemployment. From April 2011 I was not collecting any unemployment and never did again. I dropped off the unemployment radar. The part-time teaching is semester by semester work, thus I am not guaranteed a next semester teaching job. This happened in the summer of 2012. I picked up classes for the Fall 2012. Thus I think I am not counted in the Labor Statistics. I am 61 in 13 days.
How many of those senior part-time jobs fall in my category or how many are not even counted?

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 11:07amFor decades now many employers hire only temporary or part time workers. Anyone that wants a full time job at these places has to take part time work and hope they will eventually work into a full time position. Business and industry has got the worker by the tail. They don’t want to have to pay anyone a full time wage and benefits. Obamacare will make the situation worse.

Posted on October 27, 2012 at 10:41amUntil and unless Obama Care is repealed or replaced with a plan that does not crush employers (and individuals), all the new businesses under construction will be staffed by part time workers who can only work 29.4999 hours per week or less. In all likelihood, the more senior people being hired have a resume and a work history more substantial, more successful, and more Open and Transparent than then Senator Obama’s resume when the majority media helped David Axelrod puff his candidate up to Super Hero status, some sort of weird life raft that the Press are floating on. Candidate Obama demonized Candidate Hillary Clinton’s Health Care Plan by saying he would not try to force anyone to have health insurance. So we have the Economic Recovery from Hell thanks to another lie from the most secretive candidate in US history. Oh Press people, you can’t puff hard enough to keep your life raft floating, I hope. Posted on October 27, 2012 at 5:30amWell this is right up my alley I’m 57 years old and yes I have a full time job I worked as a temp for them for nine months I didn’t miss one day except I left a half a day to go to the hospital to be with my family and my sister who passed away after four weeks of being on a ventlator and surgery and she never came out of it.I have been working since I was 14 all the jobs I have had I never got fired from and most I worked there from 4 to 12 years and they either went out of business or there was a layoff and that is never personal because I’ve been called back when things got better for the business and I go to work at 6 am I get up at 4am and I love it and I put most of the younger ones to shame because they whine about everything we have no A/C and believe me in Fl it gets hot and yes when I get home the first thing I do is hit the shower and yes I’m tired but not from the work the heat will drain you but I’am Blessed to be working and I get up the next morning and do it again.See the OLD FOLKS we have been raised with WORK ETHICS and to be self-reliant yes it’s hard but GOD never promised us a rose garden and HE provides my needs all of them including my job but employers know we are dependable and care about what we do and I will always give 100% to my job always have and I keep my job by DOING my job so I say GO OLD FOLKS.And I’ll add I took a $2 cut because I like what I do and money doesn’t buy happiness but it keeps me from going on the government dole.

In Obamas America the middle class will be the limit, controlled by taxation that will eventually push everyone into poverty,as the incomes decline and the rich disappear, leaving only the middle class left to tax, eventually leaving all citizens poor.

Their wealth came as a reward for hard work and back then the government didn’t try to claim their money as it’s own. They DID build it. You see, there was this thing called pioneering and homesteading as well as actual cash purchases of idle land. People were actually able to clear forest out here and then develop it and it became theirs. I’m the seventh generation on this land and WE own it. We built it, not you. When will you get it that poor people can hire nobody. Try to make a rich man poor and he will remove his wealth from your system. You end up with less jobs…get it yet? you blockhead.

Posted on October 26, 2012 at 10:25pmTo cause massive change in any social system across all aspects as fast and hard as possible:
Ensure the young adult to middle age are disconnected with the economic system (the 25-54 years of age) so as to make them as beholdened to the government as possible; via job assist, financial/utility and housing (mortgage) assist programs.
Place blame for the economic pitfalls and ongoing shock waves and turmoil (real and propagandized) on the previous adminsitrations policies. At the same time ensure your own party and those loyal to the ideology can the message – were on your side all the time.
Do the same for the 20-24 group by assisting with jobs and college debt; employ them with the government directly or indirect (FEMA corp/Americorp). Make them indebted to you for THEIR success in life.
In high/middle schools, work the education system to benefit loyalties and perceptions to your long term goals and party interests for the generation to come. Promise them anything, and show them how special they are in some manner (Hit*er youth…)
Such changes take 8-12 years to fulfill the basics of in most sytems the first four being the most critical. Look to the USSR (Russia), China, or the old Third Republic of Germany in the 1930s.
The same amoral leadership then is what we have now. Difference is we can change our destiny if we make the effort.

That’s right Oblamo, some people can actually live off the fruits of their own labor.
I went back to work last Dec.to escape winter boredom more than anything. I can work as either an engineer or master mechanic so jobs are easy to get. In the process I have taken a good job from a younger worker and I have years to go before my real retirement begins.

Anyways, I’m in my 50′s, am a woman, have a 4 yr science degree, and ran my own business for several years. I went on UE after getting laid-off last year; couldn’t get a job, so decided to take matters into my own hands and made some money designing websites. I reported this to the unemployment office and was able to stop taking unemployment for several months. However, once this business started slowing down and I reapplied for unemp, I was denied because I “was unwilling or unable to seek employment” via spending time updating/maintaining the sites I’d built and trying to get new clients – in addition to looking for “real” employment. I was told I should be “available to seek employment 24/7.” So…I was trying to do the right thing and got hammered. Also interesting to note that you can stay on welfare if you merely “journal.” Anyways, in addition to a few, sporadic design jobs, I’m now working about 10 hrs a week washing dishes at a local pizza place, living with a God-sent friend, and getting food from my local church. Apparently, I’m 1 in nearly one million women who have been reduced to poverty by the actions of this administration. And this dumbass thinks it’s cool to ask me to vote like my “lady parts” depended on it??? I just sincerely, with every fiber of my being, want 0 GONE.
